Top notch in the workout category! I am overjoyed with the easiness and the effectiveness of this plan!
Denise's Daily Dozen is not about donuts. When I opened this book the first sentence was a no holes barred approach:
Do you want to boost your metabolism, burn fat, tone up, and get into the best shape of your life?
Uhhh.... YEAH!
So what is Denise's book about?
From Denise Austin comes the perfect health book for anyone who wants to live better but just can't seem to find the time. Much more than just another exercise book, Denise's Daily Dozen covers a whole range of health and diet related concepts yet manages it all in a no-stress, time-conscious program of 12's. At it's core, this book has the minimum daily requirements to keep the reader flexible, strong and trim. Organized simply into seven chapters, which equal the seven days of the week, it covers a full week in daily allotments. Each day will have it's own focus from Monday being "fat burning day" to Sunday's "recharge and rejuvenate."
Denise has created a total body program, including a 7-day balanced meal plan that includes healthy recipes, and a workout that encompasses 12 exercises done in 12 minutes each day. Everyone can take just 12 minutes, at whatever time of the day works for them, and turn it over to these simple and fun exercises. Cardio, toning, yoga and breathing exercises...they're all here but in a way the maximizes effect while minimizing time.
Beyond a dozen exercises for each day of the week this book will include many other of Denise's dozens for each day.
I loved the layout of this book. For someone like me who tries really hard to be a whiz at time management and at the same time can be the Queen of procrastination.... this book is spot on.
What Denise is encouraging through this book is that in twelve minutes a day, you can complete her well balanced program that covers cardiovascular exercise, toning, and flexibility. And what I really like - is that each days twelve minute routine is different from the day before!
Monday: Cardio Fat Blast
Tuesday: Lower Body and Ab Workout
Wednesday: cardio kickbox workout
Thursday: Upper body and ab workout
Friday: Body Boot Camp Workout
Saturday: Athletic Kettlebell - inspired workout
Sunday: Yoga Stretch workoutDenise's book not only gives you practical tips for doing toning and working out anytime anywhere, (I love the squats while waiting for the toaster to pop up!) she also lays out many pages of nutrition facts as well as menu planning and day by day food choices to get you started.
I can't say enough positive things about this book. You don't need gym equipment or any fancy programs... you just need you and the will to get moving in a different direction. HIGHLY recommended from someone who has read many books on this topic and I have to say this is one of the best I have seen.

I've had this book for about 2-3 weeks now and I've made a handful of good smoothies from this book and the rest of the recipes sound great...but I'd need to own a smoothie shop to be able to make half of these recipes. All of the recipes use different ingredients and the ones I want to try the most include several powders so I'd have to go out and buy dozens of different powders and juices for this book to be useful to me.
I was hoping this book wouldn't have a lot of fancy ingredients.

Finally Thin: How I Lost More Than 200 Pounds and Kept Them Off--and How You Can, Too

I first heard of Kim Bensen on the Weight Watchers community message boards. She's marketed her own low calorie bagels and I was searching for her website for this information. I found much more than bagels. I've never met her in person, but I found that Kim is helpful and kind to those who email her. I found out about this book on her website and couldn't wait to read it...got it the first day it was avail and couldn't lay it down until I was finished.
Her book is brutally honest and I applaud her for speaking so frankly about her struggles with dieting and obesity. It's the kind of book that will inspire you to keeping going, or inspire you to get started on a life changing plan for eating if you're struggling or have given up.
At some points in the book I was in tears, and at others, laughing. Her story is heartbreaking but ends in a final triumph. Her favorite line seems to be "now it's your turn". She tries to inspire others to achieve the seemingly impossible. She lost 212 lbs, kept it off and is now a very successful Weight Watchers leader.
A VERY good book for anyone, but especially those of us who need to lose weight. I HIGHLY recommend it. Also, she includes recipes. A bonus to the book!

The ultimate companion to any diet—featuring ten steps that will give you the information and motivation to achieve your own success on any weight-loss plan.Kim Bensen knows about weight loss. And weight gain. For decades, she tried every diet there was, but nothing seemed to work – for long anyway – and she yo-yoed her way to 350 pounds. But she never gave up and in 2001, despite years of heartbreak and discouragement, Kim tried again. This time was different and the results were phenomenal: 212 pounds lost forever, fourteen dress sizes, four ring sizes, one and a half shoe sizes, and 200 points of cholesterol gone for good! In the end, Kim not only changed her health and size, but also her career. The clamor of "How did you do it?" by desperately struggling individuals as well as the national media motivated her to sit down and pen into words what she had put into action. In Finally Thin!, Kim Bensen recounts her own success story and then breaks down her success into a ten-step system, showing readers exactly how she accomplished her weight-loss goal. From choosing the right diet for your needs to setting realistic goals, finding support, eating out, recovering from a slipup, the keys to maintenance, and even 75 recipes, this book covers it all in an upbeat, inspirational, and approachable tone. A must-have for anyone trying to lose weight, Finally Thin! will help dieters break free of the yo-yo cycle and achieve their ultimate goal—once and for all.

Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be: A 90-Day Guide to Living the Proverbs 31 Life Review

Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be: A 90-Day Guide to Living the Proverbs 31 Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be: A 90-Day Guide to Living the Proverbs 31 Life is a mixed bag. It has definite strengths and some distinct weaknesses.

On the plus side is Becoming's originality, readability, style, tone and format. Partow's style is brisk and engaging. Her tone is warm, congenial and passionate. Becoming offers readers numerous strategies for change in different areas including physical health, daily routine, family relationships, finances and spiritual growth in a format that's clear and easy to follow.
In the Beginning...
This book begins with an introduction featuring a Program Overview and "what you can hope to accomplish on this 90-Day Jumpstart." Areas include: Faith, Family, Fitness, Personal Appearance and Fashion, Finances and Retirement Planning, Household Management, Ministry, Business, and Self-Management. Also a "What You'll Need" List.
Chapters average three to five pages in length and are easily digested. Also included is a daily Scripture to memorize, a Bible passage, and a guided prayer, followed by Personal and Practical sections. Each week wraps up with a Weekly Check-Up, a Practical Checklist, and a Weekly Reflection and Evaluation.

Sound or Silly?
There is much to commend in Week One, Faith Foundations, and Week Two, Godly Habits. Chapters include discussions on Time Alone With God, Meditate on God's Word, Focus on the Positive as well as Becoming "Consciously Selective", Stay Planted in the Word of God and Devote Yourself to Prayer. However, bits and pieces of "excuse me?" seep in occasionally. Some readers may file the recommendations on Day 11, Sleep in Peace (p. 56), and Day 12, Be Diligent (p. 59), under Micro-Managing Minutia or Just Plain Silly:
"I'm sure the snooze button was inspired by the devil. It's his secret weapon against Christians... if he can get you to snooze away the thirty minutes you would have, could have, should have spent with God, the devil has the upper hand against you for the rest of the day." (p. 61).
(Various sources attribute the invention of the modern snooze button - a concept which may have been around since ancient Greece - to Lew Wallace, the man who penned Ben Hur.)
Insufficient and Curious?
Becoming the Woman God Wants You to Be stumbles in two areas: sourcing and biblical exegesis. Support from credible sources and/or credentialed experts in areas that form the backbone for plans, strategies, guidelines or assertions within this work is insufficient or M.I.A. It also offers some curious biblical exegesis. Since it is beyond the scope of this review to undertake an intensive page-by-page analysis of this book, we'll focus primarily on these two areas.
Sources?
Alert readers may want to give some of the sources noted in Becoming a second look before buying what they're peddling.
Take a look at Week Three, for example, Healthy Eating (pp. 68 - 88). Chapters include: Purge Your Pantry of Harm, Resolve to Control Your Eating Habit, Limit Your Sugar Intake, Eat Reasonable Portions, and Plan Ahead for Healthier Eating. Some great ideas and guidelines here, but a fair amount of this material is either attributed to sources with questionable or unlikely credentials (if any), or not sourced at all. In this week the author lays out what foods to eat and avoid, urges a ten-day vegetable and water only diet, and lands at Day 17, Limit Your Sugar Intake (pp. 74 - 77).
Day 17 references data from www.drbob4health.com/FoodsToAvoid. The information on this site is credited to Dr. Robert F. DeMaria, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) of "Drugless Healthcare Solutions." The site focuses primarily on "correcting the spine and aiding the nervous system... so the body will draw upon its own ability to heal itself" - not on nutrition or healthy eating specifically. (Dr. Bob's Foods to Avoid list also includes: Chlorine, Liquid Candy, Milk, NutraSweet,(tm) Peanuts, soft drinks, synthetic vitamins, "genetically modified" food or food "containing modified organisms." The longer list includes pretty much everything on the typical grocery store shelf. "Dr. Bob" lists sugar as a "food to avoid," not "limit.")
Wouldn't a registered dietician or nutritionist make a more credible source here? Additionally, declarative statements such as the following cite dubious sources or appear to be unsourced (further information may be available in other Partow books or resources, but we're not reviewing the gamut here - just the single title noted.):
-- "The up and down motion of rebounding stimulates the lymphatic system, promoting more efficient cell-cleansing processes." (p. 101)
-- "In addition to eating right, one of the kindest things you can for yourself... is taking time to bathe. Did you know that bathing is important for your physical well-being? A shower may be convenient, but it doesn't accomplish the same degree of cleansing a bath can." (p. 104)
-- "A cleansing bath can purify your body from the toxins that have built up in your body. This is especially important when you start to exercise and eat foods that promote detoxification." (p. 104)
-- "Furthermore, if toxins are not rapidly eliminated from the body, they can become reassimilated." (p. 105)

"Points to Ponder"
Speaking of questionable sources, Week Six, Financial Planning (p.134-155) is perhaps the weakest part of this book. The author makes huge assumptions regarding income level, homeowner status, assets and liabilities, investments and the like. Partow tosses dollar amounts around like orbs in a pin ball machine. Often in the ten of thousands, these dollar figures may leave some readers shaking their heads.
Some readers may detect a sneering attitude toward "the poor and middle class" (see p. 139 for an example). The number of times the word "millionaire" appears in this segment borders on rapacious. This reviewer also questions the numerous "get rich quick" and "become a millionaire" schemes or proponents referenced. Again, sources such as Robert Allen, David Brach and Robert Kiyosaki are problematic.

In Day 51, Developing Multiple Streams of Income (pp. 189 - 192), Partow points out financial guru Robert Allen and his two books, Multiple Steams of Income and The One Minute Millionaire. A visit to Allen's web site includes the following:
"Robert G. Allen Is Working On His Latest Profit-Making Challenge And Needs YOU To Be One Of HIS Success Stories! Let me Teach YOU my Secrets to Creating Wealth The Multiple Streams of Income!"
This is followed by a "challenge application" which includes question #30: "Yes, I am willing to make a financial investment for this opportunity to work with Robert G. Allen." A quick "Google" of Robert Allen shows why he's earned the title of "con artist," "snake oil salesman," "fraud," and "scammer," among others. (Check out the Business Program Reviewer for one example. You can find more on your own.)
"Financial guru" and former Morgan Stanley Vice President, David Bach, author of The Automatic Millionaire, is noted in Days 40 and 79 and elsewhere. Click here for some feedback on Bach's figures and techniques:
http://www.thetaoofmakingmoney.com/2007/05/31/383.html.
What's Ringing?
"Scam", "fraud" and "one of the worst" are linked with Robert Kiyosaki (Days 37 and 51. Also see p. 139, etc.). Kiyosaki's 'Rich Dad' organization recently joined with the Russ Whitney Information Network, "a provider of postsecondary education focused on individual wealth creation and personal success." This organization's marketing activities came under grand jury investigation by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2006. (http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/226/RipOff0226341.htm. Information also available from: 2006 Business Wire, and the Gale Group.)
Does this ring any warning bells? If some of the sources for this portion of Becoming are dubious, marginally ethical/credible and possibly illegal, how sound are the principles and practices they promote?
Direct What?
In Day 52, Try Direct Marketing, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Pampered Chef and Creative Memories are mentioned (p. 193). Not mentioned is that each company requires a start-up fee or a similar capital investment, some of them hefty. Consultants for these companies typically offer credit and payment plan options to potential clients unable to pay cash for their purchases, contradicting Partow's advice in Days 38 and 39, Reduce Your Debt (pp. 141 - 144) and Pay Cash (pp. 144 - 147).
Look Before You Leap
The section on "Home Enterprises" (pp. 184-201) may be risky. Legitimate "work from home" businesses can be hard to find. These "opportunities" are rife with scams, cons, and rip-offs, so much so that they've spawned a secondary industry "exposing" the cons and come-ons. Look before you leap - or invest. (As noted above, Robert Allen and Robert Kiyosaki-isms referenced here may give cause for pause.)
Don't Forget
Also keep in mind that If you choose to participate in and practice all the routines and advice within this book, you'll need to buy:
- A personal notebook, daily planner, filelr paper, calendar, diverder, pocket pages, etc.
- Good quality walking shoes (p. 93)
- Nalgene bottles (p. 96)
- A rebounder (p. 102)
- "Cleansing bath" ingredients - p. 105
- A new mattress (if yours is 10 y.o. or more) - p. 58
- Lemons, cranberries, protein powder, ground flaxseed, etc. - see p. 104
- Ten plastic...Read more›

This is a great book that covers everything from exercises, health tips, recipes and inspiration. The book is broken down by trimester, postpartum and post baby phase 1 and phase 2 and includes concerns, exercises and helpful hints for each. I love that she included exercises for common pregnancy problems like round ligament pain, leg cramps and carpal tunnel. There is a stroller workout and a diaper bag workout including some great exercises to do with the baby. Personally, I loved the chapters on healthy eating/nutrition during pregnancy and after pregnancy which includes a great meal plan that doesn't require calorie counting. The recipes are quick & delicious including items such as an apple & date breakfast bread pudding, a very tasty and quick pesto pizza and a great black bean, sweet potato and turkey chili.
The book includes stories of real women who have completed Tracey's plan. I am one of her success stories. I started her plan when my son was 9 months old so I lost the pregnancy weight prior to starting her plan but my body shape was different and it was tough fitting into my pre-pregnancy clothes. I was so out of shape and have never enjoyed exercise but her plan was very easy to follow. I quickly lost 12 pounds and toned up and all of my friends and family were so impressed! I was at the weight I was more than 10 years ago!! I am now pregnant with our second baby so I bought this book along with Tracey's Pregnancy System workout DVD (which I am really enjoying!!). It was so nice to start my pregnancy 12 pounds lighter than my previous pregnancy and I know I'll lose it all again. Thanks Tracey!!

Death to Diabetes: The Six Stages of Type 2 Diabetes Control & Reversal (Version 1.0) Review

Death to Diabetes: The Six Stages of Type 2 Diabetes Control and Reversal (Version 1.0)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is interesting that two of the most helpful books on diabetes that I have found - this one and "Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars" by Dr. Bernstein - were both written by diabetics and fellow engineers rather than by doctors. However, Dr. Bernstein is an engineer who went to medical school and became a doctor. Often it seems that those non-patients from the medical profession are stubbornly wed to what they have been taught is the truth about this disease regardless of outcome. Sometimes I wonder if it is the result of traditional medical training, based more on memorization than systematic problem solving, that causes this frustrating result.
In this book, the author goes over how he went from someone who went into a diabetic coma with a blood glucose of 1337 (80-120 is normal) who had been subsisting on processed food to someone who has slimmed down, learned to eat right, and now has a blood sugar in the 80-110 range. He talks about how the foods diabetics are not discouraged to eat by the medical profession such as potatoes, bananas, cereal, and many dairy products cause the blood sugar to spike and worsen glucose control. Instead, he recommends that you snack on veggies such as brussel sprouts. He even talks about his "power breakfast" - brussel sprouts with olive oil, salmon, and water. He determined what worked for him the same as Dr. Bernstein - by meticulous record keeping of his blood glucose after ingesting various foods.
The author also talks about other issues that will be more familiar such as exercise and record keeping. Also, he incorporates a spiritual component into his healing process that includes prayer and inspirational quotes. Finally, he talks about various nutritional supplements such as cinnamon, gymnema sylvestre, and bitter melon, and how each might be helpful in blood glucose control.
The reason I am only giving this book four stars is that, although everyone will be helped by reading this book and following its advice, not everyone will be, for all intents and purposes, "cured" of their diabetic condition. For one thing, the author is a man, and diabetes in women often faces the additional complications of insulin reacting with the female hormones to make the condition more difficult to treat. Then there are those of us with polyglandular failure where more than one of the endocrine systems fails - for example, hypothyroidism combined with diabetes greatly complicates the treatment of both conditions. Also, there are drug-induced cases of diabetes such as those caused by thiazide diuretics, necessary to limit blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals. However, if yours is a case where there is not a strong genetic component or complicating factors, and your lifestyle is the greatly dominating cause of the disease, you might be able to mimic the author's truly tremendous outcome.

I am a Chef/Instructor at a culinary school in Southern California. We use Cuisine and Culture for our food history class. This book reveals the author's true passion for food, and serves as the perfect complement to our World Civilization course. Not a dry textbook but an absorbing piece of literature, full of fascinating side-notes, dispels many urban legends, and provides historically accurate recipes that our students then make and bring into class. I especially like the time she spends on the 20th century, and her conjectures on the future of food. Definitely for anyone who loves food!

Creative thinking led them to what they thought was the antidote to the downside of Diosnysus: drinking purple wine from a purple vessel made of semi-precious stone would cause the two purples to cancel each other out and negate whatever was in the wine that caused drunkenness. In Greek, the prefix 'a" means 'not," methyein means drunk (from methy--wine), so the Greek word for 'not drunk" became the name of the purple stone the vessel was made of--amethyst.

Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year (Wise Woman Herbal Series, Book 1) (Wise Woman Herbal Series : No. 1)
Average Reviews:

You've heard of the "For Dummies" books? This should have been called "Herbal Medicine for Pregnant Dummies." The Wise Woman Herbal: The Childbearing Year is an excellent resource for any pregnant women, whether she has never considered herbal remedies before, dabbles in them occasionally, or is a full-fledged herbal practitioner, but it is very friendly to the newcomer to herbal medicine. The book includes simple prescriptions for those who don't want to get deeply involved in herbal medicine, such as drinking raspberry leaf tea daily throughout the pregnancy to strengthen the uterus. However, for those who are interested in more complex remedies, the author explains in great detail how to make infusions, tinctures, oils, etc., more so than any other herbal medicine book I've read. This is very helpful to people who have dabbled a little in herbology but have not found a mentor to teach them the ropes.
Included in the book is everything from herbal birth control to remedies for the newborn. Especially helpful is the listing of teratogens, or substances that can cause birth defects -- unlike other books on pregnancy, this book lists some common cooking herbs that should be avoided. Appendices include a listing of herbal sources for vitamins and minerals, and recipes for herbal tonics and medicines. A glossary is also included.
The author's interesting New Age spirituality and suspicion of technology (such as ultrasound) does not detract from the practical aspects of the book, but adds a sort of charm to the whole process. If asking a plant's permission before picking it isn't your cup of tea, just read those paragraphs with a grain of salt and take the information you need from the book.

This book is one of my favorites in Bussen's Simple Stunning series. I have almost all of them but this parties book is the best! The recipes are easy and the ones I've tried are delicious and each party idea is original and so creative. And the book itself is just beautiful to have on your shelf or coffee table. Highly recommend it!

I just couldn't get enough of this Jordan Poteet series, and even though I was dissapointed that it seems to have ended with "Distant Blood"; I look forward to the next closet sleuth I'm sure Abbott will create. All four of his novels left me wanting MORE MORE MORE!

The Dorm Room Diet: The 10-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works Review

The Dorm Room Diet: The 10-Step Program for Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan That Really Works
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oz talks sense. From the first chaper, I was hooked. She suggested making a minor change for the first week. I cut back on one soft drink per day - from 3 down to 2. That was quite painless. I also took her starter tips - drink water before meals and don't eat closer than 2 hours before bedtime. Again, those were minor and didn't crimp my style.
This is not really a diet book though it deals with diet (as in what you eat). It's really about living well and making mostly good choices but not going overboard (and ultimately failing).
Oz is a vegetarian, but she said that red meat was fine in moderation. Go for only twice per week on that she suggested. I love beef, but I also like chicken and fish and can tweak that part of my meal plan. Chips are junk food, but a bowl isn't a huge deal. Just don't grab the bag and keep munching. If you have an urge for chocolate, melt some semi-sweet chocolate and dip fruits like strawberries in the chocolate. It really does satisfy that chocolate craving with smaller amounts of chocolate.
That's typical of her advice and things that I can handle and maintain.
She also talks about exercise and about supplements (meant to supplement and not take the place of good food). She's reasonable with her ideas here as well. I added some extra work out time (even jogging 5 minutes while watching TV adds up if you do it pretty often) and bought a basic vitamin plus B, C and E (all heartily approved by my doc).
Oz lost 10 pounds her first semester. This is not a crash course. She's down 30 lbs now (over 2 years I think) - just slowly and surely. And, she's maintained rather than yo-yo'ing.
I think most people (college or not) would benefit from reading this book and trying out Oz's common sense plan. Older readers might need a little less food overall and might not opt to go out and have a snowball fight to burn calories, but the basics are here for a good lifestyle plan that isn't painful and does work.
This would be a great book for anyone (females more so) headed off to college or in college. Oz has dealt with being overweight. She did a lot of research and put a workable plan into action. I think most readers will love her style and also will be able to use her ideas and stay slimmer and healthier.

Very good book to have. Especially if you're having problems with "application" type questions on your tests. It comes with a CD too!. also full of questions, math questions as well..
You will actually learn a lot when you read the rationales. It gives you the reason why the answer is right or wrong. However, I was also expecting the book to have a generalized description of the most common drugs, but it doesn't. It is just full of questions, this will help you with your tests while in nursing school.

The Cancer Survivor's Guide: Foods That Help You Fight Back Review

The Cancer Survivor's Guide: Foods That Help You Fight Back
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased "The Cancer Survivor's Guide" for a course I was taking at Whole Foods Market in Sacramento, CA. I do not have cancer. I do not plan to get cancer. But then again, nobody does. My beloved, healthy, sister Debora died in 2007 from virulent cancer. I don't wish it on anyone.
While I was a patient of John McDougall in Santa Rosa undergoing his ten day program,my sister Debora was eating the "Atkins Diet." Five years later, I am alive and thriving and Debora is buried in a cemetery nearby.
Don't let this happen to you or your loved one.
I now have a weekly share of a vegetable crop in a C.S.A. farm nearby. I loved the Cancer Project Class. The recipes in this book are great. We got a chance to make several of them during the four week class. The Mashed Grains and Cauliflower on (p168) tasted great with mushroom gravy on top. I enjoyed the Black Bean Chili on (p121). I went into ecstasy over the Raspberry Salad Dressing on (p151) used on our green salad. The Sweet and Sour Stirfry on (p200) was an excellent dish and I learned to cook my root vegetables such as carrots and celery first as they take longer.
I toasted my brown rice prior to cooking it and there is a recipe for that in this book.
Enjoy the Gingered Melon(so easy to make) on (p218) as a wonderful dessert. Of course the Chocolate Mousse on (p215) is a tempting treat as well.
Whether you are looking to revise conventional recipes(p67), plan healthy cancer fighting meals that will slow down the course of cancer in your body, or if you just enjoy the taste of a good Roasted Red Pepper Hummus(p113)this book has an approach to healthy eating that we all can live with and enjoy.

Boozehound: On the Trail of the Rare, the Obscure, and the Overrated in Spirits Review

Boozehound: On the Trail of the Rare, the Obscure, and the Overrated in Spirits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I think if I died and was reincarnated I would want to come back as Jason Wilson. That man has a job of traveling to drink and write about various distilled spirits, what a gig! The nice thing is that author realizes he is pretty lucky to be a "Lifestyle Journalist" and he doesn't take himself too seriously.
This book "Boozehound," comes off as part memoir, part travel log, part spirits review and part cocktail recipe book. And in all those things it makes for a fun read. Wilson takes on a trip through his past while commenting on learning to taste and understand the flavors in spirits. He discusses cocktail snobs, searching for lost spirits and liqueurs, the great stories (True or not) behind many beloved alcohol brands, the world of Italian bitter drinks, a whole chapter on aquavit, terroir and its effect on spirits, and much more.
At the end of each chapter the author always gives out a handful of cocktail recipes, which are neither recipes that you have seen a hundred times before or amazingly complex examples of molecular mixology. They are just straightforward recipes that use the ingredients discussed in the proceeding chapter and out of the ones I have made they have been pretty good.
So while this book seems to cross many genres, part cocktail history book, alcoholic travel log, spirit critique and tasting notes, humor, and personal history I found it an enjoyable read; I learned a lot and had a great time reading it. If you are interested in this kind of stuff then you will like the book too, and if you have a friend or family member who enjoys the history and stories behind different spirits, then I think they may like this book to. I recommend it.
