Diet and Nutrition: A Holistic Approach Review

Diet and Nutrition: A Holistic Approach

This book is an encyclopedia of information, but I read it front-to-back like a novel. Not only does it describe the different food groups, vitamins and minerals, but it also explains the digestive process and how nutrients are absorbed by the body. Scientific principles are explained in a way that anyone can understand. As far as the information being outdated, the human body today works the same way that it did 20 years ago, so the information is still relevant.

The Book On Bookies: An Inside Look At A Successful Sports Gambling Operation Review

The Book On Bookies: An Inside Look At A Successful Sports Gambling Operation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Book on Bookies" is a manual on how to run a sports book in America. It must be noted that such an enterprise is illegal and carries various risk. The book constantly mentions large tax free income which adds tax evasion to your list of criminal activities.
My biggest gripe with the book is its deviation from factual and useful content. The "basics" chapter is riddled with glaring deficiencies - here are a few that I noted
(a) Book: there are no winning gamblers - truth: there are few winning gamblers, but the few winners can really hurt the bottom line
(b) Book: you cannot specify pitchers in baseball - truth: the standard way to book baseball is to offer listed pitchers
(c) Book: Dime line baseball is booked at -110 a side - truth: dime line baseball is booked at -105 a side
(d) Book: Soccer is booked without totals - truth: soccer is booked with totals, 2.5 being the most common number
(e) Book: Nascar is an easy money spinner - truth: Nascar is a sport where the lines are weak and the "wiseguys" can eat you alive
(f) Book: The "field" bet never wins in golf - truth: "No name" golfers are beginning to proliferate the winner's list at PGA and European golf tournaments
Aside from the factual inaccuracies, the book simply doesn't mention many of the important developments that have taken place in the bookmaking world. Important terms such as "beard", "middle" and "steam" are only mentioned in the glossary. Each term quite possibly deserves a chapter of its own. Finally, there is no mention of the ubiquitous "Don Best" screen, which governs the betting line from Vegas to the Caribbean. The way the author describes grading the wagers manually is almost comical.
The lack of professional writing skill is evident and the only thing that kept me reading to the end was the author's quirky sense of humour. My favourite line in the book is when he casually mentions "If you are going to be hiring someone to work with you in this business, you must...accept that at some time, he will probably steal from you". Although the author has a number of character flaws, this nonchalant attitude is something we could all use at times.
In summary I really cannot recommend this book to gamblers and especially not to anyone thinking of becoming a bookmaker!

How many cookbooks do you buy, look at them once or twice and then forget about them? This cookbook is packed with genuine Florida Keys recipes including my favorite, "Chardonnay Shrimp." Since most of the recipes come from Keys restaurants, the book also acts as a restaurant guide. Interspersed with old photos and the history of the area, the book gives new meaning to "flavor of the area." A must have for those who love food and the Florida Keys.

The first thing this book has going for it, is the size, since this is a book that you can carry with you on hunting trips as a step by step guide, or how to. Not only are the instructions absolutely complete but they are easy to follow, and the equipment required is inexpensive and in some cases free.
Every legally hunted bird is covered from field dressing, preserving to cooking and recipes.
The step by step instructions include either exact illustrations and/or black and white clear photographs. It is a book that the novice should own.

Legal Reason: The Use of Analogy in Legal Argument Review

Legal Reason: The Use of Analogy in Legal Argument
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Professor Weinreb's description of the analogical nature of legal reasoning will be immediately convincing to any experienced lawyer, and his defense of analogy against its academic detractors is equally persuasive. Unlike a great deal of trendy "interdisciplinary" scholarship, Weinreb is sure-footed and effective in his use of psychological research into analogical thought, and he is equally sophisticated in handling the jurisprudential issues. The book is written with the clarity and simplicity of a true master. This is a must read for anyone interested in how lawyers and judges think ... and should think.

Legal Reason describes and explains the process of analogical reasoning, which is the distinctive feature of legal argument. It challenges the prevailing view, urged by Edward Levi, Cass Sunstein, Richard Posner and others, which regards analogical reasoning as logically flawed or as a defective form of deductive reasoning. Lloyd Weinreb reveals that it is the same as the reasoning used routinely everyday--derived from the innate human capacity to recognize the general in the particular, on which thought itself depends. Moreover, the use of analogical reasoning is dictated by the nature of law, which requires the application of rules to particular facts.

Wicca: A Year & a Day: 366 Days of Spiritual Practice in the Craft of the Wise Review

Wicca: A Year and a Day: 366 Days of Spiritual Practice in the Craft of the Wise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book opens with the lesson of the Cauldron of Cerridwen. Each person who looks into Her cauldron sees the wisdoms they will need to follow the "Path of the Wise". This book takes a very unique look at a persons dedication to this path by creating a day to day guide for the dedicating solitary to learn the wisdoms they will need to follow the Wiccan path. Yes, this book focuses on the practicing solitary and is intended as a training guide to help you through the sometimes tough initial "Year and a Day" dedication that so many books only suggest you do. This book actually takes you there.
Timothy Roderick is a British Traditional Wiccan, who's previous books cover many aspects of Wicca, including working with the dark of the moon as well as familiars. He is a teacher of the occult, shamanism and mysticism. He is the founder of the "Earthdance Collective", a Wiccan community where he has been their spiritual director for over a decade. He comes to this book with some very impressive credentials and it shows in his work.
The book's layout is quite simple; it goes by each day. The exercises are not long or drawn out, but rather simple, concise and yet they cover much information. Day 1, for example, discusses Earth-Centered Spirituality, covering a little history, a simple exercise in connecting with the earth, and a simple set of questions designed to explore the exercise as well as exploring yourself. There are also little "dialogue boxes" designed to anticipate some questions or create a "sidebar" discussion for you to ponder further. Following "Day 1" is a list of items you will need for the next 30 days; a shopping list if you will of basic supplies.
Each day unfolds with a new topic, a new aspect or some new exercise to explore or think about. As I wandered through the material presented, I liked the way it was laid out, each day setting up for another lesson further along. Discussing words, discussing symbols, building on these words, finding acceptance in your own life for these words and symbols. It seems very basic and yet it is necessary when you are looking at a completely new spiritual path and new structure for your life.
The lessons become more advanced yet never too long or too boring. The material is very expertly explained, broken down to its simplest form, allowing the reader to keep up with the material without experiencing an information overload. Every month there is a "Contemplative Day" for the reader to experience, to explore and digest the material learned.
There are Devotional Days, honoring specific Deities, learning their stories, exploring Them and feeling Their energies.
While the book can be started at any time, Mr. Roderick does mention that traditional start time is sometime between Samhain and Candlemas (Imbolc). I found that the Sabats are all covered together in one section/month, rather than stretched out over the course of the book. This would allow the reader to start whenever they felt ready, rather that being restricted by the seasons or a calendar.
The book covers the daily topics well. They are good overviews of the topic. The exercises are well chosen for the beginner, as is the way the topical material is handled. Yes, this book addresses the average beginner. Yet it is not bound by that restriction. There is much information in here that would serve the slightly more advanced student, one who may have had basic studies and is looking to round out their studies with additional material. Yes, there are even a few "gee, I didn't know that" moments in this book for me.
The book contains illustrations of hand motions, tools, symbols, crafts, cards and more. The material covers a variety of topics from runes to alphabets, herbs to astrology. The material discussed covers a wide range of topics from tools to ritual basics to building power.
I really love the idea of this book, the way it is laid out and the material that is covered. It follows a very logical progression and is well thought out in that respect. Mr. Roderick writes in a style that is clear, in an easy to follow manner that is kept light and reasonable for the beginning practitioner.
If you are a solitary looking to start your year and a day dedication and do not know where to begin, start by checking into this book and see if you don't agree that this is a very good tool to get you started and on your way. I think you will actually find yourself following this book through to the end and you will get more out of this book than you thought possible. I do recommend this book for anyone looking for a very practical guide to the experience of the Wiccan "Year and a Day" personal dedication. boudica

Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis Review

Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
People diagnosed with an incurable disease are too-often targets of terribly unscrupulous or questionable methods of helping or curing them. When conventional medicine cannot cure us it is, to some degree, understandable. Dr. Bowling has put together a well-researched book that briefly discusses CAMs and various therapies, including yoga, tai chi, dietary supplements, vitamins and so forth. Each is briefly described, treatment method discussed, any known scientific research is summarized, side effects noted, practical information listed, and a conclusion and additional reading sources detailed. Dr. Bowling does note that some therapies, while not proven to help those with MS, may seem to help because of the "placebo effect." If it causes no harm, why not try it? However, some of these therapies can be detrimental to those with MS and it is wise to know what those are. This is a book for those who want objective and documented information. Some will claim it is biased against CAMs or undocumented therapies, but I did not find that to be the case. I found it very helpful.

The first edition of this authoritative book quickly became the single source for accurate and unbiased information on complementary and alternative medicine approaches for the management of MS symptoms. The second edition, completely updated throughout, reflects advances in the field since the book's initial publication in 2001. Therapies are organized alphabetically so that readers can easily pinpoint a specific treatment and learn about its origins, merits, and possible uses in MS. In-depth discussions cover Naltrexone, acupuncture, biofeedback, chiropractic medicine, cooling therapy, yoga, diets, the use of supplements, herbs, vitamins, and minerals, and many other topics. This invaluable guide alerts MS patients and their families to new options for relief when conventional therapies are limited; directs them to therapies that are effective, low-risk, and inexpensive; and helps them recognize those that are ineffective, dangerous, and costly.

This is a super introduction to the habit-forming, varied cuisine of New Mexico! The recipes are tested in the Cooking School, so you can be sure that they are workable. Since I have attended three classes at the school, it is with confidence that I recommend this book. The recipe for New Mexican Green Chile and Cabbage Soup with Sausage alone is worth the price! There is a good list of sources for Southwestern ingredients in the back. My only criticism is that I find the layout of the index to be confusing.

The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life: How to Reduce Fat in Your Diet and Eliminate Virtually All Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer Review

The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life: How to Reduce Fat in Your Diet and Eliminate Virtually All Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Standing out from a field of "fad" diet books(The Zone;Sugar Busters;Atkins, etc.) like a pearl in a sea of mud,The 10% Solution is a lucid, intelligently written,well-documented eating plan that really works.(I know--I've been following it for some time now, with fantastic results) Kurzweil is NOT a nutritionist--rather,he's a computer scientist--but he's clearly done his homework, and his writing style and format make it easy for anyone to understand the principles of a healthy diet. Yet he doesn't over-simplify,or insult the reader with emotional pleas and lack of documentation. In a nutshell, the "10% Solution" means that no more than 10% of the calories in your diet should come from fat. Extreme? (After all,the FDA,AHA,and other mainstream entities recommend a diet consisting of 30% of calories from fat) Not at all,as Kurzweil convincingly demonstrates. What's extreme is the eating habits cultivated by "developed" societies like our own ov! er the last century, where undue emphasis is placed on fat. The author compares our typical diet with one from rural Asia, along with respective heart disease and cancer rates. The figures are staggering. Yes--despite what you've heard from the latest fad diet promoters--fat IS the culprit(of course,SOME fat is necessary). A truly low-fat,nutritionally balanced eating program is an enormous factor in attaining good overall health. And,yes, you can(and will,no doubt) lose weight on this regimen--but more importantly, you'll feel better and improve your health immensely. Cutting down to 10% of calories from fat does take some adjustments, but it's not as hard to do as many may think, and Kurzweil makes it easier with a section of recipes. I've read quite a few books on diet and nutrition, and this is clearly the best-written one I've personally seen. Read it and change your life for the better.

Sport Review

I first read Sport some 7 or 8 years ago, and I loved it! I still have a copy though its worse for the wear. I cant believe it is out of print. The publisher should be ashamed. This book should be available for kids today to read because it gives a realistic impression of a young boy's hopes, wishes, disappointments, and problems with his family. The scenes with Sport and his mother are particularly scathing, with a wonderful counterbalance with his loving and warm father. I think many children face the issues Sport did as far as family goes. This book DOES NOT make everyone in the family all warm and gooey , it makes them realistic and complex, like life really is. Louise Fitzhugh, if you ever read this, you are a fantastic author and you should try very very hard to get this book republished.

I have not just liked, but loved every recipe I've tried from this cookbook. It has become my most frequently used cookbook for everyday meals. I have tons of recipes for really complicated holiday and party food but not that many for tasty meals that don't call for tons of ingredients. This book utilizes stuff most of us stock regularly. You might have to buy 1 or 2 extra items but you probably won't have to dedicate a day to acquiring what's needed like it is with some recipes. When a friend has a crisis or someone has a baby I make their meal from this book. They invariably ask me for the recipe. I bought this cookbook on impulse while on vacation and am so glad I didn't pass it up.

With 280 recipes for traditional, comforting, and fast family meals, there will be no excuses left for not bringing everyone together around a hearty plate of food.

Family Dinners features 280 recipes, plus valuable tips for saving time during meal prep, money at the grocery store, and your own effort by getting your family in on the cooking and cleaning. Make dinnertime the highlight of the day for everyone involved.

Family Dining Tips

Make sure dinnertime belongs only to you. Let the answering machine respond to phone calls, turn off the television, and put away the newspaper.
I
f your children are grown or older, turn dinnertime into a forum for discussion of current issues and happenings in the area and around the world.

As a family, volunteer at a local soup kitchen or food bank. This will help family members to appreciate dinner at home even more.

Hold a "crazy hat dinner." Invite each family member to wear their favorite or funniest hat to the table.

Discuss books during mealtime. Ask family members to share their current and longtime favorites.

Time-Saving Tips
I
nstead of cooking meatballs in a skillet on top of the stove, place them on a greased broiler pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.

If a piece of eggshell falls into your mixture, dip a larger piece of shell into the bowl. It adheres instantly.

The Red Wine Diet Review

The Red Wine Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This interesting book might have been more accurately titled "The Procyanidin Diet", but that would probably not help sales. Furthermore, it is not a weight loss book, or just a book about red wine.
Author and UK researcher Roger Corder makes a persuasive case in the book for the many health benefits of diet high in procyanidins, one of the phenols found in red wine, chocolate, apples, cinnamon and other plant sources. He gives specific recommendations for wines and foods, as well as recipes, that are high in procyanidins. It is possible to follow his recommendations without drinking any wine at all, but probably not as enjoyable.

Oddly enough, procyanidins are produced by plants in their skins and seeds for protection from rot and insects, and not for human benefit. Corder makes a convincing case that wine procyanidins are the solution to the "French Paradox" rather than the highly touted resveratrol; and their benefits to the human circulatory system have also been identified in certain red wine drinking populations in Sardinia, Crete, and Sicily, as well as Southwestern France. Other confirming evidence comes from the Kuna natives of Panama who drink large quantities of cocoa containing a similar dose of procyanidins, and who achieve the similar beneficial health effects.
Corder rates many red wines from * to ***** in order of their measured procyanidin content, with his highest ratings going to tannic and acidic wines such as tannat grape wines from the Madiran region of France. These wines tend to be the kind you want to drink with food. He suggests that two glasses of these highest rated wines give you 250-500 milligrams(mg) of procyanidins, his recommended dose per day for optimum health benefits. Since the procyanidins come from the grape skin and seeds, and they deteriorate over time, the highest concentrations are found in younger wines fermented for weeks in contact with the skins and seeds. As a general rule he found higher levels in Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
Corder also rates various foods in terms of his 4 oz glass of "good" procyanidin wine which contains about 60 mg. For instance:
2 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder (non alkali processed)
1 Tsp. cinnamon powder
1 apple
1/2 cup raspberries
1/2 cup cranberries
1.5 oz walnuts
All the above foods rate equivalent to Corder's "good" glass of red wine, so any four of them together would give you about 250 mg of procyanidins, his recommended minimum daily dose. Note that the estimate of the typical USA consumption of procyanidins is less than 100 mg per day, mainly from chocolate and apples. Corder argues that you should eat a diet with many sources of procyanidins because of the complexity of the chemistry and our incomplete knowledge of all the potential benefits.
Corder's book made me rethink the way I select wine and many foods.

Wine is good for you, and we finally know why. Wine drinkers are less prone to heart disease, diabetes, and dementia than non- wine drinkers. But what exactly is it about wine that keeps us healthy? Which is better for you, a California Cabernet or Syrah from the south of France? How can you choose wines that both suit your tastes and benefit your health? In a landmark study, Roger Corder revealed that compounds called procyanidins are the key components of wine for preventing illness. Now, in The Red Wine Diet, he argues that drinking the right kinds of red wine and eating procyanidin-rich foods such as dark chocolate, apples, and berries can help us live to a ripe old age-while enjoying all the pleasures of life. Corder's own tests show that, as a result of grape variety, wine-making style, and other factors, some red wines contain much higher levels of procyanidins than others. With a unique personal rating system, he describes the most beneficial wines he's found to date. And to round out his lifestyle plan, he includes fifty delicious recipes featuring foods that are high in procyanidins. Corder's prescription is an easy pill to swallow: Drink red wine every day and live a long and healthy life.
