The Spirited Vegetarian: Over 100 Recipes Made Lively with Wine and Spirits

To put this review into perspective for you, it is written by a serious student of cooking that has been actively studying food on their own for 25 years. I have been focusing on Italian food for the last 10 years. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America.
I purchased this book on a whim prior to embarking on a vegetarian lifestyle because I love to cook with alcohol and wanted to add more healthy meals into our family diet. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this book from day one.
The author includes a nice wine chart in the front of the book for those of you that aren't familiar with all types of wine. I found it handy since I tend to stick to the Italian wines.
Once I saw the recipe for Limoncello (a family staple in our home) I was hooked. If you have never made this yourself give it a try. The recipe is very simple and the end result is addicting. The recipe for spaghetti with beets is amazing. I never liked beets until I made this dish. It now reappears monthly in my home. Likewise, the chilled prosecco and melon soup is wonderful. It is such a refreshing start to a meal on a hot day. How about a Sangria fruit salad, that is included as well.
My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't have the pretty pictures that I love. If you are vegan this is probably not the book for you. Although I have been about to successfully adapt some of the non-vegan recipes with trial and error. If you have been a vegan and a home cook for long time you can probably do the same thing with ease.

The O2 Diet: The Cutting Edge Antioxidant-Based Program That Will Make You Healthy, Thin, and Beautiful Review

The O2 Diet: The Cutting Edge Antioxidant-Based Program That Will Make You Healthy, Thin, and Beautiful
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was going to wait to write my review on this diet until I'd been on it for a couple of weeks, but a reviewer made an interesting observation, pointing out that all of the current 5 star reviews seem fake (it's the only non-five star review so far), and now I'm wondering if Rodale employees really have nothing better to do. But I suppose that's not the point...
I have been on this diet for 6 days so far. This book starts you out with a 4-day "cleanse." No lemon water and pepper here, folks; you actually get real food for this one. She lays out a very strict meal plan - the same breakfast every day, same snacks everyday, and so on. Also, you're supposed to drink 8 oz of lemon juice mixed into 8 glasses of water everyday. I would HIGHLY advise investing in some sort of juicer. When I bought 21 lemons at the grocery store for my first week on this diet, the cashier looked at me like she knew what I was up to... Oh, she knew.
After four days, you won't want to look at another romaine salad, cinnamon-loaded granny smith apple, or basil eggs ever again. But then you step on the scale. I'll admit that I was a bit lazy about the exercise on these 4 days, and I only started out slightly above 150 lbs to begin with (I'm 5'6", btw), but I still lost 5.2 lbs during this time. Granted, a good chunk of that was probably water weight, but it's still quite motivating. I'll be happy to update my review as I progress along on this diet.
So even as "Wary," the above referenced reviewer, pointed out, this is probably a pretty average diet as diet books go. However, I think it's kind of neat to count antioxidants and strive for a large number (30,000 a day!) as opposed to sitting around thinking about how you only have 100 calories or 1 point or whatever left for the day. I have a lot more energy, my skin is clearing up, and I'm a lot less moody with my husband - All side effects I wasn't even expecting with this diet. And trust me, after those grueling first four days, it's well worth it.
UPDATE - 01/20/2010: I've done the 4-day cleanse plus 2 weeks on this diet now. As I said before, I lost 5.2 pounds during the cleanse. After the first full week after that, I lost an additional pound. I was SUPER lazy about the exercise though. (That means I didn't do it. *blushes*) After my second week, I lost an additional 1.2 pounds, and I actually did work out a few days this week using Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred, but I also went out to eat with my husband one night. I did try my best to find the healthiest thing on the menu, though! I'm sitting at 7.4 pounds total lost, and I am feeling pretty happy with that. I feel this is a lifestyle I could maintain long after my weight loss goals have been reached.

Mr. Boston Platinum Edition: 1,500 Recipes, Tools, and Techniques for the Master Mixologist Review

Mr. Boston Platinum Edition: 1,500 Recipes, Tools, and Techniques for the Master Mixologist
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was originally looking for a "regular" Mr. Boston book to arm myself with drink recipes for the occasional entertaining my wife and I do at our home. The book had been recommended to me by several friends as being the best bar guide available so I came to Amazon to begin my search. It was here I discovered Mr. Boston Platinum Edition. I ordered the book, it arrived quickly and I'm very impressed.
The book contains a lot more information than just drink recipes. It is an intersesting read and I was surprised to see a history of the origin of a lot of popular drinks. I love a good Manhattan and now I know the city, the "inventor" and the bar where this drink was developed. I also know the difference in the ingredients, what makes whiskey bourbon, rye, etc.
Many of the drinks in Mr. Boston have variations and they are listed with the reasons for the differences. I even know why a drink should be either shaken or stirred.
What I really like besides all the recipes is the section on essential home bar equipment. I have already looked at the web sites suggested in the book and started to order the equipment I need to outfit our new home bar.
The recipes have been contributed by many professional "mixologists" and it is evident that they take pride in their profession.
The book itself is very nice looking and well constructed. The ringed binder is sturdy and the book lay flat so I can read it while my hands are full of bottles and strainers.
This is the perfect book for me, being a beginner, and I highly recommend it for the home bar owner or for professional bartenter who is interested in the right way or a new way to mix a drink and arming himself with many interesting facts to relate to his customers.

Thanksgiving 101: Celebrate America's Favorite Holiday with America's Thanksgiving Expert Review

Thanksgiving 101: Celebrate America's Favorite Holiday with America's Thanksgiving Expert
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rick Rodgers has many previous cookbooks to his credit, but this is his best. Whether you are a veteran at Thanksgiving dinner prepapration, a first-timer, or somewhere in between, this volume will give you ideas, strategies, and a couple of wonderful stories about how the author has handled the meal over the years.
The recipes deal with formal service, buffets, and even a possible solution for cooks who have to deal with televised football that is in competition with the meal. Whatever your meal plans, there are ideas & solutions here.
There are many traditional dishes documented clearly for those of us who were not paying attention at Grandma's or Mom's elbow, along with some more modern variations on the Thanksgiving theme. Above all, Rodgers knows and understands the limitations of the average American kitchen, and just how much space that we have available in our freezers, refrigerators, and ovens. The recipes acknowledge this nicely, and he often presents a top-of-the-stove alternative to some dishes, rather than forcing us to jam yet another casserole into an already overcrowded oven.
On the subject of buffets (which more of us seem to be embracing nowadays), he gives some practical suggestions so that the host/ess does not end up with half a dozen veggie casseroles, but no salads. Many of the recipes have steps that can be prepared earlier in the week, and then put into play on the Big Day.
Most of all, there is a nice tone to the book. The author acknowledges many of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes that we have all known or experienced (Jell-O molds, Campbell's Green Bean Bake, canned cranberry sauce), while gently presenting alternatives for those who would like something just a little bit different this year.
It's only mid-October, but I now have my family's Thanksgiving dinner planned right down to the desserts!

The Ultimate Little Martini Book (Ultimate Little Drinks Book) Review

The Ultimate Little Martini Book (Ultimate Little Drinks Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Whether you just want a crisp cool drink to sip while on your deck, or are planning a party with tons of martini glasses to be filled, it's a great "go-to" book. We, personally, like to plan a gathering where we serve a "signature drink" when it's BYOB for a big bash and the focus is on food, as everyone gets to enjoy their own cocktail if they want, but try something new as well if they'd rather have that. This provides tons of options for a signature party drink or 1000.
It's a plus that name brands are suggested for each recipe, when needed. For example, if Finlandia Vodka is preferred in a certain recipe, that is noted, while Skyy Vodka may be the preference in another. Of course, you can use what you have at home instead, but I appreciate that they aren't plugging one certain brand in the book and really think about brand preference if it does matter to you. I don't always follow it...but it's there.
The book is set up alphabetically by drink name and they aren't just recipes from the author...the book is full of signature drinks from bars and restaurants that have a popular drink as well.
It's a little book and very thick...interspersed with cartoons featuring the martini.
I rarely look for a certain drink in the book...it's a tad more fun to just go through it and find something new to try...thus far, whatever we've tried we have enjoyed.
Conclusion: If it's a martini recipe, odds are it's in here. Simple recipes that are easy to follow from traditional to exotic.

Zero Proof Cocktails: Alcohol-Free Beverages for Every Occasion Review

Zero Proof Cocktails: Alcohol-Free Beverages for Every Occasion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pretty little recipe book is meant for two main audiences: those who don't like the taste of alcohol (some of us are quite sensitive to it), and those who can't drink it (for example, those whose religions forbid it). This way, those who find themselves longing for the intricate and interesting taste experiences that alcohol drinkers can enjoy can get in on the fun. Some of the recipes are meant to duplicate the flavors of existing drinks or alcohols for people who can't drink alcohol but enjoy it, while other recipes are simply meant to be delicious drinks in their own right rather than knock-offs of existing cocktails. Some drinks come with suggestions for substituting in alcohol for those who want to make two drink versions for their drinking and non-drinking guests. For those people who can't touch a drop of alcohol, there are great tips to help you watch out for "hidden" alcohol content in some ingredients you might otherwise think to use.
When I think of "cocktails" I tend to think of things like margaritas and martinis, but Liz Scott has taken a much wider view on the term! She has divided her book into five types of drinks: elixirs and aperitifs, martinis and party cocktails, mealtime libations, dessert drinks, and nightcaps. She includes a foreword on ingredients and equipment that's quite thorough, even addressing things like the fact that "alcohol-free" wine and beer can legally contain up to 0.5% of alcohol--an important detail for those for whom alcohol is a matter of prohibition, not taste. Many of the recipes come with gorgeous photographs that will certainly whet your appetite!
Elixirs and aperitifs are meant as before-dinner drinks, and were originally created as medicinal beverages. Many of them include herbal ingredients, and the recipes in this chapter are surprising and diverse. Even though I don't like the taste of alcohol and thus knew the serious mock-alcohols wouldn't be my favorite drinks, I could tell by the taste of the one we made (a mock sherry) that it was good, just not my thing.
The "mocktails" in the martini & party cocktails chapter are imaginative and fun! Whether you prefer mojitos, margaritas, or coladas, in orange, mango, lime, or pineapple, you'll find something in here to whet your appetite. There's a variation on a champagne cocktail in here that's just divine.
Mealtime libations are designed, much the way wine is chosen, to complement certain foods or meals. Want some non-alcoholic mimosas to go with brunch? You've got `em! A white tea infusion makes an alternative to white wine, and a dry grape grigio is designed to pair with poultry. The strawberry white sangria is so good I could make that recipe alone over and over. If you'd normally serve a Zinfandel, try the pomegranate-based "pom zinfandel."
Of course plenty of the drinks in the preceding chapters would make fine desserts, but Zero-Proof Cocktails goes one better with an entire chapter of specific dessert drinks. How about hopscotch eggnog (it uses butterscotch syrup in place of schnapps), or a toasted almond cordial?
Since nightcaps are meant to help one sleep or aid in post-dinner digestion, you'll find both mock versions of traditional nightcaps (such as spiced apple brandywine, which of course doesn't have any real wine in it) and a few originals. The almond roca buona notte is simple and heavenly, much like a cup of warm milk. There's a sweet ginger tummy tea, and even a catnip tisane!
The only difficulty is that the recipes do call for many unusual ingredients. There is, however, a listing of resource websites in the back of the book that will definitely help. I found blood orange bitters at Williams-Sonoma, and sparkling grape juice in the Kosher aisle at the grocery store. Our local Whole Foods Market had the no-sugar-added white grape juice. Other recipes call for exotic fresh fruits or juices, flavor syrups, or teas, but as long as you're willing to order a few ingredients online you should be fine.

As a member in RED standing of the Divine Sisterhood of the Dancing Divas, Red Hat Society-- this is not only a great book about our group but an excellent multi-purpose cookbook as well. Some of the high points are a collection of the "Impossible" recipes using baking mix that are always easy and tasty. Additionally, a large section in the back is devoted to cooking for one or two and this is especially welcome. I tried about a half dozen recipes, each was easy to follow and turned out yummy. My only suggestion or comment is that the print is a little small, but that is simply to accomodate the large number of recipes included. A good addition to any cookbook collection and a charming gift for anyone.

Thinking about herbs and their value in healing? Wondering how acupressure works? Not sure what macrobiotics are? Wondering how to heal yourself through good nutrition and supplements? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this complete natural healing collection is a book you simply must own.
Whether you are interested for the sake of wellness or in need of natural healing for a condition or disease, you will find the information you need inside the cover of this book. The book itself is larger than an encyclopedia, 10 1/2 by 13 3/4". It includes chapters on naturopathy, herbalism, homeopathy, aromatherapy, Eastern healing methods, energy healing, flower essences, mind-body healing techniques, healing with foods, nutrition, diet and supplements, and other healing techniques. Wow ... nearly 500 pages of information, suggestions, tips, charts, and tables. Amazing!
My favorites are the chapters on nutrition and herbs. There are some things that at the moment I don't have time to do, like growing my own sprouts, but with suggestions for every condition from eating disorders to high blood pressure and everything in between, the pages of this book are sure to be frequently referenced in my home, like the next time one of us gets poison ivy. Since we live in a wooded area, that happens more frequently than I like to remember.
Like Susan Schenk, I also am quite interested in the section on targeted nutrition. Most people wait until they have an affliction before they do anything about it. In the hospital where I work, our insurance costs are skyrocketing, and the top five diseases and conditions causing this rise are totally preventable. Many of our health problems today are due to our lousy diet.
Interested in prevention and natural healing? This is one book you need to order!

College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends Review

College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a foodie, but I like to cook. I've also found its one of the greatest ways to pull together people from diverse backgrounds--nothing like closeting a group of unrelated people in a cozy kitchen, pulling out some good food and drink, and chatting. Beats the heck out of the cardboard pizza most study and discussion groups serve. So, when I received a copy of Megan and Jill Carle's College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends, I have to admit I was more than ready to give it a go.
Now, normally a cookbook labeled "College Cooking" is going to have 101 things to do with Ramen Noodles or 100+ ways to microwave canned foods so that they no longer resemble canned foods. The Carles didn't take this approach, however. They've put together real recipes, using real foods. The catch is, you're going to need a real kitchen--or at least access to one--to make their dishes. Sometimes that's not such an easy item to come by when you're still in college--even if you are a graduate student.
What do the Carles have to offer? Let's take a look at last week's brunch: fresh tomato soup (ripe tomatoes, salt, milk, and pepper), chicken salad pita sandwiches (real chicken, lettuce, celery, cucumber, grapes and a peppery mayo), zucchini olive salad (strips of crisp zuchinni, garlic, basil, lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper, Parmesan, black olives and sunflower seeds), and lemon sugar cookies (made with real butter). Everyone had fun lending a hand with the meal and it was absolutely yummy!
Unfortunately, everything in this meal--with the exception of the zuchinni salad--required access to a full kitchen; and that particular fact applies to almost every recipe in the Carles' book. Also, the Carles give quite a few tips on making vegetarian dishes using their recipes; but few tips on making their recipes either low-cal or low-fat. All of which explains why I'm reviewing this particular "College" cookbook on the graduate school site and not the colleges site--graduate students have been out of the nest long enough to have learned a few tricks to manage these particular issues.
If you do have access to a full kitchen (and a nice enough bank balance to afford some of the more particular ingredients these recipes call for--like fresh black olives as opposed to canned), the Carles have put together a really nice collection of recipes covering everything from comfort foods to party foods in College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends.

You have a midterm tomorrow and a fierce growl in your stomach. Your roommate just nabbed your last cup o' ramen. Do you: (A) Ignore your stomach and brew another pot of coffee? (B) Break out the PB&J? (C) Order pizza—again? (D) Make a quick trip to the grocery store? The answer's D, and College Cooking is the only study guide you'll need.Sisters Megan and Jill Carle know all about leaving a well-stocked kitchen to face an empty apartment fridge with little time to cook and very little money. They practically grew up in their parents' kitchen, but even that didn't prepare them for braving the supermarket aisles on their own. That's why they wrote COLLEGE COOKING—to share the tips and tricks they've learned while feeding themselves between late-night studying, papers, parties, and other distractions.Starting with kitchen basics, Megan and Jill first cover ingredients, equipment, and other prereqs for cooking a decent meal. They then provide more than ninety simple yet tasteworthy recipes—hearty home-style dishes, study-break snacks, healthy salads, sweet treats, and more (along with low-cal and veggie options). You'll find easy and cheap-to-make dishes, like: Tortilla Soup • Chili with Green Chile Cornbread • Chicken Salad Pita Sandwiches • Baked Penne Pasta with Italian Sausage • What's-in-the-Fridge Frittata • Peanut Butter Cup Bars • Brownie Bites You'll also find recipes for feeding a household of roommates, maximizing leftovers, cooking for a dinner date, and hosting parties with minimal prep and cost. Just consider COLLEGE COOKING your crash course in kitchen survival—and required reading for off-campus living.Reviews"College Cooking is a must-pack, along with the fry pan and the blender, for those going back to college or starting this year."—Arizona Republic"The recipes are quick, easy, and simple."—Kansas City Star"This is reasonable food reasonably fast. Drink This: Wine Made Simple Review

Years ago Dara wrote a food column with step-by-step instructions for learning the concept of "dry". Several friends and I had a blast (aided by 6 bottles of wine and as many beers) as we compared wines, beers, cheeses, fruits and crackers to get an in-depth understanding of dry. At the time, we wished Dara would do more of this type of writing. Now she has. I assembled my friends together again and we started with the Zinfandel chapter. As one friend said after the Zinfandel was gone, "I could have learned this in a class, but this was much more fun." It was also educational. By following Dara's instructions, I finally can taste pepper, cinnamon or blackberries in wine. We are already planning our next wine tasting party. Read This.

Nutrition Almanac Review

Nutrition Almanac

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!
The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.
The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.
