The recipes are easy to follow. The food turns out wonderful and still with lots of flavor. Try the breakfast sausage recipe. I was so sorry to have to give up sausage but this is a great alternative!

Cooking for David: A Culinary Dialysis Cookbook Review

Cooking for David: A Culinary Dialysis Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was diagnosed with stage 3 CKD back in June. So I thought this book would be helpful to me. And it was. On the dissappointing side, there are a few too many recipes with canned fruits and cool whip for my taste. I also have multiple food allergies (what a nightmare, food allergies AND CKD!!! )including a shrimp allergy and many of the main course and appetizer recipes use shrimp. Although I'm not on dialysis I have pretty much the same restrictions. This book was a good starting point for recipe ideas. Also, she gives a great deal of information about why CKD management is so important, that was very helpful and educational.
However, I found getting a good gram/ounce food scale and a copy of the USDA food nutrition data base more helpful for me [...] buy a hard copy here on Amazon). I prefer a whole food diet and am now just converting my old recipes. Although this is a pain in the butt, I find spending a bit of time doing this more helpful for me. Also, write on freezer bags and masking tape are god sends for labeling frozen food and cupboard kept ingredients. For those who don't want to spend the time doing this, get this book.
Now matter what book we buy, we still have to spend a lot of time attending to our diet. And even though I rated this book 3 stars, I'm grateful to the women who wrote it. Like many of you who are dealing with this new life style, it can seem overwhelming at first. (Who knew guacamole could be so deadly?)Hang in there!
8/25/06 Recently I found software is available that will track all this for you. I purchased Diet Pro, which was easy to customize to my needs. It uses the same nutrition tables the dieticians use (USDA)and has made my life much easier! It will take food amounts by weight or volume amounts and show you your daily nutrition intake. I can also put in recipes and get a nutrional breakdown per serving, and save the recipes in a file. I no longer spend hours calculating my daily nutrition. There are other programs out there too. Diet Pro was the least expensive.

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything (Cooking)) Review

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything (Cooking))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been dabbling here and there with a rawfood lifestyle and I bought a stack of books to get me started. By far this book is the easiest to follow, most colorful, and they have great recipes that have turned out exactly as explained. I made a great recipe out of this book which I took to two potlucks (raw and a normal meat eater) and a lot of people raved about it. From appetizers to salads, burgers, breads, meals, and desserts this is a great source. Also, one final yet critical thing I like that the authors do is tell you exactly how long and the necessary temperature to have things in the dehydrator which is a common mistake I have discovered many people make in books and on youtube - they leave it out. All in all, this book is an absolute MUST HAVE for a new raw foodie or a seasoned raw foodist. Enjoy.

The 1500-Calorie-a-Day Cookbook Review

The 1500-Calorie-a-Day Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everything the first cookbook, The 1200-Calorie-a-Day Menu Cookbook : Quick and Easy Recipes for Delicious Low-fat Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, and Desserts wanted to be and wasn't. Don't get me wrong; it was fine for its time. This book is just plain better.
Updated recipes with 9 or fewer ingredients and less reliability on fat-free, chemical-laden frankenfoods. (Although there are some!)
The entire meal takes less than 30 minutes--the whole menu complete on one page. Calorie count and other nutritional information provided for each recipe/menu including identifying menus higher in fiber, vitamins A & C, and calcium.
I made the Creamy Pumpkin Pie dip for our dance troupe hafla and it was a big hit! Nothing to take home.
She doesn't provide grocery lists. That will depend on what menus you choose. But, she does offer a brief nutritional introduction (just enough to keep your eyes from glazing over)and suggestions for what to do with leftovers. I'm all about freezing extra portions for later so I don't mind a recipe that serves 4-6.
Those who've read some of my other review will note that I'm a BIG fan of mix and match diet cookbooks. If I was going to buy a companion volume, I'd choose The All-Natural Diabetes Cookbook

What Can I Bring? Cookbook (Cake Mix Doctor) Review

What Can I Bring Cookbook (Cake Mix Doctor)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a good cook and baker, but every time I have to bring something to a get-together, I end up obsessing over what to bring. I fall back on the same old things so much that I get bored, even though people seem to enjoy what I bring. Recently, I have been asked to bring food for various organizations/activities--probably at least once a month. This book, which is under $20.00, is well worth the price. It has more than 200 recipes, and there is a very good variety of recipes, including vegetarian ones or ones that could be easily made vegetarian/vegan. That's important to me because I have a vegetarian daughter. It is great that the author provides information on how to increase the amount of servings if practical, and provides a time-line of how long to expect to take to make the dish. Her notes on "how to tote" the dishes are helpful, since getting the dish there intact is important. There are some recipes at the end of the book for gift-giving and they will be wonderful for Christmas gifts. I like that the author did all my trial-and-error work for me--testing what goes over well at a pot-luck, is fairly simply to make, and travels well. I want to buy more of her books after purchasing this one, because her recipes are "real life, without too many exotic ingredients, and food that people would actually eat.

The Ultimate Rotisserie Cookbook: 300 Mouthwatering Recipes for Making the Most of Your Rotisserie Oven (Non) Review

The Ultimate Rotisserie Cookbook: 300 Mouthwatering Recipes for Making the Most of Your Rotisserie Oven (Non)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Diane Phillips is truly amazing! In 'The Soup Mix Gourmet', she elevated the humble and oft-maligned canned and/or dried soup to haute cuisine. She's done it again with 'The Ultimate Rotisserie Cookbook'. This appliance has exploded onto the kitchen scene and is now, thanks to Ron Popeil and George Foreman, widely used in American homes.
Phillips cites dry rubs as 'part and parcel of what makes delicious rotisserie and grilled food'. In the chapter, 'A Whole Lot of Saucin' Going On', she delights us with recipes for not only rubs, but marinades, salsas, pesto, and a wide variety of finishing sauces. The Fiesta Rub combining chili powder, cumin and oregano made a meal of chicken breasts exploding with flavor. There are over 50 pages in this chapter and this alone will allow you to experiment with new and old flavors and tastes.
Additionally, Ms. Phillips discusses poultry, beef, lamb, pork and vegetables. Each chapter begins with a listing of the recipes and the appropriate page number. Also included are spice and sauce 'no brainers', a list of spices and sauces that complement the particular meat or vegetable. Cooking times for doneness are particularly helpful in the meat chapters.
Just when you think you have tried almost everything in the rotisserie, comes the chapter entitled, 'Hot and Sweet'. Fruit is showcased here and the Rotisserie Caramel Apples will have the kids screaming for more! The book concludes with a collection of side dishes to accompany your rotisserie meal. Here you will find baked beans, potato and rice dishes and some salad suggestions, to mention only a few.
As you can probably tell, I love this book! I have owned a Showtime Rotisserie for over five years and there is nothing to compare to the simplicity of use and the scrumptious results. Dianne Phillips has increased the possibilities for this appliance dramatically AND deliciously. A book on this subject is long overdue as it is easy to get tired of whole chickens. If you are a rotisserie user or considering the purchase of one, this book is a 'must buy'.

Taste of Home: Busy Family Cookbook: 370 Recipes for Weeknight Dinners Review

Taste of Home: Busy Family Cookbook: 370 Recipes for Weeknight Dinners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this cookbook a month ago and have tried several different recipes. So far my family has loved every single one of them, and there are a lot more that I can't wait to try. This cookbook is designed for busy families (in case the title didn't tip you off); if you have the time, energy, and desire to cook exotic and extravagant meals, this is not the cookbook for you. But if you're like most families I know, and so busy that you have the pizza place's number memorized, then you should definitely give this book a chance. Regarding an earlier review, I agree that this is a good cookbook for a new cook, but I would also recommend it to any busy family, even if the cook has some experience. It's easy to get stuck in a "dinner rut" when you're constantly needing fast & easy meals; this cookbook is the cure. I'd also recommend it for families with picky eaters, as the recipes can satisfy the adults' desire for something different without being so exotic that the kids won't eat it. I've looked at other cookbooks and haven't found any that had such a large number of recipes that I wanted to try. The recipes are all quick and easy, and they don't require obscure ingredients. I love that most of the recipes include a photograph and a brief comment. I used to agonize over what I'd fix for dinner on weeknights; now I'm excited, thinking "which recipe should I try next?" This cookbook is well worth the money--5 stars.

I bought this book because I was looking for recipes using Splenda, and were low in sugar, fat and calories as my husband is a newly diagnosed diabetic. I tried the Banana Muffins recipe first, fully expecting them to taste like "diet food." Wow! Was I ever surprised! I liked the muffins so much, I made them for friends and family who loved them so much they begged me to make more. My husband raved about the Banana Muffins to his doctor who promptly rushed out to buy the book for himself! The books gives analysis per serving info (the main reason I initially bought the book) and the recipes are incredibly easy to follow and taste yummy. We both have hope because of this book that we can eat a variety of healthy, tasty food. This cookbook is the only one I have in my kitchen now. God Bless Marlene Koch for this wonderful book!

Lick It Creamy Dreamy Vegan Ice Creams Your Mouth Will Love Review

Lick It Creamy Dreamy Vegan Ice Creams Your Mouth Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In addition to being allergic to dairy, I also have to avoid wheat (and corn and soy). So the closest thing I've had to a dessert in years is sorbet, and even then I feel guilty about all the white sugar.
I've made two of Cathe Olson's ice cream recipes so far: coconut, by hand (before I had an ice cream maker, and it really wasn't very hard to do) and chocolate...both fabulous. Not only am I not allergic to them, I don't even have to feel guilty. Just a little agave as a sweetener, all natural, full of food value...it's like a pleasant dream I would have.
(Note: I love coconut milk, but thought it would change the experience of chocolate ice cream. Not so much. It just tasted like chocolate...very rich and creamy...and I was not aware of a coconut base.)
I've been using almond milk instead of soy and it works wonderfully, I highly recommend this book for anybody who wants to get away from dairy...and I think many people might be happier and healthier (and less stuffy) if they tried it.

DIY Cocktails: A Simple Guide to Creating Your Own Signature Drinks
Average Reviews:

When I picked this book up, I thought it was going to be chock full of recipes to dazzle my friends and neighbors with as they marveled at my creativity. Unfortunately for that stated goal, that's not what this book is about - although there are several tasty recipes and I had one tonight only as an effort to "test" the authors.
What this book does for me is to give some background on the various types of adult beverages, how to mix things with ratios, and gives a very good background on what goes with what as well as the effect of adding or subtracting various mixtures. From little things such as scoring a piece of lemon or orange rind to the color of the ice cube had me learn a thing or two.
If you're looking for some background on how you can make things a heck of a lot better than just rum and coke, then this book is for you!

After my husband had emergency heart bypass surgery and we were suddenly plunged into a low-fat lifestyle, I looked at almost every low-fat cookbook in print. This one is my favorite. There are full-page color photos and a complete nutritional analysis for each recipe. The recipes are easy and taste good, and don't use weird ingredients like pureed prunes or carob powder. The Lemon Meringue Cake with Strawberries was a big hit - I plan to try out the Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake, too. Overall, a very easy introduction to a different way of life.

From the novice vinter to a more experienced hand, this book is one of the better ones I have seen. At the start, the author describes and explains the homewine-making process, the equiptment necessary, the "lingo", and gives a desent time-line for completion. The recipies are usually simple and are for one-gallon batches. Some are a little weird, but it does say "unusual" in the title. A definate recommendation for anyone who is avidly homebrewing wine or mead.

After months of doctor appointments, I was finally diagnosed with Candida. I knew nothing about candidiasis and so I started searching the web for information. I found so much varying information and most of it I didn't trust. When I found this book (...), I knew it was right. This book contains the most comprehensive, easy to understand information that I've found. The author is very thorough without going into overwhelming detail. I started following the diet and techniques almost immediately since the book gets right into problem solving. I can say my health has improved almost 100% in a very short time.
