Diet and Nutrition: A Holistic Approach Review

Diet and Nutrition: A Holistic Approach
Average Reviews:

This book is an encyclopedia of information, but I read it front-to-back like a novel. Not only does it describe the different food groups, vitamins and minerals, but it also explains the digestive process and how nutrients are absorbed by the body. Scientific principles are explained in a way that anyone can understand. As far as the information being outdated, the human body today works the same way that it did 20 years ago, so the information is still relevant.

The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook: Your Everyday Reference to the Best Herbs for Healing Review

The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook: Your Everyday Reference to the Best Herbs for Healing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am quite impressed with this book. The amount of information that Duke has crammed into this slim volume is unbelievable. The herb profiles contain everything you would want to know about an herb before using it. The safety rating is such a great tool. I wonder why Duke is the first herbalist to think of it (at least I think he's the first. Never seen it in any other herbal). In this collection of herbs, there are North, South and Central American plants as well as European and Asian ones. There's a nice therapeutic index too, listing what herbs are good for which conditions. Duke has a great writing style. It reflects his incredible knowledge, sense of humor and just plain common sense. Excellent book! If I could only have 3 herb books, this would be one of them.

Your Health Is Your Responsibility Review

Your Health Is Your Responsibility
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This densely packed book is so full of health information that it resembles an encyclopedia. The author says that she wrote the book to help others after she discovered that she had diabetes at the young age of 35. It's obvious that she took responsibility for her own health and learned everything she could, not only about her disease of diabetes, but about healthy eating and living in general.
The author discusses in depth the factors such as smoking and lack of exercise that adversely affect your health. She admits she had a tendency to develope diabetes because of her genetic makeup, but she doesn't let herself or her reader off the hook for taking responsibility of their health. The major area where the author calls upon the reader to take responsibility in in the area of food. She looks closely at the American diet and lifestyle choices, and makes recommendations to improve them. She also looks closely at the causes of several of the most common diseases in our world today such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis.
Available at Amazon Your Health is Your Responsibility is priced at $22.95, which is a bargain for this huge book.

Food As Medicine: How to Use Diet, Vitamins, Juices, and Herbs for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life Review

Food As Medicine: How to Use Diet, Vitamins, Juices, and Herbs for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Your body has the ability to heal itself if you just give it a chance. Using food as medicine gives [you] the greatest chance of all to heal....What you eat can either prevent cancer and other chronic illnesses or help cause them....My number one recommendation is to eat a rainbow of fresh fruits and vegetables every day." Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.
FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent.
Dr. Khalsa writes a chapter about each of his seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy to help you restore balance to your body, mind and soul. They are:
1 Detoxify your body. (If fasting isn't for you, you can take two 450 mg aloe vera tablets at night or go on a monodiet.)
2 Go organic. ("The switch to organic food is vital if we are to save our environment.")
3 Limit or eliminate genetically engineered foods. (Examples include: aspartame, canola, corn, cotton, crook-necked yellow squash, dairy products, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, and tomatoes.)
4 Eat clean protein. (Buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, and venison are some non-traditional sources. I personally enjoy the latter very much. Choose chicken and fish--preferably wild salmon or other oily fish. Shark, swordfish and tuna also have potential problems with contamination--mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic. Also soy protein and definitely beans and legumes are great--they have almost no fat and are rich in fiber and good carbohydrates.)
5 Discover juicing and supplements. (I don't do this one because there is more fiber in the fruit than the juice and that is good if you want to avoid getting type 2 diabetes down the road.)
6 Cook consciously and eat mindfully. (Chew slowly, savor your food, sit down and relax and "remember that everything we eat comes from God, as do our health and healing.")
7 Make the transition to the yoga nutritional therapy diet. ("By following a plant-based diet, you will find that you have improved focus and higher productivity in your daily life.")
My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity."
Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

A Life in Balance: Delicious Plant-based Recipes for Optimal Health Review

A Life in Balance: Delicious Plant-based Recipes for Optimal Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a complete review with photos of recipes I tried from A Life In Balance, please visit: [...]
I first came across Meg Wolff at the Huffington Post where she writes regularly, featuring stories about the positive impact of a plant-based diet on health, as well as anticancer recipes.
A Life In Balance is Meg Wolff's third book, this time a cookbook with a collection of easy, approachable plant-based recipes. For anyone who is new to a plant-based diet, or just trying to increase plant-based foods in their daily meals, Meg's cookbook is a terrific introduction.
Meg Wolff, a two-time cancer survivor (first bone cancer, then breast cancer), switched to a plant-based diet 12 years ago, after doctors gave her virtually no hope (she endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation).
This compact cookbook, published by Down East, offers over 120 easy to follow recipes, including 31 recipes from guest contributors, including Rory Freedman, bestselling author of Skinny Bitch, Rip Esselstyn, author of The Engine 2 Diet, and John Salley, three-time NBA champion.
The foreword is written by Dr. Colin Campbell, author of "The China Study," a study which provides scientific information on the overwhelming health benefits of eating a plant-based diet. Dr. Campbell writes, "Meg's book tells a real-life example of the power of a plant-based diet, not only to prevent but also to reverse chronic disease. We are reaching a tipping point, and a critical mass of success stories like Meg's is accumulating."
As Meg notes in her introduction, it only takes small steps to add up to better health over time. The recipes are easy to follow and range from basic recipes for beginners like Amazingly-Good-For-You Brown Rice and Oven-Roasted Veggies, to more adventurous recipes such as Black Bean and Corn Bread Casserole, and Sweet Potato and Arame Salad with Asian-Style Tartar Sauce. Sprinkled throughout the book are helpful tips, variations on recipes and notes, such as "Even Small Changes Can Make A Difference" and "Snacking Strategies."
The recipes are divided into seven sections: Grains, Bean and Bean Products (tofu, tempeh, seitan), Vegetables, Soups, Sea Vegetables, Salads, and Snacks and Desserts. I chose a handful of recipes to try, including several with ingredients I had either never tried before or was not that familiar with, such as delicata squash, arame, and tempeh. I also made a few recipes which were much more familiar, including Lemony Hummus and Glazed Brussel Sprouts.
I have to say that I was not a tempeh fan until I tried the recipe for Good Egg Café Tempeh Hash (contributed by Mary Ledue Paine, owner of The Pepperclub/Good Egg Café in Portland, Maine). This dish is one of Meg Wolff's favorite treats when she dines at this cafe, and now I know why. Another taste-altering dish was the Glazed Brussels Sprouts.
My 8-year old, who is not a brussels sprout fan, liked the sweet glaze on the sautéed brussels sprouts (he also gobbled up half of the Lemony Hummus as an afternoon snack). All of the recipes were easy to follow, and I was thrilled by the end of my mini cook fest to have an assortment of dishes to choose from for several meals to come.
I love Meg's inspirational and encouraging tone throughout her book. The clear and easy to follow recipes make taking steps towards a plant-based diet completely within reach.

Feeding the Whole Family: Whole Foods Recipes for Babies, Young Children and Their Parents

In the 18 months I have been using this cookbook, it has always given me excellent meals and valuable cooking tips. It is the perfect cookbook for the experienced wholefood cook or for a person, especially a parent, wanting to begin experimenting with the health-sustaining wholefood diet. The author even includes at the bottom of each recipe ways to adapt the food for a 'new eater' so parents don't have to cook separate meals for each member of the family.
Also, particularly helpful is her chapter on healthy lunches, which gives great ideas for packable wholefoods - usually a daunting task in these days of take-out/fastfood. The cooking tips throughout the book and her glossary at the back include extremely helpful and often hard to find information which helps make wholefoods less intimidating and much tastier. This cookbook and Annemarie Colbin's cookbooks (The Natural Gourmet and Book of Wholemeals) are my constant kitchen references

For anyone (like me) who knows very little about cooking has even less time do it, and does not like fast food or hamburger helper, this is a great book. It combines a practical variety of meals which taste much better than frozen dinners and don't take a lot of time to prepare. The ingredient lists are short and most importantly, you don't need a dictionary to decipher the various items on them. It is a very down-to-earth cook book and I have found it much more useful than the giant cooking encyclopedias and other recipe books I've bought in the past. So take a look at it and enjoy!

What Color Is Your Diet? Review

What Color Is Your Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Almost a year ago, my husband decided he needed to lose weight (his doctor had been telling him to do so for years; he was verging into diabetes despite being on Glucophage, Glucotrol, and Lipitor). My husband's one criterion was he wanted a diet that allowed him to eat frequently during the day because he didn't want to be hungry. Enter Heber's book!

Merely by increasing the number of vegetables and fruits that my husband ate, he crowded out the crap he'd been obliviously living on. He began to count calories because the results from merely eating more healthily a la Heber made him feel very positive. In six months, he lost sixty-five pounds. His cholesterol went from 220 (a number achieved with the help of those meds) to 125. He's kept the weight off five months now, but we are determined that he will be eating this way for life. We have a word in our household: Heberific. My husband's Park Avenue doctor phoned me and said: "I didn't recognize your husband from his numbers [meaning his blood test numbers]. They've never looked like this! You've added at least ten years to your husband's life, and really fifteen quality years. You are a hero!" I accepted the compliment because it's I who do most of the food preparation.
Now I go to the fruits-and-vegetable market almost every day. I too have made a game of tracking what color fruits and vegies my husband is eating (I composed a daily chart; I've noticed another reader said he did the same thing). I keep meaning to write Dr. Heber a thank-you letter but then I thought perhaps I should simply post my praise on Amazon.
I know Dr. Heber formulated this way of eating primarily to safeguard people from the major chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer) that are diet related, but this way of eating is fun and has had extraordinary results in my family. I've given this book to my parents (who are not overweight) and recommend it incessantly. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that five stars for this book isn't enough.

Grow Younger, Live Longer: Ten Steps to Reverse Aging Review

Grow Younger, Live Longer: Ten Steps to Reverse Aging
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have regularly practiced Transcendental Meditation (TM) for a number of years, having originally become interested in it through one of Dr. Chopra's first books. I have found the practice to be a helpful one, and regularly recommend it to others. I have also experienced Ayurvedic health treatments and have read about the practice. As a result, I always look forward to reading Dr. Chopra's new books.
Grow Younger, Live Longer is an update on Ageless Body, Timeless Mind. The authors describe the Ayurvedic principles (practiced in India for many hundreds of years) of self-healing in a more detailed and understandable way than in any of Dr. Chopra's earlier books. Long-time practitioners of Transcendental Meditation will find little new in the book. Those who do not meditate now will find the book an easy, comfortable way to begin mind-body integration in ways that will probably help physiological and psychological health.
The authors argue that by forming ten new habits (by following the recommended practices for at least 10 weeks), you can "reset your Biostat (your biological or functional, age) up to fifteen years younger than your chronological age." Your Biostat is determined by various measures of your body's functioning, as compared to the average of people of the same sex and age. That point is not proven, however, in the text of the book. Many references care made in the notes. I am aware of studies done by practitioners of Transcendental Meditation that show such effects, which may be part of what the claim is based on. Some scientists have criticized the studies for potential bias because practitioners conducted almost all of the studies. The authors are not recommending TM, but rather other versions of meditation. Some nutritional and relationship studies have shown reversals of such biological markers.
You are encouraged to psychologically reframe aging to "an opportunity for greater wisdom, love, creativity, meaning, joy, and increased mental and physical capacity." "The real purpose of the book is to remind you, the reader, that this deeper reality, the domain of pure potentiality of spirit, is who you really are." "To know a person's body in the future, examine their experiences now." This sort of writing will remind you that Dr. Chopra likes to use Quantum physics as a metaphor for explaining the potential benefits of spiritual practices....
I also found much more scientific explanation here than in his earlier books about why these changes should be helpful. These were most detailed in the nutrition and exercise sections. The recommendations were explained in enough detail that I think that most people could understand and follow them. You will also find at least half of these food, water, and exercise recommendations in the better health books. The emphasis on spiritual and pscyhological practices is much stronger here. A good book on the importance of love from the scientific perspective is Dr. Dean Ornish's Love and Survival. The book also ends with a long section of vegetarian recipes from various cuisines (Thai, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, French, American, and Middle Eastern) for seven sample menus. These have fairly extensive lists of ingredients, and you may need to buy some provisions you don't have now. Tamari sauce is a good example of something that is not present in many American larders.
This book will probably be most appealing to a retired person who finds her- or himself feeling disconnected from a meaningful purpose. The practices here would be most helpful in that situation, and a retired person would have the time to take on the many new habits suggested here. Although middle-aged people with children at home would feel like they could never take the time to do these things, they would probably benefit even more from the stress reduction that these practices could bring.
I would also enourage you to learn about practicing TM. With that change, you would probably find it easier to make these other changes that Dr. Chopra suggests. Most cities have TM centers where you can locate a teacher. You can go to introductory sessions at no charge. The yoga in this book will make a nice complement to your meditation practice.
Take life's unexpected events less personally and with more curiosity!

Bob's Red Mill Cookbook: Whole & Healthy Grains for Every Meal of the Day Review

Bob's Red Mill Cookbook: Whole and Healthy Grains for Every Meal of the Day
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm really liking this book. I always start my "whole grain cookbooks reviews" with a statement that I live about 5 minutes from the Bob's Red Mill headquarters and their amazing bulk section, so it doesn't come as a surprise that this book is on my bookshelf. I bought it alongside Bob's Red Mill Baking Book but this definitely gets more use.
It has a good combination of vegetarian/vegan and meat recipes. I recently decided to become "at-home" vegetarian (I know it's sort of tongue-in-a-cheek kind of deal but... I'm not buying and cooking with meat at home, but I still eat meat outside the house) and this book has been an awesome help with its inventive recipes. Lately, I've been focusing on the whole grain salads (Basmati Vegetable Salad with Fragrant Vinaigrette is spectacular) and soups (Kasha Purifying Soup is my favorite so far). I've tried multiple other recipes, and each turned out tasty.
I wasn't very succesful with the recipes from the "Sweets" section, though, but I've only tried 2 so far, so I'm not giving up on it just yet.

The Type 2 Diabetes Diet Book, Fourth Edition Review

Although I haven't read any of Dr. E's book thoroughly, I have been one of his patients. In Aug. 2008 I reached 196 lbs. having been only 128 lbs. just a few years earlier. I was frustrated at the continuous weight gain despite all attempts at dieting and exercising. Finally, my gynecologist referred me to Dr. E. who diagnosed my insulin resistance, sleep deprivation, etc. and put me on a diet program. It worked. I lost 6 lbs. the first week and a safe 1.5-2 lbs. each week after and have kept the weight off. More notably, I learned that my body is, indeed, insulin resistant and that insulin was responsible for my aches and pains, fatigue, etc. On day 2, I noticed a marked difference in morning aches and pains. And, by day 3, I was able to run down the stairs in the morning without hanging on to the railing.
I know that not everyone has the opportunity to see Dr. E personally. But, I feel that if you follow his advice in this book you will lose weight and get your insulin under control. I believe this because I gave a copy of the plan to a friend who has followed it and has also had success. This plan is truly unique. At first glance it can seem like another low carb, high protein diet. But it is not. It's more like, low carb, moderate protein with some secret weapons :) Best wishes!

Dr. Robert Arnot is affectionately known to millions of American tv viewers as "Dr. Bob" because of his accessability given the medium. Do not use this familiarity as an excuse to belittle or undermine his scientific and/or medical integrity. This book is a concisely written, highly readable GEM. Arnot's recommendations are easy to implement, and will definitely result in improved nutritional status for women who currently "enjoy" our Standard American Diet (SAD). Your Stomach: What is Really Making You Miserable and What to Do About It (Praktikos Health) Review

Your Stomach: What is Really Making You Miserable and What to Do About It (Praktikos Health)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Waking up doctors and individuals to the importance of stomach acid and the foolishness of using antacids is well worth five stars.
Dr. Jonathan Wright is one of the top dozen or so brilliant MDs helping to educate doctors and people while providing excellent medical care for his patients. His lectures and presentations are usually full of extremely valuable information.
Unfortunately this book waffles around for the first twenty pages talking about conventional thought promoting antacids as a cure for GERD or acid reflux. It isn't until about page twenty when Dr. Wright finally starts to discuss some of the important scientific concepts (and he never gets technical). Another 19 pages convey some useful information (for the majority of people that weren't aware of this already).
As another reviewer pointed out, only 39 pages of this book is actual discussion of the topic, the rest is supporting references. I don't have a problem with this book being short (it can literally be read in just a few minutes).
I had hoped this would be a good medical reference book to add to my shelf of great books. Unfortunately there is very little solid information in this book. If you understand the basic concept that most people with stomach issues (including acid reflux) actually suffer from low stomach acid, not too much stomach acid, and you understand that consuming antacids only gives temporary relief while causing more long term issues, then there is no reason to purchase this book.
I'm truly disappointed by this book as I consider Dr. Jonathan Wright to be one of the best colleagues in our fight against incompetent medical care. (I never hesitate to refer clients to him for care.)
