Food As Medicine: How to Use Diet, Vitamins, Juices, and Herbs for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life Review

Food As Medicine: How to Use Diet, Vitamins, Juices, and Herbs for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life

"Your body has the ability to heal itself if you just give it a chance. Using food as medicine gives [you] the greatest chance of all to heal....What you eat can either prevent cancer and other chronic illnesses or help cause them....My number one recommendation is to eat a rainbow of fresh fruits and vegetables every day." Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.
FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent.
Dr. Khalsa writes a chapter about each of his seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy to help you restore balance to your body, mind and soul. They are:
1 Detoxify your body. (If fasting isn't for you, you can take two 450 mg aloe vera tablets at night or go on a monodiet.)
2 Go organic. ("The switch to organic food is vital if we are to save our environment.")
3 Limit or eliminate genetically engineered foods. (Examples include: aspartame, canola, corn, cotton, crook-necked yellow squash, dairy products, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, and tomatoes.)
4 Eat clean protein. (Buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, and venison are some non-traditional sources. I personally enjoy the latter very much. Choose chicken and fish--preferably wild salmon or other oily fish. Shark, swordfish and tuna also have potential problems with contamination--mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic. Also soy protein and definitely beans and legumes are great--they have almost no fat and are rich in fiber and good carbohydrates.)
5 Discover juicing and supplements. (I don't do this one because there is more fiber in the fruit than the juice and that is good if you want to avoid getting type 2 diabetes down the road.)
6 Cook consciously and eat mindfully. (Chew slowly, savor your food, sit down and relax and "remember that everything we eat comes from God, as do our health and healing.")
7 Make the transition to the yoga nutritional therapy diet. ("By following a plant-based diet, you will find that you have improved focus and higher productivity in your daily life.")
My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity."
Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

More Smoothies for Life: Satisfy, Energize, and Heal Your Body

I've had this book for about 2-3 weeks now and I've made a handful of good smoothies from this book and the rest of the recipes sound great...but I'd need to own a smoothie shop to be able to make half of these recipes. All of the recipes use different ingredients and the ones I want to try the most include several powders so I'd have to go out and buy dozens of different powders and juices for this book to be useful to me.
I was hoping this book wouldn't have a lot of fancy ingredients.

The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health: Unleashing the Healing Power of Whole Fruits and Vegetables Review

The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health: Unleashing the Healing Power of Whole Fruits and Vegetables

Last year at x-mas my wife and decided that since we just had a baby and funds were low, that we would buy each other one gift that we picked out around $20.00.
I picked a beard trimmer and my wife picked out the Juice Ladys book.So I thought I would be nice and buy her two Juice Ladys books.
Well the books came and I looked through them, and found to my surprise that the same recipes were printed throughout both books.
A lot of the recipes can be used for the same things. So instead of printing the recipe then putting what it can be used for the recipes are reprinted over and over.
So in retrospect I suggest buying one book instead of two or three with different titles, because they have the same recipes.
I hope this has been of some help for those looking to buy this or other Juice Lady books.

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More Review

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I suppose that this book is for people who are already into whole foods. To people who aren't accustomed to such foods might read ingredients like Lecithin granules, Asorbic Acid, Sprilla and go "What the heck is that?" But, I'm weird, and I already have all that stuff. :)
It's also for people who have a good blender (obviously) and preferably a juicer, though store bought juices are fine. You just get more health benefits from fresh juices. And I'm glad the Author does understand that not everyone has a juicer.
That being said though, I've always enjoyed making healthful and delicious juices and smoothies. But the few other books I have, mainly the juice books, the recipes are a bit too fancy for me. Not to mention expensive. Great for entertaining guests I suppose, but just for me? Nah. Smoothies, for the most part I've just made up on my own. But realizing how many calories I was consuming with them woke me up a bit. I LOVE that this book has not only very yummy smoothies, but nutritional info for each one! I also love that they are all designed for specific health needs. Losing weight, Working out, Pregnancy, Boosting Immunity, etc. It also has a section for kids. What a wonderful way to get more healthy foods in my son's belly without his knowing it because they taste so damn awesome!
I love this book. And even though, as a few have complained, there are no pictures (I always look for cook books with beautiful photos) - this is the only Smoothie Book I need.
A side note about the cost of smoothies and juicing - I think this book saves you money. It has you making ice cubes from strong teas or fresh juices to add into future smoothies. So in my freezer, I have it stocked with labeled freezer bags of Beet Juice, Watermelon Carrot Juice, Coconut Milk. Today I planned on making up some Chai Tea Ice Cubes for the Chai Smoothie later. Juicing yourself in small amounts and freezing them really cuts down on the cost of produce. You use less, and your produce doesn't spoil before you get a chance to use it all.
Even still, if I see an apple looking a little sad. I just juice it instead of throwing it away.
Apples are also a good cheap filler for juicing. Any produce on the expensive side, I juice with apples to use less of the more expensive produce. The taste isn't changed much, and it adds fiber and other nutrients.

Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Juices Review

Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Juices
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought this book as I was interested in finding out the different healing properties of various fruits and vegetables. And I was quite pleased with the setup of the book-basically the book is organized by vegetable/fruit, with each entry including the history of the subject, it's nutritional value, the different diseases,sicknesses,and/or conditions it's known to help, and ways of preparing it properly. I quickly found different juices/veggies/fruits that targeted the conditions I wanted, and I've since incorporated their juices into my routine. I"ve been quite happy with the results in particular with including the following(not all together but seperately and combined with other juices): celery, cucumber, cabbage, carrot, beet, and radish.
One thing I would like to clarify is that Heinerman seems to really encourage blender juicing, either with your own blender, or more importantly with a Vitamix, to really maintain alot of each veggie/fruit's nutritious value by including the pulp. I was very happy with this encouragement, as I own both a Vita Mix and Juiceman, and I personally think the Vita Mix is far superior. But, I do think it's important for the reader to understand that he favors blender juicing over extracted juicing-and as a result, many of his juices call for this type of juicing.

The Juice Lady's Turbo Diet: Lose ten pounds in ten days-the healthy way Review

The Juice Lady's Turbo Diet: Lose ten pounds in ten days-the healthy way
Average Reviews:

I got this book about three weeks ago, right after it came out. At the time I was considering doing one of my semi-annual juice fasts, but kind of wary because, while that used to take off a good 6 pounds or so every time, the last couple of times I did it I didn't lose anything. Depressing! The book I use for my regular juice fasting is Dr. Paavo Airola's book "How to Keep Slim, Healthy and Young with Juice Fasting" which is out of print, but you can get them used online. So after skimming through the Juice Lady's book I thought it would make a good transition diet for after the juice fast. Sure enough, after a week on the juice fast I had lost 8 pounds. Then I transitioned into Cherie's diet. That way, instead of feeling like I was giving up all the foods I loved, I felt like "Oh goody! I get to eat a real apple!" =] I have tried several of her juice recipes and they were yummy. However soaked buckwheat groats...well it ended up in the trash. Won't be doing that one again! After one week transitioning, I have not gained back a single pound (which really means I've lost some, because after a week of juice fasting there is nothing in your intestines and when you start eating again it fills up again, of course.) I am not craving sugar, salt or anything but fruits and vegetables (living foods). I went to the grocery store yesterday, looked at all that nasty processed food and couldn't make myself buy it. Did spend a lot of time in the produce department, though. =] I am not following her diet strictly, so don't know about the losing 10 pounds thing, but I am liking what I am doing right now, and will continue juicing at least once a day. I am juicing fruit, which she does not do if you are strictly on the diet.

In this book, you'll discover not only the principles behind juicing, but the recipes to help you serve up freshly made juices and delicious raw foods as part of a lifestyle to lose weight and keep it off for good. There are five main reasons why the Turbo Diet works so well:
It supplies anabundance of nutrients that satisfy the body. Cravings often diminish andvitality soars! Live foods and juicesdetoxify the body. Toxins can actually cause us to gain weight. It's true. And they can make it very difficult to lose weight. Fresh veggie juice andraw foods alkalinize the body. Actually, the body stores acids in fatcells to protect delicate tissues and organs making it tough to get rid ofthis stuff. But listen up—the body will actually make fat to store acidswhen it runs out of storage space. The Turbo Diet isenergizing. Fatigue vanishes; and our work-outs get easier.
If you're countingcalories, this program is low in those little energy units, devoid of badcarbs, and high on life-giving nutrition.

The Juice Lady's Turbo Diet serves up freshly made juices and delicious raw foods recipes as part of a lifestyle to lose weight and keep if off for good! This plan works so well because it feeds the body an abundance of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients. You can use everything! The body doesn't need to shuttle off harmful acids or toxic additives into fat cells. So voila! You're losing weight while hardly trying.

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit & Vegetable Juice Combinations Review

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit and Vegetable Juice Combinations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Allow me to be blunt--I don't buy into the whole health-craze notion that juicing is the silver bullet for ultimate physical health and spiritual awakening. I'm just a no-frills, moderately healthy woman who wants to enjoy the luxury of fresh-squeezed juices in her own kitchen without having to pay a gourmet price for them. To that end, I splurged on a good but affordable juice extractor and bought this book to learn the basics of making homemade juices. As with everything I purchase online, I checked out other customers' reviews of various juicing information and cookbooks beforehand, and Rodnitzky's book appeared to contain what I needed without too much fru-fru, "juicing will change your life" craziness.
What I found when the book arrived was that not only does Ultimate Juicing provide all the basic information one needs to make healthy and delicious juices at home, it also avoids the pitfalls of hard-sell promotional content("these recipes will work best with such-and-such brand juice extractor") and extravagant expectations for juicing's health and/or spiritual benefits. In 8 concise, sensible chapters, Rodnitzky describes the nutritional value of fresh-made juices; proper selection, preparation, and storage of produce; juicer selection (without the hard-sell: the juicers are described in terms of operation with brand names mentioned only as examples); and recipes for basic, health-boosting, exotic, and alcoholic juice drinks.
The core information and excellent variety of recipes easily offset the silliness of the recipe titles, and the comprehensive index makes the book a handy reference for everyday use in the kitchen. I would recommend this book for veteran and novice juicers alike, regardless of their physical fitness or spiritual level.

Juicing For Life Book - Cherie Calbom and Maureen Keane Review

Juicing For Life Book - Cherie Calbom and Maureen Keane
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Basic juicing questions are answered in the first section of this book, which focuses almost entirely on physical ailments. For each malady, the author gives general recommendations, dietary modifications, "nutrients that help," and beneficial juices.
At the end of the book, the author offers several dietary plans (sugar metabolism disorder, immune support, elimination diet, cleansing diets, and a basic diet). For each plan, there's a sample menu and dietary guidelines to follow. I really appreciated the inclusion of the cleansing diets because the author includes a juice fast plan. None of the other juicing books I've read bothered to make the effort to even touch upon juice fasting, which is what I was really interested in. So, I was really happy this author took the time to work it into her book.
Although this book is a good resource, I only gave it three stars because, compared to other juicing books I've read, it fell short. While it offered information for certain ailments in depth, I think it could have benefited from a section that simply featured some basic juicing recipes. A less structured format for a portion, I think, would have made this book more appealing to a wider audience.
