The Santa Fe School of Cooking Cookbook Review

This is a super introduction to the habit-forming, varied cuisine of New Mexico! The recipes are tested in the Cooking School, so you can be sure that they are workable. Since I have attended three classes at the school, it is with confidence that I recommend this book. The recipe for New Mexican Green Chile and Cabbage Soup with Sausage alone is worth the price! There is a good list of sources for Southwestern ingredients in the back. My only criticism is that I find the layout of the index to be confusing.

This book contains very elegant and health conscious recipes. Some dessert recipes are old classic European dishes, I was pleasantly surprised to find them in this book, I was very happy to come across this book.

Doctor's Book of Food Remedies Review

Doctor's Book of Food Remedies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love. More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too!
I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food. Taking ellagic acid (a cancer fighter) in a pill form doesn't work. It is essential to eat strawberries or other berries in order to obtain ellagic acid. After reading this book you will look at a stawberry pie in a new way.
"Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food." --Hippocrates, 400 B.C.
This book also gives helpful hints on how to select produce and keep it fresh. There is also some great information on how to prepare fruits and vegetables.
You will find great life saving information:
Eating cherries helps to prevent cancer, "perillyl alcohol" blocks the formation of a variety of cancers and contain a compound called quercetin. This neutralizes cancer-causing agents in the body. It also shields your DNA against cancer.
Eating red grapefruits will give you more "lycopene" which helps protect against heart disease. Ruby Red and Star Ruby are great choices.
"Diet has the distinction of being the only major determinant of health that is completely under your control." --Andrew Weil, M.D.
The recipes are easy to make and there are plenty of them. There are also plenty of great pictures to get you to the store! Blueberries anyone...

The Complete Crockery Cookbook: Create Spectacular Meals with Your Slowcooker (The Complete Crockpot Cookbook, 1) Review

The Complete Crockery Cookbook: Create Spectacular Meals with Your Slowcooker (The Complete Crockpot Cookbook, 1)

This book is very disappointing. My main complaint is that many of the recipes call for ingredients such as frozen vegetables, canned soup, mayonnaise, and one which actually calls for an entire bottle of Catalina salad dressing. This really is not my style of cooking. Another reviewer commented that a lot of recipes need something done throughout the cooking process or are partially cooked on the stove before being put into the Crockpot. This was a big turn off for me too. I suggest trying a different book.

PICNIC: 125 Recipes with 29 Seasonal Menus Review

PICNIC: 125 Recipes with 29 Seasonal Menus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, it is nigh impossible to find a decent cookbook for less than $..., but to find a great cookbook for under $... (Amazon's price), is a true discovery.
But we need to beg the question: even if it is a bargain, do you need another book just for picnics? I mean, picnics are simple, right? Chicken, potato salad, wine, salt, pepper and some napkins. Well, if you have picnic atrophy and go only once a year, then you're fine with the 'Colonel.' However, if you, by chance, plan to cultivate the cultured outdoor dining side of you, Stovel is your mentor.
Stovel breaks up the book into the four seasons, and within each season she gives multiple menus (Spring 6, Summer 12, Fall 7 and Winter 4 menus). Each menu normally has five items. For example: Stovel's, 'Spring Day-Hike Picnic' menu has: grilled chicken fillets in a spinach wrap, artichoke salad, carrot sticks, gingerbread and fruit, with herbal iced tea. Her menus are thoughtful, flavorful, and balanced by having only one or two unique items out of the five. Her recipes are easy to follow and very tasty. This is a text only, there are no photos of the plates.
I thought Picnics were fun, kinda fast, intimate (like for two) and cheap. But the recipes here are for eight people! I have never had a picnic with eight people. I have had a church gathering and a Super Bowl sporting event, but not a picnic with eight people.Perhaps Stovel comes from a large family and see her readers bringing mom, dad, grandma and the five kids along; but in today's world of virtual families, recipes for eight are an overkill. Thus, because my picnics are for two, every recipe has to be cut in half and then I still have a picnic basket of left overs.
Also, sometimes, the ingredients for these recipes doubled my weekly grocery budget. For example, the ingredients for the 'Artichoke Salad' (pg.16) set me back $16 by the time I bought three jars of marinated artichoke hearts $9, six sun-dried tomatoes [you gotta buy the whole jar] $4, mushrooms, scallions, etc. Or consider the 'Fresh Fruit Bowl Kaleidoscope' costing more than $17 not counting the Grand Marnier Liqueur' which is a heart-stopping $4, just for 50ml.
These points aired, this is a wonderful book that has recipes that can be used year round, picnic or not (Try 'Tante's Coffee Cake' and 'Currant Oat Scones' - Excellent). 'Picnic' is an excellent buy for the money. Recommended. 4 stars

Foods to Fight Cancer: Essential foods to help prevent cancer Review

Foods to Fight Cancer: Essential foods to help prevent cancer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish I had read this book many years ago, as I am now a cancer survivor. However, since I intend to do my best to prevent a recurrence, it is still extremely valuable. What one reads in this book can also be read from the reports of the major cancer conferences in the country, such as the recent San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference in December.
This book begins with one of the best explanations of cancer and how it develops in our bodies that I have ever read. (And I have read a lot!) As it continues, it then relates to how food is at least equal to, if not better, than resorting to medications. How many times have we heard to eat five servings of vegetables and fruits each day? Which of them or both is meant by that admonition? This book makes it clear which and how many, and most importantly, why. Beautifully illustrated, well written for the lay person, a valuable tool in the fight not only against cancer, but for good health!
Just a follow up note: I also purchased Recipes for Foods to Fight Cancer, a recipe book produced by the same authors with celebrity chefs producing recipes using the recommended foods. (After all, how many of us know how to fix seaweed?) However, while it is attractive and interesting, I would have preferred more simple, every day recipes, rather than gourmet recipes. Stick with Foods to Fight Cancer and you'll have all the information you need.

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults, Second Edition Review

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To make many of the recipes in this book you need to make up your own gluten-free flour mixture. There are two options. The first is a mixture of rice flour, potato starch, sorghum flour, tapioca flour, cornstarch, garbanzo bean flour and xanthan gum. Most of these items are easy to find online or at your local health food store. The second option requires you to mix together brown rice flour, sorghum flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, coconut flour, garbanzo bean flour, golden flaxseed meal, cornstarch and xanthan gum.
Once you have these flour mixtures made you can then make a number of interesting and delicious dishes. Not every recipe requires the flour mixture, some indicate which type of product to buy, like for instance: gluten-free tortillas. The author recommends you buy Frito Lay Tostitos, which are gluten free.
Here are a few of the recipes you may want to try:
Homemade Granola
Peanut Butter Smoothie
Spicy Cheese Muffins (requires 1 cup gluten-free flour)
Breakfast Enchiladas
Banana Pancakes (requires ¾ cup gluten-free flour)
Corned Beef and Cabbage
Mixed Bean Salad
Banana Biscotti
Chocolate Cherry Cake
Many of the recipes are not only gluten-free they are also dairy-free. At the start of the book there is a long list of items that contain gluten. It might be helpful to know that commercially packaged frozen hamburger patties contain wheat-based fillers. There is also a list for people who want to live dairy-free. If you are new to cooking you will also appreciate the list of kitchen hints and cooking techniques. Most of the main dishes serve 4-8.
If you don't want to make up your own flour blend, you may also be interested in:
Bob's Red Mill All-Purpose Gluten-Free Baking Flour. I've used it in a few recipes in the past and it seemed to work fairly well. It does however seem to have more bean flours than the flour recipes in this book.

The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health: Unleashing the Healing Power of Whole Fruits and Vegetables Review

The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health: Unleashing the Healing Power of Whole Fruits and Vegetables

Last year at x-mas my wife and decided that since we just had a baby and funds were low, that we would buy each other one gift that we picked out around $20.00.
I picked a beard trimmer and my wife picked out the Juice Ladys book.So I thought I would be nice and buy her two Juice Ladys books.
Well the books came and I looked through them, and found to my surprise that the same recipes were printed throughout both books.
A lot of the recipes can be used for the same things. So instead of printing the recipe then putting what it can be used for the recipes are reprinted over and over.
So in retrospect I suggest buying one book instead of two or three with different titles, because they have the same recipes.
I hope this has been of some help for those looking to buy this or other Juice Lady books.

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit & Vegetable Juice Combinations Review

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit and Vegetable Juice Combinations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Allow me to be blunt--I don't buy into the whole health-craze notion that juicing is the silver bullet for ultimate physical health and spiritual awakening. I'm just a no-frills, moderately healthy woman who wants to enjoy the luxury of fresh-squeezed juices in her own kitchen without having to pay a gourmet price for them. To that end, I splurged on a good but affordable juice extractor and bought this book to learn the basics of making homemade juices. As with everything I purchase online, I checked out other customers' reviews of various juicing information and cookbooks beforehand, and Rodnitzky's book appeared to contain what I needed without too much fru-fru, "juicing will change your life" craziness.
What I found when the book arrived was that not only does Ultimate Juicing provide all the basic information one needs to make healthy and delicious juices at home, it also avoids the pitfalls of hard-sell promotional content("these recipes will work best with such-and-such brand juice extractor") and extravagant expectations for juicing's health and/or spiritual benefits. In 8 concise, sensible chapters, Rodnitzky describes the nutritional value of fresh-made juices; proper selection, preparation, and storage of produce; juicer selection (without the hard-sell: the juicers are described in terms of operation with brand names mentioned only as examples); and recipes for basic, health-boosting, exotic, and alcoholic juice drinks.
The core information and excellent variety of recipes easily offset the silliness of the recipe titles, and the comprehensive index makes the book a handy reference for everyday use in the kitchen. I would recommend this book for veteran and novice juicers alike, regardless of their physical fitness or spiritual level.
