The Florida Keys Cookbook: Recipes and Foodways of Paradise Review

The Florida Keys Cookbook: Recipes and Foodways of Paradise
Average Reviews:

How many cookbooks do you buy, look at them once or twice and then forget about them? This cookbook is packed with genuine Florida Keys recipes including my favorite, "Chardonnay Shrimp." Since most of the recipes come from Keys restaurants, the book also acts as a restaurant guide. Interspersed with old photos and the history of the area, the book gives new meaning to "flavor of the area." A must have for those who love food and the Florida Keys.

Field Dressing and Butchering Upland Birds, Waterfowl, and Wild Turkeys Review

Field Dressing and Butchering Upland Birds, Waterfowl, and Wild Turkeys

The first thing this book has going for it, is the size, since this is a book that you can carry with you on hunting trips as a step by step guide, or how to. Not only are the instructions absolutely complete but they are easy to follow, and the equipment required is inexpensive and in some cases free.
Every legally hunted bird is covered from field dressing, preserving to cooking and recipes.
The step by step instructions include either exact illustrations and/or black and white clear photographs. It is a book that the novice should own.

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide) Review

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over 400 pages of tips, techniques, a massive section on drinks (with pictures), spirits reviews and a guide to the worlds best cocktail bars. Heavy enough to qualify as a weapon in most jurisdictions, it is solidly bound, well laid out, and printed in a large format. So unlike most drinks books, it is easy to read, nicely indexed in various ways, and can be used as a reference for years to come without falling apart.
As a repository of all cocktail knowledge and wisdom it easily surpasses the Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (long considered an industry standard manual and now in its 66th edition), in quality, depth, breadth and sheer numbers of cocktails. If you are going to buy any cocktail book, this is the one to have.

I am just learning my way around the kitchen and I've found many cookbooks that use jargon that I am not familiar with. However, this book is great because it explains the definition of certain cooking terms. I've tried several of the recipes and they came out great! The book itself is beautiful and a pleasure to scan throuch and use.

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes with Whole Grains Review

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes with Whole Grains
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I may be biased because I took Joanne's School of Natural Cookery course ten years ago to date and came to know and love this fascinating woman's approach to ingredients and their interrelationships; nonetheless, I still think this book remains a a powerful and compelling learning tool. Amazing Grains opens with the idea of learning cooking as an open process and flexible framework rather than an exercise in rote memorization. Saltzman does not reject the accepted knowledge of traditional cooking, but works through an analysis of why some cooking 'traditions' taste good and what about their ingredients allow them to combine to make delicious dishes. She returns to the basic elements of taste and instructs the reader through theory and example in how to reconstruct flavor combinations to come about one's own dishes. Even more than this, Saltzman's theories work when applied to traditional cookbooks and can be used to analyze, add to, and improve their recipes. Yes, the examples in the book seem somewhat odd at first, but when you realize that the principles used to come about these unusual recipes actually generate successful dishes, you'll become excited about the possibilities! There is a somewhat macrobiotic/American vegetarian slant to this book, hence the frequent use of seaweeds, miso, mirin (Japanese sweetened cooking rice wine), and umeboshi vinegar; however, the art of the book is all about cross-cultural, cross-palate substitutions and how to utilize them wisely. You can find lists of recipes in any other vegetarian cookbook - what this book gives you is the knowledge and power to be your own list-maker!

Fine Cooking Appetizers: 200 Recipes for Small Bites with Big Flavor Review

Fine Cooking Appetizers: 200 Recipes for Small Bites with Big Flavor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fine Cooking Appetizers / 978-1-600-85330-2
I don't entertain much, so I'm not one for cooking lots of appetizers for parties, but I do like "bite size" recipes for storing and packing into family lunches and the like. If you're looking for an appetizer cookbook, this one definitely has a lot to offer: the recipes are intuitively organized, easy to understand, and well-formatted, and most of the recipes on offer show a corresponding finished picture. The ingredients lists are well-organized, and in multi-step recipes it's always clear which ingredients are used for each step of the process.
Of the 200 recipes on offer, a lot of them are multi-ingredient dishes that are sure to impress. I suppose this is a good thing if you are looking for new things to try and don't want more of the same old obvious stuff, but I can imagine that some of these dishes might be complicated enough to put off a lot of home chefs, and may be exotic-tasting enough to put off some of the guests. There's a strong overlap of traditional comfort food, though, such as the creamy fudge (with multiple flavor variations) and the triple-shot eggnog. The pictures themselves all look absolutely delicious, and combined with the stellar formatting, this cookbook is a joy to browse through.
As an appetizer cookbook, this one really stands out for variety - among the expected savory and tart fare, there are a lot of sweet flavors as well. I think a regular entertainer would get a great deal of use out of this book. For my purposes (lunch packings and varied dinner sides), the book is slightly less useful, but I was still able to find a lot of valuable recipes here, and I do recommend this highly to others.
NOTE: This review is based on a free Advance Review Copy of this book provided through NetGalley.

The Complete Canadian Living Cookbook: 350 Inspired Recipes from Elizabeth Baird and the Kitchen Canadians Trust Most Review

The Complete Canadian Living Cookbook: 350 Inspired Recipes from Elizabeth Baird and the Kitchen Canadians Trust Most
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those who only have a basic collection of cookbooks, consider adding this up there right next the the Joy of Cooking. All these recipes are tried and true, not elaborate, and tested for good results, "Tested Til Perfect", in their test kitchen. Many are basic fare recipes but each recipe delivers an incredibly good dish. Yes, some are more tropical or ethnic in flavour. Canadian Living, with its magazine and television shows, produces & tests over 500 recipes each year. What you have here is a selection of the 350 best. However, this is not just your boring old basic Cooking 101 cookbook. There's a real focus on both regional specialties and ingredients and dishes that celebrate Canada's modern multicultural mosaic.
Re: Comments Below, If you were looking for "Canadian" recipes and didn't like the ethnic ones, then you've missed the point. Canada is as multicultural as it gets, the folks very openminded about ethnic food, so why wouldn't this cookbook have "tiramisu" or curried dishes or fusion dishes? Besides the "truly Canadian" dishes such as saskatoon berry pie would be impossible to reproduce if sasks don't grow in your area.

Slurp: Drinks and Light Fare, All Day, All Night Review

Slurp: Drinks and Light Fare, All Day, All Night
Average Reviews:

The best thing about this book is the stunning photography. It starts out with some basics talking about the various types of barware and garnishes. The book is then divided by the time of day. It gives recipe for non-alcoholic and alcoholic breakfast drinks and a couple of recipes of what would go with them food wise. It then goes on to cover lunch and dinner. The recipes are simple. There are a few recipes that I thought I might try. As far as a drink book goes, you get a lot more in an actual bar book. If all you want is just a sampling of drinks this book would be good for you.

American Bistro Review

American Bistro
Average Reviews:

"Casual, satisfying, bold, and unpretentious". That describes this book to a tee. I am a huge fan of NYC bistro dining and have been searching for a book that offers the types of dishes I know and love. Bistro cooking is hearty, warm food with bold flavors and interesting textures. American Bistro offers just that with dishes such as twice-cooked barbecued chicken, chicken pot pie w/parmesan-cheddar crust, braised short ribs and veal chops (two musts haves to see on every bistro menu!). All are simple to prepare and most come with beautiful color pictures of sample presentations. The deserts are sumptious also, but I must admit my favorite are the heath-bar chocolate chip cookies (yes, you've read correctly). These are wonderful. And, served warm from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, is a bistro desert worthy of any restaurant experience. If you like bistro-type foods or just want to try them out I recommend this book. You will be a bistro cook before you know it!

Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes Review

Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a cookbook collection that exceeds five hundred titles. Ten of my books are from Pillsbury and I have never been disappointed. When I received a card from Pillsbury announcing the newest in their collection, I immediately ordered it.
Pillsbury and the slow cooker are a great match. The recipes are easy to put together with ingredients that you probably have on hand or are readily available, and what could be easier than cooking in a slow cooker? I have already prepared several of the recipes and I am looking forward to trying more of them. The Turkey and Bacon Wild Rice Casserole was a big hit. Hearty Steak and Tater Soup brought ooh's and aah's at work too. The slow cooker is particularly good with lean cuts of beef. For this, try Beef Brisket with Cranberry Gravy or Carmelized Onion Pot Roast. Actually try them BOTH as they are scrumptious!
For readers new to using a slow cooker, Pillsbury shares ten 'secrets' for using the appliance successfully. There are five sections in the book covering main dishes, poultry, soups, stews and chiles, sandwiches and vegetables and side dishes. There are 140 recipes in total and many have illustrations. Each recipe is accompanied by Nutritional Information and a sidebar offering tips and serving suggestions.
Although a bit smaller than some of the other books in the collection, the Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes is outstanding in quality. It's a big hit in my kitchen...it will be one of your favorites as well!!

In today's fast-paced world, convenience is a key ingredient to any good recipe. With Pillsbury Doughboy Slow-Cooker Recipes—and a little bit of planning ahead—you can serve savory meals that took "hours" to cook and still have time to spend with your family. For success in your kitchen, the Pillsbury Kitchens have double-tested each recipe in various slow cookers. Check out the introduction, which is packed with helpful information, from how to adapt your favorite recipes to food safety and cooking at high altitude. And, with more than sixty mouthwatering color photographs, you can almost smell the wonderful aromas! There's a reason these are called "fix-and-forget" recipes. The recipes require minimal, easy preparation, and while you spend the day in class, at work, running errands, or driving carpool, the slow cooker does all the work. When you come home, a bubbling, fragrant, one-pot meal is ready and waiting! And the slow cooker is useful all year round—in the warmer months, this small appliance won't heat up your entire kitchen the way an oven does. You'll find chapters starting with Meaty Main Dishes, like Caramelized Onion Pot Roast, and ending with Very Easy Vegetables and Sides, like family-favorite Au Gratin Potatoes and Onion. In between are Busy-Day Chicken and Turkey, with recipes like Thai Peanut Chicken, which is great for casual entertaining; Super Soups, Stews and Chilies, including Spicy Vegetarian Chili; and Slow-Cooked Sandwiches, like So-Easy Sloppy Joes. With this much variety, you are certain to please everyone in the family. Each of the 140 easy-to-follow recipes includes a useful sidebar with a tip for serve-with items, suggestions on how the kids can help, or ideas to make it special. Set the table, whip up a fast salad or side dish, if you like, and sit down with your family to a real home-cooked meal. When a hot, hearty meal is what's needed, Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes is just the ticket!

Cocktails In Tahiti Review

Cocktails In Tahiti
Average Reviews:

My husband and I went to Tahiti for our honeymoon. I saw this book on Amazon.com and I just had to have it. The pictures, facts and drinks were amazing!
I decided to have a Tahitian party last weekend with my family and friends. I was able to recreate the Tahitian cocktails we had on our honeymoon and share some interesting facts about the islands, as well as, the hotels in the French Polynesia. The cocktails were so easy to make and they looked so festive. I was able to recreate the look of the cocktail by using the pictures in the book. Everyone at my party kept raving about how much they loved what they were drinking and wanted to see the Tahitian cocktail book. After looking at the book - they just had to have a copy. I was so excited about their requests, I can order this book on-line and have it shipped to my home just in time for Christmas. I do not have to "fight" the crowds at the mall! My party was a huge Tahitian success!
If you want to bring the French Polynesia Islands to your home and experience paradise - I highly recommend this book. Thank you for making my party festive and memorable!!!
