American Bistro Review

American Bistro
Average Reviews:

"Casual, satisfying, bold, and unpretentious". That describes this book to a tee. I am a huge fan of NYC bistro dining and have been searching for a book that offers the types of dishes I know and love. Bistro cooking is hearty, warm food with bold flavors and interesting textures. American Bistro offers just that with dishes such as twice-cooked barbecued chicken, chicken pot pie w/parmesan-cheddar crust, braised short ribs and veal chops (two musts haves to see on every bistro menu!). All are simple to prepare and most come with beautiful color pictures of sample presentations. The deserts are sumptious also, but I must admit my favorite are the heath-bar chocolate chip cookies (yes, you've read correctly). These are wonderful. And, served warm from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, is a bistro desert worthy of any restaurant experience. If you like bistro-type foods or just want to try them out I recommend this book. You will be a bistro cook before you know it!

If you love to make homemade gifts for any occasion, this is the book series to have. I got the Best of...just because I can check these out from our library but wanted one to keep on hand at all times.
The ideas are creative, some requiring much more work than I am willing to give, but you can accommodate them to your own level of investment! Anyhow, we are planning to do homemade gifts for Christmas this year, but I wanted something that wasn't just run-of-the-mill, that wouldn't wind up sitting in a drawer or, worse, in the trash! The ideas in here are great and give me a springboard for my own ideas (like I would not have thought to make homemade flavored butters and include a bag of bagels or homemade bread and then tie the gift bag with a cute little spreader knife into the bow!). Great ideas, great recipes.

My sister is a retired military wife of 30+ years. I bought this book as a gift for her. She loved it!

Click Here to see more reviews about: The Military Wives' Cookbook: 200 Years of Traditions, Recipes, and Remembrances

The Military Wives' Cookbook is a collection of recipes, anecdotal stories, and vintage photographs tracing the history and unique contributions of American military wives. Beginning with an Independence Tea Party featuring the foods served by the women of Edenton, North Carolina, at a party on October 25, 1774, it recreates the scenes and foods that recount the stories of the commitments and sacrifice that military wives have given the nation for more than two hundred years.

Presented in menu format, each chapter includes a story related to the recipes of the period ("A Colonial Thanksgiving" and "Christmas in the Confederate White House") and feature foods from around the world, including places like Morocco, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, and Korea.

The Military Wives' Cookbook is divided into six large sections:

Teas and Coffees
Buffets, Brunches, and Lunches
A Taste of Home: Dinner Family Style
Alfresco Dining
Over There: An International Affair
Home for the Holidays and Other Celebrations.

The women, through whose eyes these stories are told and whose recipes are shared, are truly remarkable. They often balanced the responsibilities of maintaining home and hearth, raising a family, managing a business, and supporting a war effort. In addition, they found time to extend themselves in friendship and hospitality to one another and to women in the places where they were stationed, earning them a well-respected reputation that continues to this day.

Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook (Betty Crocker Books) Review

Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook (Betty Crocker Books)

Excellent choice for the coming holiday season. I am especially excited about the huge section towards the back with ideas for gifts. Very creative things like fudge, candy-making, powdered drink mixes, life-saver ornaments, etc. Additionally, there's a section on crafts, like making your own garland with real dried apples as well as centerpieces with pine cones and candles. All this paired with dinner recipes, appetizers, desserts and best of all, alcoholic drinks - cran-tinis, homemade eggnog, the works. I am very excited to have this book, and for $13.57 (retail $19.99), it beats any other cookbook I've owned in the past.

The Complete Meat Cookbook Review

The Complete Meat Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everything -and I mean EVERYTHING- you need to know about meat: from where does it come from to how to carve it, this book is a complete marvel! Do not confuse it with any of those "barbecue bibles" that tell you stuff you either already know or couldn't care less (i.e. lots of no-brainer tips or cookout recipes for weekend grilling-chef dads). This is not a cookbook, this is a TREATISE (also very entertaining reading)!
This book is for experts, made by experts! It describes the animals, their meat, its flavors, textures and consistency, the cuts, their handling, the cooking techniques for each and everyone of them and, needless to say, some not-your-usual-dinner exotic international recipes that'll water your mouth (it even features "cochinita pibil"!).
Too bad it only covers beef, veal, pork and lamb! It should also include game! But ...nobody's perfect! All in all, A MUST!

Betty Crocker Celebrate: A Year-Round Guide to Holiday Food and Fun

I looked at both Celebrate by Sheila Lukins and the BC Celebrate book and I chose the Betty Crocker. It has more family type of recipes that would be appealing to both adults and children. The Lukins book is good for adults only. It had many, many recipes there's no way you'd get a kid to eat. I also like the BC one better because it had decoration suggestions, table settings, etc that were more doable and cost effective. I like both books but if you have kids you have to go with the Betty Crocker Celebrate book.

Gorgeous Christmas Review

Gorgeous Christmas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gorgeous Christmas by Annie Bell is a decidedly British book, filled with decidedly British recipes like Almond Trifle, My Grandmother's Christmas Pudding and Earl Grey Ham, but there are also many basic American dishes for the holidays along with some interesting creations by the author like Inside-Out Scotch Egg.
The book is, although a paperback, luxuriously created with beautiful photographs and a binding that will lay flat open on the counter top for ease of use. There is a picture of each prepared dish, which if in unfamiliar territory is a welcome roadmap. And, the high quality paper should provide for easy wipe-ups if anything is spilled on the pages during cooking.
I prepared three recipes without any mishaps and was quite pleased with the results. First I tried Cheese Straws an appetizer made with prepared puff pastry dough. They were savory and crispy and not at all greasy. Then I tried the Mushroom Souffle' because I was intrigued that this appetizer can be prepared, up to the point of baking, frozen and then, when needed, popped into the oven for 17-20 minutes. A soufflé is impressive on almost any occasion, and this one is no exception. I found the small bit of freshly grated nutmeg the perfect complement to the soufflé.
Finally, I prepared the Salmon en Croute. Of course salmon wrapped in puff pastry looks impressive, but what caused me to try it was the addition of finely chopped ginger in syrup. The recipe also includes fresh tarragon, lemon zest and currants. I had not prepared salmon with ginger and was curious about the taste combination but it was absolutely delicious. All of these recipes are ones I will prepare again and are certainly worthy of any holiday table.
The author strikes a balance between preparing from scratch and incorporating prepared foods. This does not mean cake mixes, it means feeling free to pick up a bakery cheesecake rather than attempting to prepare everything from scratch, and finding little to celebrate during the season except exhaustion. This is practical advice found within a well constructed cookbook of delectable recipes. Any reader looking for something different to prepare this holiday season will be pleased with the contents of this book. It is reasonably priced for a large full color book packed with lovely new tastes.

Classic Crafts and Recipes for the Holidays: Christmas with Martha Stewart Living Review

Classic Crafts and Recipes for the Holidays: Christmas with Martha Stewart Living

(More customer reviews)
Martha's Holiday book this really touched my heart. My mom has always grown Amaryllis and Christmas Cactus, chapters 4 & 5 really were a delightful surprise. I now know the Christmas Cactus the I have is called "White Christmas". When I told my mom about the charts, she was so interested in the book (she lives in Ohio and we live in Fl.) that I am immediately sending her one for Christmas. My son is a personal chef - so we all love to cook and I love to decorate. The pictures are great as usual, but I think I like the charts about the topic in each chapter. They are beautiful and informative. It was great to see the different types of pine cones and citrus. The best part is that even if you don't use these ideas during the holidays - the things you have learned will be useful all year and will be great to share with friends and family.
Some items may have been in Martha Stewart Living - that's great that the special ideas have been put in this holiday book to keep and treasure. (I don't keep every magazine - I will treasure this book). Thanks again to Martha!!!!

The Pastry Queen Christmas: Big-hearted Holiday Entertaining, Texas Style Review

The Pastry Queen Christmas: Big-hearted Holiday Entertaining, Texas Style
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Pastry Queen Christmas unabashedly offers plenty of delicious, fattening holiday fare, both traditional and unusual, and every single recipe we tried was fabulous. My only reservation, in fact, was with respect to the green bean bundles--green beans marinated in butter and spices, then wrapped in bacon and baked. The seasonings were perfect, but it seemed like the recipe would have been even better with maybe half the butter. But then I've been trying to eat more healthily lately, so perhaps I've just lost my taste for the more fatty dishes! And at any rate, now that I know it's too buttery for me, it would be easy to adjust the recipe.
The Mexican camp bread had us eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, in just about every way we could think of. The cranberry-walnut scones had a ton of flavor, and perfectly balanced the tartness of the cranberries with a bit of sweetness. An apple pear chutney was the perfect foil to fattier, richer Thanksgiving fare, and a pear salad with pomegranate and chevre was positively to-die-for!
Whether you're looking for homey fare such as savory rice balls in tomato sauce or fancy holiday specials like red velvet cupcakes with mascarpone cream cheese icing, you'll find recipes in here certain to impress friends and family alike. More importantly, they taste wonderful!
The book is a large hardcover that lies flat easily, and it includes plenty of lovely photographs. The recipes are laid out very clearly, and often include personal notes from the author. This book would make a lovely source of recipes for your own holiday feast, or the perfect holiday gift for your favorite cook.

Well, it finally was released. I was so excited to see that this book was on the way and I certainly haven't been disappointed. I just love all the decorating ideas in this book - my husband grabbed it and off he went to the store to buy the stuff it recommends. Sure was beautiful when he was done. This book makes decorating elegantly so very beautiful for the holidays, and it just gives you so many nice ideas. But, the RECIPES! Yikes! Better buy those elastic waisted pants because you'll need them after these awesome dishes. You know it's bad when you want to start with the first recipe and just make everything else afterwards. That's how it is with this book. It's really that good! You won't be disappointed with this book. I just love it!

This book has a great variety of martini recipes - I'm usually a fan of basic dirty martinis, but there are so many options for interesting drinks in here, I'm looking forward to branching out and trying them all. It's a great book to use if you're throwing a party, since there are drinks in every color, flavor, and for every season. So far I've tried the Pineapple Champagne martini, which was really good. The book also has a ton of really beautiful photos.

Thank you for a wonderful book that gives us outside of North America an opportunity to create awesome menus and by extension meals with what we have. I live in Jamaica and was inspired by each menu. It is summer but I follwed the Easter Brunch menu slavishly. I enjoyed the Wine Lovers Evening and was delighted to find a things to do with all the wine corks I have been saving.
I believe a strength of this book is the instructions which feel more like suggestions which you just fall into and you do and they make the entire evening a success. There may well be other books that do this but I would say that this book is moving to the head of my class of my over 60 cook books.

I absolutely love the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks! My favorites are the Christmas and Harvest books, I have hmmm...probably all of them. These books in general just make me feel so cozy and comfortable...actually they remind me of my Holly Hobbie days growing up!
My favorite weekend activity starting in September or so, is to wake up early, put on my robe, get my coffee, throw on a Christmas CD (Michael Buble, Let it Snow is my fav!) and browse through my Gooseberry Patch Christmas Books.
Not only are these books comforting, but the recipes are absolutely delicious! I especially love the soup/slowcooker recipes in these books. There is a broccoli cheese soup recipe and a potato soup recipe that are just to die for!
Anyway, for me these books are so nostalgic and homey, with delicious food, excellent reader's stories, and honestly useful kitchen tips...all rolled into one.
This book in particular is my favorite Christmas Gooseberry Patch, the recipes are so good, the stories are heartwarming, and this cover is my favorite! If you haven't tried the Gooseberry books yet, I highly recommend them. They also have a catalog which you can order from, I have bought the best Christmas gifts and decorations from the catalog! You can also purchase the cookbooks from the catalog/website as well. Thanks Vicky and Jo Ann! :)
