Silver Palate Cookbook 25th Anniversary Edition Review

Silver Palate Cookbook 25th Anniversary Edition

This is cookbook is as fresh and relevant today as it was when it was first published in the early 80s. It truly revolutionized home cooking in America with its emphasis on fresh ingredients and basic cooking techniques. It isn't a particularly long cookbook, but it still manages to be incredibly comprehensive. You'll find everything from elegant appetizers to comfort food desserts. Any time you're interested in trying something new or wanting to revitalize an old classic, this is the place to start. The authors went on to write other cookbooks which also contain lots of great recipes, but even "Basics" is not as comprehensive as this one. I can honestly say that I've cooked just about every recipe in this book and that each one has been a success. Not only are the recipes consistently good, but this book also makes great reading. In very practical terms the authors share truly useful tips on cooking techniques, kitchens gadgets and how to select produce. The book is particularly well organized so it's easy to find the recipe you're looking for.

The Powerfood Nutrition Plan: The Guy's Guide to Getting Stronger, Leaner, Smarter, Healthier, Better Looking, Better Sex Food Review

The Powerfood Nutrition Plan: The Guy's Guide to Getting Stronger, Leaner, Smarter, Healthier, Better Looking, Better Sex Food
Average Reviews:

I can't believe this book has such a low price. Fitness and nutrition is an area where you can easily spend a lot of money (coachs, nutritionist, gyms, special diets, equipment).
On the other side of the coin you can also spend a lot of money if you don't have a healthy lifestyle (doctors to treat diabetes, hypertension, heart disease).
Well, here is a guide that might very well save you tons of money and change your life for the better.
Just the first chapter of the book is worth its price, by far. In that chapter the author gives a general description of what an average guy would eat through out a complete day. As she describes this hypotetic guy's diet she explains what happens to your body at each stage, she explains all the mistakes we commonly make when eating.
In the second part of the first chapter she tells you what you could do instead during a complete day, she explains what you should eat, at what time, in what amounts and why.
Her explanation of the glygemic index and its relation to glucose levels opened a new world for me. I finally have come to understand why I was having terrible lows of energy during the day.
I believe those explanations would be enough to get you on the right track and start seeing results. With results I mean, more energy, less fat, better feeling in general.
She builds from there and each chapter is devoted to understanding what you need to do to achieve specific results. The last chapter is as good as the first one. It has a lot of tips on what you can do to improve your diet and how it can become part of the life of a very busy guy.
The advice in this book is thorough and most of the time she is on the right track. The only aspects I did't like was how she promoted milk, eggs, and soy. But I really don't blame her for that, since there is much controversy around dairy and soy.
There are books like The China Study that constitute a serious analysis of why certain very common foods are actually the cause for many of the health problems in the western world. So, basically when it comes to dairy and soy you should read both sides of the debate and make up your mind as what you think might be good for you.
Other than that, the book is just amazing, and I did't really mind much about her mention of dairy since she really doesn't talk too much about it.
It is clear to me that the author knows a lot about the scientific aspect of food, and some of her explanations go in that direction, still you don't feel it like a heavy read. So, I believe the tone of the book is perfect for an average guy who just wants to know what he should really eat, when, how, and in what amount.
The best book on nutrition I have seen so far!
I think if you read this one and The China Study, you will have almost all information needed to make a sound decision when thinking about your diet and your goals!
By the way there are tons of menus you can use. I really really liked that, because the books on nutrition I have seen have very poor menus or ideas to get you started.
I have to make something clear. I liked the China Study more for what it promotes than for what it forbides. According to the study you should eat tons of plants, fruits, vegetables. And even though the author of the China study promotes the elimination of animal protein from diet, he actually compromises and says if you want to eat animal protein, do it but still try to focus on eating a lot more vegetables. So, before anyone start a long debate here, I have to say I do eat dairy! Just that not in the amounts I used to! Which is by the way the advice given by the author of The Powerfood Nutrition Plan to lactose intolerant, to eat yougrth in small amounts.

Christmas in the Country Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch) Review

Christmas in the Country Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch)

I absolutely love the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks! My favorites are the Christmas and Harvest books, I have hmmm...probably all of them. These books in general just make me feel so cozy and comfortable...actually they remind me of my Holly Hobbie days growing up!
My favorite weekend activity starting in September or so, is to wake up early, put on my robe, get my coffee, throw on a Christmas CD (Michael Buble, Let it Snow is my fav!) and browse through my Gooseberry Patch Christmas Books.
Not only are these books comforting, but the recipes are absolutely delicious! I especially love the soup/slowcooker recipes in these books. There is a broccoli cheese soup recipe and a potato soup recipe that are just to die for!
Anyway, for me these books are so nostalgic and homey, with delicious food, excellent reader's stories, and honestly useful kitchen tips...all rolled into one.
This book in particular is my favorite Christmas Gooseberry Patch, the recipes are so good, the stories are heartwarming, and this cover is my favorite! If you haven't tried the Gooseberry books yet, I highly recommend them. They also have a catalog which you can order from, I have bought the best Christmas gifts and decorations from the catalog! You can also purchase the cookbooks from the catalog/website as well. Thanks Vicky and Jo Ann! :)

The New Food Processor Bible: 30th Anniversary Edition (Bible (Whitecap)) Review

The New Food Processor Bible: 30th Anniversary Edition (Bible (Whitecap))
Average Reviews:

I love this book. I love just reading it. It inspires me to use my food processor. Not only are there excellent tips, but terrific recipes I would use daily. When purchasing this book, I wasn't sure if it would be a flop and I was pleasantly surprised. One reviewer referred to the quantity of Jewish recipes. First, I didn't feel this was true and second, our family all kinds of foods: Mexican, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Russian AND Jewish. I am sure they are referring to the passover section at the end. But a lot of these recipes look very good, I would give them a try. The majority of the recipes (and there are many) are cookies, cheesecake, biscuits, marinades, appetizers, dressings, soups, etc. All from various backgrounds, that I would serve to my family DAILY. A lot of common ingredients are used and some not-so-common (but not out this world either). I was more than happy this book and would recommend it to anyone with a food processor.
August 2007 Update:
I still use this book all the time and from it's dog-eared pages and coffee stains you can see it's a favorite on my kitchen counter. One of our favorites is the egg salad recipe. I love using my food processor and I feel it was a good investment. There are so many great recipes in here that have enabled me to learn to use my food processors in so many ways and adapt old favorites of my own. A family favorite I have adapted to food processor friendly is: Chicken Enchiladas - I chop the chicken and onions for the filling and the without even needing to rinse the bowl I process the creamy sauce which is sour cream and cream of chicken soup. This is a great recipe. You can look it up at the Campbell's soup site:)
Update January 2009:
Over the past several months we remodeled our home and included my 'dream kitchen' into the project. I had to pack everything from the main level of our house into boxes and move it all into the garage. During this 'move', sadly, my copy of this book was lost. I have searched and searched but have not run across it yet. This book was a staple in my kitchen and miss it terribly. Today I am ordering another copy. Again, I say, "Money well spent!"
Update: June 2009
Again my favorite cookbook didn't let me down. I was looking for a Pizza recipe to make with the kids and this cookbook had it all starting with the recipe for the crust! We were so pleased, and it turned out fabulous!

I own several of the Gooseberry Patch recipe books, but this is one of my favorites. The Apple Butterscotch Bars are absolutely wonderful. Want to cozy up with a good book?? This is the one to read and then decide what to make first. I would recommend this one. It's a keeper!

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything (Cooking)) Review

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything (Cooking))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been dabbling here and there with a rawfood lifestyle and I bought a stack of books to get me started. By far this book is the easiest to follow, most colorful, and they have great recipes that have turned out exactly as explained. I made a great recipe out of this book which I took to two potlucks (raw and a normal meat eater) and a lot of people raved about it. From appetizers to salads, burgers, breads, meals, and desserts this is a great source. Also, one final yet critical thing I like that the authors do is tell you exactly how long and the necessary temperature to have things in the dehydrator which is a common mistake I have discovered many people make in books and on youtube - they leave it out. All in all, this book is an absolute MUST HAVE for a new raw foodie or a seasoned raw foodist. Enjoy.

My Father's Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness Review

My Father's Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family and Togetherness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this book and Cheryl Crow's If it Makes you Healthy cookbook together. If I'd picked them both up at my local Borders and thumbed through, I definitely would NOT have bought this one.
I read this one first and although there's some cute anecdotes and a few recipes that look interesting, if you have more than very basic cooking skills, you'll find yourself shaking your head a bit as you flip the pages here. Many of her 'recipes' are variations of a very simple and basic recipe and many are so basic that you really don't need a recipe at all. As an example, there's a recipe for a turkey blt...that offers nothing new and surprising, just common sense how to assemble the sandwich. So when I finished this book I was left with the overall feeling that there's not much here that isn't already obvious to most people who like to cook.
Fortunately, the opposite was true of the Cheryl Crow book, which blew me away. Page after page of creative, and mouth-watering recipes from her personal chef, that are also healthy. There's so many I can't wait to make and tonight am starting with a slow-cooked braised chicken taco recipe that is easy, healthy and looks delicious.
