The Florida Keys Cookbook: Recipes and Foodways of Paradise Review

The Florida Keys Cookbook: Recipes and Foodways of Paradise

How many cookbooks do you buy, look at them once or twice and then forget about them? This cookbook is packed with genuine Florida Keys recipes including my favorite, "Chardonnay Shrimp." Since most of the recipes come from Keys restaurants, the book also acts as a restaurant guide. Interspersed with old photos and the history of the area, the book gives new meaning to "flavor of the area." A must have for those who love food and the Florida Keys.

This is a super introduction to the habit-forming, varied cuisine of New Mexico! The recipes are tested in the Cooking School, so you can be sure that they are workable. Since I have attended three classes at the school, it is with confidence that I recommend this book. The recipe for New Mexican Green Chile and Cabbage Soup with Sausage alone is worth the price! There is a good list of sources for Southwestern ingredients in the back. My only criticism is that I find the layout of the index to be confusing.

Bon Appetit: Keep It Simple: Easy Techniques for Great Home Cooking

Over the Christmas holiday at my parents' house, I came across Bon Appetit's "Keep It Simple" cookbook. Being an avid fan of cooking and the magazine Bon Appetit, I perused the book and devoured practically every picture I saw in the book. I immediately knew I had to get a copy of my own. Unfortunately when I got back home, I wasn't able to find a copy in any of the major bookstores so I bought it here on Amazon.com. Within a couple of weeks, I have already made three of the dishes I found in this book. I particularly loved the recipe for sweet and sticky barbecue sauce. Instead of using beef ribs, I used babyback ribs which are my favorite. The sauce turned out to be great. I loved the combination of sweet and savory flavors. And last weekend, I made the oven-fried chicken. Oh! That was the best oven-fried chicken I have ever tasted. I definitely am looking forward to making more of some of the recipes I see in "Keep It Simple". What I really love about this cookbook is the easy instructions as well as the pictures showing each step for certain recipes. I think this book is excellent for novice chefs like myself. It is straight-forward and unpretentious. Well worth the money and wait for this culinary addict.

I am just learning my way around the kitchen and I've found many cookbooks that use jargon that I am not familiar with. However, this book is great because it explains the definition of certain cooking terms. I've tried several of the recipes and they came out great! The book itself is beautiful and a pleasure to scan throuch and use.

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Cheesecakes, starts with a brief introduction to the necessary equipment and utensils and the types of cheeses, pastries and borders used in the recipes, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of cheesecakes, from continental to savory cheesecakes. Special chapters are dedicated to low-fat cheesecakes (yes, there is such a thing!), medium-fat, curd, cream cheese, full-fat, no-bake, fruit, dried fruit, nut, wine, spirits, chocolate and spiced cheesecakes. Classics such as Black Forest Cheesecake, Blueberry Cheesecake, Easter Cheesecake, Lindy's Cheesecake, Manhattan Cheesecake, Old-Fashioned Cheesecake, Russian Easter Cheesecake and various strawberry cheesecakes appear next to unique creations such as Campari Cheesecake, Chocolate and Whiskey Cheesecake, Pina Colada Cheesecake, Riced-Top Cheesecake and White Chocolate and Chestnut Cheesecake.
From amaretti, apple, apricot and almond cheesecakes to Wine and Grape Cheesecake, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of creating a delicious desert from cheese, pastries and a variety of toppings - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended: This series's installments on chocolates and petits fours, crepes and omelets, ice creams and sorbets and on light desserts.

I recently purchased this "double" cookbook. It is full of the recipes I have copied from friends and relatives onto little pieces of paper and index cards...Snickerdoodles, Chocolate Sheet Cake, Chicken Fried Steak, Sombrero Dip, Layered Salad, Zucchini Casserole, etc. These are tried and true, passed around, handed down, classic recipes, all nicely bound together in an attractive country cookbook. Well worth the price to have so many useful (and well-loved) recipes in one volume (actually 2 in 1)... plus the recipes are user friendly, not requiring unusual or exotic ingredients. Helpful hints usually accompany the recipes, like go-togethers, etc. Don't pass this one up!

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes with Whole Grains Review

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes with Whole Grains
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I may be biased because I took Joanne's School of Natural Cookery course ten years ago to date and came to know and love this fascinating woman's approach to ingredients and their interrelationships; nonetheless, I still think this book remains a a powerful and compelling learning tool. Amazing Grains opens with the idea of learning cooking as an open process and flexible framework rather than an exercise in rote memorization. Saltzman does not reject the accepted knowledge of traditional cooking, but works through an analysis of why some cooking 'traditions' taste good and what about their ingredients allow them to combine to make delicious dishes. She returns to the basic elements of taste and instructs the reader through theory and example in how to reconstruct flavor combinations to come about one's own dishes. Even more than this, Saltzman's theories work when applied to traditional cookbooks and can be used to analyze, add to, and improve their recipes. Yes, the examples in the book seem somewhat odd at first, but when you realize that the principles used to come about these unusual recipes actually generate successful dishes, you'll become excited about the possibilities! There is a somewhat macrobiotic/American vegetarian slant to this book, hence the frequent use of seaweeds, miso, mirin (Japanese sweetened cooking rice wine), and umeboshi vinegar; however, the art of the book is all about cross-cultural, cross-palate substitutions and how to utilize them wisely. You can find lists of recipes in any other vegetarian cookbook - what this book gives you is the knowledge and power to be your own list-maker!

Fine Cooking Appetizers: 200 Recipes for Small Bites with Big Flavor Review

Fine Cooking Appetizers: 200 Recipes for Small Bites with Big Flavor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fine Cooking Appetizers / 978-1-600-85330-2
I don't entertain much, so I'm not one for cooking lots of appetizers for parties, but I do like "bite size" recipes for storing and packing into family lunches and the like. If you're looking for an appetizer cookbook, this one definitely has a lot to offer: the recipes are intuitively organized, easy to understand, and well-formatted, and most of the recipes on offer show a corresponding finished picture. The ingredients lists are well-organized, and in multi-step recipes it's always clear which ingredients are used for each step of the process.
Of the 200 recipes on offer, a lot of them are multi-ingredient dishes that are sure to impress. I suppose this is a good thing if you are looking for new things to try and don't want more of the same old obvious stuff, but I can imagine that some of these dishes might be complicated enough to put off a lot of home chefs, and may be exotic-tasting enough to put off some of the guests. There's a strong overlap of traditional comfort food, though, such as the creamy fudge (with multiple flavor variations) and the triple-shot eggnog. The pictures themselves all look absolutely delicious, and combined with the stellar formatting, this cookbook is a joy to browse through.
As an appetizer cookbook, this one really stands out for variety - among the expected savory and tart fare, there are a lot of sweet flavors as well. I think a regular entertainer would get a great deal of use out of this book. For my purposes (lunch packings and varied dinner sides), the book is slightly less useful, but I was still able to find a lot of valuable recipes here, and I do recommend this highly to others.
NOTE: This review is based on a free Advance Review Copy of this book provided through NetGalley.

The Complete Canadian Living Cookbook: 350 Inspired Recipes from Elizabeth Baird and the Kitchen Canadians Trust Most Review

The Complete Canadian Living Cookbook: 350 Inspired Recipes from Elizabeth Baird and the Kitchen Canadians Trust Most
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those who only have a basic collection of cookbooks, consider adding this up there right next the the Joy of Cooking. All these recipes are tried and true, not elaborate, and tested for good results, "Tested Til Perfect", in their test kitchen. Many are basic fare recipes but each recipe delivers an incredibly good dish. Yes, some are more tropical or ethnic in flavour. Canadian Living, with its magazine and television shows, produces & tests over 500 recipes each year. What you have here is a selection of the 350 best. However, this is not just your boring old basic Cooking 101 cookbook. There's a real focus on both regional specialties and ingredients and dishes that celebrate Canada's modern multicultural mosaic.
Re: Comments Below, If you were looking for "Canadian" recipes and didn't like the ethnic ones, then you've missed the point. Canada is as multicultural as it gets, the folks very openminded about ethnic food, so why wouldn't this cookbook have "tiramisu" or curried dishes or fusion dishes? Besides the "truly Canadian" dishes such as saskatoon berry pie would be impossible to reproduce if sasks don't grow in your area.

Feeding the Whole Family: Whole Foods Recipes for Babies, Young Children and Their Parents

In the 18 months I have been using this cookbook, it has always given me excellent meals and valuable cooking tips. It is the perfect cookbook for the experienced wholefood cook or for a person, especially a parent, wanting to begin experimenting with the health-sustaining wholefood diet. The author even includes at the bottom of each recipe ways to adapt the food for a 'new eater' so parents don't have to cook separate meals for each member of the family.
Also, particularly helpful is her chapter on healthy lunches, which gives great ideas for packable wholefoods - usually a daunting task in these days of take-out/fastfood. The cooking tips throughout the book and her glossary at the back include extremely helpful and often hard to find information which helps make wholefoods less intimidating and much tastier. This cookbook and Annemarie Colbin's cookbooks (The Natural Gourmet and Book of Wholemeals) are my constant kitchen references

Good Food For Good Times Review

Good Food For Good Times
Average Reviews:

After reading and looking over all the recipes in the this book they ALL look easy and wonderful. I was delighted to find a cookbook that would NOT send me running all over town for ingredients that I had never used or tasted.
All of the recipes use common ingredients so picky kids should love them. They are recipes that could very well become favorites for my family. There are 'fancy' dishes for a dinner party and dishes that are for everyday.
I am a little disappointed that the 'signature' is just a sticker with NO last name and looks like it could have been printed off. This to me does not represent a signed copy!
You will not be disappointed with this purchase unless you are only wanting a signed copy then this book is really not for you.

Of the many vegetarian recipes books I own, this is the one I return to the most. The recipes are delicious, turn out well consistently and have ingredients that I would normally have on hand. The nutritional information is listed with every recipe, which makes it easy to see at a glance, and the opening chapters are very informative about healthy eating. The recipes include enough spices to give them wonderful flavour without being too hot. A practical and inspiring book.

This book was so helpful to me as a full time working mother with a 7 year old daughter. The crafts were simple to do, yet looked like we had spent days in the making. What more could a mother want! My daughter loved making the easy decoupage christmas balls almost as much as my in-laws loved receiving them. The candy land house was our schools answer to the dreded gingerbread house (the frame is made from a six pack carboard container) I cheer the author who can put together such a well written & workable book. In closing I am off to the kitchen to whip up one of the fabulous recipes! I would say wish me luck, but I have confidence in the Snow White Bunnies being the perfect answer.
