I have been fighting excess weight all of my life, and have lost the same weight numerous times (then gained it all back, plus more). I have been on every "diet" known, I think, belonged to 3 different organizations that claimed to help me lose weight, and had finally given it all up as a lost cause, when I came upon a review for this book in my job as a librarian. Herein, if one chooses to follow them, are the most commonsense, easy-to-understand guidelines that I have ever seen--and I've read ALL of the books and tried many of their schemes. This distinctly NON-diet approach is healthy and, I am convinced, will work.

This book should get the prize for completely BAD representation of information. I am a total zone convert, it has changed my life, but if I had this book to start with, it would have hindered, NOT helped me in my path. Most of the measurements are not helpful, they are not consistent. Some are in cups, some are in ozs, some in slices, all in decimal amounts (where is my .1 cup measure?). They are in block amounts rather than serving amounts. (Is it useful to know that .8 of a 3/4 oz slice is 1 block? or is it useful to know how much 1 slice is???). Some items are in the wrong group. Ice Cream is a *protien* rather than a carb as it belongs. The foods have a decidedly east coast bent as many of the foods listed are either not available on the west coast, or common west coast brands are missing.
I was really looking forward to this book to help out friends and family members that want to start the zone. I was very disappointed. Mastering the Zone still represents the best effort by Dr. Sears, though I would hope that before he is allowed to write again, that he gets an qualified editor that can help in the presentation of ideas.

As a nearly life-long dieter and minimal exerciser, I can't tell you how impressed I am with the results I've got from using this book, compared with others I've tried. I'd followed Strong Women Stay Young (which I also highly recommend for us 50-plussers) for about 10 weeks, so maybe that gave me a head start, at least in terms of getting me into a consistent exercising regime, but the food plan in SWSS is what really got me losing weight & trimming down in size. I've lost 3 kg/6.6 pounds, gone from tight slacks/jeans in Australian size 14 (U.S. 16, I think), to where my Aussie size 12s are too big - in about 10-12 weeks. I'm rarely hungry and have stopped craving or being satisfied with junk food. The book is enjoyable to read, the authors' credentials seem impeccable, and the food plan is nutritionally sound and so wonderfully flexible that even to say I'm on a diet feels somehow dishonest. With its "no-fad," "no frills" approach, SWSS has made me really believe I'll never be fat/flabby/weak again. I reckon Dr Nelson & colleagues have given me the tools to stay slim/toned/strong for a long time to come.

Jorge Cruise has developed a quick way to "jump-start" your morning. By performing only 8 minutes of strength training and following a simple diet Jorge says you can shape up! In fact on the cover of his book he guarantees weight loss in just 4 weeks.
I think the strength training aspect of his program is very good. The photographs are clear and the descriptions for the exercises are concise. Jorge leads you through 4 sets of 12 repetitions for 2 exercises, alternating them for greater effect.
There are a number of exercises including standing heel raises, kickups, knee pushups, and one arm curls.
Despite the short time period, I could feel a nice difference in my body in under a week. Though its easy to not exercise, its hard to make excuses when it's only 8 minutes! Great Concept!
It would be nice if Jorge had included modifications for those who had difficulty performing the exercises.
Jorge also includes a motivational thought for the day. Each day has a different idea to hopefully "kick" you into high gear. Ideas such as visualization, using light, rewards etc. Nothing new, but a nice addition to the book.
The diet is your standard low calorie type fare, with one addition. Jorge has you add one tsp. of flax oil (which you can also purchase from him) or olive oil to your meals to give you that feeling of satiation. I purchased Jorge's flax oil and indeed it does make you feel full..but I found the taste was very hard to get used to. Overall, I was disappointed in the diet. Jorge does not use the new information about how glycemic levels can be effected by certain foods and he suggests foods that easily turn to sugar in your body like bananas. He also suggests eating treats alone and that could trigger cravings in some folks if not paired with a protein.
Jorge says he has trained over 3 million people online in his book. So I was surprised when I visited his website that it seemed like it was still in it's infancy ie chat board just starting etc. I have been on a variety of fitness websites for over 5 years and have never heard of Jorge. I was also disappointed when he suggested on the board the if we needed motivation we buy a small outfit and try to diet to get in it.
Personally, I think we all need to feel good NOW about our bodies and try to make them better by buying clothes that fit and adjusting down when the time is right.
My thoughts are that he knows his exercise but put together a diet program by gathering information from others. I don't think his diet program is anything special or the answer folks have been looking for.
But the book is worth the price for the exercises alone. And Jorge is young and enthusiastic and his knowledge of nutrition will grow! Hopefully his next book will include the wonderful exercises and a better nutrition plan.

This may shock a lot of people who think the key to getting good-looking arms is all about the gym, but that's where JJ Virgin is different. She knows a healthy diet is essential and it's not just any old diet either.
Once you get started on your plan, one of the first things you do is "Clean Out Your Kitchen." Gone are the starchy, sweet, and processed carbohydrates that are dooming you to a lifetime of flabby arms. She also encourages you to dump the so-called "healthy" foods that are chock full of sugar like yogurt with fruit in the bottom, microwave popcorn, those gimmicky 100-calorie packs, fruit juices, and "light" salad dressings. JJ gives you a reality check that taking the fat away from anything just to make it healthier is in fact doing just the opposite because they're packing that product up with more sugar in the process. While most of the "experts" in health are encouraging people to eat more carbohydrates and less fat, JJ Virgin knows this is pure nonsense if you want to be successful. Get rid of the sugar, ditch the vegetable oils, chunk the processed, pre-packaged foods, forget about orange juice, no more artificial sweeteners, say no to peanuts, give up white potatoes and mashed potatoes, stop eating grain-fed meats, kick the margarine habit...the list goes on and on. I can't believe this book has such a low price. Fitness and nutrition is an area where you can easily spend a lot of money (coachs, nutritionist, gyms, special diets, equipment).
On the other side of the coin you can also spend a lot of money if you don't have a healthy lifestyle (doctors to treat diabetes, hypertension, heart disease).
Well, here is a guide that might very well save you tons of money and change your life for the better.
Just the first chapter of the book is worth its price, by far. In that chapter the author gives a general description of what an average guy would eat through out a complete day. As she describes this hypotetic guy's diet she explains what happens to your body at each stage, she explains all the mistakes we commonly make when eating.
In the second part of the first chapter she tells you what you could do instead during a complete day, she explains what you should eat, at what time, in what amounts and why.
Her explanation of the glygemic index and its relation to glucose levels opened a new world for me. I finally have come to understand why I was having terrible lows of energy during the day.
I believe those explanations would be enough to get you on the right track and start seeing results. With results I mean, more energy, less fat, better feeling in general.
She builds from there and each chapter is devoted to understanding what you need to do to achieve specific results. The last chapter is as good as the first one. It has a lot of tips on what you can do to improve your diet and how it can become part of the life of a very busy guy.
The advice in this book is thorough and most of the time she is on the right track. The only aspects I did't like was how she promoted milk, eggs, and soy. But I really don't blame her for that, since there is much controversy around dairy and soy.
There are books like The China Study that constitute a serious analysis of why certain very common foods are actually the cause for many of the health problems in the western world. So, basically when it comes to dairy and soy you should read both sides of the debate and make up your mind as what you think might be good for you.
Other than that, the book is just amazing, and I did't really mind much about her mention of dairy since she really doesn't talk too much about it.
It is clear to me that the author knows a lot about the scientific aspect of food, and some of her explanations go in that direction, still you don't feel it like a heavy read. So, I believe the tone of the book is perfect for an average guy who just wants to know what he should really eat, when, how, and in what amount.
The best book on nutrition I have seen so far!
I think if you read this one and The China Study, you will have almost all information needed to make a sound decision when thinking about your diet and your goals!
By the way there are tons of menus you can use. I really really liked that, because the books on nutrition I have seen have very poor menus or ideas to get you started.
I have to make something clear. I liked the China Study more for what it promotes than for what it forbides. According to the study you should eat tons of plants, fruits, vegetables. And even though the author of the China study promotes the elimination of animal protein from diet, he actually compromises and says if you want to eat animal protein, do it but still try to focus on eating a lot more vegetables. So, before anyone start a long debate here, I have to say I do eat dairy! Just that not in the amounts I used to! Which is by the way the advice given by the author of The Powerfood Nutrition Plan to lactose intolerant, to eat yougrth in small amounts.

Easy to read, easy to follow and for the first time a diet EASY TO DO! South Beach wanted a week of eating turkey and V8 basically, you'll be craving carbs like crazy on Adkins OR you can eat like a regular person on the Belly Off! Diet. I thought this book was well written and had solid nutrition advice for both men and women (although it's geared towards men). Probably nothing really knew if you're a fitness fanatic like me.
I found the exercise section lacking. If you're looking for exercises to get rid of belly fat, my spouse and I have gotten awesome (each of us losing over 2 inches from our abs) results from this book The 5-Second Flat Belly Secret - Lose 2-3 Inches from Your Belly in Less Than 1 Month It's geared towards women, but works just the same for men.
If you're an advanced bodybuilder type who's familiar with dieting, pass on this book. But if you're an average everyday person, buy this book because it would definitely help with your diet.

In short, just a very fun and informative book with several worthy goals. For one, it educates your average person in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through frequent quizzes, trivia, facts, and interesting pictures- for instance the authors use a lot of elf cartoon. Corny, but fun.
Additionally, the book also gives one many helpful tips on how to keep their body running smoother and it is a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many- especially middle-agers like me who want to learn more about how their bodies work so they can keep it running smoothly in the years to come. Aged readers may also be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff to keep the shoulder working well- 54% of people over the age of 60 have a torn rotator cuff.
Note: People who have read the first "You The Owner's Manual" will notice additional information on the liver and pancreas, as well as a new workout chapter.

I have never been a "protein shake" guy considering my lack of affinity for milk AND chocolate. I just hate that full and bloated feeling that many of the MRPs and whey-protein-blend based protein shakes give. For one who has tried quite a few brands of whey concentrates and isolates (ON, Optimum, EAS etc.), this is quite a pleasant change. The label reads "Bottled Detonation" and for a post workout drink, thats exactly what it is! I have always been a fan of Isopure Zero Carb anyways!
For starters, it just doesn't feel like you are having a protein drink. It feels more like u r having a fruit punch. It just slides down ur throat and for the past couple of days, I have been having it with breakfast just like u have orange (or any other) juice. I have tried alpine punch and apple melon flavors till now and both are really good. There are plenty of those milk-based protein shakes around but these are rare. These must be made for me!

At the age of 75, I have some trouble with my knees. My doctor recommended glucosoamine. You can get it in varous combinations. I take these in the morning, and a regular straigt glucosamine capsule in the evenings. I do notice an improvement standing up, etc. Whether it will help you depends on your underlying problem. It will not help a blown out knee from an injury. It is not a magic bullet and takes a while to work.
I am surprised by the review reporting an upset stomache as I have had no such problem. Perhaps the person should consult with his/her doctor. The capsules are shaped for easy swallowing, and that is also not a porblem for me.
