Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone
Average Reviews:

This book should get the prize for completely BAD representation of information. I am a total zone convert, it has changed my life, but if I had this book to start with, it would have hindered, NOT helped me in my path. Most of the measurements are not helpful, they are not consistent. Some are in cups, some are in ozs, some in slices, all in decimal amounts (where is my .1 cup measure?). They are in block amounts rather than serving amounts. (Is it useful to know that .8 of a 3/4 oz slice is 1 block? or is it useful to know how much 1 slice is???). Some items are in the wrong group. Ice Cream is a *protien* rather than a carb as it belongs. The foods have a decidedly east coast bent as many of the foods listed are either not available on the west coast, or common west coast brands are missing.
I was really looking forward to this book to help out friends and family members that want to start the zone. I was very disappointed. Mastering the Zone still represents the best effort by Dr. Sears, though I would hope that before he is allowed to write again, that he gets an qualified editor that can help in the presentation of ideas.

I have only been on this diet for two weeks and have lost four pounds! As a health care professional, I know quite a bit about nutrition...yet always managed to fall for the diets that greatly limit carbs. This diet is different. While it took a little bit of getting used to cooking again, now that I am into the swing of things a little preplanning the night before allows me to stick with it! I am finding that I want to stick with it for several reasons...first and foremost - the food is delicious! I am feeling like I'm on a gourmet adventure every day! Foods that I would never have thought I would like are great! I have yet to try a single dessert - there is simply no room for more after dinner. I'm finding that cravings are gone, and I am never hungry! I can see myself changing my eating habits for the long haul!

Strong Women Stay Slim Review

Strong Women Stay Slim

As a nearly life-long dieter and minimal exerciser, I can't tell you how impressed I am with the results I've got from using this book, compared with others I've tried. I'd followed Strong Women Stay Young (which I also highly recommend for us 50-plussers) for about 10 weeks, so maybe that gave me a head start, at least in terms of getting me into a consistent exercising regime, but the food plan in SWSS is what really got me losing weight & trimming down in size. I've lost 3 kg/6.6 pounds, gone from tight slacks/jeans in Australian size 14 (U.S. 16, I think), to where my Aussie size 12s are too big - in about 10-12 weeks. I'm rarely hungry and have stopped craving or being satisfied with junk food. The book is enjoyable to read, the authors' credentials seem impeccable, and the food plan is nutritionally sound and so wonderfully flexible that even to say I'm on a diet feels somehow dishonest. With its "no-fad," "no frills" approach, SWSS has made me really believe I'll never be fat/flabby/weak again. I reckon Dr Nelson & colleagues have given me the tools to stay slim/toned/strong for a long time to come.

The O2 Diet: The Cutting Edge Antioxidant-Based Program That Will Make You Healthy, Thin, and Beautiful Review

The O2 Diet: The Cutting Edge Antioxidant-Based Program That Will Make You Healthy, Thin, and Beautiful
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was going to wait to write my review on this diet until I'd been on it for a couple of weeks, but a reviewer made an interesting observation, pointing out that all of the current 5 star reviews seem fake (it's the only non-five star review so far), and now I'm wondering if Rodale employees really have nothing better to do. But I suppose that's not the point...
I have been on this diet for 6 days so far. This book starts you out with a 4-day "cleanse." No lemon water and pepper here, folks; you actually get real food for this one. She lays out a very strict meal plan - the same breakfast every day, same snacks everyday, and so on. Also, you're supposed to drink 8 oz of lemon juice mixed into 8 glasses of water everyday. I would HIGHLY advise investing in some sort of juicer. When I bought 21 lemons at the grocery store for my first week on this diet, the cashier looked at me like she knew what I was up to... Oh, she knew.
After four days, you won't want to look at another romaine salad, cinnamon-loaded granny smith apple, or basil eggs ever again. But then you step on the scale. I'll admit that I was a bit lazy about the exercise on these 4 days, and I only started out slightly above 150 lbs to begin with (I'm 5'6", btw), but I still lost 5.2 lbs during this time. Granted, a good chunk of that was probably water weight, but it's still quite motivating. I'll be happy to update my review as I progress along on this diet.
So even as "Wary," the above referenced reviewer, pointed out, this is probably a pretty average diet as diet books go. However, I think it's kind of neat to count antioxidants and strive for a large number (30,000 a day!) as opposed to sitting around thinking about how you only have 100 calories or 1 point or whatever left for the day. I have a lot more energy, my skin is clearing up, and I'm a lot less moody with my husband - All side effects I wasn't even expecting with this diet. And trust me, after those grueling first four days, it's well worth it.
UPDATE - 01/20/2010: I've done the 4-day cleanse plus 2 weeks on this diet now. As I said before, I lost 5.2 pounds during the cleanse. After the first full week after that, I lost an additional pound. I was SUPER lazy about the exercise though. (That means I didn't do it. *blushes*) After my second week, I lost an additional 1.2 pounds, and I actually did work out a few days this week using Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred, but I also went out to eat with my husband one night. I did try my best to find the healthiest thing on the menu, though! I'm sitting at 7.4 pounds total lost, and I am feeling pretty happy with that. I feel this is a lifestyle I could maintain long after my weight loss goals have been reached.

The Fat Flush Cookbook (Gittleman) Review

The Fat Flush Cookbook (Gittleman)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started the Fat Flush Diet Plan less than 30 days ago and am happy to report a weight loss of 27lbs. in that short time frame! This cookbook is essential if you wish to follow the Fat Flush Plan! This diet is not totally easy if you really value the addition of salt or butter, but really effective! Flax oil is a primary ingredient and I believe it does promote weight loss in addition to many other health benefits, but it is not at all tasty, in my opinion. Try the mock mashed potatoes, using a cauliflower puree and several of the breakfast suggestions (eggs are vital to success), plus the smoothie recipes and you will lose weight and (most importantly, inches) in a short period of time! This book contains many delicious and health smart recipes, using ingredients you may previously have discounted, and the diet plan works. After a month on the plan, I craved salt on my entrees more than anything else, but I did lose a great deal of weight and inches and truly recommend the diet plan and cookbook to anyone committed to real weight loss and helpful insights to healthy eating.

Fit for My King: His Princess 30-Day Diet Plan and Devotional

The subtitle of Fit for My King is His Princess 30-Day Diet Plan and Devotional. That is not entirely accurate because this book is so much more than a diet plan. This book is a plan for living a healthy life, not just physically, but mentally as well. I absolutely love this book and I admire Sheri Rose Shepherd for openly and honestly sharing her struggles and triumphs to help her readers live a healthy life.
Each daily devotional deals with a real-life topic that we can all apply to our lives right now. There is also a prayer and a Bible verse. I really like the "His Princess in Action" at the end of each devotional. It always gave me a lot to think about and a way to put in practice what I just read.
Fit for My King is a book that can help a lot of women who are dealing the self esteem issues, body image issues and other issues regarding not feeling good enough for God. This book has reassured me that I am good enough for God and that I am indeed His princess. What a comfort it is to know that. I know that Sheri Rose Shepherd has had a lot of difficulties and struggles and I thank her so much for sharing those struggles and helping other women. I highly recommend this book to help you with your health and fitness journey.

8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed Up to 2 Pounds a Week -- Guaranteed Review

8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed Up to 2 Pounds a Week -- Guaranteed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jorge Cruise has developed a quick way to "jump-start" your morning. By performing only 8 minutes of strength training and following a simple diet Jorge says you can shape up! In fact on the cover of his book he guarantees weight loss in just 4 weeks.
I think the strength training aspect of his program is very good. The photographs are clear and the descriptions for the exercises are concise. Jorge leads you through 4 sets of 12 repetitions for 2 exercises, alternating them for greater effect.
There are a number of exercises including standing heel raises, kickups, knee pushups, and one arm curls.
Despite the short time period, I could feel a nice difference in my body in under a week. Though its easy to not exercise, its hard to make excuses when it's only 8 minutes! Great Concept!
It would be nice if Jorge had included modifications for those who had difficulty performing the exercises.
Jorge also includes a motivational thought for the day. Each day has a different idea to hopefully "kick" you into high gear. Ideas such as visualization, using light, rewards etc. Nothing new, but a nice addition to the book.
The diet is your standard low calorie type fare, with one addition. Jorge has you add one tsp. of flax oil (which you can also purchase from him) or olive oil to your meals to give you that feeling of satiation. I purchased Jorge's flax oil and indeed it does make you feel full..but I found the taste was very hard to get used to. Overall, I was disappointed in the diet. Jorge does not use the new information about how glycemic levels can be effected by certain foods and he suggests foods that easily turn to sugar in your body like bananas. He also suggests eating treats alone and that could trigger cravings in some folks if not paired with a protein.
Jorge says he has trained over 3 million people online in his book. So I was surprised when I visited his website that it seemed like it was still in it's infancy ie chat board just starting etc. I have been on a variety of fitness websites for over 5 years and have never heard of Jorge. I was also disappointed when he suggested on the board the if we needed motivation we buy a small outfit and try to diet to get in it.
Personally, I think we all need to feel good NOW about our bodies and try to make them better by buying clothes that fit and adjusting down when the time is right.
My thoughts are that he knows his exercise but put together a diet program by gathering information from others. I don't think his diet program is anything special or the answer folks have been looking for.
But the book is worth the price for the exercises alone. And Jorge is young and enthusiastic and his knowledge of nutrition will grow! Hopefully his next book will include the wonderful exercises and a better nutrition plan.

Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting Review

Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I felt very conflicted by this book. A lot of the advice was the sound advice that you've already read in all those women's magazine and seen on TV. You know, things like "calories in need to equal calories out", and try to eat a balanced diet, etc. Then the rest of the book teaches you neurotic, eating disordered behaviors.
Bethenny talks about how you shouldn't have to settle for a filling, healthy meal, when what you really want is a steak. Go ahead and order the steak, BUT you can only have 3 bites. Yep, 3 bites, she repeats that over and over again through the book. I don't know how you're supposed to live off of 3 bites. I can just imagine how concerned my friends and family would be if they saw me ordering food and then only have 3 bites. So what do you do with the rest of your food? You either A) throw it away B) pawn it off on your dinner companions or C) take it home and make your kids eat it. Frankly, I know a woman like this and I dread being around her whenever food is involved. She's constantly trying to pass off her food on everyone, including drinks (which Bethenny recommends). It's one thing if I'm like, "wow, that looks good", but I've never shown any interest in her meal. If I wanted to eat it, I would have ordered it! Then, if she does try to get some bland healthy meal, she stares at what I ordered, and begs for some. It's rude, annoying, and I hate going out to eat with her.
Next, Bethenny talks alot how when you're on a "diet" you act neurotic about food and obsess. Then she gives tips like, never eat a whole bagel, take half a bagel and then pull the bread out of it and eat only the crust. Same goes for english muffins. It also annoys me that she says repeatedly that she learned these eating habits from living in Italy. I'm a thin Italian woman and I EAT food.
Well, I guess if you ever wondered how these celebrities stay so thin, this book is the harsh reality. She gives a list of what she ate for 3 weeks as an example of how she lives. Here's one of the days: breakfast was 1/2 cup of coffee (couldn't possibly drink a whole cup!) and half of a egg white veggie omelet. Lunch was miso soup, glass of chardonnay, 2 prawns, and arugula salad with mushrooms. Dinner was a medium greek salad, a "skinnygirl" margarita, a couple chips with a small scoop of guacamole and roasted vegetables. Snack was a small handful of blueberry granola and almonds. I added that up to about 778 calories, and it's probably less than that since she never actually finishes food. Keep in mind she also exercises quite a bit.
While some of the advice in this book is solid, like "sit down to eat, eat slowly", the rest is actually quite unhealthy and eating disordered. Maybe Bethenny is confusing "naturally thin girls" with anorexics.

The F-Factor Diet: Discover the Secret to Permanent Weight Loss Review

The F-Factor Diet: Discover the Secret to Permanent Weight Loss
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
INITIAL REVIEW
As I read this book I couldn't help thinking how similar it is to the Zone diet. Low refined carbs, high fiber, lean protein, and a small amount of healthy fats. The only thing that's different is that you are aiming for about 35 grams of fiber per day; the Zone doesn't stress fiber as much, although it does clearly say that the more fiber, the better, because it fills you up.
So...I am now on day 2 of the 2-week introduction phase of the diet, and I'm not dying...yet. I don't feel too deprived on this diet because the foods you eat really are quite filling. I also like that after the first 2 weeks, there are no forbidden foods...you just have to eat appropriate portions since what you can eat is limited to a certain # of servings.
I had to buy a case of the GG Crackers online, because I can't find any stores here that sell them (and I'm in Seattle!!!). The crackers are definitely 100% fiber, and they taste like it. I've found that as I get more creative with how I use them, it gets easier. For instance, they're great with peanut butter. I also like them with light cream cheese and lox, or light cream cheese and cucumbers w/ cracked pepper.
So, basically it's a diet. If you're an absolute foodie like myself, you will feel limited, despite the author's claims. The notion that "you don't take away foods, you just add more fiber" is a little misleading, because you have to cut way down on processed carbs. However, processed carbs aren't off limits, you just really can't enjoy that chicken pot pie like you used to.
Overall, it's a sound diet. It describes the way humans are probably meant to eat. It's healthy, there are a million benefits to eating enough fiber, and you definitely feel less weighed down on it. However...the fun factor goes right out the window. I mean, seriously...have you ever seen a Nutritionist who looks like he/she has any FUN when he/she eats?
ADDITION TO ORIGINAL REVIEW, 7 weeks later:
I don't know if it's due to the diet, or due to me finally being enlightened about my relationship with food, but I have definitely been able to integrate the concept of more fiber/less refined carbs into the way I just live. After the first two strict weeks, I have definitely relaxed some of the "rules" (I mean, sometimes you need a slice of pizza) and found that I'm successful at 1) Not feeling guilty when I do indulge, or feeling like I've "failed" and 2) Being able to continue the diet without feeling that since I've gone off course, there's no longer hope. My main mantra is that if I follow the diet (which I now consider to be a lifestyle) 90% of the time, then I will benefit from it 90% of the time (I believe Dr. Sears of the Zone had a similar philosophy). There is no danger of going "out of the Zone", or getting "out of ketosis" i.e. Atkins. There is no physical state that you "must maintain" in order for the diet to work. You just pick up where you left off.
So...some things I've experienced while on this diet, and again--I can't claim that it's 100% due to the diet, or if it's because I am now finally "ready" to accept that living a healthy lifestyle means ADOPTING healthy habits--are below. I do believe this fiber diet has been a great initiation to a better lifestyle:
1. I have lost about 10 pounds in the last 7 weeks. This doesn't seem like a lot, but it has been gradual and I've accepted this as the way I will eat for life, not a crash diet. Also, I have NOT increased my exercise during this time. I'm o.k. with slow progress if it means I'll be able to do this for a lifetime and never have to diet again. I am slowly working more physical activity into my lifestyle. I feel much better, clothes fit better, and I carry myself with the confidence I had when I was in my 20's and weighed much less.
2. I was taking a proton pump inhibitor for my chronic heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. I was able to stop taking this medication after week one because I no longer have the above symptoms, and really believe that I won't need to take it ever again. I'm relieved for this because of recent evidence that suggests PPIs inhibit calcium absorption and therefore may lead to less bone density (particularly in the hip) and higher risk for bone breakage as I age.
3. My hunger is under control. I have learned how to be satisfied without being "stuffed" when I eat, and I am happier with smaller meals, thus fewer calories. I do not feel the low blood sugar crash when I get hungry between meals (meaning that I am not a crazed maniac if I cannot immediately eat), and I am much more aware of what I'm eating because of it. If I eat a really large lunch, I can easily eat a much smaller dinner and be perfectly satisfied. I no longer have cravings for junk, and believe me: I used to LOVE the junk.
RECIPES AND STUFF THAT'S WORKED FOR ME:
One thing that has been a great addition to this diet are Mama Lupe's low-carb tortillas (60 calories, 3 grams fat, 7 grams carb, 4 grams fiber in each 10-inch tortilla). They are the best tasting low-carb tortillas I've ever had, and I've tried many. I have not found them in stores, but order them online. I'll make quesadillas with fresh homemade salsa, use them for wraps with lunch meats, cheese and plenty of fresh veggies, or use them as I would normal tortillas when I cook Mexican food.
As for the GG crackers, some great success I've had:
1. With peanut butter and apple slices
2. With dijonaisse, lunch meat and low-fat cheese and pickles
3. As pizza crust: line them up on the bottom of a baking sheet, add your favorite tomato topping (or make your own by simmering fresh diced tomatoes, plenty of garlic, oregano and salt to taste), add the italian cheese blend you can find in the bags already shredded, and top with chicken italian sausage that you've taken out of the casings and cooked in a skillet (may need a bit of olive oil since the good chicken sausage is low-fat). Throw the whole thing in a 375-degree oven for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and getting to be golden. The crackers soften up a bit, but hold up to the firmness needed to hold the toppings.
4. I've been adding a tablespoon of ground Flax Meal (you can find it at health food stores, or online) to my morning yogurt for an added boost of fiber, plus the great benefits of heart-healthy omega-3's.
Flax has a wonderful, nutty taste and adds great texture.
5. I make a home-made Chinese Chicken Salad with cabbage, shredded carrots, diced chicken or turkey breast, sesame seeds and whatever sesame dressing (I like Girard's Chinese Chicken Salad dressing--it's fairly high fat but I consider it my daily indulgence--the glass triangular bottle). Then, instead of the high-fat fried chow mein noodles, I'll add 1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal for crunch. The salad still tastes great, and packs a nice fiber punch.
6. I have been very dedicated to preparing meals and setting aside "leftovers" or putting something together for lunch the next day at work. Because of this, my lunches are healthy and support my diet, and I save money because I don't eat out every day like I used to. Best of luck--if this diet resonates with you and you can work with it as a lifestyle change, I have no doubts that you will benefit from all the great things FIBER can do for you!

Updated recipes with 9 or fewer ingredients and less reliability on fat-free, chemical-laden frankenfoods. (Although there are some!)
The entire meal takes less than 30 minutes--the whole menu complete on one page. Calorie count and other nutritional information provided for each recipe/menu including identifying menus higher in fiber, vitamins A & C, and calcium.
I made the Creamy Pumpkin Pie dip for our dance troupe hafla and it was a big hit! Nothing to take home.
She doesn't provide grocery lists. That will depend on what menus you choose. But, she does offer a brief nutritional introduction (just enough to keep your eyes from glazing over)and suggestions for what to do with leftovers. I'm all about freezing extra portions for later so I don't mind a recipe that serves 4-6.
Those who've read some of my other review will note that I'm a BIG fan of mix and match diet cookbooks. If I was going to buy a companion volume, I'd choose The All-Natural Diabetes Cookbook

The Fat Flush Foods : The World's Best Foods, Seasonings, and Supplements to Flush the Fat From Every Body Review

The Fat Flush Foods : The World's Best Foods, Seasonings, and Supplements to Flush the Fat From Every Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ANN LOUISE GITTLEMAN, M.S., C.N.S, has written several books on nutrition
and diet. All are good....but BIG! For my money, all you really need
is this slim volume of 151 pages. No receipies are in it, (that's for the
other books...and if you want receipies, I do suggest you buy these other
books as well.) But if all you wnat is information -- LOTS of easily
understood, vital and important information, on the most important 50
"superfoods", (and prefer to get your receipes from other sources)...THIS
IS YOUR BOOK! (Just as it is mine!)
Foods are listed logically, under each chapter. The eight chapters are:
Fat Flushing, (F.F.) Staples; F.F. Proteins; F.F. Vegetables; F.F. Fruits F.F. Herbs and Spices; Surprising F.F. Foods; and F.F. on a Budget. Also included are un-numbered chapters, (an appendix, though not named as such), in which are chapters on "General Fat Flush Support and Resources",
"References and Notes", and an (annotated) index.
Each food is first listed as having one (or more) of five fat-flushing
qualities. These are listed as "Energiser", "Blood Sugar Stablizer", "Cholesterol Zapper", "Thermogenic", and "Detoxifier". No food, herb or spice has all five -- but two of the listed foods have four.
It is very easy to make a chart of just the various virtues of each food or herb or spice -- but this book contains so much more info!
After listing each recommended edible's virtues, a short history of each food/herb/spice is given, along with a listing of all the varieties, and what this food/herb/spice has been used for, (such as cancer-prevention, cutting heart-attack risk), etc. Studies and hospitals are named. Then a "Recommended Use" is given. (Apples: An Apple A Day)! A "Just The Facts" section follows, listing one or more interesting facts on the edible being discussed. (For instance: "The Average American Eats About
120 apples a year--a far cry from an apple a day!") A "Boost The Benefits" section follows, listing a few ways to do just this, (For instance: "In the northern hemisphere, apple season begins at the end of summer and lasts until early winter. When you buy apples at other times of the year, they have been imported from the southern hemisphere". Following this is a "Be A Fat Flush Cook" section, containing hints on better cooking for each edible mentioned. In the apple section, one hint (out of 4) is: "The tarter the apple, the better it maintains texture during cooking." A "Think Twice" section follows, with admonitions such as "Commercially raised apples may have been exposed to as many as ten pesticides. You can avoid consuming these pesticides by removing the skin, but you will be sacrificing both fiber and flavinoids. Your other choices are to purchase organically grown apples, or to wash your apples in a Clorox bath, (See page 136).
Lastly, each chapter ends with a "It's Been Said" section, listing pithy and clever quotes, by both ordinary and well-known people. The two listed for "apples" are:
" I was looking for a fat-flushing alternative to sweet deserts, so I sliced an apple and shook the pieces in a plastic bag with a tablespoon of ground flaxseed and half-a-teaspoon of cinnamin.
Having this treat in the evening has helped me stick to the Fat Flush Plan -- and lose 25 pounds!" -- Sandy M, Callifornia

" Comfort me with apples, for I am sick. " -- King Solomon
The "Fat Flushing on a Budget" Chapter guves many money-saving tips for
following the fat-flush plan. "Fat Flush Resources" gives websites and addresses for futher help, as well as listing Ms. Gittleman's other (excellent!) books. The "References and Notes" section, as well as the
"Index" section are detailed and easy to reference.
All in all, a LOT of book in very few pages. I, for one, highly recommend it!

The Glycemic-Load Diet: A powerful new program for losing weight and reversing insulin resistance Review

The Glycemic-Load Diet: A powerful new program for losing weight and reversing insulin resistance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have spent a lot of time reading and researching low carb diets. While this does not make me an expert, I have learned a lot over the years. I've studied Atkins, South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, Protein Power, and others. I've posted hundreds of messages upon bulliten boards discussing the best way to eat healthy, exercise and lose weight.
Rob Thompson's Glycemic Load Diet book takes the most effective parts of the various low carb and low starch diets and puts it together in a clear and concise manner. This book does not necessarily define a diet as it does describe a way of eating that is easy to follow and effective for weight loss.
The Glycemic Index ranks foods by their effects upon your blood sugar. However it is only the glycemic load that takes into account the serving size when measuring the effects of foods on our bodies. Rob Thompson's book explains the importance of glycemic load and how it can be used to ensure your blood sugar levels remain stable.
The simple fact is that most low carbohydrate plans go too far in restricting foods. This book simply advises that you refrain from eating starchy food such as breads, potatoes, and rice. The book advocates eating proteins, vegetables and fruits as staples of your meals and even gives practical advice on how to have dessert without sabatoging your blood sugar.
Who should read this book? Everyone. Literally everyone can benefit from the practical knowledge of the effects of various foods and how to temper them. Rob Thompson's advice is simple yet powerful: avoid foods that will make you fat, exercise at least once every 48 hours (walking for 40 minutes is ideal), and see how over time your body will become healthy. The weight will come off slowly but surely; anywhere from 1 to 2 pounds a week can be expected.
I am personally following this way of life and love how easy and satisfying it is to follow. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It may not be magic, but it could save your life.

A cardiologist's revolutionary weight-loss plan that allows dieters to enjoy good carbs while still losing weight

The glycemic index has been the basis of many popular diets. But it doesn't take into account the serving sizes people actually eat and eliminates too many foods for dieters to stick with it. Now Dr. Robert Thompson's breakthrough program uses the glycemic load--the glycemic index adjusted for serving size--to take the GI a step forward. The glycemic load is a more accurate and effective tool in controlling weight and insulin resistance, allowing dieters to eat more foods while still burning fat, cutting cravings, and speeding up their metabolism. Safe, simple, and scientifically proven, it's the smartest weight-loss plan yet.

I don't "do" diets. This is so easy to follow, with meals that I would eat anyway.I lost 7 pounds in 11 days.I'm still losing!! I tried this on a recommendation from someone who lost over 30 pounds by following the Flat Belly Diet. She travels quite frequently and was able to do it. If you don't want to invest in the large book version...the pocket version has just as much information.

The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life Review

The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to start by saying I consider myself a pretty fine cook...we are a two chef household with strong culinary backgrounds. It's hard to impress me with new info. I'm also a weight loss coach...balance! Yin Yang!
Yet this book is very different than my other cookbooks. I actually read it cover-to-cover the day I got it. It's not just recipes. If you are totally new at learning how to cook healthy dishes, you will feel as though you've just had a crash course. Better yet, if you attended culinary school I swear there is enough "teach an old dog new tricks" info in here to continue learning...at least there was for us. While I already knew things like using pumpkin or applesauce in place of fat in cakes (it makes a spice cake BETTER and MOISTER and pumpkin is high fiber, high water, low glycemic so it takes as many calories as are in pumpkin to digest it so it's an amazing fat replacement in baked goods), I learned scores of new things...I now stock my cupboard, for example, with oat flour. After using it in her cake recipe I was floored. I have also been trying to create a low calorie and low fat hummus (yet yummy) for ages with no tahini. She beat me to it. I also hate the taste of low fat or no fat sour cream and her greek yogurt and lemon juice trick in the recipes has changed my Southwest dishes for good. The substitutions really do change your mind and the book is just as much about teaching the reader a lifestyle more than handing them some recipes.
That said, I wasn't happy not to find nutritional information in the book. Granted, I get the reasoning behind it since I read Bethenny's first book (if you didn't, you'll also get a good overview of it in here) and her mindset against dieting but, instead, enjoying good healthy food in moderation...however, statistically most of us eat 40% more calories than we think we do. For those of us who don't mind journaling our calories or who actually feel empowered by it, I hope that she adds a link to a website in which she lists them. This way, she takes away the obsession she is against in the caloric "food noise" in the book, but also allows those of us in control of our calories in vs. calories out to go that extra mile to get the info if we are gonna plug it in on the computer anyway...
...and that's exactly what I did this morning. I have been cooking from this book for days and I kid you not, I became convinced that the calorie count was left out because the food was TOO good and she had to be fooling us into thinking it was healthy. If you make the cake called "How Is This So Moist Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Glaze" as I did this morning, you'll understand. This is actually 1000% better than my fattest chocolate cake recipe laden with calories. I mean it is mind blowing good. And very filling. So I was positive I had to have eaten about 700 calories this morning until I actually plugged in the full recipe and included the peanut butter glaze (it makes more than enough glaze; you'll even have some leftover) and discovered the cake and pb glaze was just 150 calories/ serving. It is incredibly great without the peanut butter glaze too so I'm guessing that omission would even bring it down to 100 calories for something that tastes uber fattening and isn't! This recipe alone was worth the price of the book. In fact, Bethenny, the author, noted in the notes about this that the first time she made it she accused Jason, (her husband- according-to-the-front-page-news-as-of-yesterday), of throwing a stick of butter in it while she wasn't looking. I have no idea either how these ingredients make something that rich and low calorie but it's my new fave. I began plugging in the dishes I had made into my nutrional info converter and all were high in health and all natural, low in calories, low in fat, many high fiber...she should include the stats. It's a selling point, not a negative.
Try the lychee martini or skinnygirl cosmo (great tips on keeping drinks low cal!)
Try the guilt-free artichoke spinach cheese dip.
Pad Thai
Pasta Carbonara
Lasagna
Chicken Wings
Baked Ziti
Cranberry Almond Chicken Salad
Kettle Corn
Spicy Chipotle Dip
Quacamole
The pasta with the mushroom sauce using truffle oil is good enough to serve at a dinner party. We fell over ourselves eating that one two days straight in my house
Goat Cheese Dip
Spanish Spiced Rubbed Chicken with Mustard Green Onion Sauce
Red Velvet Cupcakes
You get the idea. What's unique is she lists scores of substitutions with each recipe so you really get the idea how to use what you have, transform a dish, make it go further, or how to pick up substituting low fat and low calorie ingredients in all your other dishes in ways you might not think of.
Also, I add non-fat greek yogurt to her excellent hummus recipe and it makes it super creamy and even higher in protein.
Better yet, while most of my diet cookbooks use substitutions that make a dish a tad more artificial, these are all natural and that always boosts taste.
Know going in: There are no photos in the book. While that never bugs me, I also know it does bug some people and it may be important to you. Also I wish the pages had been glossy (easier to wipe clean) rather than the school-book style novel paper which also made the ingredient list hard to read since it was in a lighter grey. I did need my reading glasses because of that. I think it may have been fine if the font was bigger and maybe they made the font smaller to keep the book at 300 pages which is one of the cut-off points for books, but, if so, I wish when they'd decreased the size, they'd changed the color to black like the rest of the recipe.
Conclusion: In my perfect world, the pages and binding and font color would be more like a cookbook than a novel but I read it like a novel since it's full of information. The dishes, and I mean every dish I've made from it, has been 5 star and we never feel deprived cooking easy dishes with everyday ingredeints we have at home or can substitute with her suggestions. If nothing else, taste that dang addictive and decadent chocolate cake with peanut butter glaze. So I forgave throwing on my reading glasses after I tasted the dishes. Now get that nutritional info on a website somewhere and I'll be eternally grateful--That said, I still love it.
