Before Your Pregnancy: A 90-Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception

I really wanted to like this book. I wasn't even expecting it to have lots of information that I didn't already know, having done a ton of research myself in my role as fertility counselor, but thought that it would be slightly helpful at least. It was not. It was instead incomplete and incorrect.
Conclusions made are inconsistent - thing A is to be treated with caution because its safety for pregnant women is unproven, whereas thing B is considered safe because it has never been shown to cause problems. Where is the logic here? There is no difference between "never been shown to cause problems" and "safety unproven". And if there is a difference in the proven safety of these two things, it should be stated explicitly rather than left at these two vague comments.
Some statements are just plain incorrect. For example, it is stated that ovulation is the day of the basal body temperature rise, when in fact the temperature rise usually occurs the day following ovulation. Also, intercourse on this day is stated to give the best chance of conception. This is incorrect whichever way you look at it - intercourse on the day of the temperature rise is usually too late (being the day after ovulation, the egg is often dead by then), and intercourse on the day of ovulation is still not the best timing (for those who are interested, intercourse the day before ovulation is best, although difficult to time). I have to wonder what other "facts" in this book are downright wrong.
Finally, conclusions are drawn without sharing the information used to make them. It is claimed that a woman who has no immunity to rubella must get vaccinated, stating that the potential risks of the vaccine far outweigh the benefits. Nowhere is it mentioned that an adult woman receiving the rubella vaccine has much higher risk of serious medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and thrombocytopenia, and that according to the CDC the incidence of rubella in the US is extremely low. Whether or not the benefits of this vaccine outweigh the risks is something for women to decide for themselves, with all pertinent information.
Now, I would expect a book written by two doctors to side more often with medical gospel than not, but I was very surprised by the lack of portrayal of the other side of the issues. Or more to the point, that some things were treated as complete non-issues: women are encouraged to run right out and get the flu and chicken pox shots, with no mention of their risks or efficacy.
I should say that I did find the information on weight, diet, and exercise to be very thorough and mostly consistent with other reading I have done. Still, I simply cannot recommend this book.

Working as a short order cook for a cantankerous teen who only likes cheese and chocolate could turn June Beaver into a mad housewife. Harper's fast and pretty darn good recipes give this crabby cook an easy, tasty and funny escape from our endless pasta and cheese menu. And if the kid won't eat it - great! - more for me. Stuff Every Man Should Know (Pocket Companions) Review

Stuff Every Man Should Know (Pocket Companions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is truly a great book. Great gift for a college grad, new son-in-law, wedding party member, or your spouse.
The range of subjects is amazingly broad. There is guaranteed to be something that you didn't know before in this book.
There is one mistake - on how to jump start a car. The tip calls for using standard jumper cables with four clamps - two Black and two Red.
Here is the sequence in the book: (starting from the step # where the clamps are attached...)
5. Red to Positive on fully charged battery
6. Red to Positive on discharged battery
7. Black to ground on metal on the dead car's engine (this step should be attaching Black to Negative on the discharged battery)
8. Black to Negative on the fully charged battery (this step should be ground to metal on the live car's engine)
Why? Because the final connection - the 4th one - will cause a spark. None of the first three connections will cause a spark because the circuit is incomplete. That spark can cause an explosion of the Hydrogen gas that MAY be leaking from either of the car batteries. The final connection should be far away from the battery (either one) as possible to avoid the potential explosion.
Buy the book anyway. It's superb.

I was delighted to find this little book at the store yesterday, and we decided over coffee to buy a couple of copies for presents. Lots and lots of illustrations and a wide variety of projects:
How to make the perfect bed
Tell time with a potato clock
A color coordinating wheel
Treat a snake bite
Tie basic sailing knots
Twist a balloon animals
Get out of a straight jacket
The authors run the Curiosity Shoppe in San Francisco, recently reviewed by "The New York Times": "You'll see fashionable, do-it-yourself types foraging for clever, handmade crafts at this shop in the Mission District. It carries items like coffee holders knitted from yarn, deer heads carved out of wood and skeleton keys fashioned out of porcelain."
This book would be fun to look through with kids, but it is actually written for adults. The website for the book (see the first Comment) is fast, graphic and very descriptive of the contents of the book. It will sell it to you [or not] with no further ado.

Highballs High Heels: A Girls Guide to the Art of Cocktails Review

Highballs High Heels: A Girls Guide to the Art of Cocktails

OK so maybe I like to wear high heels every once in a while, but that's not the only reason why I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The simple and articulate writing, the flow of the layout from page to page and the tasteful vintage-like illustrations makes this book a really great gift or just to own for yourself.
Here are a few reasons why I love this book.
#1 It looks a lot cooler than having the Sports Illustrated (Swim Suit edition) laying around.
#2 It shows that I am sensitive to certain women's issues.
#3 I finally learned how to make a decent drink.
#4 It impressed all my gay friends as well as my female friends and left all my buddies wondering (gotta love that!)
#5 It shows how I can be in touch my feminine side.
Highballs High Heels is for everyone to anyone.
A beautiful book with a very practical nature.
Do not let the title fool you.

Beat This Cookbook: Absolutely Unbeatable Knock-'em-Dead Recipes for the Very Best Dishes Review

Beat This Cookbook: Absolutely Unbeatable Knock-'em-Dead Recipes for the Very Best Dishes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose this book online because some of the editor reviews said, "..funniest, most engaging book about food." and "...more than a cookbook, it is a humor book and a self-help book and a security blanket and..."
And so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I don't think it is the funniest or most engaging humor book, it honestly reads like a cookbook with some recipes and a joke or funny story thrown into the directions and some author quotations in big balloon text.
As a cookbook, of the few recipes I've tried, it seems sound and I like the variety and the notion that..these are the very best recipes that someone else liked and has accumulated over many years and it is putting it all in 1 single book and for that I am grateful of.
As far as the organization, it is frustrating. It goes from Almond Triangles to Salsa to Apple Crisp to Artichoke Dip ? If I want to make a dessert, I want to flip to the Dessert Chapter and peruse all of the desserts in one section and read the ingredients to see which one I can make and which ones I have all of the ingredients for. What I don't want to do is flip to page 7 and then page 42 and then page 23 and back to page 84 to read all of the desserts. Imagine doing this for every food category (which is how the pre-sale/advanced reading copy is currently layed out).
Just keep it simple: Don't disappoint potential buyers thinking this is the funniest, most engaging humor book about food and just focus on, "This is a cookbook collection of the very best, most decadent, splurge this one-time, recipes that I've accumulated over the years." Don't mention it is "supposed" to be funny, let that be a reader's surprise. You could caption it with, "The "try and Beat This!" cookbook for when you want the absolute best-tasting recipe, not necessarily the most-healthy.*" This line is accurate and to the point, healthy-conscious buyers will move on and those that just want the best will salivate. Market this as an indulgence cookbook, nothing more.
*And this should appease those that say raw eggs are not healthy, etc, neither is steak cooked medium-rare, but a true food connoissieur doesn't care.
