This is a HUGE book. There are recipes for all occasions really. Best part is that they are easy recipes, not too many ingredients and those ingredients are not 'exotic' type ingredients, ones we have in our kitchen all the time mostly. The book covers breakfast lunch dinner really and of course dessert .... I love this book. Thanks Dick Logue.

The Church Supper Cookbook: A Special Collection of Over 375 Potluck Recipes from Families and Churches Across the Country Review

The Church Supper Cookbook: A Special Collection of Over 375 Potluck Recipes from Families and Churches Across the Country

I bought the Church Supper Cookbook after seeing the ad that came in the mail with beautiful looking pictures. I also tried the Barbara's Peachy Chicken & it was delicious! However, once I received the book, I found out that there are absolutely NO pictures in the book at all. With all the pictures in the ad, it led me to believe there would be pictures in the book.
I must admit that I am one of those non-professional every-day cooks that wants to see how it looks before I attempt to try it. So I was very disappointed.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Bartending Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Bartending

OK, I happen to be a relative, but that has nothing to do with my review of this book. Well, maybe a little, but the fact is, I'm no bartender. I don't have the know-how to mix drinks properly and I found this book REALLY easy to use. The arrangement by types of liquor make this guide truly idiot proof (no pun intended!).
It's a great bar companion especially when my more liquor adventurous guests are around and they want a drink even they don't know how to make.
Kudos to Amy for creating such a simple yet so useful guide!

Finally a health book that is speaking to real people in real circumstances that we deal with everyday. It's often not cool to speak on how fast or corner store food is killing us slowly, or how meat really effects our bodies. We claim to be out of the box with our thinking but this book teaches us that you don't have to be with the slowly dying crowd of junkie eaters food to be real. Being real is being healthy. I love this book and Volume 2 for it's real talk on health! Not sugar coated or Basic Useful Lies we Love to Spit to Help Ignore the Truth

The Complete Tassajara Cookbook: Recipes, Techniques, and Reflections from the Famed Zen Kitchen Review

The Complete Tassajara Cookbook: Recipes, Techniques, and Reflections from the Famed Zen Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a traditional cookbook. No pictures, lots of essays, some poetry, and basic recipes. What distinguishes it are Espe Brown's pontifications about cooking, zen, life. Like the movie, How To Cook Your Life, this book is an expression of Espe Brown's personality rather that his cooking expertise. The recipes are very basic - but I guess that's the point. He wants readers to cook by feel, by what they already know, rather than by measure and specific instructions. As I read many of the recipes, like the one for kidney bean chili, I thought, Wow, I already know how to do that.
I was also surprised that this wasn't a vegan or a health cookbook. Lots of the recipes call for eggs, milk, cheese, and oil. Not very au courant (the Engine 2 folks would have a fit), but I kind of like that about EB - he's got an acerbic (but loving) sense of humor - he can throw jabs at macrobiotics, and I'm sure at veganism. He's community-conscious and compassionate, but no food purist. Lots of vegan cookbooks seem rather self-righteous and humorless. EB's cookbook is imperfect, but meandering and fun.

Think of this: Greek men have 90% less heart attacks than American men. Yes, I said 90% less. Statistics like this have led scientists to spend more than 20 years studying the Mediterranean diet, Dr. Ozner, a cardiologist based in Miami, summarizes the enormous benefits of this lifestyle in his book. He offers many patient tested (& patient suggested) recipes, all delicious. The basic foods in this diet are pasta, fresh vegetables, beans, whole grains, cold-water fish, nuts, olives, tomatoes, olive oil and red wine. Simple, but rarely followed in America. The Mediterranean diet is rich in benefits, inexpensive and there's an added benefit: weight loss. The book is a winner, easy to read and highly recommended.

How to Drink Review

How to Drink

Nice little book for my Kindle. Lots to learn and very good hints and tip. This is a subject of which I have only a smattering of knowledge, I should say. So as an occasional drinker, I am finding this read useful. Good to pickup right before the holidays!
Just had to add, after spending some more time with this little gem, it's really worth a read. Very well written and evocative. Heck, it even drove me to Amazon to hunt for a certain tea!

In the past few decades, many of us have become sophisticated about food, but we have not given the same attention to what we drink. In How to Drink, Victoria Moore aims to redress the balance, by showing how to drink well throughout the seasons and at all times of day.She explains how to make the most delicious coffee and juices; how to choose wine that complements your food; and how to make cocktails for every occasion--whether to serve a garden barbecue, as a cold weather aperitif, or just to unwind with at the end of the day. Here are recipes for mint juleps in the spring, sloe gin in the autumn, hot buttered rum in the winter, and year-round showstoppers including the world's best gin and tonic. Moore is also an impassioned advocate of unfairly maligned drinks such as sherry, Campari and saki, and gives fascinating historical background on different spirits as well as invaluable advice on creating your home bar.How to Drink is a hugely readable, browseable and authoritative handbook, whose aim is to inform, entertain and crucially, make sure you can find the right drink at the right time."It doesn't need to be either difficult or expensive to drink as well as you eat, it just requires a little care...""A splendid book. Victoria Moore is quite right--it's not how much you drink but how you drink." --Fergus Henderson, chef and co-owner, St. Johns Restaurant"I loved How to Drink. For the first time in years I have broken open a bottle of vodka for a Bloody Mary, remembered how much better mulled cider is than mulled wine, drawn a fresh kettle for tea..." --Joanna Weinberg, author of How to Feed Your Friends with Relish"Anyone who loves their food should heed this unmatchable tutorial in the art of enjoying drink; Victoria Moore succinctly puts every sip in lively context, banishing the guilt from the pleasure of it all." --Rose Prince, author of The New English Kitchen

EAT: The Effortless Weight Loss Solution Review

EAT: The Effortless Weight Loss Solution
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am not one to read a nutrition book, but after seeing the doctor talk about the book on Rachael Ray, I decided to give it a try. I HIGHLY recommend this book, if you're not one that gets into all the scientific data and jargon that tends to fill so many of the nutrition books; If you want a book that just gets to the basic points of healthy eating that you might not know, and gives you a concise, quick summary of how to achieve healthy eating goals, then this is THE BOOK! I couldn't believe how informative it was without all the extra junk that nobody understands or pays attention to. This is practical life application information on how to eat better. With simple food lists summarizing whats at the top of the list in terms of the healthiest choices to make and it's all the stuff you really need to pay attention to at the grocery store and everyday stuff. This book was very motivational and encouraging to get me and my family started on healthier eating choices. And I understand better the WHY's of many topics such as carbs/whole grains/proteins/etc. that I just thought I knew before. This book is just simply good for you.

The book did not come with the Access code....My class needed it, so it was slightly annoying that it wasn't all bound together. So, piece of advice, ask if you need the access code and then try to find a packaged deal. Otherwise its about another $40.
The book itself is good though...

Prairie Home Cooking: 400 Recipes that Celebrate the Bountiful Harvests, Creative Cooks, and Comforting Foods of the American Heartland (America Cooks)
Average Reviews:

As a fellow native of Kansas City, I see Ms. Fertig's work everywhere- in newspapers, in bookstores, and on television. And like other Midwesterners, I admire her efforts to give our regional cooking the status it deserves. This book eliminates any doubts about the quality of Midwestern cooking. It has been a huge success locally, and the nationwide attention it is receiving is equally justified. Ms. Fertig mixes ethnic dishes such as Bratwurst with Caramelized Onion and Apples with modern classics like Vegetable Garden Pot Roast to yield a truly well-rounded image of the Midwestern culinary tradition. For those skeptics out there, one bite of the heavenly Blue Cheese and Toasted Pecan Spread will convert you! I've had the pleasure of attending some of Ms. Fertig's cooking classes, and her penchant for humor and storytelling are clearly reflected in her book. I strongly recommend it for any avid cooks who wish to get in touch with their roots. This is the epitome comfort food.

Joy Bauer's Food Cures: Eat Right to Get Healthier, Look Younger, and Add Years to Your Life Review

Joy Bauer's Food Cures: Eat Right to Get Healthier, Look Younger, and Add Years to Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are just starting to think about food as a "drug" in terms of how different foods can affect your mood, health and overall well-being, then this book is for you. Joy Bauer provides a good, basic overview of certain key foods and how they can keep you healthy or, if you have a particular health problem, how various foods can either calm or exacerbate your condition.
The format of the book is useful in that it suggests specific foods to seek out and to avoid for different health situations. For example, there is a chapter that discusses arthritis and delineates which foods are likely to help you control inflammation. There is another chapter on moods, with information on which foods tend to promote depression and which tend to promote a general sense of well-being.
Because of this "disease-oriented" format, however, the book does at times seem repetitive, as the same food (spinach, for instance) is discussed in many different places throughout the book. Thus, Food Cures is not very useful if you just want to check out a single food or group of foods, since you will have to skip from page to page and will probably end up reading the same information in several different places. Another thing that I found irritating is the large size of this publication. It is awkward to hold and quite heavy, even though it's paper bound.
Nevertheless, Food Cures is a solid reference guide written in easily understandable language for the average reader. It is worth buying if you don't have a lot of other nutrition books in your personal library. If, on the other hand, you already own a few books by people like Andrew Weil or Barry Sears, then I recommend that you pass on this one.

The American Frugal Housewife Review

The American Frugal Housewife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book over 10 years ago, at the Sturbridge Village gift shop, and I swear, I've read it so much that I probably have whole sections memorized! It is, without doubt, THE best book of its kind.
The American Frugal Housewife is fascinating on a variety of levels, not the least in that Child wrote the book with the emphasis on "AMERICAN." Other such books existed at the time, but they were written in England and for English women. Child was one of the Transcendentalists who were huge advocates of personal self-discipline and restraint, but believed to their core the importance of fighting for what they knew to be right. It wasn't just a religious fervor -although Child's Christianity, like that of Catherine and Harriet Beecher Stowe, was extremely important - but a belief that the still relatively new United States had a unique destiny that set it apart from the rest of the world, specifically the old, decrepit world that was Europe.
Child was no blindfolded nationalist, however. She saw the flaws and contradictions that bound the new Republic. Child, like many other Transcendentalists, was a fervent abolitionist and a proponent of women's equality, and worked all her life toward achieving those ends. Even with its problems, Child was an ardent American. She saw Americans as a unique race of people with a unique and powerful destiny. Americans, she believed, were new and unique, and that the American destiny was far different from the degenerate, rotting hulk of Old World Europe.
So what does all this have to do with the American Frugal Housewife? Well, Child wrote the book specifically to address AMERICAN houswives and what she knew to be their unique problems and issues. It's much more than just a recipe book; it embodies Child's philosophy that the only way toward virtue was self-restraint and sobriety, and that the way to tutor the new nation in these values was by teaching the nation's housewives - the hand that rocks the cradle, Child believed, did indeed rule the world.
The new nation was becoming prosperous, and Child saw that then, like now, people had a difficult time learning how to restrain themselves financially. One part in particular has to do with how mothers should raise their daughters. Child believed they should teach their offspring the virtues of frugality, that it was better to put savings "out at interest" and earn wealth from it, then to indulge in the latest fad - one in this case being something called a Brussels carpet. As new brides went out to set up their household, Child lectures at how they drive their husbands to bankruptcy by embracing fads and trying to keep up with the Joneses.
Other, cheaper types of carpet "will answer just as well," Child wrote. She also recommends using cheap illustrations, nicely framed, as wall art, rather than going overboard to buy the latest European style.
Some of the best sections are on frugality. Child was the "Hints from Heloise" queen of her day, and she's got a solution for everything that could possibly beset the early 19th century housewife. The interesting thing, as others have noted, is how so many of her tips still work so well.
I don't know that I'm ever going to need her instructions on how to brew my own soap in a backyard kettle or how to keep my homemade pickles in a barrel from turning soft, but I did get a burn mark out of an antique chest by using rottenstone and oil, just as she prescribed.
What's rottenstone, you ask? Well, you can buy it at a hardware store, but if you want the recipe, buy the book! It's a fantastic window on early American life, but the sound advice inside, about not getting into debt and how to "do up" your brass so it doesn't tarnish, is still amazingly useful.
I guarantee you'll become a Child fan, just like me! :)

Chemistry and Technology of Soft Drinks and Fruit Juices Review

Chemistry and Technology of Soft Drinks and Fruit Juices
Average Reviews:

The book is a collection of papers by various authors in this field. It gives you an appreciation of the tremendous effort that goes into producing your generic soft drink or fruit juice. The chemistry is nontrivial, and rarely covered in a general chemistry or biology text. Thus, you have to search for the rare book like this one, that does give technical details of the various processing steps.
And not just of the processing. There is also considerable discussion about the packaging. Vital in preserving the contents for as long as possible.
The average consumer, of course, has no inkling of all this. But now you do.

Michelles Miracle Tart Cherry CherriMax Review

Michelles Miracle Tart Cherry CherriMax
Average Reviews:

Michelle's Miracle is the best cherri supplement I have found for Gout. For a while this product was not available on Amazaon, so I tried many different brands. Some didnt work at all, some works OK. I found one that kind of works and I would use that on a daily basis. However, I kept a stash of Micheelle's Miracle CherriMax around and when ever I would start to feel a flare up I would take a couple. Goes away every time and this brand is the only brand I can say that about.
One tip; don't take out the little moister absorber pouch (silica gel) from the bottle. If you do you will end up with one big clump of pills.
