diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide) Review

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over 400 pages of tips, techniques, a massive section on drinks (with pictures), spirits reviews and a guide to the worlds best cocktail bars. Heavy enough to qualify as a weapon in most jurisdictions, it is solidly bound, well laid out, and printed in a large format. So unlike most drinks books, it is easy to read, nicely indexed in various ways, and can be used as a reference for years to come without falling apart.
As a repository of all cocktail knowledge and wisdom it easily surpasses the Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (long considered an industry standard manual and now in its 66th edition), in quality, depth, breadth and sheer numbers of cocktails. If you are going to buy any cocktail book, this is the one to have.

Slurp: Drinks and Light Fare, All Day, All Night

The best thing about this book is the stunning photography. It starts out with some basics talking about the various types of barware and garnishes. The book is then divided by the time of day. It gives recipe for non-alcoholic and alcoholic breakfast drinks and a couple of recipes of what would go with them food wise. It then goes on to cover lunch and dinner. The recipes are simple. There are a few recipes that I thought I might try. As far as a drink book goes, you get a lot more in an actual bar book. If all you want is just a sampling of drinks this book would be good for you.

When was the last time that you felt as if you couldn't put a cocktail book down? I'm guessing that the answer is never and that's simply because you haven't opened the cover of Plotkin's Secrets Revealed of America's Greatest Cocktails. Inside you'll find the expected collection of great cocktail recipes but what makes Plotkin's latest tome truly unique and captivating is the complimenting, snappy images, product profiles, and detailed instructions that allow the home bartender to create libations like a professional mixologist. Beyond its many practical attributes this book is simply beautiful earning a place on my coffee table as it offers hours of whimsical reading. I enjoy taking in the many profiles of America's favorite bars and restaurants, the history of classic cocktails, and the modern variations that they have inspired. A must own for anyone who enjoys the occasional cocktail or has dreamed of throwing an unforgettable party. It makes a great gift too...

What a find! I am so happy to have a book that lets me fix down-and-dirty as well as froo-froo drinks for all my friends, both those who imbibe and those who don't. The drinks in this book and inventive and new--not the same old boring stuff in other drink books. It makes a great housewarming present, and a great Fourth of July resource

A hot day, a soft breeze, and a tall, cool drink in your hand . . . No longer just vacation-time treats, dozens of irresistible, frosty concoctions are just a whir of the blender away. In warm weather, there are few occasions--and few times of day--when an icy beverage doesn't hit the spot. For just such moments, frozen drink wizard Bruce Weinstein has created more than one hundred simple, innovative recipes for slushees, daiquiris, margaritas, coladas, chocolate and coffee drinks, and granitas and sorbets. From traditional poolside favorites such as pine-apple daiquiris and piña coladas to the immensely popular coffeehouse Frappuccinos and Mochaccinos, Frozen Drinks covers the range of icy treats, tangy or sweet, slushy or smooth. Try starting your morning with a Quadruple Coffee Shake, take an afternoon break with a glass of Frozen Raspberry Lemonade, or savor a dessert of Iced German Chocolate Cake. The book's introduction provides essential information for making perfect drinks every time, such as when to use fresh fruit and when canned or frozen fruit will do. Each recipe is nonalcoholic but has tasty variations, some with and some without alcohol. There are also a number of creative suggestions for garnishes, such as crumbled peppermint patties on a Chocolate Mint Parfait or candy canes to top off a Cabana Striped Slush. With dozens of ways to slice, dice, and blend your way through the summer, Frozen Drinks will be as welcome as an air conditioner in August.

The Rum 1000: The Ultimate Collection of Rum Cocktails, Recipes, Facts, and Resources (Bartender Magazine) Review

The Rum 1000: The Ultimate Collection of Rum Cocktails, Recipes, Facts, and Resources (Bartender Magazine)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very excited when I received my copy of Ray Foley's "The Rum 1000," especially since it had been a while since I had last reviewed a rum book.
The book is organized into five chapters:
Chapter one: 75 rum facts
Chapter two: 700 rum cocktails
Chapter three: 50 food recipes using rum
Chapter four: 75 rum producers and
Chapter five: 100 rum websites
Adding all the above you get the "1000" referred to in the book's title. While I was pleased with the cocktail and food recipes, all other chapters left me a bit disappointed, especially chapter one, as many of the facts are wrong and others are misleading. A few examples:
"Most, but not all, rums come from Puerto Rico and the West Indies"
"Premium rums are made from small batches of aged and gently distilled rum"
"Other rums are aged in stainless steel tanks"
"Ron Añejo means a rum that has been significantly aged"
I believe that Mr. Foley could have avoided some of the confusing by elaborating on each fact, rather than simply stating it in a brief sentence, especially the ones dealing with controversial topics, such as aging (for the record, storage in stainless steel containers is NOT aging).
Another suggestion for the second edition -and I do hope there will be one, as the world needs more books about this wonderful spirit- is to maintain the lists of rum distillers and rum websites on-line, and provide a link to these lists on the book, this way the content can be dynamically updated to allow it to reflect the changing times.
I recommend this book to those looking to enhance their libraries with a collection of food and drink recipes. Serious rum enthusiasts looking for more -and more accurate- rum facts, however, will be disappointed.

Capital Cooking Cookbook Review

Capital Cooking Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a cookbook junkie for a long time, yet the country's recent explosion in interest in eating well has been followed by an increasing number of mediocre cookbooks. The Capital Cooking Cookbook, however, is refreshingly different. I picked it up after catching Ms. DeSantis's D.C.-produced television show on Colours, a small network on Dish. The book stands out from most cookbooks for a couple of reasons. First, it is not just a cookbook, but also follows the story of the Capital Cooking show and how Ms. DeSantis, the host and producer, started it as a creative outlet from her day job as a lawyer. That alone may inspire readers who have dreamt of a creative world outside of their nine-to-five. It also features some beautiful, as well as a few humorous, pictures of Ms. DeSantis and the Capital Cooking crew hard at work.
Second, the recipes are diverse but accessible. They range from simple homestyle meals that are not that difficult to make but taste really good (I have already tried several of them at home) to high-end restaurant recipes (for which Ms. DeSantis often provides alternative ingredients/techniques for the common kitchen at home). This style is likely born of the fact that Ms. DeSantis is not a chef by training but has cooked with some of the best chefs in the Washington area and included their recipes in the book. The photography is mostly clean and colorful, and I like the book's relatively smaller size and fewer number of recipes as compared to larger cookbooks. This may seem counter-intuitive, but I often become lost in cookbooks with hundreds of recipes, confused as to which recipes are truly the best to try out and wondering if many of them aren't simply "filler material." Not so with the Capital Cooking Cookbook.
Hopefully we will see additional books from this up-and-coming entertainer, and that a hardcover version is available in the future. The Capital Cooking Cookbook is excellent and well worth owning.

Good Spirits: Recipes, Revelations, Refreshments, and Romance, Shaken and Served with a Twist

As a big fan of A.J. Rathbun's previous cocktail book, Party Drinks, I have to admit that I had high expectations for his comprehensive guide, Good Spirits. But as I cracked open the new book, I immediately knew that he had knocked this one out of the park. The recipes are easy to follow, and the descriptions make me want to shake, stir, and sip almost every drink in the book. (The mouthwatering photos in Good Spirits add to the attraction too!) But, most importantly, since this is a book about good times and good fun, A.J. has taken great care to make sure that the book itself is part of the joy of entertaining. Like the cocktails in the book, Good Spirits is perfectly mixed!

Infused: 100+ Recipes for Infused Liqueurs and Cocktails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this book on a recent trip to Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon. I've made liqueurs in the past and this book rekindled my interest in this culinary hobby. One aspect that I especially like about this book is that most all of the infustion recipes can are adaptable to making infused spirits (sans sugar syrup) or liqueurs (sweet libations). Many of the recipes have variations. For instance, the Elderflower Liqueur recipe lists variations on adapting the recipe to create Lavender, Rose, or Violet liqueuers.
The book is very nicely designed and pictures of the liqueurs and the cocktails they enhance are likely to make your mouth water. (They did mine.)

Infused liqueurs are the hot new ingredients for cocktails. With more than 30 infusions plus dozens of drinks to use them in, Infused combines spirits like vodka and rum with fruits, flowers, herbs, and spices to create superior liqueurs. Take the Gibson and give it a kick with Onion Vodka. Cool down with Watermelon Martinis on warm summer days, or get the heat going with Hot Mint Chocolate spiked with Mind Vodka, a perfect antidote to cold winter nights. Many infusions pair with multiple recipes: herb-infused vodkas enliven both the Rosemary Martini and the Strawberry Basil Martini. Chocolate Vodka is the indulgence in the Chocolate Martini, Brandy Alexander, and the Grasshopper. The versatility of each infusion makes giving a bottle of homemade liqueur a unique gift for any drink connoisseur. With tips on how to shake, stir, and chill, and enough recipes and ideas to reinvent any party, this colorful little book is the ultimate infusion of fun.

Tequila: A Guide to Types, Flights, Cocktails, and Bites

I've never written an Amazon review before, but I have to rave about Joanne's tequila-infused cooking! Last night I was fortunate enough to hear her speak at a book signing-demonstration at the Tyler Florence store here in Mill Valley, Ca.
During the course of her presentation, some assistants were serving samples of food from the recipes in the book. When I tasted Joanne's GUACAMOLE SOUP I was F L O O R E D! It was just sublime. Buy the book if for no other reason than to get that recipe!
All hyperbole aside, Joanne knows her tequila and she knows how to create a tasty but DOABLE recipe that brings out the best in the liquor and the food ingredients. I'm a die-hard fan from now on.

The New TequilaTequila has come a long way since the days of salt, shot, lime, repeat. With tequila consumption on the rise, people are choosing tequila on more occasions, experimenting with new labels, and learning to appreciate the nuances of flavor. TEQUILA is an all-in-one reference for the top-shelf tequila connoisseur, with chapters on the history and lore of tequila, insight into how tequila is made, an exploration of the agave fields of Jalisco, and a drinker's guide to the four types of tequila: blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo. Spice & Ice Review

Spice and Ice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quite an excellent reference for cocktails that are a little different. Well conceived.
Kara organizes these drink recipes by season (of the year) with the aim of showcasing fresh, seasonal ingredients. The "Wasabi-Tini" ushers in spring (a caveat: wasabi-ize with the utmost care). Summer's "Watermelon Hot" combines freshly pulsed watermelon with green Thai chilies to allay (or perhaps obliterate) the worst of those dog days. Autumn's "Mule Kick" is a variant of the "Moscow Mule," using jalapeño-infused Vodka. Winter's "Mexican Hot Chocolate" is a multi-step recipe but evidently worth the trouble: hot chocolate with Kahluá plus a half teaspoon of a "Mexican Spice Mix" composed of chili powder, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.
A good solid third of the book involves preparation and method, how to handle spices, spicy cocktail food pairings, and an especially eye-opening (if not eye-watering) section on how to make spice-infused liquors and syrups.
Extremely valuable.

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide Review

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Seagram's book is an OK book. It reminds me a lot of the Mr. Boston book. Unlike one of the reviewer's below I could not find "Caesar" in the book-maybe there is a newer addition than the 1995 version I have (although this seems to be the one that Amazon is selling). I also could not find some of the popular drinks like "Bellini" or "Caipirinha." I like the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide much better. Pulpfoto's review below says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide is A to Z like a dictionary so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. It seems pretty straight forward to me. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category.

I had a chance to meet Mrs. Rink at the Cleveland Food Show as well as watch one of her demonstrations. I must say she is as fun as her cookie recipies are! Her energy and sense of humor made the presentation a blast to watch. I then purchased her book. I figured that my normal Christmas cookies could use a little "pick me up". (How many Peanut Butter cookies can I make?) I do not bake alot and would not even consider myself a novice, however the simplicity of her recipies was incredible! I have thus far made 4 different recipies from her book. They all have turned out great! I have gotten great feedback (no pun intended) from my bakery treats and people love it when I tell them the drink name each bakery item is modeled after. The cookies do really taste like their drink counterparts...( The drinks are something I do know about!) however you are not going to get arrested for a DUI after a few of these. I am looking forward to making more!! Say goodbye to boring cookies and Hello to fun creative baking with a twist!!!!
