What a find! I am so happy to have a book that lets me fix down-and-dirty as well as froo-froo drinks for all my friends, both those who imbibe and those who don't. The drinks in this book and inventive and new--not the same old boring stuff in other drink books. It makes a great housewarming present, and a great Fourth of July resource

A hot day, a soft breeze, and a tall, cool drink in your hand . . . No longer just vacation-time treats, dozens of irresistible, frosty concoctions are just a whir of the blender away. In warm weather, there are few occasions--and few times of day--when an icy beverage doesn't hit the spot. For just such moments, frozen drink wizard Bruce Weinstein has created more than one hundred simple, innovative recipes for slushees, daiquiris, margaritas, coladas, chocolate and coffee drinks, and granitas and sorbets. From traditional poolside favorites such as pine-apple daiquiris and piña coladas to the immensely popular coffeehouse Frappuccinos and Mochaccinos, Frozen Drinks covers the range of icy treats, tangy or sweet, slushy or smooth. Try starting your morning with a Quadruple Coffee Shake, take an afternoon break with a glass of Frozen Raspberry Lemonade, or savor a dessert of Iced German Chocolate Cake. The book's introduction provides essential information for making perfect drinks every time, such as when to use fresh fruit and when canned or frozen fruit will do. Each recipe is nonalcoholic but has tasty variations, some with and some without alcohol. There are also a number of creative suggestions for garnishes, such as crumbled peppermint patties on a Chocolate Mint Parfait or candy canes to top off a Cabana Striped Slush. With dozens of ways to slice, dice, and blend your way through the summer, Frozen Drinks will be as welcome as an air conditioner in August.

Cocktails In Tahiti Review

My husband and I went to Tahiti for our honeymoon. I saw this book on Amazon.com and I just had to have it. The pictures, facts and drinks were amazing!
I decided to have a Tahitian party last weekend with my family and friends. I was able to recreate the Tahitian cocktails we had on our honeymoon and share some interesting facts about the islands, as well as, the hotels in the French Polynesia. The cocktails were so easy to make and they looked so festive. I was able to recreate the look of the cocktail by using the pictures in the book. Everyone at my party kept raving about how much they loved what they were drinking and wanted to see the Tahitian cocktail book. After looking at the book - they just had to have a copy. I was so excited about their requests, I can order this book on-line and have it shipped to my home just in time for Christmas. I do not have to "fight" the crowds at the mall! My party was a huge Tahitian success!
If you want to bring the French Polynesia Islands to your home and experience paradise - I highly recommend this book. Thank you for making my party festive and memorable!!!

Anheuser-Busch Cookbook: Great Food, Great Beer Review

Anheuser-Busch Cookbook: Great Food, Great Beer
Average Reviews:

I bought a copy of this book as a quick present for my brother, who loves beer. After reading through it, I bought another copy for myself. I thought it would be filled with bar food or recipes that use beer in all recipes with little regard to taste. This is not the case. The recipes are excellent and most are easy to make. Sunset magazine has collaborated with Anheuser-Busch to create sophisticated recipes and beer recommendations for each. Everyone I made so far has been great, whether enjoyed with beer or not. This book is impressively comprehensive and covers everything from appetizers to desserts. Excellent cook book!

Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook Review

Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Typical to a Martha enterprise, this book is well-conceived, thoughtful, and gorgeously produced. It contains a wide variety of meals, arranged according to season. This concept allows the cook to find recipes for foods that are fresh in the market and make the most of what is in peak flavor. The recipes include familiar dishes with new twists and unique dishes that tempt. Unfortunately, the recipes seem not to have been tested adequately, as sometimes the amounts were off or the cooking times were wrong. This seems to be a problem in some of the recipes presented in the Martha Stewart Living magazine. Also, ... not all of these dishes are exactly quick. The criticism about underseasoning in the dishes is valid; final products were at times quite bland. In a cookbook de-emphasizing fats, use of herbs, spices, and seasonings becomes important. For an experienced cook with a critical eye, this may be a source for ideas. ...

This is an excellent book to get a great party going. Under the assumption that you and your buddies want to get drunk and fast, this book contains everything from the classics to the unknowns. I've given almost every shot in this book a try (those that I haven't tried were simply because I lacked the exact ingredients) and everything ranges from pretty tasty to strange and exotic. I highly recommend if you want to impress your friends with some bartending knowledge of how to make some fun-filled shots. This hand-sized book will keep everyone happy (and some smiling on the floor). Take it with you if you're not hosting a party, it'll surely fit in just about any size pocket!
It also has a very useful strap along the back to save a favorite page, etc.

Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook (Betty Crocker Books) Review

Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook (Betty Crocker Books)

Excellent choice for the coming holiday season. I am especially excited about the huge section towards the back with ideas for gifts. Very creative things like fudge, candy-making, powdered drink mixes, life-saver ornaments, etc. Additionally, there's a section on crafts, like making your own garland with real dried apples as well as centerpieces with pine cones and candles. All this paired with dinner recipes, appetizers, desserts and best of all, alcoholic drinks - cran-tinis, homemade eggnog, the works. I am very excited to have this book, and for $13.57 (retail $19.99), it beats any other cookbook I've owned in the past.

College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends Review

College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a foodie, but I like to cook. I've also found its one of the greatest ways to pull together people from diverse backgrounds--nothing like closeting a group of unrelated people in a cozy kitchen, pulling out some good food and drink, and chatting. Beats the heck out of the cardboard pizza most study and discussion groups serve. So, when I received a copy of Megan and Jill Carle's College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends, I have to admit I was more than ready to give it a go.
Now, normally a cookbook labeled "College Cooking" is going to have 101 things to do with Ramen Noodles or 100+ ways to microwave canned foods so that they no longer resemble canned foods. The Carles didn't take this approach, however. They've put together real recipes, using real foods. The catch is, you're going to need a real kitchen--or at least access to one--to make their dishes. Sometimes that's not such an easy item to come by when you're still in college--even if you are a graduate student.
What do the Carles have to offer? Let's take a look at last week's brunch: fresh tomato soup (ripe tomatoes, salt, milk, and pepper), chicken salad pita sandwiches (real chicken, lettuce, celery, cucumber, grapes and a peppery mayo), zucchini olive salad (strips of crisp zuchinni, garlic, basil, lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper, Parmesan, black olives and sunflower seeds), and lemon sugar cookies (made with real butter). Everyone had fun lending a hand with the meal and it was absolutely yummy!
Unfortunately, everything in this meal--with the exception of the zuchinni salad--required access to a full kitchen; and that particular fact applies to almost every recipe in the Carles' book. Also, the Carles give quite a few tips on making vegetarian dishes using their recipes; but few tips on making their recipes either low-cal or low-fat. All of which explains why I'm reviewing this particular "College" cookbook on the graduate school site and not the colleges site--graduate students have been out of the nest long enough to have learned a few tricks to manage these particular issues.
If you do have access to a full kitchen (and a nice enough bank balance to afford some of the more particular ingredients these recipes call for--like fresh black olives as opposed to canned), the Carles have put together a really nice collection of recipes covering everything from comfort foods to party foods in College Cooking: Feed Yourself and Your Friends.

You have a midterm tomorrow and a fierce growl in your stomach. Your roommate just nabbed your last cup o' ramen. Do you: (A) Ignore your stomach and brew another pot of coffee? (B) Break out the PB&J? (C) Order pizza—again? (D) Make a quick trip to the grocery store? The answer's D, and College Cooking is the only study guide you'll need.Sisters Megan and Jill Carle know all about leaving a well-stocked kitchen to face an empty apartment fridge with little time to cook and very little money. They practically grew up in their parents' kitchen, but even that didn't prepare them for braving the supermarket aisles on their own. That's why they wrote COLLEGE COOKING—to share the tips and tricks they've learned while feeding themselves between late-night studying, papers, parties, and other distractions.Starting with kitchen basics, Megan and Jill first cover ingredients, equipment, and other prereqs for cooking a decent meal. They then provide more than ninety simple yet tasteworthy recipes—hearty home-style dishes, study-break snacks, healthy salads, sweet treats, and more (along with low-cal and veggie options). You'll find easy and cheap-to-make dishes, like: Tortilla Soup • Chili with Green Chile Cornbread • Chicken Salad Pita Sandwiches • Baked Penne Pasta with Italian Sausage • What's-in-the-Fridge Frittata • Peanut Butter Cup Bars • Brownie Bites You'll also find recipes for feeding a household of roommates, maximizing leftovers, cooking for a dinner date, and hosting parties with minimal prep and cost. Just consider COLLEGE COOKING your crash course in kitchen survival—and required reading for off-campus living.Reviews"College Cooking is a must-pack, along with the fry pan and the blender, for those going back to college or starting this year."—Arizona Republic"The recipes are quick, easy, and simple."—Kansas City Star"This is reasonable food reasonably fast. I was going too give the cookbook to someone in college, but no way. This is going straight into my collection."—Oakland Tribune

Drink This: Wine Made Simple Review

Drink This: Wine Made Simple

Years ago Dara wrote a food column with step-by-step instructions for learning the concept of "dry". Several friends and I had a blast (aided by 6 bottles of wine and as many beers) as we compared wines, beers, cheeses, fruits and crackers to get an in-depth understanding of dry. At the time, we wished Dara would do more of this type of writing. Now she has. I assembled my friends together again and we started with the Zinfandel chapter. As one friend said after the Zinfandel was gone, "I could have learned this in a class, but this was much more fun." It was also educational. By following Dara's instructions, I finally can taste pepper, cinnamon or blackberries in wine. We are already planning our next wine tasting party. Read This.

Why Do Men Have Nipples Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini
Average Reviews:

"Why Do Men Have Nipples?" was big fun. I have to admit having had some of the sillier questions take up space in my head for years. You aren't going to find answers to life or definitive information on the origin of the universe here, just some of the more interesting facts we can't live without. This book had me laughing out loud, sometimes at the questions, sometimes because the question was ever asked in the first place. I am proud to say I already knew why your teeth chatter in the cold or with a fever (body trying to warm up) and sucking the poison from a snake bite wasn't such a good idea. I didn't know the average desk in the average workplace could kill you with the amount of germs and bacteria outnumbering those on the toilet seat. Think hand sanitizer for stocking stuffers this year!! There are hundreds more interesting and sometimes strange facts I didn't know but the team of Goldberg and Leyner has now educated me to the level of expert. I am not sure if that's something to be proud of or not but I laughed and laughed hard while reading "Why Do Men Have Nipples?" and I suggest it to anyone who might be tempted to accost a doctor outside of his office for answers to some of the more pressing questions you have about the human body. Recommended highly!

You're filled with liquid courage . . . now is your chance! If you've ever wanted to ask a doctor . . .•How do people in wheelchairs have sex?•Why do I get a killer headache when I suck down my milkshake too fast?•Can I lose my contact lens inside my head forever?•Why does asparagus make my pee smell?•Why do old people grow hair on their ears?•Is the old adage "beer before liquor, never sicker, liquor before beer . . ." really true? . . . then Why Do Men Have Nipples? is the book for you.Compiled by Billy Goldberg, an emergency medicine physician, and Mark Leyner, bestselling author and well-known satirist, Why Do Men Have Nipples? offers real factual and really funny answers to some of the big questions about the oddities of our bodies.

Betty Crocker's Cookbook: Everything You Need to Know to Cook Today (Betty Crocker's Cookbook, 9th ed)
Average Reviews:

I have always had a Betty Crocker cookbook around. It was the first cookbook I took with me when I moved away from home, and it still remains the first book I grab for if I have *any* questions about a recipe I'm making.
The book is great for cooks of all levels. It has a lot of great introductory information - how do you boil an egg? What are the different cuts of meat? It provides a lot of easy recipes that taste delicious and are nutritious as well.
In addition, the book also eases you into many advanced recipes. Looking to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for the relatives? Trying to make a birthday dinner really special? This cookbook has the recipes for you, all easy to understand and with gorgeous photos.
This version is definitely an improvement on previous versions as well. There is information on grilling and vegetarian meals, something lacking in the last versions. They've also added in a number of ethnic dishes that are quite tasty.
If this book isn't on your kitchen shelf, be sure to buy a copy!

I was expecting a sophisticated collection of easy recipes, more in the vein of the Barefoot Contessa books, but this is merely a rehash of 70's suburban-housewife buffet food. Do we really need a recipe for franks and beans? And scrambled eggs with Velveeta? Also surprised that the apparently talented photographer took on this book...some of the food looks truly unappetizing, for instance the creamed spinach on page 121. Very disappointing book.

I was delighted to find this little book at the store yesterday, and we decided over coffee to buy a couple of copies for presents. Lots and lots of illustrations and a wide variety of projects:
How to make the perfect bed
Tell time with a potato clock
A color coordinating wheel
Treat a snake bite
Tie basic sailing knots
Twist a balloon animals
Get out of a straight jacket
The authors run the Curiosity Shoppe in San Francisco, recently reviewed by "The New York Times": "You'll see fashionable, do-it-yourself types foraging for clever, handmade crafts at this shop in the Mission District. It carries items like coffee holders knitted from yarn, deer heads carved out of wood and skeleton keys fashioned out of porcelain."
This book would be fun to look through with kids, but it is actually written for adults. The website for the book (see the first Comment) is fast, graphic and very descriptive of the contents of the book. It will sell it to you [or not] with no further ado.

The Complete Meat Cookbook Review

The Complete Meat Cookbook
Average Reviews:

Everything -and I mean EVERYTHING- you need to know about meat: from where does it come from to how to carve it, this book is a complete marvel! Do not confuse it with any of those "barbecue bibles" that tell you stuff you either already know or couldn't care less (i.e. lots of no-brainer tips or cookout recipes for weekend grilling-chef dads). This is not a cookbook, this is a TREATISE (also very entertaining reading)!
This book is for experts, made by experts! It describes the animals, their meat, its flavors, textures and consistency, the cuts, their handling, the cooking techniques for each and everyone of them and, needless to say, some not-your-usual-dinner exotic international recipes that'll water your mouth (it even features "cochinita pibil"!).
Too bad it only covers beef, veal, pork and lamb! It should also include game! But ...nobody's perfect! All in all, A MUST!

Salad People and More Real Recipes: A New Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up
Average Reviews:

This cookbook is a real gem in the world of children's cookbooks. All of the kids' cookbooks I have seen in the past are heavily laden with sugar, chocolate, and more sugar. This one focuses on simple, healthy recipes such as "Cool Cucumber Soup" with cucumber, mint, honey, and yogurt; or "Foccacia" made with storebought pizza crust, olive oil, and rosemary.
The format is wonderful, with 2 pages for the adult to preread, followed by 2 pages of picture directions, simple enough for a 3 yr. old to "read."
I feel good about sharing these recipes with my kids (ages 5 and 3) and I don't have to worry about inducing a euphoric sugar high! My only complaint is that the kids aren't thrilled with most of the recipes... they took one sip of the cucumber soup and said, "Yuck!" They liked the foccacia but picked off the rosemary. But I will keep trying!

Maggie Oster's book has helped me in making the most tasty and beautiful herbal vinegars ever. I was stuck in the boring "chive blossom vinegar" or "Tarragon Vinegar" with no variations. After I followed a couple of Maggie's recipes, I livened up my meals immensely! Next, I'm going to try her "Dill-Burnet Cream Dressing" for my salad. It has only 5 ingredients, and they are very easy to find! This book discusses many different types of vinegars (malt, rice, cider, distilled, cane, etc), so I can decide which is best for the type of herbs I want to add. Have you ever tasted raspberry vinegar on a salad in a gourmet restaurant? It's in here! There are many recipes in this great book! Last year, I made Garlic, jalapeno, and black peppercorn vinegar, and my friends wanted the only bottle I made! This year, I'm making more to share.

The Best of America's Test Kitchen 2009: The Year's Best Recipes, Equipment Reviews, and Tastings (Best of America's Test Kitchen Cookbook: The Year's Best Recipes)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a little hesitant these days on rushing out to purchase each and every America's Test Kitchen cookbook. Some are spectacular while others are not of much use to everyday cooks like me. Here's a GREAT one:
The America's Test Kitchen Family Baking Book
...and here's a lame one:
Americas Best Lost Recipes: 121 heirloom recipes too good to forgetIf you've seen the PBS Television Program, "America's Test Kitchen," then you'll know why people are so attracted to their spin-off cookbooks. Program Host Christopher Kimball's mantra is, "We do the work so you don't have to." And they do. Their recipes are quite excellent, (but not necessarily "the very best" in all cases.)
For this cookbook, we're getting the "crème of the crop" of the organization's best 200 recipes from this past year. The editors have also included information from two of the program's popular cameo features, the culinary equipment reviews and, the "tasting" reviews.
Here are the book chapters:
1. Introduction
2. Starters & Salads
3. Soups & Stews
4. Vegetables & Side Dishes
5. Breakfast & Breads
6. Pasta
7. Meat
8. Poultry
9. Seafood
10. Desserts
11. Test Kitchen Resources
12. IndexI have tried a number of these down-to-earth recipes and they're just great. The average cook will find many old stand-bys in here (much improved in most instances) and a good number of innovative recipes which will spark the family's interest at the supper table.
I have only two so-so issues with this cookbook:
-- Due to some overkill in giving details on recipe background and in the recipe preparation(s), the font size is resultantly pretty darn small. You'll find it difficult to post this cookbook in your kitchen and then read along as you cook -- you'll need to squint your eyes.
-- In the tasting section, I found myself frequently disagreeing with the selections which have been recommended and thus, they do me little good. As an example, they recommend Prego Marinara Italian [pasta] Sauce, a product which practically makes me physically ill when I taste it. Conversely they do not recommend Classico Tomato & Basil Pasta Sauce, which is one of my big favorites. Whether I'm right or wrong is not the issue -- the fact is that we all have our preferences and these judgments are so very subjective from person to person that I question the value of including this section in the book. The equipment section (a version of consumer reports) is pretty spot-on, these items not being quite so dependent upon our personal likes and dislikes. With kitchen equipment, most folks seem to share their likes for the same good features. In fact, I bought the pepper mill that they recommended and I find that it suits me just fine.
The book, at 360 pages in length and 8 ½" x 11" x 1" in dimension, is very nicely bound with a rugged dust jacket. The pages are of heavy stock and you'll discover a profusion of helpful illustrations which mostly facilitate better culinary techniques. There are also lots of color photographs of the various completed dishes found throughout the book.
In summary, while this is not a foundational, general cookbook, it's still a great supplement to such works. Noting my minor reservations above, I can recommend it but you might want to check it out at the public library first, before buying, to see if it fits your personal needs.

101 Margaritas Review

101 Margaritas
Average Reviews:

I have a few different bar books because I love to throw parties. When we have a party, we put all our different liquors, mixers and garnishes on a table in the middle of the room. Then we make lots of coasters that have different drink recipes on them and let people make their own drinks. Not only does it make it easier for us the hosts, it encourages people at the party to talk to each other and compare drinks. This margarita book is perfect for that. We are having a party in two weeks and it may very well be a Margarita party with this book being the basis. The photography is gorgeous and I want to scan the images to make the coasters. Also, there are so many different colors of margaritas; if your party has a color theme, it is easy to pick out appropriate recipes. On top of that, the book is only $10.00. What a deal. I am happy to add it to my collection and with it's pretty cover, it will be facing outward on my bookshelf. And I highly recommend the Midori Margarita!
