A Man's Place Is Behind the Bar: Killer Cocktail Recipes

My husband loves this book and is happy to make cocktails for me from the many recipes, so I like it, too. The martini recipe (more a methodology than a recipe, I think) is really good. It's nice that it is laid out by type of liquor, so it makes it easy to figure out a good cocktail for whatever liquor you have on hand. Basic cocktail recipes, with variations for each one. A nice book to have around.

Good Spirits: Recipes, Revelations, Refreshments, and Romance, Shaken and Served with a Twist Review

Good Spirits: Recipes, Revelations, Refreshments, and Romance, Shaken and Served with a Twist

As a big fan of A.J. Rathbun's previous cocktail book, Party Drinks, I have to admit that I had high expectations for his comprehensive guide, Good Spirits. But as I cracked open the new book, I immediately knew that he had knocked this one out of the park. The recipes are easy to follow, and the descriptions make me want to shake, stir, and sip almost every drink in the book. (The mouthwatering photos in Good Spirits add to the attraction too!) But, most importantly, since this is a book about good times and good fun, A.J. has taken great care to make sure that the book itself is part of the joy of entertaining. Like the cocktails in the book, Good Spirits is perfectly mixed!

Infused: 100+ Recipes for Infused Liqueurs and Cocktails Review

Infused: 100+ Recipes for Infused Liqueurs and Cocktails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this book on a recent trip to Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon. I've made liqueurs in the past and this book rekindled my interest in this culinary hobby. One aspect that I especially like about this book is that most all of the infustion recipes can are adaptable to making infused spirits (sans sugar syrup) or liqueurs (sweet libations). Many of the recipes have variations. For instance, the Elderflower Liqueur recipe lists variations on adapting the recipe to create Lavender, Rose, or Violet liqueuers.
The book is very nicely designed and pictures of the liqueurs and the cocktails they enhance are likely to make your mouth water. (They did mine.)

Infused liqueurs are the hot new ingredients for cocktails. With more than 30 infusions plus dozens of drinks to use them in, Infused combines spirits like vodka and rum with fruits, flowers, herbs, and spices to create superior liqueurs. Take the Gibson and give it a kick with Onion Vodka. Cool down with Watermelon Martinis on warm summer days, or get the heat going with Hot Mint Chocolate spiked with Mind Vodka, a perfect antidote to cold winter nights. Many infusions pair with multiple recipes: herb-infused vodkas enliven both the Rosemary Martini and the Strawberry Basil Martini. Chocolate Vodka is the indulgence in the Chocolate Martini, Brandy Alexander, and the Grasshopper. The versatility of each infusion makes giving a bottle of homemade liqueur a unique gift for any drink connoisseur. With tips on how to shake, stir, and chill, and enough recipes and ideas to reinvent any party, this colorful little book is the ultimate infusion of fun.

Spice & Ice Review

Spice and Ice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quite an excellent reference for cocktails that are a little different. Well conceived.
Kara organizes these drink recipes by season (of the year) with the aim of showcasing fresh, seasonal ingredients. The "Wasabi-Tini" ushers in spring (a caveat: wasabi-ize with the utmost care). Summer's "Watermelon Hot" combines freshly pulsed watermelon with green Thai chilies to allay (or perhaps obliterate) the worst of those dog days. Autumn's "Mule Kick" is a variant of the "Moscow Mule," using jalapeño-infused Vodka. Winter's "Mexican Hot Chocolate" is a multi-step recipe but evidently worth the trouble: hot chocolate with Kahluá plus a half teaspoon of a "Mexican Spice Mix" composed of chili powder, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.
A good solid third of the book involves preparation and method, how to handle spices, spicy cocktail food pairings, and an especially eye-opening (if not eye-watering) section on how to make spice-infused liquors and syrups.
Extremely valuable.

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide Review

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Seagram's book is an OK book. It reminds me a lot of the Mr. Boston book. Unlike one of the reviewer's below I could not find "Caesar" in the book-maybe there is a newer addition than the 1995 version I have (although this seems to be the one that Amazon is selling). I also could not find some of the popular drinks like "Bellini" or "Caipirinha." I like the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide much better. Pulpfoto's review below says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide is A to Z like a dictionary so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. It seems pretty straight forward to me. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category.

The New York Bartender's Guide: 1300 Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes for the Professional and the Home Review

The New York Bartender's Guide: 1300 Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes for the Professional and the Home
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's be honest -- when it comes to mixed drinks, there's probably about two dozen that any bartender really needs to know, and although they drift in and out of popularity (I'm pretty sure there's a lot more caipirinhas and cosmos out there than old-fashioneds or rum flips), the top of the list isn't going to be very taxing on a bartender's memory. That, of course, is why we have bartender guides -- something that can be kept behind the bar next to the cash register in case a patron wants something that isn't that easy to remember.
This particular book is a nicely presented one, with color pictures and organized by spirit (with two indexes, one by drink, one by subject). I had some friends throw drink names at me and most of them came up in the book, so it's definitely got all the important ones. However, it is a rather conservative book -- apart from the fairly famous edgily-named ones like Sex on the Beach, a lot of the more twisted drinks I've heard of like the Apple F***er, the Adios Mother, and the Cement Mixer don't really show up in here, at least not under their real names. (You may have better luck with some of the more humorous ones like Bartending For Dummies or a shot book.)
Honestly there's nothing too terribly exciting going on in here, and for the most part it's probalby interchangeable with Mr. Boston or The Bartenders Black Book, or for that matter half a dozen other well-written, comprehensive bar guides. It's prettier than most bar books you'll find, with glossy pages and lots of color photography, so if you're the sort who likes to just browse things like this, it's an excellent choice for that. If you're in the market, try it out.

Sake: A Modern Guide Review

Sake: A Modern Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read many Sake guides over the years. Some leave me with lengthy, lengthy lists of sakes I'd like to try, if I could ever decipher the labels at my local Japanese liquor store. Most leave me even more confused than before I started reading. This book was the first I ever read where I walked away feeling like I could explain why I liked what I liked. But the best part of the book is the list of Sakes to try that are available in the US. Afterall, what's the point of a long list of exotic drinks to try if you're never going to be able to find them?

Click Here to see more reviews about: Sake: A Modern Guide

Sake is hot, hot, hot (though the best are actually served cold). It's the hippest sip at the cocktail hour and, as the sommeliers will tell you, can be a delicious accompaniment to food. This fun and informative guide demystifies an age-old wine and explains the many types of sake and how to properly taste their complex flavors. Beau Timken's foolproof TasteMatch system profiles 50 suggested sakes and provides their beer and wine flavor equivalents, creating a simple-yet-effective resource for finding a perfect match. Plus, recipes for 30 sake cocktails and 15 sake-friendly dishes make sake appropriate for any occasion (try a refreshing glass of Sake Sangria, or surprise guests by pairing sake with Fettuccine with Shiitake Mushrooms and Pancetta). There's even a section on planning and hosting a sake-tasting party to share your newfound sake expertise. A contemporary look at a traditional drink, Sake captures 1,000 years of culture and updates it for the modern lifestyle. Kanpai!

The Ultimate Little Martini Book (Ultimate Little Drinks Book) Review

The Ultimate Little Martini Book (Ultimate Little Drinks Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Whether you just want a crisp cool drink to sip while on your deck, or are planning a party with tons of martini glasses to be filled, it's a great "go-to" book. We, personally, like to plan a gathering where we serve a "signature drink" when it's BYOB for a big bash and the focus is on food, as everyone gets to enjoy their own cocktail if they want, but try something new as well if they'd rather have that. This provides tons of options for a signature party drink or 1000.
It's a plus that name brands are suggested for each recipe, when needed. For example, if Finlandia Vodka is preferred in a certain recipe, that is noted, while Skyy Vodka may be the preference in another. Of course, you can use what you have at home instead, but I appreciate that they aren't plugging one certain brand in the book and really think about brand preference if it does matter to you. I don't always follow it...but it's there.
The book is set up alphabetically by drink name and they aren't just recipes from the author...the book is full of signature drinks from bars and restaurants that have a popular drink as well.
It's a little book and very thick...interspersed with cartoons featuring the martini.
I rarely look for a certain drink in the book...it's a tad more fun to just go through it and find something new to try...thus far, whatever we've tried we have enjoyed.
Conclusion: If it's a martini recipe, odds are it's in here. Simple recipes that are easy to follow from traditional to exotic.

Organic, Shaken and Stirred: Hip Highballs, Modern Martinis, and Other Totally Green Cocktails Review

Organic, Shaken and Stirred: Hip Highballs, Modern Martinis, and Other Totally Green Cocktails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Step One: Where to find the organic liquors: If you wanna go green and your liquor store does not want you to: As some reviews note that they aren't familiar with a few of the organic brands listed, it should be noted that all brand names and even suggestions of where to track 'em down are in the foreward for the book under the section: "Everything you need to know to build a green bar." But, as the author notes, these are suggestions. If you want to use what you have on hand and go organic part of the time, the recipes are solid enough in taste and preparation that you'll still enjoy the recipes until your order for, say, Vodka 14 arrives from its organic distillary...BUT, that said, ask your local liquor store first. We found our liquor store was happy to order us some organic Vodka as well as tequila, and that another one slightly further from us already stocked them both. So even if you are in an area with little access to organic liquors, with the internet or a friendly request, you may have the same luck as us trying out some great recipes. Where to find any other organic ingredients listed? Read the notes on every recipe and the author will tell you...such as with one recipe that suggests tamarind concentrate (for a very exotic drink) tells us to find it at an Indian food specialty store, an all-natural grocery store, or on the internet. But there are plenty of recipes with nothing exotic so don't let the unique ones scare you off--they just add interest to the book and help you create one-of-a-kind mixers you'd never see otherwise on days you feel like dabbling in a new taste.
Why It Matters: While taste, in my opinion, is greater with organic liquors, the cost follows suit. But anyone going organic knows that this is the norm. Reason being that without synthetic insecticides, and artificial ingredients to maintain freshness longer than is natural, farmers and manufacturers are going to lose more of their crop/ingredients used in distributing their organic product-- whether food or alcohol. Giving new meaning to the phrase "drinking responsibly", an organic cocktail drinker may choose to do so do avoid insecticides and harmful sprays shown to be detrimental to their bodies and the environment, to support sustainable farming and/or to encourage enviromentally repsponsible packaging. But, in the end, taste is what one remembers in the first sip so regardless of your motive...that is key. And in my opinion, the author pulls through...
Choose Your Mood: Feeling Fresh & Zesty? Lush & Fruity? Clean & Classic? Wanna Play in the Garden or Invite Friends Over for Punch in a Pitcher? There is a section for each. You choose and pick a recipe to suit your taste.
Fresh & Zesty was my favorite section. Formerly a lover of mimosas, I enjoyed the author's suggestion to utilize grapefruit juice instead so as not to smother the taste of the champagne--and to utilize the grapefruit juice's acidity and more refined sweetness in combination with tequila and elderflower liquor to create a phenomenal new brunch sensation.
"Coming in Hot" is a favorite new drink, but, as a Texan, its sweet and hot taste is particularly pleasing to my Tex/Mex palette. It combines strawberries, a small zip of jalapeno chilis, agave nectar, lemon juice and tequila to take your mama's margarita into a modern sensation.
The saffron margarita is a new taste sensation as well, combining tequila, contreau, lime juice, mango puree made from mango chunks, agave nectar, and saffron threads for an orange/red sweet and tart margarita.
Of course, organic suggestions of all of the above ingredients are noted.
Lest it be assumed all drinks are as exotic as the above, know that the book also has recipes for still unique, but not quite so exotic: prickly pear mojito, organic agave margarita, lavender lemon drop, Harvey Wallbanger version 2.0, all natural bellini, etc.
Few recipes are "old school" recipes with simply new organic ingredients. Most have a gourmet twist so that even if you decide to use non-organic ingredients to save money on occasion, you won't be scrimping on discovering new tastes within your mixology.
Kentucky Christmas is a great suggestion for cocktails prior to Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner for the adult household...or even a holiday party. You muddle organic cranberries then simply add cranberry juice and bourbon. We have also made this with frozen cranberries and it's crisp and fresh enough for summer parties on the porch and festive enough for winter celebrations--but could not be any easier to prepare.
The recipes aren't hard to do and are unique enough that they are actually fun to try...the taste combos are wonderfully paired in my opinion.
Look: As the other reviewers noted, this is just a gorgeous book with beautifully done full-color photos and color throughout the book, including divider pages and fonts. Even if you left this on a coffee table, it would serve well. Heck, the photos are so well done that you almost wanna tear em out and frame em! (this is coming from an artist. But I think anyone would notice this aspect of the book.) The beauty of the book helps make it a good gift for your organically inclined family member or neighbor, I think it would be safe to say...Well, so long as they drink.
Negatives: It's rare that anyone would have their bar well-stocked enough to simply open this book and begin creating scores of recipes. To truly go organic in every recipe, you will need to do some bar stocking. If you don't want to order anything off the internet then it's best, in order to create many recipes, that you have an all-natural grocery nearby such as Whole Foods or Central Market, in order to create some of the more exotic recipes that may call for organic ingredients such as organic lemon juice. But, with such shopping trips, you'll be able to take old school cocktails like "spiked lemonade" to new-age ones such as "spiked blueberry-thyme lemonade". And the tastes are unique and worth it to us--and living in Austin made the ingredients easy for us to locate. However, there were some recipes that were also seasonal due to the ingredients, so this should be kept in mind as well. Organic drinking is no different than eating...it takes extra effort but only the reader can decide if this is worth it or if they have the stores near them to allow them to access organic ingredients to make the book worth it. If not, however, they are still sure to find some unique new takes on classic faves.

Boozehound: On the Trail of the Rare, the Obscure, and the Overrated in Spirits Review

Boozehound: On the Trail of the Rare, the Obscure, and the Overrated in Spirits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I think if I died and was reincarnated I would want to come back as Jason Wilson. That man has a job of traveling to drink and write about various distilled spirits, what a gig! The nice thing is that author realizes he is pretty lucky to be a "Lifestyle Journalist" and he doesn't take himself too seriously.
This book "Boozehound," comes off as part memoir, part travel log, part spirits review and part cocktail recipe book. And in all those things it makes for a fun read. Wilson takes on a trip through his past while commenting on learning to taste and understand the flavors in spirits. He discusses cocktail snobs, searching for lost spirits and liqueurs, the great stories (True or not) behind many beloved alcohol brands, the world of Italian bitter drinks, a whole chapter on aquavit, terroir and its effect on spirits, and much more.
At the end of each chapter the author always gives out a handful of cocktail recipes, which are neither recipes that you have seen a hundred times before or amazingly complex examples of molecular mixology. They are just straightforward recipes that use the ingredients discussed in the proceeding chapter and out of the ones I have made they have been pretty good.
So while this book seems to cross many genres, part cocktail history book, alcoholic travel log, spirit critique and tasting notes, humor, and personal history I found it an enjoyable read; I learned a lot and had a great time reading it. If you are interested in this kind of stuff then you will like the book too, and if you have a friend or family member who enjoys the history and stories behind different spirits, then I think they may like this book to. I recommend it.
