My husband and I went to Tahiti for our honeymoon. I saw this book on Amazon.com and I just had to have it. The pictures, facts and drinks were amazing!
I decided to have a Tahitian party last weekend with my family and friends. I was able to recreate the Tahitian cocktails we had on our honeymoon and share some interesting facts about the islands, as well as, the hotels in the French Polynesia. The cocktails were so easy to make and they looked so festive. I was able to recreate the look of the cocktail by using the pictures in the book. Everyone at my party kept raving about how much they loved what they were drinking and wanted to see the Tahitian cocktail book. After looking at the book - they just had to have a copy. I was so excited about their requests, I can order this book on-line and have it shipped to my home just in time for Christmas. I do not have to "fight" the crowds at the mall! My party was a huge Tahitian success!
If you want to bring the French Polynesia Islands to your home and experience paradise - I highly recommend this book. Thank you for making my party festive and memorable!!!

The Art of Shen Ku: The First Intergalactic Artform of the Entire Universe Review

The Art of Shen Ku: The First Intergalactic Artform of the Entire Universe

Imagine, if you will, that you are in the company of a man who has travelled the world, seen many things that are NOT in the guidebooks, been in the company of many people both great and small, taken a lot of hard knocks, learned much to prevent repeating any mistakes, and lived to tell about it.
This is the book he wrote.
Equal parts Boy Scout Handbook, Whole Earth Catalogue and "Junior Woodchuck Guidebook" (the impossably complete reference book that Donald Duck's nephews carried with them), with painstakingly detailed illustrations on each and every page, tinted with Oriental wisdom.
Just a sampling of the contents (with randomly chosen pages): "Asian secrets of walking stick combat", "A traveler's guide to self-hypnosis", "Rapid reference accupressure treatments", "Emergency entertainment for bored, whining or fighting kids", "Effective beauty treatments with simple natural ingredients", "How to survive disaster situations", "How to condition for martial art strikes", "Non-violent child control", "Simple and healthy vegetarian recipes", "How to execute classic Kung Fu moves".
My friend, this is the one! From boating emergencies to avoiding a fight, from preventing food poisoning to physical fitness information, from natural therapies to preventing bedwetting, from Laws of the Sea to preventing skin problems, from tying knots to yoga postures....
I cannot say enough about this book. Buy it. Better yet, buy two and hide one copy. Someone is bound to "borrow" this from you.
(ADDENDUM: I sent a copy to a friend of mine. He has paid me to send him four additional copies to give away as presents.)

Why Do Men Have Nipples? Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini Review

Why Do Men Have Nipples Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini
Average Reviews:

"Why Do Men Have Nipples?" was big fun. I have to admit having had some of the sillier questions take up space in my head for years. You aren't going to find answers to life or definitive information on the origin of the universe here, just some of the more interesting facts we can't live without. This book had me laughing out loud, sometimes at the questions, sometimes because the question was ever asked in the first place. I am proud to say I already knew why your teeth chatter in the cold or with a fever (body trying to warm up) and sucking the poison from a snake bite wasn't such a good idea. I didn't know the average desk in the average workplace could kill you with the amount of germs and bacteria outnumbering those on the toilet seat. Think hand sanitizer for stocking stuffers this year!! There are hundreds more interesting and sometimes strange facts I didn't know but the team of Goldberg and Leyner has now educated me to the level of expert. I am not sure if that's something to be proud of or not but I laughed and laughed hard while reading "Why Do Men Have Nipples?" and I suggest it to anyone who might be tempted to accost a doctor outside of his office for answers to some of the more pressing questions you have about the human body. Recommended highly!

Show Me How: 500 Things You Should Know Instructions for Life From the Everyday to the Exotic Review

Show Me How: 500 Things You Should Know Instructions for Life From the Everyday to the Exotic

I was delighted to find this little book at the store yesterday, and we decided over coffee to buy a couple of copies for presents. Lots and lots of illustrations and a wide variety of projects:
How to make the perfect bed
Tell time with a potato clock
A color coordinating wheel
Treat a snake bite
Tie basic sailing knots
Twist a balloon animals
Get out of a straight jacket
The authors run the Curiosity Shoppe in San Francisco, recently reviewed by "The New York Times": "You'll see fashionable, do-it-yourself types foraging for clever, handmade crafts at this shop in the Mission District. It carries items like coffee holders knitted from yarn, deer heads carved out of wood and skeleton keys fashioned out of porcelain."
This book would be fun to look through with kids, but it is actually written for adults. The website for the book (see the first Comment) is fast, graphic and very descriptive of the contents of the book. It will sell it to you [or not] with no further ado.

Mini Cupcakes Review

Mini Cupcakes
Average Reviews:

The recipes were easy to follow and tasted good. It was also fun to decorate the mini-cupcakes. The only trouble I had was finding 2oz souffle cups. Wilton makes a 2 INCH cup, but that was WAY to big. I finally had to order the 2 ounce souffle cups from an online baking supply company. I got 500 of them for $13 (shipping included)and that should last me quite a while.
My only complaint is that when I bake the cupcakes the tend to come out a little dry. I live at high altitude, so that might be part of the problem.

Jelly Shot Test Kitchen: Jell-ing Classic Cocktails-One Drink at a Time
Average Reviews:

I had made a couple of Jelly Shot Test Kitchen recipes before from their blog and they have always turned out well. I am excited to have such a wide variety of shots now at my disposal - there's one for almost every occasion. Most of these recipes are pretty much idiot-proof, and are rated according to their difficulty as well. A fun, bright, and cheery layout make this a lovely book just to own and leave out for perusal. There's a large picture for every jelly shot, which only cause your mouth to water as you flip through. I have already made the Melon shots and they were yummy. Since I don't like to cook much, I find these a great alternative to take to a party or get together. They are a hit! Highly recommended.

Bake Sale Cookbook Review

Bake Sale Cookbook
Average Reviews:

I saw Sandra Lee baking recipes from this book on a morning show this week, so I thought I'd try it out. There are gorgeous photos of every dessert, so the presentations look like they are ready for a bake sale. If you bake from scratch you may not like her shortcuts using prepared mixes and some ready made icings, BUT this book is a winner even just to learn good presentations or get ideas for your own recipes from scratch. The little details she does make her presentations beautiful.
I am not a great cook, and I need the pictures of what the final product should look like, so I love this book. Colorful, cheerful, easy for any cook, and includes baking tips to make the baked goods come out looking really irresistible.
Directions, time needed, yield, and ingredients are all laid out very simply, so you can see if you have the time and have the ingredients on hand for a recipe.
There are cookies, brownies, bars, cakes, cupcakes, fruits, candies, pies, truffles, and breads. She has a section showing "cookiescapes" and how to make small theme baskets for bake sales and holidays.
Here are just a few of the recipes I found unique: Pear & Cinnamon Charlotte, Butter Toffee Flower Sandwiches, Root Beer Cupcakes, Cream Marzipan Cake, White Chocolate Macadamia Cake, Custard Filled Cake, Plum Apricot Clafouti, Caramel Apple Muffin Melts, Triple Blueberry Pie, and Rocky Road Parfaits. Plenty for both children and adults to love!
I'm off to the kitchen. Two thumbs up from my house. This is a soft cover book, but still very nice to give as a gift.

The Breakfast Book Review

The Breakfast Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This durable classic was written by one of the better known names among American cookbook authors, who apprenticed with James Beard and supervised the rewrite of the Fannie Farmer cookbook. The book endures by providing a super coverage of a neglected culinary subject. While there are dozens of books with chapters on breakfast dishes, there are only a small handful of books devoted exclusively to breakfast written in the last 20 years. This book, neatly typeset, edited, and designed by the Alfred A. Knopf crew, should grace your shelf for a long time, even if your space is limited.
This book among my favorite types of cookbooks to own, as it gives you easy access to a great number of recipes on a single subject. This is even better than books on fish or red meat or potatoes or chicken, as it covers a wide range of recipes for all flavors available to a single meal. And, Ms. Cunningham does touch all the bases. Her chapter titles are:
Yeast breads such as American White Bread.
Toasts, French Toast, and Breakfast Sandwiches.
Quick Breads such as biscuits, cornbread, scones, muffins, and fruit breads.
Cereals, hot such as oatmeal and corn, such as granola
Doughnuts and Fritters
Griddling, as in pancakes and waffles
Eggs, as in boiled, omelets, frittatas, souffles, baked, scrambled, poached, fried, and so on
Fruit Fixing, as in applesauce, poached apples, stuffed pears, fresh juices, rhubarb, pineapple, mango, etc.
Potatoes, as in oven fries, hash browns, potato pancakes, potato bacon pie, and potato custard
Meat and Fish as in steak, chipped beef, corned beef hash, bacon, ham, fresh fish, fish hash, and salt cod
Custards and Puddings, an extension of eggs or cereals, depending on how you look at them
Cookies, Pies, and Cakes as in yum, yum, cookies for breakfast
Condiments, as in jellies, jams, caramel, syrups, and salsas
Breakfast Beverages as in tea, coffee, hot chocolate ya da ya da ya da
Breakfast Menus
Some reviewers have stated that her recipes are easy. While this may be true of most topics above, it is not true of yeast breads. Even the simplest recipes, and Cunningham's are relatively simple, require a modest amount of skill and a fair amount of time, so I must say that Cunningham is more concerned with good recipes and completeness than she is with speed.
While Miss Marion covers all the bases, some are covered a lot better than others. The yeast bread chapter has only a few samples and an exceptionally picky person may feel that the book suffers by not having a brioche recipe, as this is a perfect ingredient for French Toast. I will only point this out and generally suggest that if you are serious about making bread, check out either `Baking with Julia' as an excellent general introduction to baking or Rose Levy Beranbaum's `The Bread Bible' for the straight skinny on everything bread. For the very best Southern biscuits, check out Nick Malgieri's `How to Bake'.
The coverage of eggs and toast and condiments and cakes and custards and puddings and pancakes is terrific. This represents the strongest reason to own a copy of this book, if you are especially fond of leisurely weekend breakfasts or brunches. There are dozens of recipes for things I knew people did actually eat for breakfast, but never came close to having them myself or even seeing them on restaurant menus.
As with the bread and biscuit recipes, do not believe Ms. Cunningham has absolutely covered all bases in chapters such as Meats and Beverages. She does not always cover the most common recipe for a dish. A perfect example is her creamed chipped beef recipe that includes mushrooms. A classic recipe would not include mushrooms and would include Worcestershire sauce and a little cayenne.
This aside, this book packs an enormous punch with 288 recipes for a list price of $20 and an Amazon discounted price of $14.
Very highly recommended, especially for a modest budget and a big appetite for big breakfasts.
