Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes Review

Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a cookbook collection that exceeds five hundred titles. Ten of my books are from Pillsbury and I have never been disappointed. When I received a card from Pillsbury announcing the newest in their collection, I immediately ordered it.
Pillsbury and the slow cooker are a great match. The recipes are easy to put together with ingredients that you probably have on hand or are readily available, and what could be easier than cooking in a slow cooker? I have already prepared several of the recipes and I am looking forward to trying more of them. The Turkey and Bacon Wild Rice Casserole was a big hit. Hearty Steak and Tater Soup brought ooh's and aah's at work too. The slow cooker is particularly good with lean cuts of beef. For this, try Beef Brisket with Cranberry Gravy or Carmelized Onion Pot Roast. Actually try them BOTH as they are scrumptious!
For readers new to using a slow cooker, Pillsbury shares ten 'secrets' for using the appliance successfully. There are five sections in the book covering main dishes, poultry, soups, stews and chiles, sandwiches and vegetables and side dishes. There are 140 recipes in total and many have illustrations. Each recipe is accompanied by Nutritional Information and a sidebar offering tips and serving suggestions.
Although a bit smaller than some of the other books in the collection, the Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes is outstanding in quality. It's a big hit in my kitchen...it will be one of your favorites as well!!

In today's fast-paced world, convenience is a key ingredient to any good recipe. With Pillsbury Doughboy Slow-Cooker Recipes—and a little bit of planning ahead—you can serve savory meals that took "hours" to cook and still have time to spend with your family. For success in your kitchen, the Pillsbury Kitchens have double-tested each recipe in various slow cookers. Check out the introduction, which is packed with helpful information, from how to adapt your favorite recipes to food safety and cooking at high altitude. And, with more than sixty mouthwatering color photographs, you can almost smell the wonderful aromas! There's a reason these are called "fix-and-forget" recipes. The recipes require minimal, easy preparation, and while you spend the day in class, at work, running errands, or driving carpool, the slow cooker does all the work. When you come home, a bubbling, fragrant, one-pot meal is ready and waiting! And the slow cooker is useful all year round—in the warmer months, this small appliance won't heat up your entire kitchen the way an oven does. You'll find chapters starting with Meaty Main Dishes, like Caramelized Onion Pot Roast, and ending with Very Easy Vegetables and Sides, like family-favorite Au Gratin Potatoes and Onion. In between are Busy-Day Chicken and Turkey, with recipes like Thai Peanut Chicken, which is great for casual entertaining; Super Soups, Stews and Chilies, including Spicy Vegetarian Chili; and Slow-Cooked Sandwiches, like So-Easy Sloppy Joes. With this much variety, you are certain to please everyone in the family. Each of the 140 easy-to-follow recipes includes a useful sidebar with a tip for serve-with items, suggestions on how the kids can help, or ideas to make it special. Set the table, whip up a fast salad or side dish, if you like, and sit down with your family to a real home-cooked meal. When a hot, hearty meal is what's needed, Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes is just the ticket!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Slow Cooker Cooking Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Slow Cooker Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've always found the Complete Idiot's Guides to be a mixed-bag; some I liked and some I didn't. This one, I liked very much! This book claims to have over 220 recipes, and I believe it, there are too many to count. First off, the book is organized into seven sections - 1) A Fast Course in Slow Cooking (a good quick start), 2) Enticing Appetizers, 3) Satisfying Soups, 4) Stews to Savor, 5) Crock Around the Clock (main courses), 6) Healthful but Homey (seafoods, vegetarian and others), and 7) Grand Finales (desserts). Each of the recipes comes complete with estimates on preparation and cooking time plus number of servings, list of ingredients, step-by-step directions, and some extra little hints and warnings.
My wife and I found this to be a nice book, with easy to read and understand instructions. So far, we have tried to Chicken Paprikash, and Short Ribs with Rosemary - both of which were excellent. So, if you are also on the go, and want to use some slow cooking to save time, then get this book!

The Fishes & Dishes Cookbook: Seafood Recipes and Salty Stories from Alaska's Commercial Fisherwomen Review

The Fishes and Dishes Cookbook: Seafood Recipes and Salty Stories from Alaska's Commercial Fisherwomen
Average Reviews:

One of the most unique seafood cookbooks ever. The book is full of creative diverse recipe's plus amazing tales of adventure. From fishing crab on one of the smallest boats in the dangerous waters of the Bering Sea, to longlining for black cod and halibut, and tendering in beautiful Southeast Alaska, these intrepid women have nearly done it all.
This cookbook covers all the basics, but goes much further by adding information about fishing methods, superstitions, salmon basics, food and wine pairings, nautical drinks and seafood sustainability. When you add the beautiful photos and personal stories, it creates a seafood cookbook unlike any other.
Highly recommended!

The women featured in this book successfully challenged one of the last frontiers of male domination - the commercial fishing grounds of Alaska. A generation ago, they might have been celebrated as pioneers. In today's world they were simply living their dreams. They worked every job, from captain to cook and in nearly every northern fishery, even the Bering Sea king crab grounds made infamous by TV's Deadliest Catch. They share eighty mouth-watering seafood recipes and many funny and harrowing stories of their adventures. Tempting dishes such as Seafood and Sausage Gumbo and Smoked Salmon and Egg Salad Sandwiches are practical and unpretentious. Pacific Rim flavors infuse recipes such as Seafood Enchiladas or Salmon Dumplings with Coconut Curry Sauce. And filling feasts could include Thai Clam Chowder and Linguine with Mussels and Cider, Bacon, and Shallot Cream Sauce. These dishes are fresh, original, and surprising easy to make. Your taste buds will never be the same! Also inside: Tips for cleaning, preserving, and preparing fish; how to pair wine with seafood; a glossary of commercial fishing terms; an explanation of fishing methods; on-board fashion tips; and information about sustainability.

Char-Broil's Everybody Grills Review

Char-Broil's Everybody Grills
Average Reviews:

I bought this cookbook to help my husband learn how to use of the features on his new grill, eg the rotisserie and the infrared searing burner. There was some information on these, so I was happy. However, many of the recipes are unnecessarily vague regarding cooking times, as many new grills have thermometers, and surface thermometers are also available. It is one of the better grill cookbooks out there, however, so even with its faults, I would recommend it.

The Gluten-free Gourmet Makes Dessert: More Than 200 Wheat-free Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Pies and Other Sweets Review

The Gluten-free Gourmet Makes Dessert: More Than 200 Wheat-free Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Pies and Other Sweets
Average Reviews:

Those of us following a gluten-free diet often feel something akin to claustrophobia when it comes to food. Every day we're faced with so many goodies that we can't have. It's a great comfort to have a resource like this one at home when you walk past the bakery section of your local grocery store. Just knowing you *can* go home and bake something sweet and tasty
opens up your world a little.
And these recipes do work; some are complex, many are very simple, which means the book answers a range of cook's skills.
While it is true that the recipes are based on mixes made from a wide range of sometimes exotic flours -- usually available through an American health food store -- it's not fair to condemn any of Bette's books for this. You're just not likely to find most gluten-free flours for cheap in your grocery store, at least not this early in the millennium.
My 11-year-old daughter has adopted this book as her kitchen companion. She turned out a wonderful cake on her first try. For those of you with children stuck with a gluten-free diet for life, there is no more essential skill to pass on to them than cooking -- and no better passion than a love of cooking -- that will support them through a lifetime on a specialized diet. This book makes a great starting place for cooking with kids, as well as being a suitable cookbook for adults of all skill levels.

Homemade Christmas: Tried & true recipes, heartwarming memories and easy ideas for savoring the best of Christmas. Review

Homemade Christmas: Tried and true recipes, heartwarming memories and easy ideas for savoring the best of Christmas.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the book's main focus is as a cookbook with over 175 recipes, it also includes a small Handmade section with gift ideas along with a chapter to aid in Creating Christmas Memories.
For those unfamiliar with the ongoing series, the books are compilations of favorite recipes sent in by readers. The preparation times and skill levels range from easy to advanced, but the majority of the recipes are created by busy people who effectively squeeze holiday cooking, baking and entertaining into a schedule packed with life's other daily obligations. So, if you want to make crescent rolls or caramels from scratch, recipes are in the book, but so are plenty of recipes that include just a few ingredients, that can be whipped up with little notice or difficulty.
I tried the recipe for Festive Cranberry Salsa and it was delicious with corn chips. The Candied Maple Walnuts were a nice twist on the usual sweet nuts with maple syrup, brown sugar, salt, pepper and cinnamon as main ingredients. And, the Easy Salmon Spread was quick and tasty.
The chapters are Creating Christmas Memories, Cozy Morning Brunch, Simmering Soups and More, Warm & Welcoming Suppers, Farmhouse Christmas Dinner, Old-Fashioned Desserts, Cookie Jar Classics, Homemade Sweets to Share, Gathering with Friends and Handmade from the Heart. There are no photographs, but there are charming illustrations. The paper will unfortunately absorb spills, so using a cookbook holder would be a good idea if that is a concern. The spiral binding is ideal for keeping the book open on any page.
This book is a good gift for someone with little time to cook or prepare for the holidays, along with the fans of the series.

Miss Vickie's Big Book of Pressure Cooker Recipes Review

Miss Vickie's Big Book of Pressure Cooker Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am really enjoying this book. It has a lot of information on cooking all different food types in the pressure cooker as well as tips to ensure success. (When reading, I recognized some of my previous cooking errors.) There are comprehensive pressure cooking time charts and information for multi-level cooking as well as real variety in the recipes . They predominantly call for fresh and easy-to-find ingredients.
I wanted to address the low-rating reviews that recommended Lorna Sass's books over this one. I own two Lorna Sass books: while they are quality cookbooks and do include more recipes for vegetables and grains, there is information in Miss Vickie's cookbook that does not appear in Lorna Sass's. I do understand that people's needs and preferences are different, but there is much in this book to recommend to all pressure cooker users.
There may be other motives in some reviews in which Miss Vickie's book is not accurately represented. I used to visit a pressure cooking forum on Vegsource (a vegetarian website). One day, Miss Vickie posted in response to a question on that forum and was attacked by other members of the site because she has meat-based recipes on her own website. When I quietly reported this to the moderator, hoping to have the offending post removed, I was banned from the site. Lorna Sass is heavily promoted on this site because she has written a book for vegetarian pressure cooking (although, paradoxically, she authored several other books containing numerous meat recipes). This experience has colored my view of some of the negative postings.

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens) Review

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens)
Average Reviews:

Of the 400+ pages only 190 of them are of any use to me. I use a crockpot because it is simple and tasty cooking. So, I was expecting alot of main dish recipies. And I was also expecting them all to be for the crockpot. There is over 60 pages of recipes that do not use the crockpot. There is over 125 pages dedicated to beverages, soups, breads, and desserts. I have never met anyone who has made hot chocolate or apple bread in a crockpot. Of the 190 pages of worth. only 25 pages were the type of recipies that I was looking for. ie. the chop-it up and throw it in the pot type. everything else involved browning or braising or some other type of stove technique. I guess I'm just the kind of cook who doesn't want to screw around with browning anything. I bought this specifically because of the reviews on amazon. Hopefully this review will speak to those of you like me that are not chefs and are just looking for something easy and tasty to cook.

Slow Cooker Revolution Review

Slow Cooker Revolution
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The "new" name is "slow cooker" but most of us know the device as a "crockpot" because that's the name it was first marketed under a couple of decades ago. If you're like me, you got one because you thought, "Hey, I can put in the ingredients in the morning and have a tasty meal when I get home from work - cool". Then you found out that only certain recipes seemed to work well in the crockpot, er, slow cooker. You bought crockpot cookbooks, and found while many of them were beautifully designed with multiple and elaborate fonts, blank spaces for notes, line drawings of cute little collections of vegetables, the recipes either contained about 20 different ingredients or else the recipe required so much pre-browning, pre-sautéing, post-blending, post-broiling of the ingredients that it would just be quicker to cook the darn recipe once you got home from work.
I am really happy to say that "Slow Cooker Revolution" is the first sensible slow cooker cookbook in my collection of them. The book is very well designed. There is a page devoted to each recipe, and most recipes have a picture of the finished product. There is a list of ingredients, and from what I saw, everything there is available in my local supermarket. Each recipe starts off with a paragraph entitled, "Why It Works", in which the authors explain the choices behind certain ingredients or methods and why they work better than others. The recipes are clear-cut and easy to follow. Each recipe also an additional segment - either a "quick prep tip" or a "smart shopping" hint or an "on the side" short recipe. They also recommend products in these segments that have been determined to be the best in their other test processes (if you've ever watched "America's Test Kitchen" on PBS you'll know the tests I'm talking about); I like that they name names of the products.
As I read through the recipes, I found myself thinking, "that sounds really tasty" and more importantly, "I can do that". The recipes include both standards and favorites, you know, the kind of food that you would actually cook at home (or order in a favorite restaurant) and that your family would actually eat. The recipes are not just reprints of older crockpot recipes; they have reworked some basics and created totally new versions of others. There is not a lot of elaborate pre-preparation in these recipes. Sensibly, they recommend using the microwave to pre-cook some of the vegetables to both make sure they'll cook thoroughly in the recipe and to release more of the aromatics into the recipe. We're talking like five minutes in the microwave, so that's no big hardship. Some of the recipes do call for browning or sautéing certain meats or vegetables; I suppose there is no real way to avoid that since the name of the game is adding flavor to a process whose innate nature would tend to lose the flavor of some ingredients due to the long cooking time. There are a number of recipes highlighted as "Easy Prep" - they are the ones that are basically "throw everything into the slow cooker and turn it on".
What I also like about this cookbook are the extras, the pages that highlight things you should know about the ingredients you're using, e.g. "All About Broths", "Pasta 101", "All About Beef", "All About Using The Microwave And The Slow Cooker", etc. Very useful. This cookbook is definitely going to be a keeper for me, and I might be buying some other copies for the other cooks in my family. This is a good and useful gifting item.

Who doesn't like the idea of throwing ingredients into a slow cooker and coming back hours later to a finished meal? Too bad most slow cooker recipes deliver mediocre results you'd rather forget than fix again. A team of ten test cooks at America's Test Kitchen spent a year developing recipes, and what they discovered will change the way you use your slow cooker. Did you know that onions garlic, and spices should be bloomed in the microwave for five minutes before they go into the slow cooker? This simple step intensifies their flavor and requires no extra work. Did you know that a little soy sauce mixed with tomato paste adds meaty flavors to almost any stew and can often replace the tedious step of browning the meat? And do you know the secret to a moist slow-cooker chicken? Start the bird upside down to protect the delicate white meat from drying out. The 200 recipes in this family-friendly collection deliver a revolution in slow cooking like only America's Test Kitchen can!

Make It Fast, Cook It Slow: The Big Book of Everyday Slow Cooking Review

Make It Fast, Cook It Slow: The Big Book of Everyday Slow Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I stumbled across Stephanie's cooking blog and ordered myself her book for Christmas (as a gift from my husband!) I was really excited about trying out her recipes--and especially thought it was cool that she writes a verdict after many of the recipes stating her opinion. I found her writing to be witty and appreciated her sense of humor. On Christmas day I scoured through the book, selecting some recipes to try--I chose recipes based off of my taste preferences as well as her positive reviews of them.
I tried the Brown Sugar Chicken (pg. 244) which she raves about. My family ate it, but didn't particularly enjoy it. It was very sweet (which she says it is)--but there wasn't really any depth of flavor (maybe it needed a couple bay leaves or some other herbs?) it tasted just like sugary chicken. I realize that taste is very subjective and many people may enjoy this dish, we however did not.
Next up I tried the Breakfast Risotto (pg. 48). She also raves about this dish. I will agree that the aroma was delectable. The spices were a very good combination, my complaint was that the texture was goopy. I made the recipe exactly as printed and I also got a little curdling (from the 2% milk???) which looked unappealing. This dish may actually work out if cooked on the stove top, but I don't think the recipe fared well in the crock pot.
Then I decided to try out the Hot and Spicy Artichoke Dip (pg. 30) to bring to a New Year's Eve party. Again, her verdict on the recipe is very positive. I made the recipe exactly as printed (there's only 4 ingredients!)--when it was done and I give it a taste it was BLAND. Blah. I attempted to salvage the dip by adding some black pepper, Worcestershire sauce and garlic. But it still wasn't right, way too thick and still a little bitter tasting. Well, we take it to the party anyways (maybe it's just us who thinks it tastes gross?)--and at the end of the party (30-40 people in attendance), the dip has barely been touched. It really was not good. At this point the recipes are 0 for 3. I decide to check out her blog to see what others thought of this particular recipe. To my annoyance her rave review written in the book was not the same as the one written on her blog. The review written in her book is actually in reference to the artichoke dip sold at Costco, NOT the one I just made. I felt that this is incredibly misleading, which is why I am only rating the book 2 stars.
The only recipe which has been a "keeper" for me is the Salsa Chicken and Black Bean Soup (pg. 206) It's very very good (didn't add the mushrooms and didn't thicken it).
IN SUMMARY:
If you purchase this book, know that you are purchasing a book full of recipes which have been TRIED by the author. I do not believe that the author fine-tuned/tweaked/perfected the recipes. Not all of the recipes have a verdict, and I wonder if those are even worth making since the author didn't rave about them. There are a whole lot of recipes and I am sure there are some "keepers" amongst them that will make it into your meal rotation. If you have the patience and resources to test out the various recipes then this is a book for you. If you are like me (a busy wife and mother of 3 young children) and are looking for good recipes without all the trial and error, then this is probably not the book for you (seeing as only 1 out of the 4 I tried was a "keeper"). And if you are on the fence, check out her blog, try a few recipes for yourself and see how you like them before making the purchase.

Cook Right 4 Your Type: The Practical Kitchen Companion to Eat Right 4 Your Type Review

Cook Right 4 Your Type: The Practical Kitchen Companion to Eat Right 4 Your Type
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I dug out my copy of Peter D'Adamo's ER4YT after being told to embrace the diet by my health care practitioner. I admit to being skeptical at first, the idea of blood type having anything to do with what you ate, how you felt and what kind of personality you had seemed a bit far-fetched. I also wondered how I would adapt to the largely unavailable whole grains and Omega-3 rich fish that I was supposed to be eating. Unfortunately, I live in an area where whole foods are considered extravagently obsessive and seafood means shrimp and crawfish, both no-nos for me on this dieting plan. My shopping is now limited to a once a week foray into the city to the only Whole Food Market in the entire metro area! Nonetheless, I find the on-going results positive. I am eating lots of fruit, fish, the occasional chicken and turkey enhanced by lots of soy products. I have even begun juicing again, taking my juicer down from the supply closet where it was placed when I was in my low-carb phase. I have discovered Ezekial bread which makes a fantastic toast which I admit to pathetically dreaming about while I exercise prior to eating.
I purchased this book to supplement my rather scant knowledge of vegetarian and whole food cuisine and have found it more than adequate. Each food group is represented by recipes that are specifically labeled as A, B, O or AB friendly. In addition, there are specific A,B,O or AB ingredients added or removed in certain recipes to make them extra friendly to your type--a nice lagnaippe! I have subtracted a star only because it does not have as many fish recipes as I would like!
Best of all,I find that I have not tested any of the snack or dessert recipes. The reason for this is simple: I HAVE NOT HAD ANY DESIRE FOR SUGAR and absolutely no desire to eat in between meals. Since my body is happily receiving what it needs, it isn't bothering me with the constant craving I usually experience when using a different dieting plan. On the digestive end, I have not had any bloating or stomach aches, and I have been able to stop taking a popular and expensive fiber therapy!
Keep in mind that if you are a mainstream eater---meals out of a box, or junk food junkie, you are going to have a difficult adjustment to make when trying or just reading this diet through the first time. I would recommend eliminating and adding foods little by little--in fact it may take years---until you are actually adhereing to all the diet advice given in the ER4YT books. I say this from my own experience which tends to get tired and burn out when the change is too great. Give it a shot--it may take a while to see results, but I think your body's acceptance and performance will tell the real story.
