I don't usually write reviews of things but I felt the need to share my joy about this book. Having three kids with food allergies, we struggle every day with things like eating out, public events, and birthday parties. Not only have we found the recipes in this book delicious and easy to make, we love the tips that are included to just make life easier. The Sandlers know what it's all about and Lori's tips are an added bonus to this wonderful book. My youngest son is just about Benjamin's age and when he saw the picture in the book of party ideas, he said "Mom, can we make those cupcakes?" He's never really wanted to do any baking but he was so proud of his cupcakes and they really tasted great. We tried the chocolate puddings and really enjoyed the flavor and the fact that it's served warm made it extra special. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been looking for delicious recipes that are clear and easy to follow that produce great results. I have a friend who's daughter has allergies and I am going to get a copy for her as a birthday gift.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dairy-Free Eating Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dairy-Free Eating

If "The Complete Idiot's Guide" sounds frivolous to you, keep reading. My granddaughter at the ripe old age of 5 has a severe lactose intolerance. She also has a mom and grandmother who are both excellent cooks. The cooks have given this book nothing but rave reviews. They both use the book so much that I bought them each a copy. If you are looking for just one cook book to truly protect someone with a lactose problem and at the same time provide an amazingly complete array of delicious and attractive recipes (that are great for the whole family, not just the allergic person), I'd say this is the one. We have a library of cook books that fills one wall of shelves. About a dozen books of those books are about lactose intolerance and food allergies, but this one by far gets the most use.

I love this cookbook. It has great information on all types of sweeteners and goes through many different types of oils and flours too. The main ingredients she uses in this book for sweeteners are brown rice syrup, barley malt syrup and some have maple syrup. It is pretty easy to find the ingredients and the directions are easy to follow although I am a fairly experienced baker so I do "add lib" when I cook and find that the end result has been great. I made the lemon cake with the sauce but minus the lemon tofu cream because I have a slight allergy to soy. Tofu is definately a required taste and she uses very little in this book and it can easily be omitted.
She does use carob in some recipes so if you do not like carob you can just use cocoa powder or non dairy tropical source chocolate chips. There are quite a few color photos too.
I look forward to making more recipes from this book and the book is worth buying just for the eye opening info she provides on chemicals and how some of our ingredients are processed. It really motivates you to try to find a more natural alternative.

Before Celiac, I was an avid baker. I baked all of our breads (my children never knew what store brought bread was), and that is one of the hardest things that I've had to deal with. The smell of fresh baked bread, the way it feels when you're making it, etc. With this book I have been able to get back some of that nostalgic feeling of being in the kitchen and creating something truly wonderful. I use this cookbook almost daily and share it with anyone I can. I have tried many many other cookbooks and got so discouraged that I didn't want to try anything new. The smell of garbanzo bean flour was enough to make me stop using it. Not to mention the lead weight that came out of the oven every time I tried to bake with 4 or even 5 different flours. Thank you Roben for simplifying baking but while still providing my family with delicious treats from our kitchen. This book is truly a treat for anyone with gluten intolerance, celiac, or various other food allergies. Yeah for being back in the kitchen!!! Heather Jones

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults Review

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults

Being new to the gluten-free diet I have been very disappointed in the majority of the GF cookbooks. The ingredients are often a challenge to find, are expensive, and frankly just taste gross or have a funky texture. The more ingredients that are different from what we "used to eat" the more disappointing the outcome. Of all the cookbooks I've tried so far (8 of the "mainstream" ones) this one has the most familiar ingredients and "normal" foods. My 5 year old has enjoyed everything I have made from this book so far and has been excited to eat something GF that actually tastes like what he used to eat. The recipes are simple, fast, affordable, and best of all we actually enjoy food again! THANK YOU CONNIE SARROS!

I bought this book because it listed all of the allergens that I need to avoid for my 2 year old daughter. When the book arrived, only a small percent of the recipes exclude all of the allergens listed. It was very dissappointing and I am still looking for a cookbook that excludes all of these things.

Although this is a very useful book for anyone with an uncommon food allergy, those who are allergic to peanuts, nuts, and shellfish (and those who are gluten-intolerant) would not find this book as useful. Most of the recipes feature nuts or peanuts as main ingredients, and there's no real help given as to how to make a substitution. As the most common allergies (and the most serious, sometimes even leading to death) are to nuts and peanuts, I'm surprised that these ingredients are featured so prominently in a supposed allergy cookbook.
The same could be said with respect to the seafood recipes and the many recipes featuring grains that contain or (as is the case with oats) may be contaminated with other grains that contain gluten. Even a trace of gluten can bring grief to someone with celiac sprue.
I did not find this book very useful. However, those with allergies to rarer items or whose 'allergies' are merely intolerances (ie. no hives, throat swelling, cardiac arrest, etc.) might find this book useful. I can't recommend it to the average food allergy sufferer, though.

Vegan Yum Yum: Decadent (But Doable) Animal-Free Recipes for Entertaining and Everyday Review

Vegan Yum Yum: Decadent (But Doable) Animal-Free Recipes for Entertaining and Everyday
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this cookbook! Since I follow her blog, I wasn't sure whether this cookbook would be worth my time, but it's been wonderful. Lots of recipes and lots of information are packed into this book. I own a lot of vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, and this one offers truly different and exciting recipes, as well as serving as a resource for basics (like pancakes) and standbys (like a new take on the tofu scramble).
My favorite recipes in this book: blueberry waffles with lemon icing; stuffed banana berry french toast; aloo matar; caramelized leek and spaghetti squash polenta with white sauce; dal makhni; delicata squash stuffed with cherry-almond couscous; chana samosas; sesame ginger seitan dumplings; crispy sesame kale; black bean soup; spicy tomato chickpea soup; baked mac and cheeze; hurry up alfredo; lime peanut noodles with seitan, kale, and carrots; pad see ew; blueberry grunts; and sheera. As you can see, I had quite a lot of favorites!
One of the things I really appreciate about this book is the variety of recipes and ingredients. Ulm has a CSA, and says that a lot of her recipes were created based on what she got from it on a given week. I have one too, so I'm able to enjoy her recipes that involve lots of seasonal vegetables, farm-exclusive delights like delicata squash, and the experience of having so many leftover veggies and clippings that vegetable stock is the best use of resources. Then there are plenty of recipes with more basic ingredients, that can be found at any grocery store, even in my small college town. The more hard-to-get ingredients I can find a little ways out of my way at natural food stores.
It's true that some of the ingredients are unusual -- my closest grocery store seldom carries bok choy or kale, let alone Chinese broccoli and whole Indian spices -- but these recipes all include helpful substitution suggestions and I find cookbooks like Veganomicon to be much worse in this regard, especially when it comes to prices and explaining their function/necessity in the recipe. (And as I said above, I get plenty of kale from my CSA!)
Rather, my biggest problem with this book is that I'm lacking a lot of the equipment that she has, and there is not much in the book itself to help. What's the use of "readily available and budget-friendly ingredients" if I can't make the recipes without investing in specialty equipment? While I have a well-stocked kitchen (lots of pots and pans, mixing bowls, good knives, a blender, a food processor, a chopping bowl, a mortar and pestle, a pastry knife, various baking and loaf pans) most of my cooking equipment is basic and on the low end. But according to this book, I can't make a number of her recipes and drinks because the motor on my blender isn't fast enough. In fact, she says that only a Vita-Mix, a piece of equipment that would cost me as much as a month's rent, may be the only blender good enough. And there's nothing suggesting she tried it on other blenders. I don't appreciate being told that a recipe "may" require a Vita-Mix. Didn't she have testers who couldn't afford one? Couldn't she have tried it with a food processor? Can I have a hint of whether trying to blend these ingredients would be a waste of my time and money? Couldn't she include suggestions on what to do if you don't have a microplaner, a spice grinder, or a mandoline?
My only other complaint is minor, which is that I love reading cookbooks, and while this one was essentially well-written, it was a lot like a blog. Not a big surprise, but I like a bit more formality and editing from my recipes. Not that I'm demanding a formal paper, just that a consistent voice, structure, and confidence on the part of the author likewise instills confidence in me about the recipes. The background was usually interesting, and the alternatives and suggestions were helpful, but sometimes felt like I wasn't reading a completed recipe. I don't want the author's casual assurance that "this will taste great, I promise": I would hope you would think everything in your recipe book tastes great! And it certainly does, so don't be wishy-washy about it.
I don't understand the 1 star review ragging on the photos. It's not true that a good camera is all anyone needs. The beautiful photographs also show her understanding of composition, presentation, lighting, and photography generally. I like this in a cookbook and personally it instills further confidence for me in the book's author! Yes, it's true that beautiful photos don't make a cookbook inherently good as some reviews certainly seem to be suggesting, but the recipes in this book are amazing enough that the photos are a wonderful bonus and a treat to have hard copy!
Like other reviewers, I appreciated her casual attitude when it came to veganism. I am a vegan myself, but that doesn't mean I enjoy being condescended to about what a horrible thing it is to eat animal products. This is a book of delicious animal-free recipes, and that's that.
Essentially, all of my problems with it were anticipated from reading her blog. And all my excitement about it too! I'm so glad that this book is finally in print. If you have any trepidation about buying this book, look over her blog and decide whether you would like having a lot of these recipes and a lot of recipes in a similar style in print to keep in your kitchen. I for one love it!

I have been living with Celiac for over 15 years and I have every book, cookbook, grocery guide, and list I can download online and WOW, I can't believe the stuff they all missed. Besides the valuable research this author has obviously done, this book is the only one that fits in my purse easily when I grocery shop and it is the only one that lists by ingredient you can check on labels individually. By far this is the most important guide I have and don't think I'll be bothering with my massive grocery guides anymore. If you have Celiac, you NEED this guide! Don't think twice and just order. As far as I'm concerned, doctors should just be handing out this guide as soon as they diagnose anyone with gluten intolerance

The most comprehensive and accurate safe/unsafe list to date, this small pocket guide is an essential tool in managing a gluten free diet. The author, also a Celiac, Certified Nutritionist, and Natural Health Consultant, has carefully verified safe and unsafe ingredients and delivered them in a handy pocketbook format. The most complete list on the market today, with information regarding dozens of unsafe items that are incorrectly listed as safe on most other lists. Note: this is not a grocery guide, as those can be outdated before even printed because manufacturers change ingredients often and without warning. This guide indicates actual ingredients you can check on labels - which is the only way to manage a gluten free diet safely. The pocketbook format makes it incredibly easy to carry everywhere andincludes bonus material regarding vitamin requirements, where to look for hidden dangers, avoiding cross-contamination, and creative ideas on how to make a smooth, even enjoyable, transition to living a gluten free life.No Celiac will want to go without this handy guide, and certainly never do any grocery shopping without this guide.

Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook Review

Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having to switch to gluten free baking was challenging enough, but I have to avoid dairy, nuts and nut flours, soy, too. Baked goods have tried my patience for the past 8.5 years. Because my child has sensitivity to soy, I can't buy a lot of GFCF mixes that are on the market. And many years I lost count of the absolute flops that went straight to the trash can. GFCF baked goods can be gritty and gummy, especially when you are avoiding eggs, too. (Because we rotate eggs, sometimes I need to bake without them.)
The demands of a child with autism monopolized my time, and I have, over the years, found a cake mix, a brownie mix and a pancake mix that I like and have stuck with them, and that's pretty much it.
Gluten free flours, xanthan gum, and all the "tricks" to GFCFSFEF+++ baking are expensive. They take up a lot of space in kitchen cupboards. Spending the money and time to try a recipe only to have turn out gritty or gummy is frustrating, and I admit, I gave up in a big way. (Gluten was the first big allergen that we removed 8.5 years ago, and I remember it being so very challenging at the time. Little did I know I'd have to remove a lot more and that I would envy folks who are simply gluten free -- I think that would be so easy!)
I simply never understood the science to baking GFCFSFEF+++ breads, cookies, cakes and other baked goods. I didn't have the time or the background to try to figure it out.
Until now. Now, I'm getting an education about the alchemy of baking without traditional baking ingredients like milk, wheat and eggs: The Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook, How To Bake without Gluten, Wheat, Dairy, Eggs, Soy, Peanuts, Tree nuts, and Sesame by Cybele Pascal. Cybele Pascal is a chef who happens to be the mother of a child with severe food allergies. She went to work adapting all of our favorite baked items and put her collection of successes into a beautiful cookbook. And yes, there are color photos of some of the recipes (I like photos!).
I. Adore. This. Cookbook! This book is not just a collection of recipes. Instead, Pascal takes the time to teach me about baking allergen free with almost the same restrictions we have at my house. The section called, "The Dry Goods Pantry" in Chapter 1, Stocking your Allergen-Free Pantry, combined with all of Chapter 2, "How To Bake Allergen-Free" provide a mini-baking school, and I would like these pages + the resource section in the back of the book available in a purse sized tri-fold to take with me to the grocery store. Pascal offers suggestions for replacing eggs, dairy, and wheat flour that have me looking through "regular" cookbooks with a new perspective.
I wish I'd had this cookbook nine years ago.

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults, Second Edition Review

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To make many of the recipes in this book you need to make up your own gluten-free flour mixture. There are two options. The first is a mixture of rice flour, potato starch, sorghum flour, tapioca flour, cornstarch, garbanzo bean flour and xanthan gum. Most of these items are easy to find online or at your local health food store. The second option requires you to mix together brown rice flour, sorghum flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, coconut flour, garbanzo bean flour, golden flaxseed meal, cornstarch and xanthan gum.
Once you have these flour mixtures made you can then make a number of interesting and delicious dishes. Not every recipe requires the flour mixture, some indicate which type of product to buy, like for instance: gluten-free tortillas. The author recommends you buy Frito Lay Tostitos, which are gluten free.
Here are a few of the recipes you may want to try:
Homemade Granola
Peanut Butter Smoothie
Spicy Cheese Muffins (requires 1 cup gluten-free flour)
Breakfast Enchiladas
Banana Pancakes (requires ¾ cup gluten-free flour)
Corned Beef and Cabbage
Mixed Bean Salad
Banana Biscotti
Chocolate Cherry Cake
Many of the recipes are not only gluten-free they are also dairy-free. At the start of the book there is a long list of items that contain gluten. It might be helpful to know that commercially packaged frozen hamburger patties contain wheat-based fillers. There is also a list for people who want to live dairy-free. If you are new to cooking you will also appreciate the list of kitchen hints and cooking techniques. Most of the main dishes serve 4-8.
If you don't want to make up your own flour blend, you may also be interested in:
Bob's Red Mill All-Purpose Gluten-Free Baking Flour. I've used it in a few recipes in the past and it seemed to work fairly well. It does however seem to have more bean flours than the flour recipes in this book.

Lick It Creamy Dreamy Vegan Ice Creams Your Mouth Will Love Review

Lick It Creamy Dreamy Vegan Ice Creams Your Mouth Will Love
Average Reviews:

In addition to being allergic to dairy, I also have to avoid wheat (and corn and soy). So the closest thing I've had to a dessert in years is sorbet, and even then I feel guilty about all the white sugar.
I've made two of Cathe Olson's ice cream recipes so far: coconut, by hand (before I had an ice cream maker, and it really wasn't very hard to do) and chocolate...both fabulous. Not only am I not allergic to them, I don't even have to feel guilty. Just a little agave as a sweetener, all natural, full of food value...it's like a pleasant dream I would have.
(Note: I love coconut milk, but thought it would change the experience of chocolate ice cream. Not so much. It just tasted like chocolate...very rich and creamy...and I was not aware of a coconut base.)
I've been using almond milk instead of soy and it works wonderfully, I highly recommend this book for anybody who wants to get away from dairy...and I think many people might be happier and healthier (and less stuffy) if they tried it.
