Herbal Remedies (EYEWITNESS COMPANION GUIDES) Review

Herbal Remedies (EYEWITNESS COMPANION GUIDES)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Eyewitness Companions has a long list of publications. And this is one that will probably interest many readers. The focus? The title says it all: "Herbal Remedies." I am somewhat skeptical about all the claims made for herbal medicine. On the other hand, I also know that there are some research findings suggestive of real value for some herbs.
Use of herbs to address ills of one sort or another goes way back in time. And such natural medicine is widespread in many parts of the world. The purpose of the book: ". . .'Herbal Remedies' aims to provide you with the essential information to answer [a series of basic questions], to choose safe and appropriate herbal remedies, and to put them to good use."
The book is divided into several chapters--Chapter 1 addresses what herbal medicine is; Chapter two focuses on how to use herbal remedies; the third chapter explores safety and quality; Chapter 4 may be the heart of the book, an A--Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) to Z--Zingiber officinalis (Ginger). The final chapter outlines which herbs go with what maladies (e.g., for a migraine, try Feverfew, Butterbur, or Lavender).
For me, the heart of the book is the enumeration of herbal palliatives. A few examples to illustrate. . . . The miracle of garlic! For medicinal use, the clove is the part used. The clove has several medicinal effects--antibiotic, blood-thinner, antifungal, counters cough and respiratory ailments, decreased blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, and nurtures useful intestinal flora. Dosage? One clove a day. Caution: if already taking blood thinners, take garlic only on the advice of an herbal or medical practitioner. The book also notes that there is a fair amount of research testifying to the utility of garlic treatments.
Lavender. Parts used include essential oil, flower, and leaves. It acts as an analgesic, an antidepressant, antiseptic, and sedative, among others. It appears to have some value against headaches. Key information: it is quite safe, it has long been traditionally used as a medicine, and there is some evidence that it might have positive medical benefits.
Sarsaparilla. The root is used. It may serve as an anti-inflammatory agent. Other possible impacts? Anti-rheumatic, detoxicant, diuretic, and tonic. It is fairly safe (4 of 5 stars), used pretty widely traditionally (4 of 5 stars), and open to question as far as efficacy (only 2 of 5 stars).
All in all, an enjoyable volume, and one that suggests how herbal remedies might address a variety of ailments that we all suffer from at one point or another. Especially nice is that the book provides some assessment as to how well research supports the claims for each herb.

Your Stomach: What is Really Making You Miserable and What to Do About It (Praktikos Health)

Waking up doctors and individuals to the importance of stomach acid and the foolishness of using antacids is well worth five stars.
Dr. Jonathan Wright is one of the top dozen or so brilliant MDs helping to educate doctors and people while providing excellent medical care for his patients. His lectures and presentations are usually full of extremely valuable information.
Unfortunately this book waffles around for the first twenty pages talking about conventional thought promoting antacids as a cure for GERD or acid reflux. It isn't until about page twenty when Dr. Wright finally starts to discuss some of the important scientific concepts (and he never gets technical). Another 19 pages convey some useful information (for the majority of people that weren't aware of this already).
As another reviewer pointed out, only 39 pages of this book is actual discussion of the topic, the rest is supporting references. I don't have a problem with this book being short (it can literally be read in just a few minutes).
I had hoped this would be a good medical reference book to add to my shelf of great books. Unfortunately there is very little solid information in this book. If you understand the basic concept that most people with stomach issues (including acid reflux) actually suffer from low stomach acid, not too much stomach acid, and you understand that consuming antacids only gives temporary relief while causing more long term issues, then there is no reason to purchase this book.
I'm truly disappointed by this book as I consider Dr. Jonathan Wright to be one of the best colleagues in our fight against incompetent medical care. (I never hesitate to refer clients to him for care.)

Most Americans suffer stomach problems. Many lead lives of utter misery. Whether you call it heartburn or acid reflux, this painful affliction is also associated with throat cancer. Shockingly, the problem may not be too much stomach acid, but too little! And antacids and acid blockers may actually be making the problem worse. This powerful little book offers solid scientific information about one of the most common and distressing ailments in America. There is also fascinating information about little-used all-natural supplements.

Doctor's Book of Food Remedies Review

Doctor's Book of Food Remedies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love. More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too!
I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food. Taking ellagic acid (a cancer fighter) in a pill form doesn't work. It is essential to eat strawberries or other berries in order to obtain ellagic acid. After reading this book you will look at a stawberry pie in a new way.
"Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food." --Hippocrates, 400 B.C.
This book also gives helpful hints on how to select produce and keep it fresh. There is also some great information on how to prepare fruits and vegetables.
You will find great life saving information:
Eating cherries helps to prevent cancer, "perillyl alcohol" blocks the formation of a variety of cancers and contain a compound called quercetin. This neutralizes cancer-causing agents in the body. It also shields your DNA against cancer.
Eating red grapefruits will give you more "lycopene" which helps protect against heart disease. Ruby Red and Star Ruby are great choices.
"Diet has the distinction of being the only major determinant of health that is completely under your control." --Andrew Weil, M.D.
The recipes are easy to make and there are plenty of them. There are also plenty of great pictures to get you to the store! Blueberries anyone...

Natural Healing Wisdom and Know How: Useful Practices, Recipes, and Formulas for a Lifetime of Health

Thinking about herbs and their value in healing? Wondering how acupressure works? Not sure what macrobiotics are? Wondering how to heal yourself through good nutrition and supplements? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this complete natural healing collection is a book you simply must own.
Whether you are interested for the sake of wellness or in need of natural healing for a condition or disease, you will find the information you need inside the cover of this book. The book itself is larger than an encyclopedia, 10 1/2 by 13 3/4". It includes chapters on naturopathy, herbalism, homeopathy, aromatherapy, Eastern healing methods, energy healing, flower essences, mind-body healing techniques, healing with foods, nutrition, diet and supplements, and other healing techniques. Wow ... nearly 500 pages of information, suggestions, tips, charts, and tables. Amazing!
My favorites are the chapters on nutrition and herbs. There are some things that at the moment I don't have time to do, like growing my own sprouts, but with suggestions for every condition from eating disorders to high blood pressure and everything in between, the pages of this book are sure to be frequently referenced in my home, like the next time one of us gets poison ivy. Since we live in a wooded area, that happens more frequently than I like to remember.
Like Susan Schenk, I also am quite interested in the section on targeted nutrition. Most people wait until they have an affliction before they do anything about it. In the hospital where I work, our insurance costs are skyrocketing, and the top five diseases and conditions causing this rise are totally preventable. Many of our health problems today are due to our lousy diet.
Interested in prevention and natural healing? This is one book you need to order!

Textbook of Ayurveda, Volume One: Fundamental Principles Review

Textbook of Ayurveda, Volume One: Fundamental Principles

(More customer reviews)
Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Get it!

In his Ayurvedic Studies Program, Vasant Lad, Ayurvedic Physician, teaches Ayurveda as a science of moment-to-moment living. Each lecture that he gives flows from his own heart in a river of healing wisdom that is inspired by and pertinent to the students who are present at the time of the lecture. This textbook is a presentation of Dr. Lad's years of teaching in that classroom setting. It conveys the philosophical and fundamental principles of his first year Ayurvedic Studies Program at the Ayurvedic Institute in a dynamic and inspirational way. This book will give the student a detailed foundation upon which to pursue deeper knowledge, including that of the future volumes in this series.

PDR for Herbal Medicines, 4th Edition Review

PDR for Herbal Medicines, 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This new edition of the PDR for Herbal Medicines goes beyond the first edition, published in December of 1998. While the first edition was somewhat limited by dated, unreferenced information, this one is much more up-to-date and includes recent references to the literature, such as the St. John's wort interactions with indinavir and cyclosporin that were just published this year. Each entry gives a botanical overview, describes actions and pharmacology, and discusses indications and usage in various medical traditions. There is information on clinical trials, and more material on herb/drug interaction, precautions, contraindications, adverse reactions, and dosage. Having a complete herbal reference is a necessity for physicians and other health-care providers in today's world - whether they want to include some herbals in their armamentarium or merely wish to head off possible herb-drug interactions among the patients who are treating themselves.
A careful reading of the hypericum section, however, revealed that several newer clinical trials were not included, while an old (1994) study remained.
In this reference, the physician would learn St. John's wort taken concomitantly with sertraline may lead to "serotonin syndrome," e.g., sweating, tremor, flushing, confusion and agitation. The likelihood of seeing this effect would be difficult to judge, however, since these anecdotal reports from the literature are taken a face value with little critical appraisal. If we don't know how many patients have taken this particular combination, we have no denominator. The inclusion of all material related to toxicologic effects is good for the sake of a comprehensive overview, but the drawback is to lose the feel for what may really be important. An example is the inclusion of a reference regarding hypericum toxicity when directly incubated with sperm or oocytes. Without pointing out that this very unusual study is not the way reproductive or teratogenic is determined during drug development, the reader may be left with the belief that hypericum showed reproductive toxicity. The reference to an interaction with theophylline might have mentioned that the patient was on a plethora of other drugs and relied on her recollection of events. It might also have mentioned that direct human studies of the 1A2 and 2D6 enzymes found no effect from hypericum. Rather, it stated that hypericum "...may significantly affect plasma concentrations of any drug that is metabolized by the cytochrome P-450 system." This is not supported by data. Also unsupported is the incorrect statement taken from Schultz et al's Rational Phytotherapy that phototoxicity may occur at hypericin plasma concentrations of 50 mcg/mL. This should have read 50 mcg/L (or 50 ng/mL) as the original paper reported. Also not useful is the daily dosage recommendation of 200 - 1000 mcg hypericin for depression; one might conclude that there is evidence for this.
While this book is sold as a mainstream reference it may be somewhat daunting for the layman. It's well-organized style and the provision of recent scientific and medical references will make it a useful starting place for more in depth research for health-care professionals. Perhaps the publication of an erratum could be recommended.

The Raw Gourmet Review

The Raw Gourmet
Average Reviews:

Whether you're just looking to add more fruits and vegetables into your food program, are transitioning into becoming vegetarian or going more into raw foods, this is THE book for you.
It's got great photos, sections on; the basics including a guide to using the book and ten raw food kitchen essentials so you can prepare a meal within 20 minutes of arriving home; breakfast; juices and blended drinks; fundamental flavors including soups, sauces, dressings, etc.; entrees and desserts. There is a section on sprouting, food combining, a 3-week menu plan; special occasion menu suggestions, sources and grocery guide.
In the grocery guide, Nomi explains foods which some people may not be familiar with and what they may be used for. Most of the ingredients are common and familiar to most people or, if not, can be substituted for those that are.
In the sources section, she tells where to get many of the ingredients included in the recipes. Living in California, I've found I can get most of the ingredients at my local "natural" (many of the foods I wouldn't classify as natural) foods store, but for someone living far from these sources, it's nice to know where to go. I and my friends have purchased from a couple of these places and found the service and quality of foods to be excellent.
I would suggest that if you don't have one, the minimum to get to assist in making many of these recipes is a good food processor and a good blender. You can always upgrade as you become more creative. Nomi also lists sources for dehydrators, juicers and blenders. I purchased the ones she recommends before I knew about this book and I agree with her assessments.
Nomi was introduced to raw foods over 10 years ago by a holistic physician. At first she was eating about 50% of her foods raw and eventually became sincere about eat raw foods. She "said good-bye" to fibromyalgia, hypoglycemia, mood swings, allergic sinusitis, digestive disorders, including acid reflux and candida. You can see why she is a raw foods advocate.
If you're looking for a good, all-purpose book, I highly recommend The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon

Prescription for Herbal Healing: An Easy-to-Use A-Z Reference to Hundreds of Common Disorders and Their Herbal Remedies Review

Prescription for Herbal Healing: An Easy-to-Use A-Z Reference to Hundreds of Common Disorders and Their Herbal Remedies
Average Reviews:

We all loved the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by James F. Balch and Phyllis A. Balch, and now comes its long awaited twin; The same winning format, the same width of knowledge, and this time - the best herbs to treat (almost) every ailment. Besides an overview of the principles of herbal healing, the first part of the book describes a long list of herbs that are mentioned throughout the book, the scientific evidence of their benefit, and various considerations for use, alone and/or with other herbs. However, this part is missing a listing of active constituents (future edition?). The second part excells in bringing an alphabetical listing of various health conditions and summarizing, in a clear-cut table, the herbs that can be used, the doses, some ready formulas, and a short comment on action. I loved this format in the first book, and find myself praising this format in the present book. Need to treat an ailment? - just open the right page, and the table of beneficial herbs is right in front of your eyes. The story goes on - "Herbs to Avoid", general "Recommendations" and "Considerations" - all written by a super-expert in the field. Amazon found a very strange way to show us the contents of a book ("look inside") but never exposed "real" pages. Just give a customer a chance to look at a page from the second part of this book and he will know what this book is all about. In the third part I found the information I needed to prepare my own herbal extracts. The tips are invaluable and the various techniques for herbal healing are very well discussed. Ms. Balch made our life much easier and healthier by introducing two superb books where in a glance one can match nutritional healing with herbal healing for a wide array of common health problems. It's time to go one further step - to move both books to the CD format...

The Cure for All Diseases Review

The Cure for All Diseases
Average Reviews:

I am a finance professional from New York City and had suffered from symptoms similar to the ones present in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, although I never had CFS officially diagnosed. As soon as I started looking for a solution I came to the conclusion that I was not going to find it in traditional medicine, but in alternative medicines.
I ran into a photocopied sheet with the recipe for the parasite program, which I did. I then started looking for the book where the photocopy came from.
The most striking thing is that Dr. Clarke doesn't seem to be in this for the money. She explicitly allows reproductions or copies of this book (for free!) without requiring additional permission from the author. How many authors or books allow this? She also describes how to pick up the parts to build a zapper from cheap hardware store parts. Of course if you don't have the patience to build one yourself, you can buy one from one of the available services for about $70.
I have been following most of her advices with excellent results. I have taken all the metal from my mouth, performed over 10 liver cleanses, and done the parasite program on a regular basis. Every time I have a health problem I go to back to the book for reference and invariably find the way to approach the problem.
I cannot say enough good things about this book, although it is not for everyone. If you need absolute scientific proof for everything she says, then... it's not for you.

Minding My Mitochondria 2nd Edition: How I overcame secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) and got out of my wheelchair. Review

Minding My Mitochondria 2nd Edition: How I overcame secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) and got out of my wheelchair.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr Terry Wahls, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa, is an inspiration. She was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2000, and within three years had become wheelchair dependent in the secondary progressive phase of the disease. Her rapid descent into disability was a strong motivation to begin to delve into the scientific literature around MS. Terry began to assemble literature around the health of mitochondria. These little (about 5micrometres diameter) structures live inside our cells and convert food into energy. It is quite likely that over evolution, these tiny particles originated as bacteria that learned how to live symbiotically in cells as organisms grew more and more complex. They play very important roles not only in energy production for cells, but in cell death and ageing. Terry became convinced after reviewing the literature that mitochondrial health was intimately tied up with MS, and set about devising a program to improve the health of her mitochondria. The nutritional program she produced has many similarities with other ultra-healthy diets that have been shown to produce marked improvements in other chronic western diseases. She also added electrical stimulation in an attempt to encourage muscles suffering from disuse to get accustomed to activity again.
The results were astonishing. Six months after starting the program, she attempted to ride a bicycle again, in a year she completed an 18 mile bicycle tour, and now she is fully mobile. Terry chose to spread the word rather than be content with her own improvement. Hence the second edition of her book `Minding My Mitochondria: How I overcame secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) and got out of my wheelchair', at the time of writing ranked number 8th best-selling MS book on Amazon, was released in April 2010.
Dr Wahls' book is powerful, as is her story. One of the things that strikes you on reading the various accounts of people who have recovered from MS is the great similarity between their recommendations. Most firmly place optimal nutrition at the top of the list of important interventions. The rationale for Dr Wahls' nutritional program, of essentially a plant-based diet with an emphasis on plenty of high-antioxidant vegetables and fruit, is to optimise mitochondrial function. But in fact, it is an ultra-healthy diet that also has wide-ranging benefits in the body through many different mechanisms, on lipid profile, endothelial health, the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, blood pressure, cognition, mood, and so on. Whether or not it operates particularly through its effect on mitochondria is actually not clear, but given its similarity to other well-studied nutritional approaches such as ultra-low saturated fat diets (the Swank approach in MS), and plant-based wholefood diets (the Colin Campbell and Dean Ornish approaches to health) in general, there is every reason to expect it would work in MS.
The scientific part of the book is actually quite short, with chapters about the function of mitochondria and cell metabolism, but actually not a lot of clinical evidence presented about a direct link between mitochondrial health and MS, and certainly not a lot of evidence showing the intervention works. That is to be expected given the heavy bias in medical research in general towards drugs. Most of the book is in fact made up of recipes. These can be very useful for people with MS just starting out on a healthy way of eating, who haven't yet sourced much in the way of recipes for this approach. Most people who are trying to do everything possible to stay well after a diagnosis of MS will have already assembled a recipe bank for daily use from many other sources.
But Dr Wahls is a physician and an MS survivor, and her real strength is not in cooking but in medicine and healing. That it is possible to recover from secondary progressive MS is the real story here. Professor Roy Swank showed in his landmark but often overlooked study that regardless of level of disability at entry, people with MS adhering to his diet had not deteriorated much over the 34 years of study. By implication, given that some with progressive disease got worse and some died from MS, some must have got better and some recovered. But their individual details have never been published. One of the great values of Dr Wahls' book is that it shows that recovery from secondary progressive MS is possible. It only has to happen once to make it possible, and there can be no doubt she has recovered significantly.
Some may dispute the exact details of the diet, as different commentators often do about any dietary approach to MS, such as Dr Wahls' recommendation to eat meat (I must admit I cannot reconcile this recommendation with my own review of the literature on diet in MS), or the omission of some key components of optimal health, like meditation, adequate sun exposure, and so on. Others may be critical that there is no direct evidence provided of a link between mitochondrial health and MS, or the suggested diet and the health of mitochondria. Was the diet successful in her case because of its effect on mitochondria, or through some other mechanism? In fact this is largely unimportant. The important thing is that Dr Terry Wahls recovered. Dr Wahls' story and her book make inspiring reading for anyone affected by MS, particularly those with progressive MS. People with MS, their relatives and their healthcare professionals should take the time to read this book, realise what is possible, and not give up hope even if they have profound disability.

Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook and Cure

My husband has had chronic GERD for years without knowing it. He started having symptoms that didn't make sense around last January. He was short of breath, cleared his throat a lot, had nausea and an upset stomach, and finally passed out in the middle of the night. I found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. After months of tests his GI doctor diagnosed him with Barrett's syndrome, a precancerous condition of the esophagus, but he couldn't explain the respiratory involvement. Worse yet, the only solutions offered were very invasive - surgery to remove the abnormal cells or light therapy with not the best chance of success. We needed a second opinion and we found Dr. Koufman. She ran different tests that tracked his acid level during an entire day of activities, including while eating, sleeping, coughing, everything. My husband had an enormous amount of acid and was refluxing all the way up to his larynx. The standard course of treatment from the GI doctor included a one-a-day medication that did not last the full 24 hours for my husband, so since he took it in the morning, it stopped working while he was sleeping,in the worst position for reflux to again attack the esophagus that was trying to heal all day.
Within a couple of days of meeting Dr. Koufman, my husband was on the strict phase of the diet. It wasn't easy since he was previously working in the wine trade and had to completely stop drinking wine, coffee, pretty much everything except water, milk, aloe juice and camomile tea. She also changed his medications to better control the condition over 24 hours. Within about 3 weeks, he started feeling noticeably better. After a couple of months, he went back for more tests and his condition had improved dramatically. This all happened before the book was published and when it came out he was so excited by the recipes. What a difference it has made to be able to enjoy gourmet-style food after months of just obeying a list of forbidden foods. Now his condition has almost completely reversed, he has lost 35 pounds, and he is able to start adding things back in, like Gala apples.
Although a life-threatening disease is never a good thing, this experience has changed life for our entire family. Dr. Koufman's care and now her invaluable book have not only turned around my husband's condition and allowed him to take charge of his health, but the delicious recipes have allowed him to enjoy food again without feeling like he is stuck with a life-sentence of bland.

This is one of the most awakening books I have ever read. Andreas explains bodily functions is plain simple English. He explains medicines short comings such as their inability to detect gall stones and how they tell you there is a problem only after a blood test indicates liver damage due to the number of stones getting far out of control. He gives great insight for understanding your body lowering your dependency on your doctor who only has the "cut it out" solution.
I did the flush and passed at least 100 pea size gull stones. A day later, I felt 10 years younger and my mental clarity was significantly improved.
Buy this book before it is banned by the medical mafia. If you have had your gall bladder removed, it is an absolute must. He explains how to compensate for the loss and how your gall bladder is important.

This fact-filled volume has foods listed in alphabetical order, interspersed with health conditions that can be remedied. Some of the latter are intuitively expected in a book like this (e. g., heartburn, high blood pressure), while others are not (e. g., lupus, aging, motion sickness).
This work consists of 140 short chapters, each on a separate topic. This makes it easy to zero-in on a particular issue of interest or concern without getting bogged down in details and tangents. Furthermore, there is also a handy, profuse index for cross-reference of foods and health conditions.
The information presented is extensive. While some of it can pass for "conventional wisdom", other information cannot--at least not easily. Did you know, for example, that beans can stabilize blood sugar and lower cholesterol levels? Or that the quercetin found in the skins of apples can guard against heart attacks? Or that honey has both antibacterial and antibiotic properties? Or that the oleic acid found in avocados can help lower cholesterol levels? Or that the lowly, smelly onion is full of compounds that can help prevent the development of cancer and coronary heart disease?
