FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent.
Dr. Khalsa writes a chapter about each of his seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy to help you restore balance to your body, mind and soul. They are:
1 Detoxify your body. (If fasting isn't for you, you can take two 450 mg aloe vera tablets at night or go on a monodiet.)
2 Go organic. ("The switch to organic food is vital if we are to save our environment.")
3 Limit or eliminate genetically engineered foods. (Examples include: aspartame, canola, corn, cotton, crook-necked yellow squash, dairy products, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, and tomatoes.)
4 Eat clean protein. (Buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, and venison are some non-traditional sources. I personally enjoy the latter very much. Choose chicken and fish--preferably wild salmon or other oily fish. Shark, swordfish and tuna also have potential problems with contamination--mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic. Also soy protein and definitely beans and legumes are great--they have almost no fat and are rich in fiber and good carbohydrates.)
5 Discover juicing and supplements. (I don't do this one because there is more fiber in the fruit than the juice and that is good if you want to avoid getting type 2 diabetes down the road.)
6 Cook consciously and eat mindfully. (Chew slowly, savor your food, sit down and relax and "remember that everything we eat comes from God, as do our health and healing.")
7 Make the transition to the yoga nutritional therapy diet. ("By following a plant-based diet, you will find that you have improved focus and higher productivity in your daily life.")
My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity."
Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

My son has ADHD and we have struggled for years with every type of medication the doctors pushed at us. My son did not do well on any of the medications that we trialed. He became someone else, lost in his own mind. He became very agressive, alienated, depressed,not able to gain weight or sleep. I made the decision that I wanted to try something different than the medications that made my child foreign to me. Thank god that one of my friends had started seeing Dr. Bob and told me about this book. I was very skeptical at first. I remember thinking to my self that there was no way this was going to work by food modification and vitamins. A few weeks after we started the modifications to the diet I started noticing little changes. About 3 months into it I could not believe that I had my child back. He was happy again, wanting to play outside and with his friends. He could concentrate at school and was not angry or defiant anymore.He had put on about 8 pounds. Best of all he was off the medication and his body was health again.

This book is a simple guide to DIET change. You can see by reading the reviews there are many opinions about ADHD. Some will have you believe that it is a DISEASE and only MEDS can HELP!! The BOTTOM LINE is the FACT!!! DHA in the brain is critical for OPTIMAL BRAIN function. If you do not want to change you or your families diet do not PURCHASE the book. TRANS FAT interupts the creation of DHA, if for example you or your child eat peanut butter with TRANS fat, you will have long term challenges. Some have a problem with a NATURAL APPROACH, let me tell if meds were the answer you would not see so many looking for NATURAL options. Why a CHIROPRACTOR? The body works by nervous system function, when there is interuption in this communication like a USB port being disconnected the body will not function optimally. There is a chapter on spinal function, you will be amazed by what you will learn. Dr. Bob's approach is simple, create the platform to create DHA by feeding the body correct nutrients, eliminating sugar for some, trans fat for others, dairy can be an issue. It is not uncommn for ADHD children to have ADHD parents. I know the book will make a difference. Write down what you and or your child eats, look at the labels; if you see a pattern of trans fat or partially hydrogenated oils you would be very wise to get the book and make changes. DB

Since we live in a wooded area, that happens more frequently than I like to remember.
Like Susan Schenk, I also am quite interested in the section on targeted nutrition. Most people wait until they have an affliction before they do anything about it. In the hospital where I work, our insurance costs are skyrocketing, and the top five diseases and conditions causing this rise are totally preventable. Many of our health problems today are due to our lousy diet.

Grow Your Own Drugs is filled with (mostly) easy to make recipes--all from natural ingredients that are readily available. The book is also beautiful to look through, making it more likely you will feel motivated to actually try many of the recipes. The book covers beauty recipes, and recipes to make you feel better or cure what ails you.
I have been waiting for this book to be available in the States, as a friend from the UK had been raving about it.
I already use (almost) only natural/organic beauty products and drugs, but look forward to replacing some store-bought with home made. Furthermore, I cook from scratch and make most of my cleaning products from scratch. Finally, I do use essential oils and flower essences to help alter my moods and for medicinal purposes--and they work. (For example, lavender is calming, tea tree for blemishes, etc.) So, Grow Your Own Drugs this is a natural step forward for me.
I also like that the author, James Wong, is a scientists who has also studied the properties of plants around the world--this is no hobbyist! (As someone who has dabbled with the property of plants, I recognize many of the cures as those that are well established.) So, I feel comfortable will his advice and recipes.
A quick look shows me that I already have many ingredients necessary to get me started on making several recipes, including one for inflammation, sore throats and for the upcoming season--bee stings.
Highly recommend.

After months of doctor appointments, I was finally diagnosed with Candida. I knew nothing about candidiasis and so I started searching the web for information. This book contains the most comprehensive, easy to understand information that I've found. The author is very thorough without going into overwhelming detail.
