(More customer reviews)This book was so helpful to me as a full time working mother with a 7 year old daughter. The crafts were simple to do, yet looked like we had spent days in the making. What more could a mother want! My daughter loved making the easy decoupage christmas balls almost as much as my in-laws loved receiving them. The candy land house was our schools answer to the dreded gingerbread house (the frame is made from a six pack carboard container) I cheer the author who can put together such a well written & workable book. In closing I am off to the kitchen to whip up one of the fabulous recipes! I would say wish me luck, but I have confidence in the Snow White Bunnies being the perfect answer.

I happened into a bartending job when a former roommate of mine was moving, and his employer needed a bartender immediately. I knew absolutely nothing about tending bar at the time, but this book gave me the knowledge I needed to get started. I developed my skill as a bartender at that job and have since moved on to much busier establishments. Forget bartending school--this book, along with a more expansive recipe book like Mr. Boston's for the occasional obscure drink request, is all you need.

(More customer reviews)Let's be honest -- when it comes to mixed drinks, there's probably about two dozen that any bartender really needs to know, and although they drift in and out of popularity (I'm pretty sure there's a lot more caipirinhas and cosmos out there than old-fashioneds or rum flips), the top of the list isn't going to be very taxing on a bartender's memory. That, of course, is why we have bartender guides -- something that can be kept behind the bar next to the cash register in case a patron wants something that isn't that easy to remember.
This particular book is a nicely presented one, with color pictures and organized by spirit (with two indexes, one by drink, one by subject). I had some friends throw drink names at me and most of them came up in the book, so it's definitely got all the important ones. However, it is a rather conservative book -- apart from the fairly famous edgily-named ones like Sex on the Beach, a lot of the more twisted drinks I've heard of like the Apple F***er, the Adios Mother, and the Cement Mixer don't really show up in here, at least not under their real names. (You may have better luck with some of the more humorous ones like Bartending For Dummies or a shot book.)
Honestly there's nothing too terribly exciting going on in here, and for the most part it's probalby interchangeable with Mr. Boston or The Bartenders Black Book, or for that matter half a dozen other well-written, comprehensive bar guides. It's prettier than most bar books you'll find, with glossy pages and lots of color photography, so if you're the sort who likes to just browse things like this, it's an excellent choice for that. If you're in the market, try it out.

(More customer reviews)Other than being a patron of Bars and Taverns I thought I knew very little of the business side of operating such an establishment. This 550 page very large-print book only made me a little bit smarter.
I would have been a lot happier if the book was half the price and all the large-print filler material and excess white space was deleted. More on that below.
I became a trustee of a non-profit service organization that runs an active 7 day a week social club. My responsibility is to audit the overall organization. I was hoping that I could find a book that would teach me enough specific details to understands the management side of purchasing, inventory, financial controls, and the segregation of financial responsibilities among employees to get the Food, Beer and Alcohol part of our operation on a sound business footing. The sub-title, "How to operate a financially successful bar ...", is misleading since those sections for my use are very weak.
The section on 'Bar Controls' is basically from the marketing descriptions from different equipment providers that I had previously read on the internet with a simple google on the topic. [...]. There is no help in suggesting a choice criteria for one's own specific problem.
This book relies too heavily on manufacturers provided product information in several chapters. Recommend that if that is your interest depend upon the internet rather than this book if only for timeliness of data.
There is at least a 50 page section that attempts to summarize all state laws. Can't imagine why that is in the printed book. It is also on the cd-rom. A simpler chart showing each state code by chapter and verse and url would have been more helpful and more up to date.
There is a 63 page section on forms and charts that is also on the CD-ROM. A pdf file is used to capture the form as it was scanned from the book. The forms have the page number, chapter number and chapter title on the footer of every form. It would have been better if the format was something that was usable and could be customized by the reader. It is not. Some standard word processing format or spreadsheet format might have made the book worthwhile to get a tracking system started for purchasing, inventory or financial controls.
There are 32 pages of recipes for mixing drinks (about 5 to a page). I have seen bar tender recipe books at some bars, but have never seen one in an 11 3/4 by 8 3/4 inch format. If your bartenders need a book - this one is not the answer.
This book is better described as an introductory overview of the business. There is enough there to learn something but the book is over-priced. If I could have found a copy to have browsed through, I would not have bought it for my needs. If you are serious about opening a bar go ahead and buy this book. But you better plan on buying several others too.

(More customer reviews)"So Much More Than A Cookbook", a statement on the back cover of "Cooking Around the Calendar With Kids", is an accurate description of this delightful source book. The introduction explains the reasons for our food choices including weather, holidays, location, harvest times, and family traditions. The author uses the simple means of cooking to incorporate a variety of important skills for children. These skills range from learning about healthy eating, kitchen safety, sports nutrition and the changing seasons to spending quality time with family members (including dad!). Children are taught to give of themselves (while also raising self esteem) by making simple holiday food gifts such as honey butter, spice mix, soup mix, or chocolate chip cookies in a jar. Each page is 'jam packed' with simple, healthy recipes and wonderful ideas. This book is a valuable resource for anyone in contact with young children whether a child care provider, parent, grandparent or next door neighbor.

(More customer reviews)OK, I happen to be a relative, but that has nothing to do with my review of this book. Well, maybe a little, but the fact is, I'm no bartender. I don't have the know-how to mix drinks properly and I found this book REALLY easy to use. The arrangement by types of liquor make this guide truly idiot proof (no pun intended!).
It's a great bar companion especially when my more liquor adventurous guests are around and they want a drink even they don't know how to make.
Kudos to Amy for creating such a simple yet so useful guide!

In fact, it's easy-to-use format is terrific for we regular folks who love to entertain. Colorful, lively, ultimately useful, this is a fine book.

Salad People and More Real Recipes: A New Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up Review

(More customer reviews)This cookbook is a real gem in the world of children's cookbooks. All of the kids' cookbooks I have seen in the past are heavily laden with sugar, chocolate, and more sugar. This one focuses on simple, healthy recipes such as "Cool Cucumber Soup" with cucumber, mint, honey, and yogurt; or "Foccacia" made with storebought pizza crust, olive oil, and rosemary.
The format is wonderful, with 2 pages for the adult to preread, followed by 2 pages of picture directions, simple enough for a 3 yr. old to "read."
I feel good about sharing these recipes with my kids (ages 5 and 3) and I don't have to worry about inducing a euphoric sugar high! My only complaint is that the kids aren't thrilled with most of the recipes... they took one sip of the cucumber soup and said, "Yuck!" They liked the foccacia but picked off the rosemary. But I will keep trying!

(More customer reviews)Thank you for a wonderful book that gives us outside of North America an opportunity to create awesome menus and by extension meals with what we have. I live in Jamaica and was inspired by each menu. It is summer but I follwed the Easter Brunch menu slavishly. I enjoyed the Wine Lovers Evening and was delighted to find a things to do with all the wine corks I have been saving.
I believe a strength of this book is the instructions which feel more like suggestions which you just fall into and you do and they make the entire evening a success. There may well be other books that do this but I would say that this book is moving to the head of my class of my over 60 cook books.

(More customer reviews)I have a few different bar books because I love to throw parties. When we have a party, we put all our different liquors, mixers and garnishes on a table in the middle of the room. Then we make lots of coasters that have different drink recipes on them and let people make their own drinks. Not only does it make it easier for us the hosts, it encourages people at the party to talk to each other and compare drinks. This margarita book is perfect for that. We are having a party in two weeks and it may very well be a Margarita party with this book being the basis. The photography is gorgeous and I want to scan the images to make the coasters. Also, there are so many different colors of margaritas; if your party has a color theme, it is easy to pick out appropriate recipes. On top of that, the book is only $10.00. What a deal. I am happy to add it to my collection and with it's pretty cover, it will be facing outward on my bookshelf. And I highly recommend the Midori Margarita!

Bartending For Dummies (For Dummies (Cooking)) Review

(More customer reviews)A while ago I decided to take up bartending as a hobby. I got a drink guide, but that's all it was: a drink guide. Bartending for Dummies does what all the other For Dummies books do: it takes you by the hand, and assumes nothing. This book first teaches you about the tools of the trade, teaching you things like how to properly open champagne and wine, what glass to use, etc. Then it gives you info and history on all the popular drinks (whisky, beer, rum etc.) It gives you mixing tips, and then a whole lot of drink reccipes. It has a chapter with tables telling you what kind of liquer and mixers you'll need for a party with X amount of people, along with a list of what your humble but equipt home bar should have. It also has a great chapter on mixing layered drinks.As a bartender, I am far from pro, but now I have a little skill I can use when friends come over. The book is informative, precise, and very very helpful.
