diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide) Review

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over 400 pages of tips, techniques, a massive section on drinks (with pictures), spirits reviews and a guide to the worlds best cocktail bars. Heavy enough to qualify as a weapon in most jurisdictions, it is solidly bound, well laid out, and printed in a large format. So unlike most drinks books, it is easy to read, nicely indexed in various ways, and can be used as a reference for years to come without falling apart.
As a repository of all cocktail knowledge and wisdom it easily surpasses the Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (long considered an industry standard manual and now in its 66th edition), in quality, depth, breadth and sheer numbers of cocktails. If you are going to buy any cocktail book, this is the one to have.

This book has everything you need to properly tend bar at home. More than just recipies, it contains explinations of terms and what makes Bourbon different from Southern Comfort and Scotch from Irish Whiskey. It tells you what liquers you need to stock, and which ones you might want to try. The whole book is writen with a sense of humor, but it never losses sight of what is important. I highly recomend it!

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide Review

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Seagram's book is an OK book. It reminds me a lot of the Mr. Boston book. Unlike one of the reviewer's below I could not find "Caesar" in the book-maybe there is a newer addition than the 1995 version I have (although this seems to be the one that Amazon is selling). I also could not find some of the popular drinks like "Bellini" or "Caipirinha." I like the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide much better. Pulpfoto's review below says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide is A to Z like a dictionary so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. It seems pretty straight forward to me. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category.

The Modern Mixologist: Contemporary Classic Cocktails

I got this for my mixologist-in-training (amateur) husband who owns as least 4 different cocktail/mixology books and receives IMBIBE magazine. He has met his match in this book! It has raised the bar! It has asked him to move beyond all of the information he has already absorbed on how to "construct" a cocktail to begin seeing cocktail-making as an art form. I would say it asks you to start seeing it as chemistry meets high cuisine in a glass. The author uses a grid to introduce each season's best ingredients and what liquors go best with them. He gives you ideas for what flavors pair well and he gives you all kinds of recipes. He also gives you a list of what tools you will need to make drinks from beginner level through advanced. It also has PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES... a beautiful book with lovely lessons, great info and delicious recipes. Well written- a great read for someone who is interested in learning more about drink making from scratch- even a beginner with curiosity will get the basics, including history of the cocktail and info on various spirits. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who just wants a cocktail recipe book-- you'll be asked to buy WAY too many obscure and expensive liquors and ingredients for the new and inventive drink recipes provided! Get a basic book and once you feel bored, move on to something like this :)

The Art of the Bar: Cocktails Inspired by the Classics Review

The Art of the Bar: Cocktails Inspired by the Classics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A must have for home bartenders that want to maintain a consummate menu in their bar. The book discusses unique ingredients, their uses, and even gives the recipes for various drinks served at the Absinthe Brasserie and Bar in San Francisco.
Why use Maraschino cherries in your bar when you can make homemade Brandied Cherries? Need to sweeten things up a little there are multiple syrups such as the simple syrup or even a balsamic syrup.
Don't be mistaken, this is neither a long read or an in-depth study of Mixology. At the same time, it is not just a recipe book without a soul. The gentlemen that wrote the book provided a perfect balance of ingredients to come up with a cocktail that they have proudly named "The Art of the Bar".
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

From Tokyo to New York, a cocktail renaissance is happening as "bar chefs" create delicious elixirs worthy of their kitchen counterparts. An epicenter of this barroom artistry can be found at the Absinthe Brasserie & Bar in San Francisco (a city that spends more money per capita on alcohol than any other in the country). Bartenders Jeff Hollinger and Bob Schwartz share their artisan approach for stunning creations that unveil a new spectrum of flavors. Fresh herbs and even aromatic lavender are deftly used to augment classic and new cocktail recipes. Syrups and mixes are carefully crafted from scratch, ensuring small-batch perfection and a harmony of flavors. Acclaimed photographer Frankie Frankeny captures their virtuoso mixing performances with a refreshing take on the cocktail, creating a showpiece for any living room.

Bartending For Dummies (For Dummies (Cooking)) Review

Bartending For Dummies (For Dummies (Cooking))
Average Reviews:

A while ago I decided to take up bartending as a hobby. I got a drink guide, but that's all it was: a drink guide. Bartending for Dummies does what all the other For Dummies books do: it takes you by the hand, and assumes nothing. This book first teaches you about the tools of the trade, teaching you things like how to properly open champagne and wine, what glass to use, etc. Then it gives you info and history on all the popular drinks (whisky, beer, rum etc.) It gives you mixing tips, and then a whole lot of drink reccipes. It has a chapter with tables telling you what kind of liquer and mixers you'll need for a party with X amount of people, along with a list of what your humble but equipt home bar should have. It also has a great chapter on mixing layered drinks. As a bartender, I am far from pro, but now I have a little skill I can use when friends come over. The book is informative, precise, and very very helpful.

Market-Fresh Mixology: Cocktails for Every Season

As a cocktail lover, I found this book a bit disappointing. The drinks are pretty, and the recipes do call for fresh ingredients. I have no doubt that they are tasty and would be big hits at upscale restaurants and bars. However, as someone who appreciates a wide variety of liquors and liqueurs as cocktail ingredients, it is disappointing that nearly all these drinks call for flavored vodka and juice. I was hoping for a little more variety, and a little less garnish.

Mr. Boston: Official Bartender's Guide Review

Mr. Boston: Official Bartender's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The new updated version now shows the full influence of the resurgence of the great American cocktail. The author hits all the right marks in how to prepare a cocktail properly, such as insisting one only use fresh-squeezed lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit juices.
There are a few peculiarities that are shocking - the author states Old Tom gin is no longer available, which is just bizarre; it is available all over the country and is indeed still produced. Hayman's Old Tom Gin is one. There is also a Manhatta recipe that appears to be a mis-print. Surely the author doesn't intend for a Manhattan of 1 1/2 oz whiskey, 1/2 vermouth, and agostura bitters. It most likely is meant to read 2 1/2oz rye or bourbon, 1oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters... Unless he just likes a 2 oz manhattan.
The organization by alcohol is a little strange too. Where does one put a drink that contains equal parts gin, vermouth and campari? Organization alphabetically or by drink classification would work better.
The recipes are good & one can use them knowing he or she will enjoy the outcome.
It may not be the standard it was in the heyday of the cocktail, but it's making it's way back. I look forward to better organized, more accurate versions in the future! Better proofreading & more attention to detail will make it the standard it used to be.

The Joy of Mixology: The Consummate Guide to the Bartender's Craft Review

The Joy of Mixology: The Consummate Guide to the Bartender's Craft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Your average cocktail/bartender book is usually just the result of somebody gathering together as many recipes as they can find, prefacing it with the obligatory "how to stock your home bar" chapter, then selecting "File / Print..." Is it any wonder then that people these days are confused as to what a Martini really is?
Thankfully, Gary Regan has shown us that a mixology book can be far more then we have come to expect.
In "The Joy of Mixology", Gary lays out for us the results of what obviously has been many years of research into what cocktails really are, and how to make them properly. First he covers the common topics such as history, bartending, garnishes, glassware, but with far more interesting information then you most likely have seen elsewhere. Mr. Regan then dives into laying out the various styles of cocktails and mixed drinks, and how to understand them in ways that focus on the proper and well-balanced construction of each style. There is a lot of meat in how he organizes his lists, and a wealth of information behind their proper construction.
Cocktails really don't need to be as confusing as they seem to be to most people. This book goes a long way in not only making sense of the large array of cocktail selections available, but also in bringing to light the potentials of a "Quality" cocktail experience.

An original book on the craft of mixology is a rare gem. Gary Regan's The Joy of Mixology is such a gem, one whose genius lies in Regan's breakthrough system for categorizing drinks that helps bartenders—both professionals and amateurs alike—not only to remember drink recipes but also to invent their own. For example, once you understand that the Margarita is a member of the New Orleans Sour Family, you'll instantly see that a Kamikaze is just a vodka-based Margarita; a Cosmopolitan follows the same formula, with some cranberry juice thrown in for color. Similarly, the Manhattan and the Rob Roy, both members of the French-Italian family, are variations on the whiskey-vermouth-bitters formula. In this way Regan brings a whole new understanding to the world of cocktails and how to make them. Not only will you learn how to make standard cocktails, you'll actually learn to feel your way through making a drink, thereby attaining the skills needed to create concoctions of your own. And as Regan explains methods for mixing drinks, how to choose bartenders' wares and select spirits and liqueurs, and the origins of many cocktails, you'll feel as though you're behind the bar with him, learning from a master. Plus, his charming and detailed history of mixed drinks raises this far above the standard cocktail guide fare. With more than 350 drink recipes, The Joy of Mixology is the ultimate bar guide. Ground-breaking and authoritative, it's a must-have for anyone interested in the craft of the cocktail.
