Heavy enough to qualify as a weapon in most jurisdictions, it is solidly bound, well laid out, and printed in a large format. So unlike most drinks books, it is easy to read, nicely indexed in various ways, and can be used as a reference for years to come without falling apart.
As a repository of all cocktail knowledge and wisdom it easily surpasses the Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (long considered an industry standard manual and now in its 66th edition), in quality, depth, breadth and sheer numbers of cocktails. If you are going to buy any cocktail book, this is the one to have.

The Ultimate Little Martini Book (Ultimate Little Drinks Book) Review

(More customer reviews)Whether you just want a crisp cool drink to sip while on your deck, or are planning a party with tons of martini glasses to be filled, it's a great "go-to" book. We, personally, like to plan a gathering where we serve a "signature drink" when it's BYOB for a big bash and the focus is on food, as everyone gets to enjoy their own cocktail if they want, but try something new as well if they'd rather have that. This provides tons of options for a signature party drink or 1000.
It's a plus that name brands are suggested for each recipe, when needed. For example, if Finlandia Vodka is preferred in a certain recipe, that is noted, while Skyy Vodka may be the preference in another. Of course, you can use what you have at home instead, but I appreciate that they aren't plugging one certain brand in the book and really think about brand preference if it does matter to you. I don't always follow it...but it's there.
The book is set up alphabetically by drink name and they aren't just recipes from the author...the book is full of signature drinks from bars and restaurants that have a popular drink as well.
It's a little book and very thick...interspersed with cartoons featuring the martini.
I rarely look for a certain drink in the book...it's a tad more fun to just go through it and find something new to try...thus far, whatever we've tried we have enjoyed.
Conclusion: If it's a martini recipe, odds are it's in here. Simple recipes that are easy to follow from traditional to exotic.

(More customer reviews)I have enjoyed the whole "littloe black book..." series, but there the best has to be either the martini or the cocktail book.
With such useful quotes as "if the Lord hadn't inteded a three martini lunch why did he put so many olive trees in the holy land", you can now go back to work sloshed and informed. The pages are thick and stand up to hanging around on my counter while I try mixing martinis.

Not only does Wondrich dispel lots of myths about Jerry Thomas, and many, many cocktails--the birth of the Sazerac, for instance--he does it with such wit, turning phrase after phrase in the manner of a master wordsmith. It's a bloody delightful read.

Buy this book for yourself, and buy this book for anyone and everyone you know. Even if they have no interest in the main subject matter--and what are you doing hanging out with people like that, anyway?--if any of your friends has the slightest interest in American social history they will be absolutely spellbound as they travel back in time with Dave and watch illustrious quaffers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries doing what they did best: Imbibing.
Wondrich also translates recipes from Thomas' books, and from other books of the same period. He takes them to pieces, examines them thoroughly, and puts them back together so that we can sip a taste of the past. Our copy of the book is already splashed with bitters . . .

Wondrich has shown us all how it should be done. Congrats, Dave.

I love the clear, organized layout, the list for stocking a proper bar, the simple explanations, the inspired drink names (Barefoot in Bali) and the brightly colored photos. I want to buy this for all my friends with summer birthdays along with some cute martini glasses or have a summer backyard party.
i can highly recommend this book for anyone who aspires to more than just uncorking a bottle as a way of entertaining their guests.

(More customer reviews)This book has a great variety of martini recipes - I'm usually a fan of basic dirty martinis, but there are so many options for interesting drinks in here, I'm looking forward to branching out and trying them all. It's a great book to use if you're throwing a party, since there are drinks in every color, flavor, and for every season. So far I've tried the Pineapple Champagne martini, which was really good. The book also has a ton of really beautiful photos.

If you're stocking your own bar there are lists of what and how much to buy (including alcohol, mixers, and extras), what tools to have on hand (types of glasses, spoons, strainers--who knew?). There's even a chapter on really starting a bar--from business plan through OSHA regs and promotions.
As for recipes, the book has 1500 of them, from A Bat and a Ball to Zuma Buma, with a separate section for non-alcoholic drinks. Over 200 pages filled with recipes! None are indexed, only alphabetized, so if you're looking for various martinis--from apple to vodka, you could be skimming pages for awhile.
The book starts with the basics about liquor, like the difference between Haitian and Jamaican rum, how wines should be served, etc., There's even a chapter on drinking games and toasts--what more could you want? Everything you need to be a fantastic bartender is right here.
