diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide) Review

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over 400 pages of tips, techniques, a massive section on drinks (with pictures), spirits reviews and a guide to the worlds best cocktail bars. Heavy enough to qualify as a weapon in most jurisdictions, it is solidly bound, well laid out, and printed in a large format. So unlike most drinks books, it is easy to read, nicely indexed in various ways, and can be used as a reference for years to come without falling apart.
As a repository of all cocktail knowledge and wisdom it easily surpasses the Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (long considered an industry standard manual and now in its 66th edition), in quality, depth, breadth and sheer numbers of cocktails. If you are going to buy any cocktail book, this is the one to have.

The Top Shelf Baker: Sweet Treats from a Well Stocked Bar
Average Reviews:

I had a chance to meet Mrs. Rink at the Cleveland Food Show as well as watch one of her demonstrations. I must say she is as fun as her cookie recipies are! Her energy and sense of humor made the presentation a blast to watch. I then purchased her book. I figured that my normal Christmas cookies could use a little "pick me up". (How many Peanut Butter cookies can I make?) I do not bake alot and would not even consider myself a novice, however the simplicity of her recipies was incredible! I have thus far made 4 different recipies from her book. They all have turned out great! I have gotten great feedback (no pun intended) from my bakery treats and people love it when I tell them the drink name each bakery item is modeled after. The cookies do really taste like their drink counterparts...( The drinks are something I do know about!) however you are not going to get arrested for a DUI after a few of these. I am looking forward to making more!! Say goodbye to boring cookies and Hello to fun creative baking with a twist!!!!

The Little Black Book of Shots and Shooters (Little Black Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent book to get a great party going. Under the assumption that you and your buddies want to get drunk and fast, this book contains everything from the classics to the unknowns. I've given almost every shot in this book a try (those that I haven't tried were simply because I lacked the exact ingredients) and everything ranges from pretty tasty to strange and exotic. I highly recommend if you want to impress your friends with some bartending knowledge of how to make some fun-filled shots. This hand-sized book will keep everyone happy (and some smiling on the floor). Take it with you if you're not hosting a party, it'll surely fit in just about any size pocket!
It also has a very useful strap along the back to save a favorite page, etc.

The New York Bartender's Guide: 1300 Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes for the Professional and the Home Review

The New York Bartender's Guide: 1300 Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes for the Professional and the Home
Average Reviews:

Let's be honest -- when it comes to mixed drinks, there's probably about two dozen that any bartender really needs to know, and although they drift in and out of popularity (I'm pretty sure there's a lot more caipirinhas and cosmos out there than old-fashioneds or rum flips), the top of the list isn't going to be very taxing on a bartender's memory. That, of course, is why we have bartender guides -- something that can be kept behind the bar next to the cash register in case a patron wants something that isn't that easy to remember.
This particular book is a nicely presented one, with color pictures and organized by spirit (with two indexes, one by drink, one by subject). I had some friends throw drink names at me and most of them came up in the book, so it's definitely got all the important ones. However, it is a rather conservative book -- apart from the fairly famous edgily-named ones like Sex on the Beach, a lot of the more twisted drinks I've heard of like the Apple F***er, the Adios Mother, and the Cement Mixer don't really show up in here, at least not under their real names. (You may have better luck with some of the more humorous ones like Bartending For Dummies or a shot book.)
Honestly there's nothing too terribly exciting going on in here, and for the most part it's probalby interchangeable with Mr. Boston or The Bartenders Black Book, or for that matter half a dozen other well-written, comprehensive bar guides. It's prettier than most bar books you'll find, with glossy pages and lots of color photography, so if you're the sort who likes to just browse things like this, it's an excellent choice for that. If you're in the market, try it out.

If you're looking for a good, general selection of drinks and cocktails from which to start your home bar -- and be thoroughly entertained in the bargain -- your search is over! You'll find expert mixology for some standard drinks, along with some little known or forgotten cocktails throughout 2oth Century history, up to a few of the latest, trendy drinks. Sprinkled with historical and cultural references, notable quotes, and just plain fun stuff, you'll enjoy more than a few laughs even before you start sampling recipes! The language is sometimes "R-rated", so the easily offended should step lightly.
The recipes in this book are not categorized alphabetically, but by "When You're In The Mood For...", "Special Occasions", "Drinks For Life Events", etc., which makes it supremely useful. There is an alphabetical index, plus an index by main spirit ingredient.
I laughed out loud at several spots; by far the most hilarious and entertaining mixology book I've ever encountered!

Start and Run a Money-Making Bar Review

Start and Run a Money-Making Bar

Just don't look at the cover (the cheeziest cover I think I've ever seen on a book; I literally had to tear mine off to avoid laughing or having any of its "uncoolness" rub off on me).
Anyway, I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California (Indochine on State Street) and bought this book when I was reading up in anticipation of starting a new restaurant (w/ a bar in it).
While the book assumes the reader knows little or nothing about the business, it has a wealth of information for readers of all levels of experience. I was apprised/reminded of numerous aspects of the biz that caused me to tweak my own bar (to largely sucessful result). Quite simply, this book made/saved me significant money.
I highly recommend.

The Professional Bar & Beverage Manager's Handbook: How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Bar, Tavern, and Nightclub: With Companion CD-ROM Review

The Professional Bar and Beverage Manager's Handbook: How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Bar, Tavern, and Nightclub: With Companion CD-ROM
Average Reviews:

Other than being a patron of Bars and Taverns I thought I knew very little of the business side of operating such an establishment. This 550 page very large-print book only made me a little bit smarter.
I would have been a lot happier if the book was half the price and all the large-print filler material and excess white space was deleted. More on that below.
I became a trustee of a non-profit service organization that runs an active 7 day a week social club. My responsibility is to audit the overall organization. I was hoping that I could find a book that would teach me enough specific details to understands the management side of purchasing, inventory, financial controls, and the segregation of financial responsibilities among employees to get the Food, Beer and Alcohol part of our operation on a sound business footing. The sub-title, "How to operate a financially successful bar ...", is misleading since those sections for my use are very weak.
The section on 'Bar Controls' is basically from the marketing descriptions from different equipment providers that I had previously read on the internet with a simple google on the topic. [...]. There is no help in suggesting a choice criteria for one's own specific problem.
This book relies too heavily on manufacturers provided product information in several chapters. Recommend that if that is your interest depend upon the internet rather than this book if only for timeliness of data.
There is at least a 50 page section that attempts to summarize all state laws. Can't imagine why that is in the printed book. It is also on the cd-rom. A simpler chart showing each state code by chapter and verse and url would have been more helpful and more up to date.
There is a 63 page section on forms and charts that is also on the CD-ROM. A pdf file is used to capture the form as it was scanned from the book. The forms have the page number, chapter number and chapter title on the footer of every form. It would have been better if the format was something that was usable and could be customized by the reader. It is not. Some standard word processing format or spreadsheet format might have made the book worthwhile to get a tracking system started for purchasing, inventory or financial controls.
There are 32 pages of recipes for mixing drinks (about 5 to a page). I have seen bar tender recipe books at some bars, but have never seen one in an 11 3/4 by 8 3/4 inch format. If your bartenders need a book - this one is not the answer.
This book is better described as an introductory overview of the business. There is enough there to learn something but the book is over-priced. If I could have found a copy to have browsed through, I would not have bought it for my needs. If you are serious about opening a bar go ahead and buy this book. But you better plan on buying several others too.

Mr. Boston Platinum Edition: 1,500 Recipes, Tools, and Techniques for the Master Mixologist Review

Mr. Boston Platinum Edition: 1,500 Recipes, Tools, and Techniques for the Master Mixologist
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was originally looking for a "regular" Mr. Boston book to arm myself with drink recipes for the occasional entertaining my wife and I do at our home. The book had been recommended to me by several friends as being the best bar guide available so I came to Amazon to begin my search. It was here I discovered Mr. Boston Platinum Edition. I ordered the book, it arrived quickly and I'm very impressed.
The book contains a lot more information than just drink recipes. It is an intersesting read and I was surprised to see a history of the origin of a lot of popular drinks. I love a good Manhattan and now I know the city, the "inventor" and the bar where this drink was developed. I also know the difference in the ingredients, what makes whiskey bourbon, rye, etc.
Many of the drinks in Mr. Boston have variations and they are listed with the reasons for the differences. I even know why a drink should be either shaken or stirred.
What I really like besides all the recipes is the section on essential home bar equipment. I have already looked at the web sites suggested in the book and started to order the equipment I need to outfit our new home bar.
The recipes have been contributed by many professional "mixologists" and it is evident that they take pride in their profession.
The book itself is very nice looking and well constructed. The ringed binder is sturdy and the book lay flat so I can read it while my hands are full of bottles and strainers.
This is the perfect book for me, being a beginner, and I highly recommend it for the home bar owner or for professional bartenter who is interested in the right way or a new way to mix a drink and arming himself with many interesting facts to relate to his customers.

I hire and train bartenders for two resteraunts and a night club. This is the only book I currenlty allow my bartenders to use behind our bars. The glossary and ingredient index are very helpful. This book has helped greatly in getting some consistency back among my bartenders. I have run across only a couple of problems with it. The binding. If this book had been spiral bound it would be much easier to actually use while working. Because it is in a paperback format it is more of a reference than a tool. The life expectency of any paperback behind a busy bar is about one week. Glossy or laminated pages would extend it's life. I'm sure that cost is a factor with both of these problems, but any working bartender would gladly spend a few more dollars and consider it an investment.

The Art of the Bar: Cocktails Inspired by the Classics
Average Reviews:

A must have for home bartenders that want to maintain a consummate menu in their bar. The book discusses unique ingredients, their uses, and even gives the recipes for various drinks served at the Absinthe Brasserie and Bar in San Francisco.
Why use Maraschino cherries in your bar when you can make homemade Brandied Cherries? Need to sweeten things up a little there are multiple syrups such as the simple syrup or even a balsamic syrup.
Don't be mistaken, this is neither a long read or an in-depth study of Mixology. At the same time, it is not just a recipe book without a soul. The gentlemen that wrote the book provided a perfect balance of ingredients to come up with a cocktail that they have proudly named "The Art of the Bar".
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

From Tokyo to New York, a cocktail renaissance is happening as "bar chefs" create delicious elixirs worthy of their kitchen counterparts. An epicenter of this barroom artistry can be found at the Absinthe Brasserie & Bar in San Francisco (a city that spends more money per capita on alcohol than any other in the country). Bartenders Jeff Hollinger and Bob Schwartz share their artisan approach for stunning creations that unveil a new spectrum of flavors. Fresh herbs and even aromatic lavender are deftly used to augment classic and new cocktail recipes. Syrups and mixes are carefully crafted from scratch, ensuring small-batch perfection and a harmony of flavors. Acclaimed photographer Frankie Frankeny captures their virtuoso mixing performances with a refreshing take on the cocktail, creating a showpiece for any living room.
