I've never written an Amazon review before, but I have to rave about Joanne's tequila-infused cooking! Last night I was fortunate enough to hear her speak at a book signing-demonstration at the Tyler Florence store here in Mill Valley, Ca.
During the course of her presentation, some assistants were serving samples of food from the recipes in the book. When I tasted Joanne's GUACAMOLE SOUP I was F L O O R E D! It was just sublime. Buy the book if for no other reason than to get that recipe!
All hyperbole aside, Joanne knows her tequila and she knows how to create a tasty but DOABLE recipe that brings out the best in the liquor and the food ingredients. I'm a die-hard fan from now on.

The New TequilaTequila has come a long way since the days of salt, shot, lime, repeat. With tequila consumption on the rise, people are choosing tequila on more occasions, experimenting with new labels, and learning to appreciate the nuances of flavor. TEQUILA is an all-in-one reference for the top-shelf tequila connoisseur, with chapters on the history and lore of tequila, insight into how tequila is made, an exploration of the agave fields of Jalisco, and a drinker's guide to the four types of tequila: blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo. James Beard Award—winning author and chef Joanne Weir takes tequila beyond the margarita (although she opens the book with the very best margarita recipe) to a wide range of drink and food recipes. TEQUILA features more than 35 cocktails from her own repertoire, as well as contributions from some of the top tequila bar-tenders in the country, including classics like the Sangrita and La Batanga and novel variations like the Cable Car No. 2 and the Surly Temple. Weir also presents more than 20 tequila-infused sides, mains, and desserts, from Gazpacho with Drunken Prawns to Bay Scallop Ceviche to Tequilamisu. Join a new generation of aficionados for a celebration of the agave plant's most spirited and fiery creation, along with new and innovative ways to appreciate tequila.

This book has everything you need to properly tend bar at home. More than just recipies, it contains explinations of terms and what makes Bourbon different from Southern Comfort and Scotch from Irish Whiskey. It tells you what liquers you need to stock, and which ones you might want to try. The whole book is writen with a sense of humor, but it never losses sight of what is important. I highly recomend it!

Seagram's New Official Bartender's Guide Review

The Seagram's book is an OK book. It reminds me a lot of the Mr. Boston book. Unlike one of the reviewer's below I could not find "Caesar" in the book-maybe there is a newer addition than the 1995 version I have (although this seems to be the one that Amazon is selling). I also could not find some of the popular drinks like "Bellini" or "Caipirinha." I like the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide much better. Pulpfoto's review below says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide is A to Z like a dictionary so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. It seems pretty straight forward to me. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category.

The New York Bartender's Guide: 1300 Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes for the Professional and the Home Review

The New York Bartender's Guide: 1300 Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Drink Recipes for the Professional and the Home
Average Reviews:

Let's be honest -- when it comes to mixed drinks, there's probably about two dozen that any bartender really needs to know, and although they drift in and out of popularity (I'm pretty sure there's a lot more caipirinhas and cosmos out there than old-fashioneds or rum flips), the top of the list isn't going to be very taxing on a bartender's memory. That, of course, is why we have bartender guides -- something that can be kept behind the bar next to the cash register in case a patron wants something that isn't that easy to remember.
This particular book is a nicely presented one, with color pictures and organized by spirit (with two indexes, one by drink, one by subject). I had some friends throw drink names at me and most of them came up in the book, so it's definitely got all the important ones. However, it is a rather conservative book -- apart from the fairly famous edgily-named ones like Sex on the Beach, a lot of the more twisted drinks I've heard of like the Apple F***er, the Adios Mother, and the Cement Mixer don't really show up in here, at least not under their real names. (You may have better luck with some of the more humorous ones like Bartending For Dummies or a shot book.)
Honestly there's nothing too terribly exciting going on in here, and for the most part it's probalby interchangeable with Mr. Boston or The Bartenders Black Book, or for that matter half a dozen other well-written, comprehensive bar guides. It's prettier than most bar books you'll find, with glossy pages and lots of color photography, so if you're the sort who likes to just browse things like this, it's an excellent choice for that. If you're in the market, try it out.

The Everything Bartender's Book: Your complete guide to cocktails, martinis, mixed drinks, and more (Everything (Cooking)) Review

The Everything Bartender's Book: Your complete guide to cocktails, martinis, mixed drinks, and more (Everything (Cooking))

Let me start by saying that this book was very helpful. It could, and should, have been better. My preference would have have been to include a little more text. The book is recipe heavy (the banner does say "Includes 1,000 Recipes!" after all), but I would have liked more explanatory text as to the differences between the different styles of alcohols. They list the ales, but nothing about what they taste like. List the three types of rums but don't mention 151 or spiced rum, but they are used in recipes. There are about 35 pages at the beginning and two or three pages at the beginning of each chapter. I would have liked about 50% more.
Another annoyance is the treatment of liqueurs. Pages 86 and 88 mention the flavors of various liqueurs, but it's in paragraph rather than table form. And many are missing. Adding to the confusion, many recipes call for a liqueur by type and others by brand. I make cosmos with triple sec and the book says to use Cointreau. I understand Cointreau is a brand of triple sec, but the book should have demystified this. A table of all liqueurs and brands, with appropriate substitutions would have been very helpful.
My biggest pet peeve stems from page xii, "Top 10 Things Bartenders Should Know". Number 7, "You don't have to memorize hundreds of recipes to be a bartender. There are only about fifty recipes to know and all the rest are spinoffs from those." Very true and a very good point, but if they wanted to push that agenda they should have grouped the variations together. Case in point, the Cosmopolitan. There are 146 vodka recipes listed, but 24 are different versions of the Cosmo, alphabetized by flavor. And in almost all cases, the only difference is the flavor of the vodka. The Seabreeze and Baybreeze are variations of each other (pineapple juice vs. grapefruit juice) yet there are twenty versions of EACH. I suppose the siren song of "1,000 Recipes" was just too strong.
Sounds like a tough review but I rally do like the book. It overcomes the fact that there is a typo in the very first recipe (page 35 lists brandy twice and omits sherry). I learned a lot from the book and will use many of the recipes. A better index, some useful tables, and better information about liqueurs would have made it almost perfect. If they wanted to limit pages, they could have eliminated the foolish chapter on hangover cures.

The Complete Bartender (Updated) Review

I hire and train bartenders for two resteraunts and a night club. This is the only book I currenlty allow my bartenders to use behind our bars. The glossary and ingredient index are very helpful. This book has helped greatly in getting some consistency back among my bartenders. I have run across only a couple of problems with it. The binding. If this book had been spiral bound it would be much easier to actually use while working. Because it is in a paperback format it is more of a reference than a tool. The life expectency of any paperback behind a busy bar is about one week. Glossy or laminated pages would extend it's life. I'm sure that cost is a factor with both of these problems, but any working bartender would gladly spend a few more dollars and consider it an investment.
