Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology Review

Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology

Just so were on the same page, this book is on smoking, as opposed to be purely another book on BBQ. Smoking is a technique that takes time and patience and don't expect to get things perfect the first several tries. McPeake opens the book by discussing different types of smokers. McPeake says bigger is not better. I would also add that more expensive is not necessarily better either as you can achieve great results with an inexpensive water smoker. No smoker? No problem. McPeake also explains how you can use your kettle grill...even your gas grill for smoking and still make great smoked BBQ. It does work well with a gas grill once you get your technique down. McPeake provides a list of different wood types and the tastes they will provide. I love apple wood with chicken, it gives it a great flavor. In additon to the techniques which I consider the most valuable section, there's chapters on meat selection, temperatures, rubs, etc. Fully 1/2 the book is technique oriented before te 2nd half gets into some recipes. Very good, funamental and advanced smoking book.

1,000 Vegetarian Recipes Review

My mother in-law bought me this book shortly after I married her son. I think she was a little worried that he wouldn't eat well because he married a vegetarian. Our first year of marriage I used only this cookbook and a few recipes my mom had given me. I can't tell you how exciting it was to sit down, read through a section of the book, write a grocery list for the items I would need, write out a dinner menu for the whole week and then call my friends to tell them what I was fixing on each night and ask them what sounded good to them so they could join us for dinner. I did this for several months until my evenings were filled with other activities. (Eating was definitely an activity when it came to using this book.) I have enjoyed every recipe I have used from this book. And they're so easy!! Here are a few of my recommendations (I don't have page numbers in front of me): The Barbecue Red Beans, Corn and Rice; Manicotti; Fajitas; Falafel; Hummus; Black Bean Hummus; and so many more. My only problem with some of the recipes is that I'm not a big salt eater and so I changed a few of the measurements on some recipes. And also, because she uses a lot of cheese (which is my favorite food) I gained a lot of weight that year. I do love the fact that she doesn't suggest using lowfat or non-fat foods to make the recipes but use caution. This is a "must have" cookbook if you love eating really good food!!

Not just for vegetarians, there's never been a better time for this award-winning book! Carol Gelles, one of the best-known authorities on the subject, offers hundreds of appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, and more, proving that vegetarian cuisine is anything but boring. The flavor combinations are limitless, drawing on the ingredients and spices from every international cuisine. Discussions of vegetables, grains, beans, and soyfoods are interspersed throughout the recipes, making the book easy enough for beginners to follow. And every recipe is coded as lacto-vegetarian (some dairy products), ovo-vegetarian (some egg products), or vegan (made without dairy or meat products).

101 Margaritas Review

101 Margaritas

I have a few different bar books because I love to throw parties. When we have a party, we put all our different liquors, mixers and garnishes on a table in the middle of the room. Then we make lots of coasters that have different drink recipes on them and let people make their own drinks. Not only does it make it easier for us the hosts, it encourages people at the party to talk to each other and compare drinks. This margarita book is perfect for that. We are having a party in two weeks and it may very well be a Margarita party with this book being the basis. The photography is gorgeous and I want to scan the images to make the coasters. Also, there are so many different colors of margaritas; if your party has a color theme, it is easy to pick out appropriate recipes. On top of that, the book is only $10.00. What a deal. I am happy to add it to my collection and with it's pretty cover, it will be facing outward on my bookshelf. And I highly recommend the Midori Margarita!

Received the book this morning and have already prepared a soup and sandwich combo. Modified the "Good Luck Greens and Beans" into a soup by adding chicken stock and a little Parmesan. Could not resist the
"Croque Monsieur". Both were easy and very tasty just like the previous book's offerings. The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook: 150 Delicious Recipes Using Only Foods from the World's Greatest Grocery Store Reading the recipes is like being in class...you can just hear her talking. Funny, informative and helpful regarding TJ's products; things in the pantry and, more importantly, what to hoard. I recommend this for newbies and established cooks. We can all use a fresh suggestion or shake up the rut we sometimes get into. This will make perfect Christmas/Holiday gifts for all. The photography is beautiful but I'm sure there will be some who think there is not enough of it. My original book is dog-eared; to me a sign of being well loved. It won't take long for this one to become the same!
Now, where's my Guinness for those cupcakes.....?

101 Sangrias and Pitcher Drinks Review

101 Sangrias and Pitcher Drinks
Average Reviews:

This book is probably the best Sangria Book on the market to date. It offers simple step by step explanations on how to carry out the delishous recipies. And, I'll let the cat out of the bag, the restaurant that I used to bartend at used this book for its reciepies. So whether or not your a pro bottle spinning drink mixer or family person who likes hosting get togethers, the recipies in this book will make people think you are a pro because the exposions of flavors will be something they've never tasted or purchased. The sangrias were so popular we began selling them by pitchers and pitchers to go. Keep in mind, many of the reciepes require that the fruits and alcohols sit for hours or even days to allow the natrual flavors and sugars to merge, this is possibly the biggest secret to making a succesful sangria or pitcher drink so plan ahead. Trust me these recipies are tastbud approved!
