Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes Review

Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a cookbook collection that exceeds five hundred titles. Ten of my books are from Pillsbury and I have never been disappointed. When I received a card from Pillsbury announcing the newest in their collection, I immediately ordered it.
Pillsbury and the slow cooker are a great match. The recipes are easy to put together with ingredients that you probably have on hand or are readily available, and what could be easier than cooking in a slow cooker? I have already prepared several of the recipes and I am looking forward to trying more of them. The Turkey and Bacon Wild Rice Casserole was a big hit. Hearty Steak and Tater Soup brought ooh's and aah's at work too. The slow cooker is particularly good with lean cuts of beef. For this, try Beef Brisket with Cranberry Gravy or Carmelized Onion Pot Roast. Actually try them BOTH as they are scrumptious!
For readers new to using a slow cooker, Pillsbury shares ten 'secrets' for using the appliance successfully. There are five sections in the book covering main dishes, poultry, soups, stews and chiles, sandwiches and vegetables and side dishes. There are 140 recipes in total and many have illustrations. Each recipe is accompanied by Nutritional Information and a sidebar offering tips and serving suggestions.
Although a bit smaller than some of the other books in the collection, the Pillsbury Doughboy Slow Cooker Recipes is outstanding in quality. It's a big hit in my kitchen...it will be one of your favorites as well!!

In between are Busy-Day Chicken and Turkey, with recipes like Thai Peanut Chicken, which is great for casual entertaining; Super Soups, Stews and Chilies, including Spicy Vegetarian Chili; and Slow-Cooked Sandwiches, like So-Easy Sloppy Joes. With this much variety, you are certain to please everyone in the family. Each of the 140 easy-to-follow recipes includes a useful sidebar with a tip for serve-with items, suggestions on how the kids can help, or ideas to make it special. I visited my 25-year old son in Georgia; I live in Colorado. He works 12 hour days and eats out all the time. I was determined to get him a slow cooker, so he could have a real meal when he got home. I took my cookbooks with me to Georgia. I got the slow cooker and we tried several recipies from this book and another; and, needless to say, he was impressed. Before I left I re-ordered this book for myself (plus another new book of course) and gave him mine. He is pleased, I am happy, and he is eating much healthier now!

Busy People's Low-Fat Cookbook Review

Busy People's Low-Fat Cookbook

I bought this cookbook about a week and 1/2 ago. I have cooked out of it nonstop (breakfast, lunch and dinner) since I received it. If you are looking to eat low fat and not give up taste, and not spend a lot of time in the kitchen, this book is it!!!! The recipes are super easy (all 30 minutes or less, and 7 ingredients or less), and all very low fat and good! My family hasn't been disappointed yet. I recommend the pineapple snack cake, it takes 2 minutes to make, 20 minutes to bake and tastes just like pineapple upside down cake with only 1 gram of fat!!!! Try this book, it is worth it!

The Complete Crockery Cookbook: Create Spectacular Meals with Your Slowcooker (The Complete Crockpot Cookbook, 1) Review

The Complete Crockery Cookbook: Create Spectacular Meals with Your Slowcooker (The Complete Crockpot Cookbook, 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is very disappointing. My main complaint is that many of the recipes call for ingredients such as frozen vegetables, canned soup, mayonnaise, and one which actually calls for an entire bottle of Catalina salad dressing. This really is not my style of cooking. Another reviewer commented that a lot of recipes need something done throughout the cooking process or are partially cooked on the stove before being put into the Crockpot. This was a big turn off for me too. I suggest trying a different book.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Slow Cooker Cooking Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Slow Cooker Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've always found the Complete Idiot's Guides to be a mixed-bag; some I liked and some I didn't. This one, I liked very much! This book claims to have over 220 recipes, and I believe it, there are too many to count. First off, the book is organized into seven sections - 1) A Fast Course in Slow Cooking (a good quick start), 2) Enticing Appetizers, 3) Satisfying Soups, 4) Stews to Savor, 5) Crock Around the Clock (main courses), 6) Healthful but Homey (seafoods, vegetarian and others), and 7) Grand Finales (desserts). Each of the recipes comes complete with estimates on preparation and cooking time plus number of servings, list of ingredients, step-by-step directions, and some extra little hints and warnings.
My wife and I found this to be a nice book, with easy to read and understand instructions. So far, we have tried to Chicken Paprikash, and Short Ribs with Rosemary - both of which were excellent. So, if you are also on the go, and want to use some slow cooking to save time, then get this book!

Cafe Brenda Cookbook: Seafood and Vegetarian Cuisine Review

Cafe Brenda Cookbook: Seafood and Vegetarian Cuisine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a brief time working at Cafe Brenda, and I bought the cookbook while working there. I've worked my way through just about every recipe, and 90% of them were wonderful - the recipes are full of flavor, interesting, satisfying, and a great place to begin exploring a variety of international flavors. I particularly love the soup and dessert recipes. The almond cake with chocolate ganache makes a wonderful birthday cake, the maple pot de creme is a wonderful and easy way to end a dinner party with friends, and the variety of soup recipes make use of all the seasons with wonderful results. I do have to say that the fish recipes are generally a bit more creative than the vegetarian entrees, though I've made the vegetarian and vegan croquette recipes (Brenda's signature creations) many times and received enthusiastic feedback from my family and friends. I've given this book as a gift many times with a lot of good feedback. It's also a plus that not many people know about the book, so the recipes aren't dishes that are made over and over again by people who cook primarily vegetarian and have worn out the books by Deborah Madison and Molly Katzen, great though they may be. Hope you enjoy it.

Hamlyn All Colour 200 Slow Cooker Recipes (Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook) Review

Hamlyn All Colour 200 Slow Cooker Recipes (Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although titled 200 slow cooker recipes there are actually 104 main recipes the others which make up the 200 are slight variations often changing one ingredient however still fantastic value for money. It is a small book 5 ½" by 6 ½ "with the picture of the completed dish on the right hand page and instructions on the left hand page. As well as the instructions section there 5 other main sections giving recipes for; Breakfasts & Light Bites; Meat, Poultry & Game; Fish & Seafood; Vegetables; Deserts, Drinks & Preserves: What more could you want.
There is a useful instruction section explaining hints and tips on using a slow cooker and mentions that all recipes are for 3.5 litre (6 pint) slow cookers but it does explain how to vary the ingredients for the other two sizes of slow cookers.
It is as well to follow the recipes in detail at the first attempt, we did not use vegetable suet to make dumplings on the first attempt and these were well underdone.(Cidered Pork with Sage Dumplings) the only one we had any problems with, we have not tried them all, was the Beef and Root Vegetable Hotpot; The instructions said press the potatoes into the stock and the picture does show them on the top of the dish however this resulted in the potatoes being undercooked. Unless the liquid is above the level of the potatoes they do not cook properly. However this worked well with sweet potatoes in the Rancheros Pie which also asked for them to be sliced and placed on top.
Favourite dish so far "Pork, Orange & Star Anise"

500 Heart-Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes: Comfort Food Favorites That Both Your Family and Doctor Will Love Review

500 Heart-Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes: Comfort Food Favorites That Both Your Family and Doctor Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Several months ago, I discovered slow cooking through my local library. I borrowed some books and purchased a 4 QT. Hamilton Beach slow cooker (which I really like!). Because I have cut way down on my salt intake, I am sensitive to excess sodium and try to avoid recipes that include processed food. So, I was very excited when the "500 Heart-Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes" book came out. I have tried several of the recipes (and am cooking one right now -- and it smells great!)...and I'd say that this book is very good but... I feel that one piece of information is missing...none of the recipes indicate what size cooker is recommended (for each recipe).
Since I am fairly new to slow cooking, I find it extremely helpful to know what size cooker I need to use (before I start putting ingredients in). In one recipe, I ran out of room and had to leave an ingredient out. In another recipe, I guessed right that it needed less than a 2 QT cooker, but it's really best not to have to make these guesses. Plus all the other slow cooker books that I have include this information.
To the author and publisher -- please include the recommended slow cooker size when you print the second edition. To anyone considering this book...if you're a good judge of cooker size, just by reading the recipe, you won't be disappointed in adding this book to your collection -- I still give it a thumbs up!

5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens Cooking)

(More customer reviews)
So our baby gets up every day at 4:30am, and by dinnertime, I'm ready for bed, too tired to stand let alone cook. My husband, while great at cleaning, is lousy at cooking, so I got a crock pot for my birthday.
I bought this book because it looked like the recipies were interesting, not just variations on beef stew.
WOW, the recipies are amazing in this book! I may never order pizza again. Everything is quick and easy to prepare, all the measurements and cook times are correct, and there are a bunch of different flavors to sample.
This cookbook also uses a lot of frozen vegetables in the recipies, which is a must for a busy family. The Mediterrinean Chicken is super yummy, very non-traditional for a crock pot. The Original Beef stew is so good my husband practically licked the bowl, and the Cola Pot Roast is fun to make and delicious to eat.
People think I'm crazy to use my crock pot so much, and then they taste the food, and all of the suddent they're dragging out their crock pots and using this cookbook as well.
By the way, many of the roast recipies ask you to brown the meat. It's super fast and easy, and definitely worth the trouble.

Slow Cooker: The Best Cookbook Ever with More Than 400 Easy-to-Make Recipes Review

Slow Cooker: The Best Cookbook Ever with More Than 400 Easy-to-Make Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Slow Cooker: The Best Cookbook Ever" has many excellent recipes and meal ideas, is well laid out, clear, and nicely photographed. Whether it will prove to be the "best cookbook ever" for you probably depends on how you use your slow cooker. I usually turn to mine on busy days when I have little time to cook and will be gone most of the day. I want to quickly combine a few ingredients with minimal fuss, clap the lid on, walk away, and come home eight or ten hours later to a ready-to-eat meal. Unfortunately, many of the recipes in this book require extensive preparation, cook for only three or four hours, and involve the slow cooker almost incidentally.
For example, the Asian Honey Wings, although they sound delicious, are all but finished before the slow cooker even makes an appearance. The wings are cooked in the oven while the sauce is prepared in a bowl, and the sauce and wings are then combined in the slow cooker and heated through. The book suggests serving them from the slow cooker to keep them warm. Heating and serving an already cooked dish from a slow cooker hardly qualifies as a slow-cooker recipe, and I don't really need a book to know that serving from a slow cooker is a good way to keep food warm.
Another typical example is a casserole for which the cook must first make 2 cups of cooked rice; chop several vegetables; have 3 cups of cooked, diced chicken at hand; and grate 2-1/2 cups of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. While the rice simmers on the stovetop, the cook sautés the vegetables in separate steps, then removes them to a bowl and adds several more ingredients to the pan to create a sauce. The rice and some of the vegetables are then combined with half the sauce in one bowl, and the chicken and other vegetables are combined with the rest of the sauce in another bowl. Finally, the rice, chicken, vegetables, and cheese are layered in the slow cooker and heated through. Frankly, if I have time for this level of involvement and kitchen mess, I'm just going to go ahead and cook a meal. Once again, the slow cooker seems to be involved only so this can be called a slow-cooker recipe.
A recipe for enchiladas calls for 17 different ingredients and 10 cooking steps before it is ready for the slow cooker - and then cooks only 3 hours. The cook can neither save time by using the slow cooker nor leave it unattended for the day.
There are some interesting suggestions, such as making snack mix or spiced nuts in the slow cooker in a way that is much simpler than the usual oven recipes. There are good dip recipes; again, no surprise that a slow cooker works well for warm dips, but new ideas for dips are always welcome.
I find myself using this cookbook as more of an idea book than a slow cooker reference. Leafing through, I find a recipe for something I like - cabbage rolls, say - see that it's just as much work as making them in the oven, and decide to make them soon - in the oven. One more thing: All of the recipes are sized for 6 to 10 servings; if you need to adjust the recipe to make fewer, that will add one more step.

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens)
Average Reviews:

Of the 400+ pages only 190 of them are of any use to me. I use a crockpot because it is simple and tasty cooking. So, I was expecting alot of main dish recipies. And I was also expecting them all to be for the crockpot. There is over 60 pages of recipes that do not use the crockpot. There is over 125 pages dedicated to beverages, soups, breads, and desserts. I have never met anyone who has made hot chocolate or apple bread in a crockpot. Of the 190 pages of worth. only 25 pages were the type of recipies that I was looking for. ie. the chop-it up and throw it in the pot type. everything else involved browning or braising or some other type of stove technique. I guess I'm just the kind of cook who doesn't want to screw around with browning anything. I bought this specifically because of the reviews on amazon. Hopefully this review will speak to those of you like me that are not chefs and are just looking for something easy and tasty to cook.
