Busy People's Down-Home Cooking Without the Down-Home Fat Review

Busy People's Down-Home Cooking Without the Down-Home Fat
Average Reviews:

Wow! With this book I can really cook. I'm not into the fancy stuff. This book lets you take normal everyday food and make it into a meal. This might not appeal to a gormet chef but for someone who hates to cook but has to, this is the ticket. It saves you so much time in the kitchen. I already have my favorites marked and my husband is always asking me when am I going to make that dish again.

I was familiar with this cookbook from a friend's copy. Just had to have one myself. Used several recipes out of it and all were good. Have used a crockpot for some of the casseroles that were supposed to be baked in the oven and they turned out delicious.

The Busy People's Fast and Frugal Cookbook Review

The Busy People's Fast and Frugal Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Any cookbook really has two things going on: the book itself, and the food it produces. This cookbook has so many advantages as a book that I'd like to be able to recommend it without hesitation. Recipes are sorted by prep time, so you can decide if you have 10 minutes to whip up some Hawaiian Sweet Potato soup, and the main dishes (including soups) are presented with a full menu. The book instructs you to set a timer before starting, and then gives you all the steps, and I found that by following the directions I was indeed able to get the meals on the table before the timer rang.
Each dish has a neatly sorted grocery list, and each main dish has a list for the entire suggested meal as well. Instructions are informal yet clear, nutrition information is clearly presented, and overall the book is so user-friendly that I think anyone will be able to succeed with it.
The recipes themselves are something else again. The author refers to these dishes as "down-home cooking" like your grandma used to make, and I guess it depends where you're from. Chipped beef on toast, candied vegetables, and eggs with sauerkraut are very exotic dishes to me. We're assured that these dishes are "delicious recipes that are healthy and easy on the budget," but it's hard to think of meals as healthy when they rely so heavily on things like pie filling and canned biscuits. In fact, cans feature very largely in these meals -- canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, and even canned meat.
I cooked from this cookbook for a weekend, and I certainly could have cooked fresh food more cheaply than these meals. We tried out a dessert made from graham crackers, pudding, and whipped topping which totaled $4.00 -- more than a homemade cake, and neither more healthy nor more delicious.
Still, if you don't know how to cook, or are determined not to spend more than 15 minutes getting dinner on the table, this book could save you from continual drive-through. And if this is the style of cooking you prefer, then these might be faster, cheaper, and conceivably even healthier alternatives to the way your granny cooked.

Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook Review

Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Typical to a Martha enterprise, this book is well-conceived, thoughtful, and gorgeously produced. It contains a wide variety of meals, arranged according to season. This concept allows the cook to find recipes for foods that are fresh in the market and make the most of what is in peak flavor. The recipes include familiar dishes with new twists and unique dishes that tempt. Unfortunately, the recipes seem not to have been tested adequately, as sometimes the amounts were off or the cooking times were wrong. This seems to be a problem in some of the recipes presented in the Martha Stewart Living magazine. Also, ... not all of these dishes are exactly quick. The criticism about underseasoning in the dishes is valid; final products were at times quite bland. In a cookbook de-emphasizing fats, use of herbs, spices, and seasonings becomes important. For an experienced cook with a critical eye, this may be a source for ideas. ...

Busy People's Low-Fat Cookbook Review

Busy People's Low-Fat Cookbook

I bought this cookbook about a week and 1/2 ago. I have cooked out of it nonstop (breakfast, lunch and dinner) since I received it. If you are looking to eat low fat and not give up taste, and not spend a lot of time in the kitchen, this book is it!!!! The recipes are super easy (all 30 minutes or less, and 7 ingredients or less), and all very low fat and good! My family hasn't been disappointed yet. I recommend the pineapple snack cake, it takes 2 minutes to make, 20 minutes to bake and tastes just like pineapple upside down cake with only 1 gram of fat!!!! Try this book, it is worth it!

Cooking Light Fresh Food Superfast: Over 280 all-new recipes, faster than ever Review

Cooking Light Fresh Food Superfast: Over 280 all-new recipes, faster than ever
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have the other two books in the series (Fresh Food Fast and Fresh Food Fast: Weeknight Meals) and I love them. They are my go to cookbooks and a generally cook at least one meal a week from them. Naturally, I purchased Fresh Food Superfast, thinking that it would be just as good as the others but there's only about 5 recipes that even caught my eye. I actually got nauseated as I flipped through the book.
I'm all for trying new foods and flavor combinations. I have no problem mixing fruit with meat with cheese, and other combinations that a more reserved cook might not be into. But there are just way too many wacky combinations for me. Nothing looked appealing. Everything in the book is either way too boring or way too obscure.
I guess what I am trying to say is this:
1.) The recipes in this book do not go from grocery bag to table faster than those in the other series.
2.) The other books are way better.
Therefore, you should buy the other books!

Having recently lost 35 pounds I need to maintain it and a friend recommended this cookbook. She said it was the best cookbook she has ever owned. Based on that recommendation, I bought the book and it is everything she said it was. Lots of great, tempting recipes that "real" people eat. I wouldn't hesitate recommending it. Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook Review

Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have Lyme disease for quite a while now and been in treatment for over a year-and-a-half. I had made great progress but suspected food allergies. I found Recipes for Repair at their website [...] and looked over the 4 phase plan.
The book starts with helpful information on the Lyme/inflammation connection which I found very helpful. At the beginning of each phase it lists the allowed foods in a simple format and explains how long one should stay in each phase.
Phase I was scary for me, I have to admit. It's basically a week of detox which means lots of fish and veggies. Much to my surprise, my husband and I loved the meals! Also, before starting phase I, I really looked over the food list to see what I could snack on and what I needed to prepare before-hand to make meal preparation easier. For instance, I made up the mayonnaise and almond meal. You will need to do this before each phase so that you are prepared to cook.
Phase II was a delight. It just adds more safe foods to phase I and my family and I found it to be delicious and doable. Phase III - even better. As of today I cannot do phase 4 which adds in wheat and dairy. I do use recipes from this book for about 4 times a week. Overall this has been one of the best cookbooks I've ever invested in. The pages are tattered from use which is a good sign!
If there is one drawback - if you are bedridden and tired, some of the recipes may be too long and involved. Sometimes I do recipes in chunks. I'll chop veggies and store in fridge or make double batches of rice for two recipes. I think of ways to get around that.
Overall, I feel healthier and better following this diet. I would highly recommend this cookbook if you have Lyme disease or any type of inflammatory condition.

5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens Cooking) Review

5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens Cooking)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So our baby gets up every day at 4:30am, and by dinnertime, I'm ready for bed, too tired to stand let alone cook. My husband, while great at cleaning, is lousy at cooking, so I got a crock pot for my birthday.
I bought this book because it looked like the recipies were interesting, not just variations on beef stew.
WOW, the recipies are amazing in this book! I may never order pizza again. Everything is quick and easy to prepare, all the measurements and cook times are correct, and there are a bunch of different flavors to sample.
This cookbook also uses a lot of frozen vegetables in the recipies, which is a must for a busy family. The Mediterrinean Chicken is super yummy, very non-traditional for a crock pot. The Original Beef stew is so good my husband practically licked the bowl, and the Cola Pot Roast is fun to make and delicious to eat.
People think I'm crazy to use my crock pot so much, and then they taste the food, and all of the suddent they're dragging out their crock pots and using this cookbook as well.
By the way, many of the roast recipies ask you to brown the meat. It's super fast and easy, and definitely worth the trouble.
