A Life in Balance: Delicious Plant-based Recipes for Optimal Health

For a complete review with photos of recipes I tried from A Life In Balance, please visit: [...]
I first came across Meg Wolff at the Huffington Post where she writes regularly, featuring stories about the positive impact of a plant-based diet on health, as well as anticancer recipes.
A Life In Balance is Meg Wolff's third book, this time a cookbook with a collection of easy, approachable plant-based recipes. For anyone who is new to a plant-based diet, or just trying to increase plant-based foods in their daily meals, Meg's cookbook is a terrific introduction.
Meg Wolff, a two-time cancer survivor (first bone cancer, then breast cancer), switched to a plant-based diet 12 years ago, after doctors gave her virtually no hope (she endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation).
This compact cookbook, published by Down East, offers over 120 easy to follow recipes, including 31 recipes from guest contributors, including Rory Freedman, bestselling author of Skinny Bitch, Rip Esselstyn, author of The Engine 2 Diet, and John Salley, three-time NBA champion.
The foreword is written by Dr. Colin Campbell, author of "The China Study," a study which provides scientific information on the overwhelming health benefits of eating a plant-based diet. Dr. Campbell writes, "Meg's book tells a real-life example of the power of a plant-based diet, not only to prevent but also to reverse chronic disease. We are reaching a tipping point, and a critical mass of success stories like Meg's is accumulating."
As Meg notes in her introduction, it only takes small steps to add up to better health over time. The recipes are easy to follow and range from basic recipes for beginners like Amazingly-Good-For-You Brown Rice and Oven-Roasted Veggies, to more adventurous recipes such as Black Bean and Corn Bread Casserole, and Sweet Potato and Arame Salad with Asian-Style Tartar Sauce. Sprinkled throughout the book are helpful tips, variations on recipes and notes, such as "Even Small Changes Can Make A Difference" and "Snacking Strategies."
The recipes are divided into seven sections: Grains, Bean and Bean Products (tofu, tempeh, seitan), Vegetables, Soups, Sea Vegetables, Salads, and Snacks and Desserts. I chose a handful of recipes to try, including several with ingredients I had either never tried before or was not that familiar with, such as delicata squash, arame, and tempeh. I also made a few recipes which were much more familiar, including Lemony Hummus and Glazed Brussel Sprouts.
I have to say that I was not a tempeh fan until I tried the recipe for Good Egg Café Tempeh Hash (contributed by Mary Ledue Paine, owner of The Pepperclub/Good Egg Café in Portland, Maine). This dish is one of Meg Wolff's favorite treats when she dines at this cafe, and now I know why. Another taste-altering dish was the Glazed Brussels Sprouts.
My 8-year old, who is not a brussels sprout fan, liked the sweet glaze on the sautéed brussels sprouts (he also gobbled up half of the Lemony Hummus as an afternoon snack). All of the recipes were easy to follow, and I was thrilled by the end of my mini cook fest to have an assortment of dishes to choose from for several meals to come.
I love Meg's inspirational and encouraging tone throughout her book. The clear and easy to follow recipes make taking steps towards a plant-based diet completely within reach.

Of the many vegetarian recipes books I own, this is the one I return to the most. The recipes are delicious, turn out well consistently and have ingredients that I would normally have on hand. The nutritional information is listed with every recipe, which makes it easy to see at a glance, and the opening chapters are very informative about healthy eating. The recipes include enough spices to give them wonderful flavour without being too hot. A practical and inspiring book.

Day by day and step by step, we are learning to eat healthier. Sheri and Brian Fisher have worked with our health for the last three years. We are learning to cook, prepare, and enjoy nutritious and delicious food without using milk products, white flour, white sugar, or meat. After being diagnosed with arthritis, and severe asthma, I am now symptom free and taking no medications (after being on 17 different types of allergy and asthma meds). I eat Sheri's granola every morning. I use her whole wheat bread recipe to make our bread. We use black beans and brown rice to top our salads. We feel better, sllep better, and enjoy much better health. Thank you, Fishers, for introducing such a new and rewarding way of living to us. After being married for 45 years, it has taken a lot of dedication and change to bring us to this point, but we are enjoying a healthier, happier, way of life.
Mike and Joyce
My wife uses 3 of Sheri Fisher's vegie books and we are enjoying more fruits and vegetables that ever before. Truly books worthy of investing in.
Growing up in suburban America, we always had meat and potatoes on the table. I can't say I didn't like Mom's cooking, because she was a wonderful cook. Our table was always set with what's refered to today as "comfort food". However, I now believe a healthier balance of foods is truly more "comfort".
We are grateful that Mrs. Fisher has taken the time, and energy, to create her books, and in turn helped us create our own better style of dinning. We highly recommend her books to all.

Quick and Easy Vegan Celebrations: 150 Great-Tasting Recipes Plus Festive Menus for Vegantastic Holidays and Get-Togethers All Through the Year (Quick and Easy (Experiment))

I never write reviews for cookbooks, but after making many recipes from this book, I am compelled to share the good news! This is a great book for every day- not just holidays. Her macaroni and cheese is ridiculously good and without a flake of nutritional yeast. It reminded me of Stouffer's in consistency and was delicious. I was really shocked that potatoes and carrots could come so close to real mac and cheese. My vegan toddler loved it (mac and cheese is the only food she misses from her (brief) omnivore days.) I was planning on freezing some for easy meals for my daughter when she's with Grandma, but we ended up eating it all in 48 hours! I can easily see me making this dish for omnivore friends- it doesn't have that weird "health food" taste that some mac and cheeses do.
I made the Green Bean Casserole for Thanksgiving, and I don't think anyone at the table knew it was vegan. The Southern Sweet Cornbread is now my husband's favorite recipe I make, and I loved the meatballs in the Kwanzaa section. My husband eats meat, but has asked me to make the Shepherd's Pie again. It was really easy and quite good. The Crispy Baked Tofu was great and very easy. My daughter and I will be making the Gingerbread Cookies soon.
I am super excited about having Christmas at my house this year and using the recipes from this book. I'm especially excited about the Agave-Glazed Acorn Squash. So far, everything I've made has been true to the "quick and easy" in the title. As a new vegan, I was afraid of ingredients like TVP (textured vegetable protein) or homemade seitan, but I'm positive I can do them both now! Thanks, Alicia!

The Type 2 Diabetes Diet Book, Fourth Edition Review

The Type 2 Diabetes Diet Book, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

Although I haven't read any of Dr. E's book thoroughly, I have been one of his patients. In Aug. 2008 I reached 196 lbs. having been only 128 lbs. just a few years earlier. I was frustrated at the continuous weight gain despite all attempts at dieting and exercising. Finally, my gynecologist referred me to Dr. E. who diagnosed my insulin resistance, sleep deprivation, etc. and put me on a diet program. It worked. I lost 6 lbs. the first week and a safe 1.5-2 lbs. each week after and have kept the weight off. More notably, I learned that my body is, indeed, insulin resistant and that insulin was responsible for my aches and pains, fatigue, etc. On day 2, I noticed a marked difference in morning aches and pains. And, by day 3, I was able to run down the stairs in the morning without hanging on to the railing.
I know that not everyone has the opportunity to see Dr. E personally. But, I feel that if you follow his advice in this book you will lose weight and get your insulin under control. I believe this because I gave a copy of the plan to a friend who has followed it and has also had success. This plan is truly unique. At first glance it can seem like another low carb, high protein diet. But it is not. It's more like, low carb, moderate protein with some secret weapons :) Best wishes!

Melissa's Everyday Cooking with Organic Produce: A Guide to Easy-to-Make Dishes with Fresh Organic Fruits and Vegetables Review

Melissa's Everyday Cooking with Organic Produce: A Guide to Easy-to-Make Dishes with Fresh Organic Fruits and Vegetables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a delight to open this book and learn more about organic fruits and vegetables. I saw this book listed on the NPR site as one of the top 10 summer cookbooks. Since following Cathy Thomas' articles in the Orange County Register I knew I would be in for a treat! She has a way of capturing her readers with a story -- and always interesting recipes.
Little did I know when I ordered it how much I would learn about each item listed. The produce is covered in an alphabetic format making it ever so easy to find information about a specific item. Then, each item starts with the same format: buying and storing, prep and use followed by item availability, serving suggestions and recipes that includes NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION.
Just browsing through I found some helpful hints, like how to store cilantro. I always find it discouraging when the cilantro spoils in a couple of days. Now I know how to store it so it will last 7 - 10 days. And did you know that using citrus zest from non-organic produce includes the wax. I never thought about that...now I do.
Another great feature is the listing in the front that includes seasonal availability of produce. Since I plan to give this as a gift for some non-California based family and friends I like that the produce listed is readily available nationwide.
Get this book for yourself, sit down with an organic seasonal fruit and enjoy the journey. You'll want to share the book -- and the treats you'll create from it.

Gary Null's Power Foods: The 15 Best Foods for Your Health Review

Gary Null's Power Foods: The 15 Best Foods for Your Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I completely agree with the authors concept of the 15 most nutritious foods to eat, I am disappointed at there only being 26 pages of actual information on why they are the best. The rest of the book gives you 300 recipes (That sound delicious)that you can use to create a healthy diet. The book is written for vegans with no animal products in any of the recipes. The pictures in the middle of the book make the meals look great. In the back of the book you will find a 7 day eating plan.
The 15 power foods are almonds, oranges, bananas, blueberries, onions, garlic, ginger, legumes, carrots, peppers, shiitake mushrooms, tomatoes, leafy greens, soy, and whole grains.
I recommend buying this book as a cook book after reading Gary Null's other books or after reading "Super Foods RX" by Steven Pratt his book goes into far more detail about why these foods are the best, "Super Foods RX" was a life changing book for me. This one is a cook book.

Lots of information packed into this book! Most recipes are fairly simple, however there are a few that require ingredients not easily accessible to all. A little planning ahead may be necessary. I like the wide variety of recipes and that there are some savory options included. It's also refreshing to see some recipes that don't include refined sugar in the ingredient list (good breakdown at the end of the book "Allergy and Suitability Information"). Overall, a nice addition to my recipe book collection!

Vegetarian Sports Nutrition Review

Vegetarian Sports Nutrition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a college sports dietitian, I have been using this book with my vegetarian athletes (and non-athletes) for some time now. I like the way the author uses a conversational tone to cover the scientific and evidence-based information. Most books with this caliber of information are very dry reading. She gives professional-level details to determine an athlete's nutrition needs, but also gives a more general means of calculating calories and foods to supply adequate carbs, protein and fats via the vegetarian pyramid.
My favorite part of the book is Chapter 14, with its many practical suggestions for quick and easy meals and snacks. I think that it, by itself, is worth the price of the book. The suggestions are great for busy vegetarians (which includes all athletes and most other non-athlete vegetarians I know). The nutrition athletes need is translated into foods they can easily get hold of, prepare (if necessary), and actually eat. The author does a great job of giving vegetarians lots of do-able options.

Cafe Flora Cookbook Review

Cafe Flora Cookbook

I wonder: what am I doing writing a review for a cookbook? I rarely write Amazon reviews and the few reviews I have written are related to a completely different genre of book. Plus, I've only recently taken a renewed interest in being in the kitchen - I don't suppose that makes me an "expert" by any stretch of the imagination.
But I wanted to share my opinion of this book with other readers. It's fantastic and the recipes are delicious.
Never before have I enjoyed a cookbook so much. Reading through the table of contents was enough to get my palate fired up. At the time of this writing, I've created over a dozen of the recipes in this book, and each one is a sure winner, not one is a reject. I might have tried more recipes by now, but the temptation to go back to a dish I've already tried is just too great. (We've done the Coconut Tofu with Sweet Chili Dipping sauce four times, now.)
How about a really wonderful Portobello Wellington with Madeira Sauce? Now THAT was a Thanksgiving dinner! Yam and Mushroom Enchiladas with Smoky Tomato Sauce? Spinach, Mushroom, and Gorgonzola in Puff Pastry with Red Pepper Coulis? Despite what I - a carnivore - have always thought, vegetarian cooking can be great. That's a claim I've never been able to make regarding any other vegetarian or vegan cookbook.
The book is extremely well laid out with timing suggestions, "prepare ahead" ideas, and handy tips for getting through the process without any unexpected surprises. Each recipe is preceded by a good description that makes you want to try it immediately. If a recipe has multiple components, each is presented as a logical and timed subsection of the overall plate.
I only wish I knew about this restaurant when I visited Seattle last year. Next time... next time.
Five Stars for the book that got me back into the kitchen after a long hiatus. Feel free to contact me with any questions, but I'll be busy cooking up the next Flora meal.

Cafe Brenda Cookbook: Seafood and Vegetarian Cuisine Review

Cafe Brenda Cookbook: Seafood and Vegetarian Cuisine
Average Reviews:

I spent a brief time working at Cafe Brenda, and I bought the cookbook while working there. I've worked my way through just about every recipe, and 90% of them were wonderful - the recipes are full of flavor, interesting, satisfying, and a great place to begin exploring a variety of international flavors. I particularly love the soup and dessert recipes. The almond cake with chocolate ganache makes a wonderful birthday cake, the maple pot de creme is a wonderful and easy way to end a dinner party with friends, and the variety of soup recipes make use of all the seasons with wonderful results. I do have to say that the fish recipes are generally a bit more creative than the vegetarian entrees, though I've made the vegetarian and vegan croquette recipes (Brenda's signature creations) many times and received enthusiastic feedback from my family and friends. I've given this book as a gift many times with a lot of good feedback. It's also a plus that not many people know about the book, so the recipes aren't dishes that are made over and over again by people who cook primarily vegetarian and have worn out the books by Deborah Madison and Molly Katzen, great though they may be. Hope you enjoy it.

The Complete Tassajara Cookbook: Recipes, Techniques, and Reflections from the Famed Zen Kitchen Review

The Complete Tassajara Cookbook: Recipes, Techniques, and Reflections from the Famed Zen Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a traditional cookbook. No pictures, lots of essays, some poetry, and basic recipes. What distinguishes it are Espe Brown's pontifications about cooking, zen, life. Like the movie, How To Cook Your Life, this book is an expression of Espe Brown's personality rather that his cooking expertise. The recipes are very basic - but I guess that's the point. He wants readers to cook by feel, by what they already know, rather than by measure and specific instructions. As I read many of the recipes, like the one for kidney bean chili, I thought, Wow, I already know how to do that.
I was also surprised that this wasn't a vegan or a health cookbook. Lots of the recipes call for eggs, milk, cheese, and oil. Not very au courant (the Engine 2 folks would have a fit), but I kind of like that about EB - he's got an acerbic (but loving) sense of humor - he can throw jabs at macrobiotics, and I'm sure at veganism. He's community-conscious and compassionate, but no food purist. Lots of vegan cookbooks seem rather self-righteous and humorless. EB's cookbook is imperfect, but meandering and fun.

Reviewed by Kam Aures for [...] (11/09)
"An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods: A Shopper's Companion" is a wonderful book filled with tons and tons of useful and interesting information about different kinds of foods. In the Introduction, Collins states, "Surrounded by processed, junk, and fast foods in grocery stores, on the job, and at the corner café, we are challenged to choose vital, minimally processed, healing foods. This guide strives to inspire through scientific research, ancient wisdom, common sense, and an increasing base of knowledge of therapeutic foods." (p.2) Indeed, I did find the book to be inspirational and will pay more attention to the food choices I make in the future. I love knowing exactly how a certain food benefits me and my family and have been known to look things up on the Internet for that very reason. Now, I can just look it up in this handy guide!
The facts presented in the book are quite interesting. For instance, did you know that "acai berry extract exposed to human leukemia cells killed between 45 and 85 percent of the cancerous cells" or that oregano might help you fight off a cold? These two tidbits of information are just the tip of the iceberg. Collins has compiled a great assortment of food items and their accompanying health benefits.
At the end of the book there is also a section that tells you what foods to eat to treat certain ailments and to maintain health. For instance, for dry skin one of the groups of food that would be beneficial to consume would be yellow/orange fruits and vegetables.
I absolutely loved this book and think that anyone who wants to take an active role in improving or maintaining his/her health would also enjoy "An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods- A Shopper's Companion." The only part of the book that could use improving is the cover. It looks very old-fashioned and like it is a book that was printed 40-50 years ago. I had to double-check inside to verify the copyright date. I am afraid that people may see it on the shelf and think that it is an older publication that doesn't contain the newest and up-to-date information when in fact it is a 2009 publication. Other than that, I think that Collins' book is fantastic and will prove to be extremely useful.

I bought this book while researching detoxes. It's 1 of 5 that I read.
Let me start with the positive feed-back:
1. It had some really good basic food/ nutrition information
2. It has tons of recipes, that sound good, and I will definitely try the juices when I get my juicer
3. It's very easy to read, like a really good article in a magazine
The cons
1. All of the plans are rather complicated (lots of menu items each day that take time to prepare)
2. There isn't an explantation of how the menu is created, so it's not easy to modify / simplify
3. The vegan "detox" lists honey (or agave nectar) and tortilla chips as menu options - honey's not vegan, and a fried food has no place on a detox in my opinion
4. The "detoxes" at the beginning seem more like diets/ lifestyle eating: "Mediterranean Detox" is just a sample of a normal healthy mediterranean diet
5. With the combination of food allergies in my house and our mostly vegetarian lifestyle, there were no complete meals I could find to use.
Overall it's an interesting nutrition/ diet book that will aide most people in making better lifestyle choices, but for someone who is already healthy by common standards, active and a good weight, this book doesn't serve much purpose.

This is my favorite vegetarian cookbook. The recipes are incredibly easy, and they are hearty and satisfying enough for a very cold climate. Plus, you can make them in great big quantities if you like, sometimes all in one pot, so that you can spend less time cooking and more time... EATING! And the recipies are definitely worth relishing. This book has the best nut loaf recipe ever.
