Food As Medicine: How to Use Diet, Vitamins, Juices, and Herbs for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life

"Your body has the ability to heal itself if you just give it a chance. Using food as medicine gives [you] the greatest chance of all to heal....What you eat can either prevent cancer and other chronic illnesses or help cause them....My number one recommendation is to eat a rainbow of fresh fruits and vegetables every day." Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.
FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent.
Dr. Khalsa writes a chapter about each of his seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy to help you restore balance to your body, mind and soul. They are:
1 Detoxify your body. (If fasting isn't for you, you can take two 450 mg aloe vera tablets at night or go on a monodiet.)
2 Go organic. ("The switch to organic food is vital if we are to save our environment.")
3 Limit or eliminate genetically engineered foods. (Examples include: aspartame, canola, corn, cotton, crook-necked yellow squash, dairy products, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, and tomatoes.)
4 Eat clean protein. (Buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, and venison are some non-traditional sources. I personally enjoy the latter very much. Choose chicken and fish--preferably wild salmon or other oily fish. Shark, swordfish and tuna also have potential problems with contamination--mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic. Also soy protein and definitely beans and legumes are great--they have almost no fat and are rich in fiber and good carbohydrates.)
5 Discover juicing and supplements. (I don't do this one because there is more fiber in the fruit than the juice and that is good if you want to avoid getting type 2 diabetes down the road.)
6 Cook consciously and eat mindfully. (Chew slowly, savor your food, sit down and relax and "remember that everything we eat comes from God, as do our health and healing.")
7 Make the transition to the yoga nutritional therapy diet. ("By following a plant-based diet, you will find that you have improved focus and higher productivity in your daily life.")
My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity."
Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

Zero Proof Cocktails: Alcohol-Free Beverages for Every Occasion Review

Zero Proof Cocktails: Alcohol-Free Beverages for Every Occasion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pretty little recipe book is meant for two main audiences: those who don't like the taste of alcohol (some of us are quite sensitive to it), and those who can't drink it (for example, those whose religions forbid it). This way, those who find themselves longing for the intricate and interesting taste experiences that alcohol drinkers can enjoy can get in on the fun. Some of the recipes are meant to duplicate the flavors of existing drinks or alcohols for people who can't drink alcohol but enjoy it, while other recipes are simply meant to be delicious drinks in their own right rather than knock-offs of existing cocktails. Some drinks come with suggestions for substituting in alcohol for those who want to make two drink versions for their drinking and non-drinking guests. For those people who can't touch a drop of alcohol, there are great tips to help you watch out for "hidden" alcohol content in some ingredients you might otherwise think to use.
When I think of "cocktails" I tend to think of things like margaritas and martinis, but Liz Scott has taken a much wider view on the term! She has divided her book into five types of drinks: elixirs and aperitifs, martinis and party cocktails, mealtime libations, dessert drinks, and nightcaps. She includes a foreword on ingredients and equipment that's quite thorough, even addressing things like the fact that "alcohol-free" wine and beer can legally contain up to 0.5% of alcohol--an important detail for those for whom alcohol is a matter of prohibition, not taste. Many of the recipes come with gorgeous photographs that will certainly whet your appetite!
Elixirs and aperitifs are meant as before-dinner drinks, and were originally created as medicinal beverages. Many of them include herbal ingredients, and the recipes in this chapter are surprising and diverse. Even though I don't like the taste of alcohol and thus knew the serious mock-alcohols wouldn't be my favorite drinks, I could tell by the taste of the one we made (a mock sherry) that it was good, just not my thing.
The "mocktails" in the martini & party cocktails chapter are imaginative and fun! Whether you prefer mojitos, margaritas, or coladas, in orange, mango, lime, or pineapple, you'll find something in here to whet your appetite. There's a variation on a champagne cocktail in here that's just divine.
Mealtime libations are designed, much the way wine is chosen, to complement certain foods or meals. Want some non-alcoholic mimosas to go with brunch? You've got `em! A white tea infusion makes an alternative to white wine, and a dry grape grigio is designed to pair with poultry. The strawberry white sangria is so good I could make that recipe alone over and over. If you'd normally serve a Zinfandel, try the pomegranate-based "pom zinfandel."
Of course plenty of the drinks in the preceding chapters would make fine desserts, but Zero-Proof Cocktails goes one better with an entire chapter of specific dessert drinks. How about hopscotch eggnog (it uses butterscotch syrup in place of schnapps), or a toasted almond cordial?
Since nightcaps are meant to help one sleep or aid in post-dinner digestion, you'll find both mock versions of traditional nightcaps (such as spiced apple brandywine, which of course doesn't have any real wine in it) and a few originals. The almond roca buona notte is simple and heavenly, much like a cup of warm milk. There's a sweet ginger tummy tea, and even a catnip tisane!
The only difficulty is that the recipes do call for many unusual ingredients. There is, however, a listing of resource websites in the back of the book that will definitely help. I found blood orange bitters at Williams-Sonoma, and sparkling grape juice in the Kosher aisle at the grocery store. Our local Whole Foods Market had the no-sugar-added white grape juice. Other recipes call for exotic fresh fruits or juices, flavor syrups, or teas, but as long as you're willing to order a few ingredients online you should be fine.

Detox for the Rest of Us: Safe and Easy Plans to Cleanse Your Body, Boost Your Metabolism, Lose Weight and Feel Great Review

Detox for the Rest of Us: Safe and Easy Plans to Cleanse Your Body, Boost Your Metabolism, Lose Weight and Feel Great
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book while researching detoxes. It's 1 of 5 that I read.
Let me start with the positive feed-back:
1. It had some really good basic food/ nutrition information
2. It has tons of recipes, that sound good, and I will definitely try the juices when I get my juicer
3. It's very easy to read, like a really good article in a magazine
The cons
1. All of the plans are rather complicated (lots of menu items each day that take time to prepare)
2. There isn't an explantation of how the menu is created, so it's not easy to modify / simplify
3. The vegan "detox" lists honey (or agave nectar) and tortilla chips as menu options - honey's not vegan, and a fried food has no place on a detox in my opinion
4. The "detoxes" at the beginning seem more like diets/ lifestyle eating: "Mediterranean Detox" is just a sample of a normal healthy mediterranean diet
5. With the combination of food allergies in my house and our mostly vegetarian lifestyle, there were no complete meals I could find to use.
Overall it's an interesting nutrition/ diet book that will aide most people in making better lifestyle choices, but for someone who is already healthy by common standards, active and a good weight, this book doesn't serve much purpose.

The Lemon Juice Diet Review

The Lemon Juice Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got this book after reading about it in Women's World Magazine (WWM) recently, and I've already been adding a lot of lemon to my diet after reading the magazine. Lemon tastes sunny, healthy and delicious on almost everything, I've discovered! According to the article from October 27, 2008, "The Lemon Juice Diet" book by Theresa Cheung (a health journalist) explains that when we're low on C, we can't perform a key step in fat-burning process so we burn muscle instead of fat.

Muscle loss then leaves us flabbier and causes metabolism to drop. Drinking lemonade (made with natural lemons, of course) and squeezing real lemon juice on your meats, salads, desserts, and vegetables can help break this terrible cycle, the book explains. We also feel more energized when C levels are higher. Other fruits that are high in Vitamin C would be helpful, too, I'm sure. (I love to drink Vitamin Water, myself, because it's not too sweet or carbonated. Dragonfruit and Citrus are my favorites and are high in C.)

According to Arizona State Univ. Carol Johnson, Ph.D. who was also quoted in the article, sugar and Vitamin C fight for the same pathways to the bloodstream. So, if you have enough Vitamin C in your system, the vitamin enters the bloodstream ahead of sugar and lowers the rate that sugar is absorbed so you won't get sugar highs and lows. The Vitamin C will then also lower levels of fat-storage hormones, cravings, and appetite! Goodbye, fat! I can't wait to see how much healthier I feel in a month!

What is an easy way to detoxify your system and lose weight? Not fasting, not liquid or fad diets. The Lemon Juice Diet is a safe and delicious eating plan that goes far beyond the "Master Cleanse" program used by celebrities for quick, short-term fixes. Instead of just suggesting dieters drink a concoction of lemon juice, cayenne, and maple syrup, The Lemon Juice Diet starts there and then integrates lemon juice into a healthier, easy to maintain, long-term plan. Lemon is a natural powerhouse; its great flavor makes it an easy addition to your diet and its low glycemic index provides a steady stream of energy, without the sugar high and subsequent crash we get from high GI foods. The Lemon Juice Diet capitalizes on lemon juice's natural power to lower blood sugar, create a feeling of fullness, provide vitamin C and stimulate the liver for maximum fat-burning. Lemon juice can even boost immunity and brain function, fight cholesterol, and fire up your metabolism. With clear meal plans, delicious recipes and easy exercise tips, The Lemon Juice Diet is a quick and easy way to long-lasting good health.

This book is a must for everyone who wants to maintain good health as well as focus on recipes to improve well-being. Having recently learned a little about the benefits of green tea, I'm happy to see suggestions which add some variety to this beverage. I've always been a fan of smoothies, and there are plenty in this little (but powerful) book.
Up until now I haven't used soy milk very much. But Anita Hirsch has included so many ways to prepare and blend this, that several are bound to become favorites.
I also appreciate seeing many other types of drink: soups and teas as well as refreshingly cold beverages. Drink To Your Health has already become a ready reference in my kitchen.

The Juice Lady's Live Food Lifestyle builds on what Cherie Calbom's recent book, The Juice Lady's Turbo Juice Diet, started. Known around the country as "the Juice Lady," nutrition expert Cherie Calbom explains the benefits of living foods (raw foods), based on new scientific research that shows that biophotons in plants carry light energy into our bodies, which helps our cells communicate with each other. Cooking food kills these biophotons and leaves the body craving the energy and nutrients it needs to function at a healthy, vibrant level. But you don't have to switch your diet to a 100 percent raw foods diet. By simply adding more raw foods to your diet, you can increase your body's intake of these beneficial nutrients.

In addition to a 64-page, four-color recipe section, shopping lists, menu plans, and other practical advice, the author presents a living foods lifestyle plan for conquering adrenal fatigue (which some health organizations are calling "the new American epidemic"), busting candida (yeast infections), achieving weight loss, boosting your immune system, balancing your thyroid function, and more. Fight illness and slow the aging process in your body by starting the Juice Lady's living foods lifestyle today!

Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Juices Review

Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Juices
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought this book as I was interested in finding out the different healing properties of various fruits and vegetables. And I was quite pleased with the setup of the book-basically the book is organized by vegetable/fruit, with each entry including the history of the subject, it's nutritional value, the different diseases,sicknesses,and/or conditions it's known to help, and ways of preparing it properly. I quickly found different juices/veggies/fruits that targeted the conditions I wanted, and I've since incorporated their juices into my routine. I"ve been quite happy with the results in particular with including the following(not all together but seperately and combined with other juices): celery, cucumber, cabbage, carrot, beet, and radish.
One thing I would like to clarify is that Heinerman seems to really encourage blender juicing, either with your own blender, or more importantly with a Vitamix, to really maintain alot of each veggie/fruit's nutritious value by including the pulp. I was very happy with this encouragement, as I own both a Vita Mix and Juiceman, and I personally think the Vita Mix is far superior. But, I do think it's important for the reader to understand that he favors blender juicing over extracted juicing-and as a result, many of his juices call for this type of juicing.

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit & Vegetable Juice Combinations Review

Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit and Vegetable Juice Combinations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Allow me to be blunt--I don't buy into the whole health-craze notion that juicing is the silver bullet for ultimate physical health and spiritual awakening. I'm just a no-frills, moderately healthy woman who wants to enjoy the luxury of fresh-squeezed juices in her own kitchen without having to pay a gourmet price for them. To that end, I splurged on a good but affordable juice extractor and bought this book to learn the basics of making homemade juices. As with everything I purchase online, I checked out other customers' reviews of various juicing information and cookbooks beforehand, and Rodnitzky's book appeared to contain what I needed without too much fru-fru, "juicing will change your life" craziness.
What I found when the book arrived was that not only does Ultimate Juicing provide all the basic information one needs to make healthy and delicious juices at home, it also avoids the pitfalls of hard-sell promotional content("these recipes will work best with such-and-such brand juice extractor") and extravagant expectations for juicing's health and/or spiritual benefits. In 8 concise, sensible chapters, Rodnitzky describes the nutritional value of fresh-made juices; proper selection, preparation, and storage of produce; juicer selection (without the hard-sell: the juicers are described in terms of operation with brand names mentioned only as examples); and recipes for basic, health-boosting, exotic, and alcoholic juice drinks.
The core information and excellent variety of recipes easily offset the silliness of the recipe titles, and the comprehensive index makes the book a handy reference for everyday use in the kitchen. I would recommend this book for veteran and novice juicers alike, regardless of their physical fitness or spiritual level.

Cherry Concentrate Sleep Aid(16 oz.) Review

Cherry Concentrate Sleep Aid(16 oz.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I received the product I was shocked to find the cap was not vacuum sealed. The description the seller gave on Amazon.com conveniently omits the fact that the bottle is cold filled. A cold-filled product must be shipped in a cooler with dry ice and immediatly refrigerated upon arrival in order to remain safe for ingestion. However, this product arrived in a regular cardboard box with bubble wrap. The information accompanying the product indicates the product is pasteurised, but that the product is cold filled. Without the sterile seal resulting from hot filling the bottle, bacteria and parasites will get in. Therefore, the pasteurisation is pretty much useless. Ingesting this product is risky, if not dangerous. When purchasing a tart cherry concentrate, be sure the product has been properly bottled. If I had only done a little more research on 'The Breath of Life' company, I wouldn't have wasted $21 + S&H on a product I ultimately had to pour down the drain.

I was an avid daily coffee drinker. one day I just did't feel good, but I dind't know why. This went on for days, and I decided to take things out of my diet one by one to see if it was something I was eating or drinking. I gave up coffee. After about 3 days I decided to order the Perfect Food Raw. Wow!! So glad I did.
I feel so good now, and this product gives me natural, wonderful energy all day long!!!!
when I was drinking coffee, I would get run down in the early evening. This products keeps me going till bedtime, but still able to go to sleep right away. This product does not taste the best, but I got used to the flavor. If you just mix with water it tastes like a big glass of spinach. If you mix with juice or make into a smoothie, even better. So glad I invested my money in this product. I don't want to be without!
