For a complete review with photos of recipes I tried from A Life In Balance, please visit: [...]
I first came across Meg Wolff at the Huffington Post where she writes regularly, featuring stories about the positive impact of a plant-based diet on health, as well as anticancer recipes.
A Life In Balance is Meg Wolff's third book, this time a cookbook with a collection of easy, approachable plant-based recipes. For anyone who is new to a plant-based diet, or just trying to increase plant-based foods in their daily meals, Meg's cookbook is a terrific introduction.
Meg Wolff, a two-time cancer survivor (first bone cancer, then breast cancer), switched to a plant-based diet 12 years ago, after doctors gave her virtually no hope (she endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation).
This compact cookbook, published by Down East, offers over 120 easy to follow recipes, including 31 recipes from guest contributors, including Rory Freedman, bestselling author of Skinny Bitch, Rip Esselstyn, author of The Engine 2 Diet, and John Salley, three-time NBA champion.
The foreword is written by Dr. Colin Campbell, author of "The China Study," a study which provides scientific information on the overwhelming health benefits of eating a plant-based diet. Dr. Campbell writes, "Meg's book tells a real-life example of the power of a plant-based diet, not only to prevent but also to reverse chronic disease. We are reaching a tipping point, and a critical mass of success stories like Meg's is accumulating."
As Meg notes in her introduction, it only takes small steps to add up to better health over time. The recipes are easy to follow and range from basic recipes for beginners like Amazingly-Good-For-You Brown Rice and Oven-Roasted Veggies, to more adventurous recipes such as Black Bean and Corn Bread Casserole, and Sweet Potato and Arame Salad with Asian-Style Tartar Sauce. Sprinkled throughout the book are helpful tips, variations on recipes and notes, such as "Even Small Changes Can Make A Difference" and "Snacking Strategies."
The recipes are divided into seven sections: Grains, Bean and Bean Products (tofu, tempeh, seitan), Vegetables, Soups, Sea Vegetables, Salads, and Snacks and Desserts. I chose a handful of recipes to try, including several with ingredients I had either never tried before or was not that familiar with, such as delicata squash, arame, and tempeh. I also made a few recipes which were much more familiar, including Lemony Hummus and Glazed Brussel Sprouts.
I have to say that I was not a tempeh fan until I tried the recipe for Good Egg Café Tempeh Hash (contributed by Mary Ledue Paine, owner of The Pepperclub/Good Egg Café in Portland, Maine). This dish is one of Meg Wolff's favorite treats when she dines at this cafe, and now I know why. Another taste-altering dish was the Glazed Brussels Sprouts.
My 8-year old, who is not a brussels sprout fan, liked the sweet glaze on the sautéed brussels sprouts (he also gobbled up half of the Lemony Hummus as an afternoon snack). All of the recipes were easy to follow, and I was thrilled by the end of my mini cook fest to have an assortment of dishes to choose from for several meals to come.
I love Meg's inspirational and encouraging tone throughout her book. The clear and easy to follow recipes make taking steps towards a plant-based diet completely within reach.

An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods: A Shopper's Reference Review

An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods: A Shopper's Reference

Reviewed by Kam Aures for [...] (11/09)
"An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods: A Shopper's Companion" is a wonderful book filled with tons and tons of useful and interesting information about different kinds of foods. In the Introduction, Collins states, "Surrounded by processed, junk, and fast foods in grocery stores, on the job, and at the corner café, we are challenged to choose vital, minimally processed, healing foods. This guide strives to inspire through scientific research, ancient wisdom, common sense, and an increasing base of knowledge of therapeutic foods." (p.2) Indeed, I did find the book to be inspirational and will pay more attention to the food choices I make in the future. I love knowing exactly how a certain food benefits me and my family and have been known to look things up on the Internet for that very reason. Now, I can just look it up in this handy guide!
The facts presented in the book are quite interesting. For instance, did you know that "acai berry extract exposed to human leukemia cells killed between 45 and 85 percent of the cancerous cells" or that oregano might help you fight off a cold? These two tidbits of information are just the tip of the iceberg. Collins has compiled a great assortment of food items and their accompanying health benefits.
At the end of the book there is also a section that tells you what foods to eat to treat certain ailments and to maintain health. For instance, for dry skin one of the groups of food that would be beneficial to consume would be yellow/orange fruits and vegetables.
I absolutely loved this book and think that anyone who wants to take an active role in improving or maintaining his/her health would also enjoy "An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods- A Shopper's Companion." The only part of the book that could use improving is the cover. It looks very old-fashioned and like it is a book that was printed 40-50 years ago. I had to double-check inside to verify the copyright date. I am afraid that people may see it on the shelf and think that it is an older publication that doesn't contain the newest and up-to-date information when in fact it is a 2009 publication. Other than that, I think that Collins' book is fantastic and will prove to be extremely useful.

Life Over Cancer: The Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment Review

Life Over Cancer: The Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment

Having had breast cancer twice and having read virtually every book out there on the subject, I have to say that this book sets the gold standard. For starters it is well wrtten, well organized and well researched which are qualities you rarely find in this type of book. Beyond this, it contains an incredible amount of immediately useful information while maintaining the recognititon that one size does not fit all-a practice that you often find in the medical community. In my own journey through this disease, I have observed that many clinics are attempting to incorporate integrative strategies, and even though they are moving in the right direction, they are missing the whole picture. It is so blatantly clear that Dr. Block has put together all the pieces in a truly comprehensive approach. I was so impressed with this book, I bought a copy for every doctor that I have interacted with in the past few years.
If you or a family member are dealing with cancer- pay attention- this book is the one you will refer to over and over again.

Betty Crocker's Living with Cancer Cookbook: Easy Recipes and Tips through Treatment and Beyond Review

Betty Crocker's Living with Cancer Cookbook: Easy Recipes and Tips through Treatment and Beyond
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having lived with cancer for 8 years and having had over one hundred treatments so far, I am thrilled to find a book that really talks to patients from patients who have lived through the same thing I am going through. This book shares real world recipes that are easy to eat and easy to make. In addition, the recipes have been eaten by patients who have the same problems I have had namely nausea, constipation, mouth sores, diarrhea and special diets such as neutropenia and low residue. The lists of recipes on pages 48 & 49 help me and family members chose food that I can eat AND that will benefit me for the side effects I am going through. This is incredibly encouraging!!! I especially appreciate the Q & A section from Dr. Ghosh and the diet plans for the special diets in the back of the book. Another great feature that I love are the special tips pages such as Snacks (p109), Humor and Healing (p149), Food during Treatments (p207), and Great Gifts (p223). I think this book would be the best gift to give to a cancer patient going through treatment. The best part of this book are the real quotes from real patients on nearly every recipe in the book. This book is a both a manual for Living with Cancer AND an excellent cookbook with tried and true recipes. Thanks Betty Crocker!!!

Natural Strategies For Cancer Patients Review

Natural Strategies For Cancer Patients
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because a friend of ours has prostate cancer and I wanted to be more informed. There are a lot of titles on the "shelf" in this area - nutrition and cancer, vitamins, supplements, megadoses, minerals, what to eat and what not to eat. Some of them have extraordinary claims for cures. There are a lot of philosophies on diet, which doesn't help a cancer patient when they need sound information rather than opinions and beliefs about food. Perhaps there would be less of this confusion if conventional medical treatment started to use nutrition as a part of mainstream cancer treatment.
I must say that I am really pleased with this book. As I get into it, the content gets better and better - a sign of a well informed and thorough piece of work. Dr Blaylock is very realistic about his purpose and doesn't make extraordinary claims. Instead he systematically reveals & explains the current research about vitamins and supplements, always in the context of cancer. He has a prevailing view that "fresh is best" and qualifies this. It seems to me he also has a hopeful tone, which is sometimes missing from practitioners.
I have always been interested in the findings and ideas of Dr Linus Pauling (eg see ISBN 094015921 and ISBN 0380702894) and also Dr Abram Hoffer (eg see ISBN 1550820788). Pauling has been decried by some (though the results of these two doctors' work speak for themselves). For me, this book represents in part a confirmation of their ideas, although the book is less prescriptive than the above and has a broader perspective on diet.
One of the central themes in this book is the immune system, and how to strengthen it. Blaylock is careful to indicate where certain foods or supplements actually encourage rather than inhibit cancer growth. He is also good at providing ammunition for the patient to be able to face some of the resistance that arises from physicians who are dubious about the role and value of nutrition in treatment.
I gave this book four stars not five, for a couple of reasons. If there had been a summary or tables or suggested outline programme to help the patient construct their own nutrition regime, this would have hit the bell! As it stands, I will dig through the chapters and index to glean a summary of points to put into an action plan. I was also hoping to find a website with some level of currency and discussion about the book - patients asking questions, an updated resource list, general advice, a blog perhaps, or supplemental material. In a word, 'support'. (See http://www.russellblaylockmd.com).
Overall, a very good book: readable, thorough, very comprehensive, practical and a good reference - recommended.

Foods to Fight Cancer: Essential foods to help prevent cancer Review

Foods to Fight Cancer: Essential foods to help prevent cancer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish I had read this book many years ago, as I am now a cancer survivor. However, since I intend to do my best to prevent a recurrence, it is still extremely valuable. What one reads in this book can also be read from the reports of the major cancer conferences in the country, such as the recent San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference in December.
This book begins with one of the best explanations of cancer and how it develops in our bodies that I have ever read. (And I have read a lot!) As it continues, it then relates to how food is at least equal to, if not better, than resorting to medications. How many times have we heard to eat five servings of vegetables and fruits each day? Which of them or both is meant by that admonition? This book makes it clear which and how many, and most importantly, why. Beautifully illustrated, well written for the lay person, a valuable tool in the fight not only against cancer, but for good health!
Just a follow up note: I also purchased Recipes for Foods to Fight Cancer, a recipe book produced by the same authors with celebrity chefs producing recipes using the recommended foods. (After all, how many of us know how to fix seaweed?) However, while it is attractive and interesting, I would have preferred more simple, every day recipes, rather than gourmet recipes. Stick with Foods to Fight Cancer and you'll have all the information you need.

Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating Review

Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Review Summary: You would have a hard time finding someone in a better position to write this book. Dr. Willett is chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and he heads some of the most important long-term studies of how nutrition affects health. In this up-to-date book, you will learn what the latest research shows about how eating, alcohol use, exercise and not smoking can help you avoid some diseases and birth defects. The book also explains how to read the latest health headlines and interpret the studies they are based on in the future. The lessons are summarized into a Healthy Eating Pyramid that you will find easy to understand, apply, and remember. The book contains a lot of helpful information about how to shop for more nutritious and healthful foods, and easy-to-follow recipes. I was particularly impressed with the summaries of the data on how weight and eating relate to various diseases. The book's only obvious flaw is that it does not attempt to refine the overall research into subsegment groups like those with different blood types, different genetic tendencies, age levels, and so forth.
Review: Like Sugar Busters! this book takes a serious look at overcoming the tendency for having too many fast-absorbed carbohydrates (whether as baked potatoes or as a soft drink) overload your blood with sugars and depress your metabolism. Unlike the "avoid fat at any cost" diets, this one says to avoid bad fats (especially trans fat and saturated fats) and to use helpful fats (like unsaturated fats that are liquid at room temperature). You are also encouraged to seek out nuts as a source of vegetable protein. There is also a good discussion of the healthiest ways to acquire your protein. The beef v. chicken v. fish discussion is especially helpful. He is skeptical about the need for much in the way of dairy products (I was shocked to realize how much glycemic loading, creating sugar in your blood, is caused by skim milk), but favors vitamin supplements as inexpensive insurance. He shows that calcium supplements may not do as much as you think to avoid fractures. Exercise and not smoking are encouraged. Raw foods and ones that are slow to digest (whole wheat, for example) are encouraged among the fruit and vegatables, in particular.
The pyramid is contrasted to the one that the USDA adopted in 1992, which seems to be almost totally wrong. Apparently, it was developed based on a very limited research base. Since then, much has been learned.
I enjoyed reading about all of the long-term studies being done now to understand the connections among eating, lifestyle, and health. The next 10 years should radically revise the lessons summarized here, as Dr. Willett is quick to point out. The conclusions in this book, for example, are based on individual studies of eating, drinking, exercise and health rather than the long-term studies that he supervises and follows. So even those studies may show new things.
In one part of the book, he discusses the pros and cons of some of the popular diets. Some simply have not been tested for health effects, and he is candid in sharing what is not known as well as what is.
This book will be especially valuable to those who like to get their information from highly credible sources, especially from within the medical community. I think I'll give a copy to my physician, who has been advising me to reduce fats in the wrong way!
Although I don't consider myself very helpful in shopping for or preparing food, I learned a lot from the book about how our family can acquire better building blocks for a healthier diet. After you finish reading this book, think about where else in your life you may be following outdated information. How can you check? A good example is probably related to what you think it costs parents for children to go to graduate school and get a Ph.D. In many schools, all the costs are subsidized, and the students even get a living wage. How does that change your plans for encouraging your children's education?

The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen: Nourishing, Big-Flavor Recipes for Cancer Treatment and Recovery Review

The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen: Nourishing, Big-Flavor Recipes for Cancer Treatment and Recovery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Cancer Fighting Kitchen" isn't just a cookbook; nor is another treatise on nutritional philosophy. It's indeed a cookbook, but so much more. Now that I've spent a couple of days with it, I know it's a nutritional arsenal with the kind of firepower that's perfect for what can seem like a tough assignment: cooking for someone going through cancer treatment. But whether you're cooking for someone who really needs to eat well in order to heal-- or you just want to understand how the food you eat influences your overall health and wellness, this is an amazing find. The recipes look and sound simple and delicious -- I can't wait to cook my way through all of them. This is the perfect follow-up to "One Bite at a Time" -- my first real friend in the kitchen when I needed a whole new way to look at cooking. I've cooked my way through it over the last three or four years, and I'm ready for the next step and this is it. Her Magic Mineral Broth is an amazing elixir that aids in whatever ails you -- I've made gallons of it, and now I'm thrilled to see two new takes on the basic recipe in this book.
This time Rebecca Katz offers us lots of easily digestible nutritional science along with recipes that look so tempting that I can almost taste and smell them just from the photos. But it is her disarming and sympathetic humor that leads you into each chapter and recipe with a little smile of recognition and a tidbit of personal insight. The Culinary Pharmacy section in her "Cancer fighting Toolkit" is worth the purchase price alone. It's a virtual encyclopedia of what we're all trying to learn about ingredients that add health-supportive magic to what we slave over in the kitchen. At a time when food TV is busily persuading us that cooking is something between a spectator sport and a reality show, this book points us back to what preparing food should be -- a loving spoonful of something special and sustaining. You don't need to be a patient or a caregiver to appreciate all that is in these pages, but if you are, this book is an amazing gift.

100% Pure Raw Aged Hawaiian Noni Juice, 32 Oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Noni Juice after hearing about the anti-aging benefits of noni on the Dr. Oz show. I bought this particular Noni juice because:
1. it's not diluted with any other juices,
2. it uses Hawaiian Noni - I don't know about the quality of foreign noni products, even if they claim to be organic (wonder if their organic certification is rigorous or can just be bought by paying the right people),
3. it comes in a glass bottle, so it doesn't leach like the plastic bottles do &
4. because I have purchased from Wai Lana before & like the quality of her products.
My whole family drinks it every morning on an empty stomach, except for my 13 year old - she just wouldn't drink it because of the taste, so I bought noni capsules also made by Wai Lana for her instead.
BTW, Wai Lana has a full line of Hawaiian noni products - noni soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion - all of which have brought shiny results for my skin & hair :-) I guess I'm drunk on Noni. Thanks Dr. Oz, thanks Wai Lana!

It doesnt taste great to me, but i bought it originally to help the osteoarthritis in both my knees. The pain is awful, and no pain killers help. I dont want to take a pill that has more side effects than is worth it. I do believe this juice is helping, but i also drink sour cherry juice. I drink the Mangosteen juice ice cold everyday, from a shot glass. You are much better off with this 100% juice than the combos and their sales pitches. You can tell this is the real thing. I am on my 4th bottle or so, i'd say. The only reason i didnt give it a 5 is because like i said, it tastes crappy. But it's for your health, after all.
