The Smoothies Deck: 50 Recipes for High-Energy Refreshment Cards Review

The Smoothies Deck: 50 Recipes for High-Energy Refreshment Cards
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a cookbook collector and this new "card deck" style was very appealing to me. There are many delicious recipes and this card format is very easy to use when mixing up drinks (can't close itself in the middle of my mixing the drink, etc.). The recipes are easy to read and storing this deck of recipe cards in its' own little box holder doesn't take up much space in the kitchen. It is easy to store right next to your drinking glasses inside the cabinet. Most cards have beautiful photographs of the featured smoothie. The cards show the photo or a graphic on one side and then the recipe is on the other side.
My complaints have to do with some formatting and organization issues. First, if these recipes were in a book they'd be categorized and separated by chapters. When these recipes transitioned to a card deck format, the author did not use any kind of organization method to distinguish one type of smoothie from the other. With the subtitle of the deck being "50 recipes for high-energy refreshment" I was surprised to see things with alcohol and sweet dessert-only type smoothies. (That subtitle is a bit deceiving, and given that this deck is shrink-wrapped in plastic preventing browsing before buying, it is a little more bothersome to me.) But that is fine, I am interested in these smoothies, but would rather see some kind of categorization. For example: every single card has a teal background with the words in white font. Why not color-code the backgrounds by category such as "sweet dessert smoothies", "meal in a glass (very nutritive in nature)", "high energy", and "alcoholic"? All that would be needed is one background color for each type. Another idea would be to have small icons/symbols to note which type of smoothie it is, possibly near the top of the card so we can shuffle through quickly for the type of drink we want to make. As they are now, the only way to tell one smoothie type from another is to read through the ingredient list.
Fun, useful and delicious recipes!

The Big Book of Low-Carb: 250 Simple, Delicious, Nutritious Recipes Review

The Big Book of Low-Carb: 250 Simple, Delicious, Nutritious Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Big Book Of Low-Carb is a book ready-made for low-carbers
Low-carb living need not be boring or even arduous when you know that there are virtually millions of ways to combine various ingredients to present the ultimate in low-carb dining. The opportunities are endless and can even be fun when you learn to start cooking this way all the time as part of your healthy lifestyle. Regardless of which low-carb plan you are following, there's a recipe for you to make and enjoy in The Big Book Of Low-Carb.
That's what co-authors Kitty Broihier, a registered dietician, and Kimberly Mayone, a recipe development consultant, wanted to acheive in this book of theirs. Loading it up with 250 recipes that are easy-to-make as well as entertaining to make and eat. The Big Book Of Low-Carb will certainly change the way you think about low-carb.
Broihier and Mayone admit up front that they wanted to offer a wide variety of options for low-carbers on every level from the "newbie" all the way to the "old pro" veterans who have been eating this way for years. The Big Book Of Low-Carb delivers with exquisite dishes that will get you out of your "low-carb rut" and will instead "keep you noshing happily on your low-carb program" forever.
Before you get to experience their amazing recipes, Broihier and Mayone provide some low-carb "basics" to help get you started off on the right foot. These helpful tips are there to give you guidance that could prove crucial as you prepare to become the king or queen of your low-carb cooking domain. Don't just foolishly skip over this part of the book because there are some really good techniques that frankly I hadn't even thought about before.
The authors also explain the definition of some popular low-carb cooking lingo that some people may not be aware of such as "resting foods," "net carbs," and the various kinds of portions. If you're gonna make these fine recipes, then you had better know what the authors are talking about ahead of time.
If your kitchen lacks the necessary tools to work with, then you might find yourself in a pinch when the book asks you to grate, whisk, or roll something. Not to worry because they help you out by sharing with you all the equipment and tools you will need to make these delighful recipes.
More importantly, they also explain what the basic foods are that you will want to keep on hand to make your low-carb cooking experience the best it can possibly be, including specific pantry items, refrigerated items, produce, meat and other necessary low-carb recipe essentials. Never start a recipe without knowing you have these items on hand. What a travesty that would be! :)
For all you cooking novices out there, The Big Book Of Low-Carb also includes a tutorial on various techniques that will help you along as you make these recipes. This section can also serve as a refresher course for you veterans who may not remember what it means to shock your vegetables, parboil your sausages, or zest those citrus fruits.
Once you start cooking, though, you'll feel right at home with these recipes and will soon make them a regular part of your favorite family times together. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, dinner, side dishes, salads, grilling, desserts and even beverages, The Big Book Of Low-Carb has it all for you and so much more.
I was really impressed with the layout of the book with the recipes all-encompassed on one page each with a creative description featuring specific hints for that recipe, a clear listing of the ingredients in red alongside the directions, as well as the complete nutritional content and serving size of the recipes at the bottom of the page.
However, except for the front cover of the book, there are no pictures of the finished recipes for you to see what your masterpiece low-carb creations will look like. But that just means you will be in for a BIG surprise (and a good one at that!) when you see how these recipes turn out. That's the fun part about making recipes like these and you should look forward to making each of these recipes for yourself. Don't be afraid to try a recipe you've never done before because Broihier and Mayone make it so simple for you to look like you've cooked this way for years.
The Big Book Of Low-Carb is one of those rare books that people who are genuinely livin' la vida low-carb NEED to have in their kitchen. My philosophy is this: you can NEVER have too many low-carb recipes! ENJOY!

Squeaky Gourmet: Simple. Clean. Food. Review

Squeaky Gourmet: Simple. Clean. Food.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first received this cookbook, I was very disappointed. From the reviews and the author's website, I had the impression that there would be a picture for each recipe. This is not true; there are few pictures. I thought that it was a bit overpriced for the fact that is it not hardcover. The first recipe I tried had a typo (Southwestern Burgers). I was disappointed when I was flipping through the recipes because none of that really got me excited to try them.
Nonetheless, I tried them anyway and everything I've tried has been delicious. Although the recipes are VERY simple, they are delicious. I thought they would be too boring because there are so little ingredients required, but this is not the case. If price is not an issue for you, I would purchase this cookbook.

The Low-Starch Diabetes Solution: Six Steps to Optimal Control of Your Adult-Onset (Type 2) Diabetes Review

The Low-Starch Diabetes Solution: Six Steps to Optimal Control of Your Adult-Onset (Type 2) Diabetes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this book. And I was very excited to get it too. I discovered on my own that I needed to follow a very low starch diet to control my blood sugar. So I was hoping this book would support my dietary changes that keep me in perfect control.
Not the case. This doctor offers a low starch diet, but also is a BIG advocate of diabetes drugs and insulin. He throws in a chapter about exercise and then the sample diets are HORRIBLE for a diabetic. In one sample dinner he has you eating a cup of grapes. If I eat more than 5 grapes I get a BS spike. He has you drinking a lot of milk. MILK!! even whole milk puts my BS so high I have to go work out for an hour to get it back down.
He says "sugar" is not the culprit....it's starch. However, all of his "sweet" recipes have Splenda in them. He then goes on to say it is o.k. to have a small amount of sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth. With a disclaimer that if you find sugar addict, you better skip this allowance. Geez...sugar is one of the most addictive substances on earth. If I had a handful of jellybeans after dinner like he says I can...I'd be in a coma....and wanting more later after the fog head wore off.
Here is his advice:
Low starch diet
Metaformin (as soon as possible...just ignore the nasty side effects it can have)
Exercise
Insulin
That is the gist of the entire book. Poor poor.
The word "solution" indicates you have found an answer. Something that works. He attaches it to "low-starch" when in fact his diet would not work without the exercise and copious amounts of drugs he says you should take.
His sample diets would have me on insulin.
He talks about his recipes and says there is no alternative to gluten. That is utter BS. 10 minutes on Google will have you tons of recipes that switch out gluten for other ingredients to make muffins, etc. And some are low carb (use eggs to hold it together). I am Celiac so I know this to be true. I make gluten free goodies for holidays once in awhile that people cant tell the difference!!
What has worked for me is: very low starch diet, low sugar fruits (berries), lots of green leafy veggies, no corn, no dairy, no grains, no rice, no beans, no potatoes, real fats such as coconut, butter, olive oil, meats, eggs, nuts and seeds. That's it!! Exercise everyday for 45 minutes. S.I.M.P.L.E. And most importantly no drugs or insulin.
VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Nothing groundbreaking. Nothing new. And NOT A SOLUTION to anything!

Fantastic Food with Splenda: 160 Great Recipes for Meals Low in Sugar, Carbohydrates, Fat, and Calories Review

Fantastic Food with Splenda: 160 Great Recipes for Meals Low in Sugar, Carbohydrates, Fat, and Calories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I came on line to order this amazing book for my friend on the South Beach Diet and was so suprised to see someone question it's accuracy because I am a Weight Watcher (points are in the book), and hate labels that lie! First of all in my copy, that I got a couple weeks back, the first recipe - Strawberry Lemonade- has the ingredients and I did not see a lot of typo's - so hers must have been a bad copy. I did find the 0 grams on the "compare" page - but it is clearly just an innocent mistake. The page highlights that Ms. Koch's Cinnamon Pancakes and Apple Butter Syrup have 11 grams of fat and then "compares" them to regular pancakes and syrup with 3 pats of butter. Since it clearly (in a box) says YOU SAVE: 9 grams of fat - along with 56 carbs, 195 calories and 7 points!!! by having hers instead of the "usual" pancakes and syrup you can see the fat grams on the high fat and sugar comparison should have been 20 (not 0). Yet, just to be sure I re-calculated several recipes with my own nutrition calculator, and they were all perfect - no errors - with accurate data and weight watcher points.
More important - this book not only has great food - Chai Tea, Pumpkin Muffins, a bunch of great Coleslaws, Spinach Salad (with hot bacon dressing), Sloppy Joes, ice creams and even Cheesecake for breakfast - every single recipe I have made has been easy and delicious. It is the first book I have found that does such a good job cutting the fat along with the sugar and carbs and that has good recipes for everyday use (and a bunch for the holidays). I am ordering another book, and her dessert book, as soon as I finish this review and recommend you do so too. You will not be disappointed.

The Complete Idiot's Guide Glycemic Index Cookbook Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide Glycemic Index Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance, so I jumped right on the Low Glycemic train. I love the Complete Idiot's Guide to 20-minute meals, so I thought this would be the best place to start. The first part of the book has lots of helpful information, and each recipe shows all the nutritional content. The downside is that a lot of the recipes include expensive ingredients or ingredients that I can't find anywhere, such as Hi-Maize and Xylitol and Soy Flour. My only resort would be ordering online. With the 20 min meals book, I could almost always flip it open and find something to make with what I already had in the house.
The fruit recipes are plentiful, but as someone who loves fruit, I can eat tons of it and don't need the bother of cooking it. But for those who find it hard to get in their daily servings, they would probably be great. I also found that many of the recipes involve a lot of meat and though there is a small vegetarian section, those recipes don't look stellar. I would say, if you're a vegetarian, a picky eater or on a budget, maybe just try looking up recipes online.

Dana Carpender's NEW Carb and Calorie Counter-Expanded, Revised, and Updated 4th Edition: Your Complete Guide to Total Carbs, Net Carbs, Calories, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
She is the reigning queen of low-carb cuisine and for good reason-Dana Carpender knows her stuff when it comes to easily making a carbohydrate-restricted eating plan a part of a normal, everyday way of life. While the media and health pundits choose to denigrate low-carbohydrate nutrition for whatever their reasons, people like Dana just keep living by example and sharing with the world the knowledge and experience she has attained as a decade-plus low-carb veteran. And more than anything else, she recognizes that people need help keeping track of their carbohydrate and calorie intake which is why she's released Dana Carpender's NEW Carb and Calorie Counter-Expanded, Revised, and Updated 4th Edition: Your Complete Guide to Total Carbs, Net Carbs, Calories, and More.
When a book has been through four updates and revisions, you know it's a useful tool for people and this book is no exception. In typical Dana Carpender style, whose line of low-carb cookbooks are heralded by any serious low-carb dieter, she starts off by telling you the basics of livin' la vida low-carb and how to make the most of her 350-page mass paperback book. Useful tips, health checklists, common health problems improved by low-carb nutrition, ways to enhance your low-carb lifestyle, and gentle encouragement dominate the first 30 pages.
It's a great refresher course for those of us who have been eating this way for a long time or an outstanding introduction to a whole new way to think about healthy eating for those who are new to carbohydrate-restriction. I especially liked her section "10 Great Snacks for 5 grams of Net Carbs Or Less!" to help all you road trippers know exactly what to bring with you to stick with your low-carb plan. She even does the same for national fast-food and popular sit down restaurants telling you EXACTLY what to order at places like Burger King, Hardee's, Denny's, KFC and even Pizza Hut! This is a nice book to keep in the glove compartment of your car for speedy reference while traveling.
The bulk of the book is in a table format with the name of the food or beverage, serving size, calories, total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, and fat listed for each. It begins with 16 pages of beverages, then 107 pages of common foods you would purchase for your family to eat, and finally nearly 200 pages of all the nutritional information about the foods you would order at a restaurant. I suppose it's a sign of our times that restaurants would receive nearly DOUBLE the amount of space in a book like this, but I'm all about arming people with information that will help them make better choices for the sake of their health. And Dana has done just that with this newly updated version of her carb and calorie counter book.

500 Heart-Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes: Comfort Food Favorites That Both Your Family and Doctor Will Love Review

500 Heart-Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes: Comfort Food Favorites That Both Your Family and Doctor Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Several months ago, I discovered slow cooking through my local library. I borrowed some books and purchased a 4 QT. Hamilton Beach slow cooker (which I really like!). Because I have cut way down on my salt intake, I am sensitive to excess sodium and try to avoid recipes that include processed food. So, I was very excited when the "500 Heart-Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes" book came out. I have tried several of the recipes (and am cooking one right now -- and it smells great!)...and I'd say that this book is very good but... I feel that one piece of information is missing...none of the recipes indicate what size cooker is recommended (for each recipe).
Since I am fairly new to slow cooking, I find it extremely helpful to know what size cooker I need to use (before I start putting ingredients in). In one recipe, I ran out of room and had to leave an ingredient out. In another recipe, I guessed right that it needed less than a 2 QT cooker, but it's really best not to have to make these guesses. Plus all the other slow cooker books that I have include this information.
To the author and publisher -- please include the recommended slow cooker size when you print the second edition. To anyone considering this book...if you're a good judge of cooker size, just by reading the recipe, you won't be disappointed in adding this book to your collection -- I still give it a thumbs up!

I bought this book because I was looking for recipes using Splenda, and were low in sugar, fat and calories as my husband is a newly diagnosed diabetic. I tried the Banana Muffins recipe first, fully expecting them to taste like "diet food." Wow! Was I ever surprised! I liked the muffins so much, I made them for friends and family who loved them so much they begged me to make more. My husband raved about the Banana Muffins to his doctor who promptly rushed out to buy the book for himself! The books gives analysis per serving info (the main reason I initially bought the book) and the recipes are incredibly easy to follow and taste yummy. We both have hope because of this book that we can eat a variety of healthy, tasty food. This cookbook is the only one I have in my kitchen now. God Bless Marlene Koch for this wonderful book!

I am completely baffled by this book and the reviews it has received! After only a few pages I was aghast and realized I had thrown my money away.
I am not a medical professional or scientist but all of my own personal research into diabetes and related blood disorders strongly recommend avoiding refined carbohydrates. This book is full of recipes using highly refined carbohydrates: white sugar and white flour.
I also found recipes containing an uncomfortably high percentage of calories from fat. I expected recipes emphasizing whole, low glycemic foods prepared in as close to their natural state as possible - foods that had as much of their beneficial properties (such as nutrients and fiber) intact. I was extremely disappointed by what this book had to offer and am sorry I bought it.

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More Review

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I suppose that this book is for people who are already into whole foods. To people who aren't accustomed to such foods might read ingredients like Lecithin granules, Asorbic Acid, Sprilla and go "What the heck is that?" But, I'm weird, and I already have all that stuff. :)
It's also for people who have a good blender (obviously) and preferably a juicer, though store bought juices are fine. You just get more health benefits from fresh juices. And I'm glad the Author does understand that not everyone has a juicer.
That being said though, I've always enjoyed making healthful and delicious juices and smoothies. But the few other books I have, mainly the juice books, the recipes are a bit too fancy for me. Not to mention expensive. Great for entertaining guests I suppose, but just for me? Nah. Smoothies, for the most part I've just made up on my own. But realizing how many calories I was consuming with them woke me up a bit. I LOVE that this book has not only very yummy smoothies, but nutritional info for each one! I also love that they are all designed for specific health needs. Losing weight, Working out, Pregnancy, Boosting Immunity, etc. It also has a section for kids. What a wonderful way to get more healthy foods in my son's belly without his knowing it because they taste so damn awesome!
I love this book. And even though, as a few have complained, there are no pictures (I always look for cook books with beautiful photos) - this is the only Smoothie Book I need.
A side note about the cost of smoothies and juicing - I think this book saves you money. It has you making ice cubes from strong teas or fresh juices to add into future smoothies. So in my freezer, I have it stocked with labeled freezer bags of Beet Juice, Watermelon Carrot Juice, Coconut Milk. Today I planned on making up some Chai Tea Ice Cubes for the Chai Smoothie later. Juicing yourself in small amounts and freezing them really cuts down on the cost of produce. You use less, and your produce doesn't spoil before you get a chance to use it all.
Even still, if I see an apple looking a little sad. I just juice it instead of throwing it away.
Apples are also a good cheap filler for juicing. Any produce on the expensive side, I juice with apples to use less of the more expensive produce. The taste isn't changed much, and it adds fiber and other nutrients.
