I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this book. And I was very excited to get it too. I discovered on my own that I needed to follow a very low starch diet to control my blood sugar. So I was hoping this book would support my dietary changes that keep me in perfect control.
Not the case. This doctor offers a low starch diet, but also is a BIG advocate of diabetes drugs and insulin. He throws in a chapter about exercise and then the sample diets are HORRIBLE for a diabetic. In one sample dinner he has you eating a cup of grapes. If I eat more than 5 grapes I get a BS spike. He has you drinking a lot of milk. MILK!! even whole milk puts my BS so high I have to go work out for an hour to get it back down.
He says "sugar" is not the culprit....it's starch. However, all of his "sweet" recipes have Splenda in them. He then goes on to say it is o.k. to have a small amount of sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth. With a disclaimer that if you find sugar addict, you better skip this allowance. Geez...sugar is one of the most addictive substances on earth. If I had a handful of jellybeans after dinner like he says I can...I'd be in a coma....and wanting more later after the fog head wore off.
Here is his advice:
Low starch diet
Metaformin (as soon as possible...just ignore the nasty side effects it can have)
Exercise
Insulin
That is the gist of the entire book. Poor poor.
The word "solution" indicates you have found an answer. Something that works. He attaches it to "low-starch" when in fact his diet would not work without the exercise and copious amounts of drugs he says you should take.
His sample diets would have me on insulin.
He talks about his recipes and says there is no alternative to gluten. That is utter BS. 10 minutes on Google will have you tons of recipes that switch out gluten for other ingredients to make muffins, etc. And some are low carb (use eggs to hold it together). I am Celiac so I know this to be true. I make gluten free goodies for holidays once in awhile that people cant tell the difference!!
What has worked for me is: very low starch diet, low sugar fruits (berries), lots of green leafy veggies, no corn, no dairy, no grains, no rice, no beans, no potatoes, real fats such as coconut, butter, olive oil, meats, eggs, nuts and seeds. That's it!! Exercise everyday for 45 minutes. S.I.M.P.L.E. And most importantly no drugs or insulin.
VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Nothing groundbreaking. Nothing new. And NOT A SOLUTION to anything!

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!
The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.
The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

I have read the first edition prior to this one and it was such an informative book that I bought myself the second edition. Researching nutrition for years, I must say this has to be my favorite out of all other nutrition books I've encountered. Of course each book has its own purpose and flavor, but if you want a good entry book into health and overall well-being (for yourself and/or your family) driven by nutrition, this is the one you need.
Through simple language and well-structured organization of the chapters, Duyff delivers a vast load of information mostly based on the Food Guide Pyramid, a guide used to quantitatively approximate the proportions of food consumed by categories. By no means is this a strict regimen of daily diet lists, however. The author covers the basics of food components to give a scientific/clinical basis for the nutrition guidelines suggested for good heath. You chose the specific foods yourself!
The author also covers food shopping and preparations. Topics range from reading nutrition labels to preparation safety. Not only do you want to make sure you know the quality of food you are getting (by its chemical components) you also want to make sure your kitchen habits minimize your exposure to harmful bacterial contamination and other health risks. One of my favorite features of the discussions are the myth-dispelling and "ambiguous label claims" clarifications. After reading this book you will look at "what people say" in a completely different light. Also, if you want to know what supplements work and do not work, you will find it here.
Special nutrition topics cover guidelines for people of different lifestyles. It includes ages from infants to the seniors. It even covers mothers and the special needs of women! Small sections discuss athletes, vegetarians, and allergies.
Overall, to sum it up, I would say that this book is about using nutrition as part of your lifestyle to optimal health through disease prevention and enhanced physical energy (though these two seem to be somewhat synergistic). It is not about quick methods to loose weight or cures for ailments. If you want to lead a nutritious lifestyle based on physiological health and well-being, and you have the patience and persistence to stick to common principles for a long time, this book is definitely worth reading as well as keeping as a shelf reference.

Easy to read, easy to follow and for the first time a diet EASY TO DO! South Beach wanted a week of eating turkey and V8 basically, you'll be craving carbs like crazy on Adkins OR you can eat like a regular person on the Belly Off! Diet. You get fat, protein and carbs EVERY MEAL. I'm never hungry, I eat all the time and it's never stuff I hate. Chili, chicken wings, sandwiches, steak, pizza....everything is great. I'm not even following this diet to the T and I'm already down 17 pounds in 3 weeks. The thing about it is if I really followed their workout plans (no gym required) more often I'd be down a lot more. It's very motivating. I'm using new belt loops on my pants, I feel so much better and again, I eat all the time. Pick this book up, read it, try it and you WILL lose weight. I bought Rocco's Now Eat This book last year. The recipes were so amazing that I started losing 3 pounds a week! The reason I could stay on this diet was because with Rocco's recipes, I felt like I was still eating my favorite foods - burgers, mac and cheese, fried chicken, brownies etc. I love that Rocco came out with Now Eat This Diet because it really helps me put together daily meal plans. No more guess work, I just simply combine what recipes I like best for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This book also has EVEN MORE recipes of my favorite comfort foods. There are a ton of photos in the book which come in handy when I am unsure whether I am making the dishes properly. The layout of the book is also good and very easy to follow. I'd say, overall, this book is even better than the last one.

This diet drink actually works if you use it right and dont eat anything else. I lost 4 pounds in one day..probably due to the fact that I didnt eat all day. Only drank this juice, which was suprisingly good tasting. Also it does not make you poop which I thought, but thats a good thing. So its not a cleanser. Only problem is that you will probably gain the weight back if you start eating normal.

Albeit skeptical, I bought a bottle of the Hollywood 48-hour Miracle Diet. First, I was amazed at how great it tasted. It has a tasty citrus flavor...something like orange and pineapple juice. Second, I was further amazed when I saw that I lost a total of 8.5 pounds! It worked! The only problem I experienced was that I felt very hungry, because there's nothing in the juice to curb your appetite. So, I ended up eating one small (sensible) meal a day both days (although I wasn't suppose to). Yet, I still managed to lose 8.5 pounds! I would definitely recommend this miracle diet to anyone. But beware, that you may end up feeling hungry for 48 hours.
