I am quite impressed with this book. The amount of information that Duke has crammed into this slim volume is unbelievable. The herb profiles contain everything you would want to know about an herb before using it. The safety rating is such a great tool. I wonder why Duke is the first herbalist to think of it (at least I think he's the first. Never seen it in any other herbal). In this collection of herbs, there are North, South and Central American plants as well as European and Asian ones. There's a nice therapeutic index too, listing what herbs are good for which conditions. Duke has a great writing style. It reflects his incredible knowledge, sense of humor and just plain common sense. Excellent book! If I could only have 3 herb books, this would be one of them.

Your Health Is Your Responsibility Review

Your Health Is Your Responsibility
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This densely packed book is so full of health information that it resembles an encyclopedia. The author says that she wrote the book to help others after she discovered that she had diabetes at the young age of 35. It's obvious that she took responsibility for her own health and learned everything she could, not only about her disease of diabetes, but about healthy eating and living in general.
The author discusses in depth the factors such as smoking and lack of exercise that adversely affect your health. She admits she had a tendency to develope diabetes because of her genetic makeup, but she doesn't let herself or her reader off the hook for taking responsibility of their health. The major area where the author calls upon the reader to take responsibility in in the area of food. She looks closely at the American diet and lifestyle choices, and makes recommendations to improve them. She also looks closely at the causes of several of the most common diseases in our world today such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis.
Available at Amazon Your Health is Your Responsibility is priced at $22.95, which is a bargain for this huge book.

Pillsbury Holiday Baking: Treats filled with cheer for a magical time of year Review

Pillsbury Holiday Baking: Treats filled with cheer for a magical time of year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cookbook covers October through December. You will get lots of recipes starting with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and then ending with New Year.
The recipes are many you've probably already been making for years. But here they're all in one cookbook and with nicely done pictures so you know what the creations are suppose to look like completed.
I would say most of the recipes are geared for children's parties or at least parties where you're bringing the "cute" dish. For Halloween there are bugs in a blanket which is similar to the pigs in a blanket dish but with added shoestring potatoes stuck in for legs and tiny drops of ketchup and mustard on the top for "spots."
Most of the recipes are for desserts, cakes, puddings, pinwheels, sweet appetizers using crescent rolls. There are a few true appetizers but not many and very few entrees.
There is a recipe for savory crab cheesecake that is worth the price of the cookbook alone. It's a very impressive dish that is also delicious. It's served with cocktail sauce and assorted crackers. It would be very appropriate to take the office Christmas party. But again, as an appetizer.
Some of the Hannukkah recipes would be acceptable for any celebration. There a chocolate ganache meringue that is made from scratch that could be served for dessert at any dinner. The praline cream puffs are to die for. And cream puffs are very easy to make actually. Really no need for the store bought variety. I've used the recipe from Betty Crocker "Buffets" cookbook for years and they're delicious and so simple to make. If you can still get that cookbook then do so.
Under the Hannukkah section there is a mini reuben sandwich or a mini rachel sandwich made with refrigerated crescent dinner rolls. Again, could be served at any event.
The Kwanzaa section included aloha tea cakes, praline sugar cookies, red velvet cake, tiny ham and pineapple pot pies and cheddar and bacon biscuits. I'm not sure what food qualifies to be served at a Kwanzaa celebration but many of these recipes could be served any time of the year.
Perhaps that is what the other reviewer was referring to when she said that these are just the same old recipes. For New Years the banana-eggnog bread pudding with rum sauce was delish. We've served it for years.
Again, these are tried and true tested recipes using the Pillsbury product name. So that's what you're getting. These recipes could be served at any event except for the Halloween specialities.
Hope that helps in determining whether to purchase or not. If you have the Pillsbury Big Book of Baking then you'd have all these recipes already. But this would be a good Christmas gift for a new bride who is starting to "theme" bake who you don't want to overwhelm with a huge cookbook. Include some baking sheets, bread pan, and maybe even a Pampered Chef bar pan. There are lots of pictures of the finished product and includes calorie and nutrition information. Also includes high altitude directions.
If you want a book for all the themed holidays then get the "Pillsbury Cmon Over!" cookbook. It includes menus for Garden Cookout, Oktoberfest, Kids Halloween, After the Autumn Harvest Feast, Holiday Brunch, Winter Fiesta, The Big Game, Valentine's Day dinner, Welcome Spring party, Flower Power Shower, Mother's day, plus 20+ other parties. And it includes drinks, appetizers, entrees and dessert suggestions. I think it would be a better gift than just the "Holiday Baking" cookbook.
Both are very good cookbooks and I didn't see much overlap in the recipes.

The Arbor House Casserole was the best breakfest I have ever made. I made it in a muffin pan so that I could serve it individually rather then in slices. My guests loved the taste. Will try other recipes and let you know.

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide) Review

diffordsguide to Cocktails 7 (Diffords Guide)
Average Reviews:

Over 400 pages of tips, techniques, a massive section on drinks (with pictures), spirits reviews and a guide to the worlds best cocktail bars. Heavy enough to qualify as a weapon in most jurisdictions, it is solidly bound, well laid out, and printed in a large format. So unlike most drinks books, it is easy to read, nicely indexed in various ways, and can be used as a reference for years to come without falling apart.
As a repository of all cocktail knowledge and wisdom it easily surpasses the Mr. Boston Bartenders Guide (long considered an industry standard manual and now in its 66th edition), in quality, depth, breadth and sheer numbers of cocktails. If you are going to buy any cocktail book, this is the one to have.

Bon Appetit: Keep It Simple: Easy Techniques for Great Home Cooking Review

Bon Appetit: Keep It Simple: Easy Techniques for Great Home Cooking

(More customer reviews)
Over the Christmas holiday at my parents' house, I came across Bon Appetit's "Keep It Simple" cookbook. Being an avid fan of cooking and the magazine Bon Appetit, I perused the book and devoured practically every picture I saw in the book. I immediately knew I had to get a copy of my own. Unfortunately when I got back home, I wasn't able to find a copy in any of the major bookstores so I bought it here on Amazon.com. Within a couple of weeks, I have already made three of the dishes I found in this book. I particularly loved the recipe for sweet and sticky barbecue sauce. Instead of using beef ribs, I used babyback ribs which are my favorite. The sauce turned out to be great. I loved the combination of sweet and savory flavors. And last weekend, I made the oven-fried chicken. Oh! That was the best oven-fried chicken I have ever tasted. I definitely am looking forward to making more of some of the recipes I see in "Keep It Simple". What I really love about this cookbook is the easy instructions as well as the pictures showing each step for certain recipes. I think this book is excellent for novice chefs like myself. It is straight-forward and unpretentious. Well worth the money and wait for this culinary addict.

The Food and Mood Cookbook: Recipes for Eating Well and Feeling Your Best
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cookbook is one of the best I've come by for people who have average to above average cooking experience and who are looking for very tasty, healthy meals. Everything I've made from this book has come out excellent and the ingredients are common to most cooks' kitchens, so you don't have to search extensively for exotic spices, etc. With some slight modifications, I have been able to improve a number of these recipes based on my individual tastes. I'm particularly fond of the soups and find that they are extremely quick and easy to make.
Enjoy and eat well!
