Going raw "Diana style" is a treat your body will never forget. I went raw immediately - the very next meal - after meeting Diana in 2008. I could not have imagined how good Diana's raw recipes, combined with her practically trademark brand of inspiration, could make me feel. I went from 180 to 160 pounds in just a few months, felt amazing, slept better and had more energy than ever before. I know it's hard to believe, but true! Many around me that witnessed the transformation wanted to get started, but felt immediate stress wondering what they would eat, how they could do it, etc. Diana's new book makes it easy. It's not just the delicious and easy-to-make recipes, but a great approach to getting the most from a raw diet and lifestyle. Diana's inspiration can be felt in every aspect, word and page of the book. - you'll be surprised at what a difference that can make. Get it!
Love, Love, Love

this is a pretty tasty book of smoothies. the chapters talk about how nutrients keep you healthy, organic food, smoothie basics and recipes. the recipes are simple, delish and include every kind of fruit and vegetable imaginable. whey protein powder is used in many of the recipes. my only complaint is these smoothies are high in calories. majority of the recipes range from 175 to over 500 calories for one glass. of course these are so good, you'll want a couple glass fulls. if calories are not that important, these refreshing recipes will do the trick.

The Raw Gourmet Review

Whether you're just looking to add more fruits and vegetables into your food program, are transitioning into becoming vegetarian or going more into raw foods, this is THE book for you.
It's got great photos, sections on; the basics including a guide to using the book and ten raw food kitchen essentials so you can prepare a meal within 20 minutes of arriving home; breakfast; juices and blended drinks; fundamental flavors including soups, sauces, dressings, etc.; entrees and desserts. There is a section on sprouting, food combining, a 3-week menu plan; special occasion menu suggestions, sources and grocery guide.
In the grocery guide, Nomi explains foods which some people may not be familiar with and what they may be used for. Most of the ingredients are common and familiar to most people or, if not, can be substituted for those that are.
In the sources section, she tells where to get many of the ingredients included in the recipes. Living in California, I've found I can get most of the ingredients at my local "natural" (many of the foods I wouldn't classify as natural) foods store, but for someone living far from these sources, it's nice to know where to go. I and my friends have purchased from a couple of these places and found the service and quality of foods to be excellent.
I would suggest that if you don't have one, the minimum to get to assist in making many of these recipes is a good food processor and a good blender. You can always upgrade as you become more creative. Nomi also lists sources for dehydrators, juicers and blenders. I purchased the ones she recommends before I knew about this book and I agree with her assessments.
Nomi was introduced to raw foods over 10 years ago by a holistic physician. At first she was eating about 50% of her foods raw and eventually became sincere about eat raw foods. She "said good-bye" to fibromyalgia, hypoglycemia, mood swings, allergic sinusitis, digestive disorders, including acid reflux and candida. You can see why she is a raw foods advocate.
If you're looking for a good, all-purpose book, I highly recommend The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon

I've had this book for about 2-3 weeks now and I've made a handful of good smoothies from this book and the rest of the recipes sound great...but I'd need to own a smoothie shop to be able to make half of these recipes. All of the recipes use different ingredients and the ones I want to try the most include several powders so I'd have to go out and buy dozens of different powders and juices for this book to be useful to me.
I was hoping this book wouldn't have a lot of fancy ingredients.

Conscious Eating Review

Conscious Eating
Average Reviews:

This book is one of the best health books I've ever read, no question about it. It combines pretty much every diet fad you've ever heard about into a raw, living food diet.
In this book, Cousens teaches us how to follow the Ayurvedic principles through a 80-90% raw food diet. He also teaches us how to individualize our diets for our metabolic body types. This is one of the only books I know that teaches how to individualize diet for a vegetarian.
The book covers religion, meditation, toxins in our environment, and has a nice living foods recipe section in the back of the book. The nice thing about it, is that with the recipes, he doesn't try to offer dishes that are similiar to those which are cooked. I see a lot of vegetarian recipe books doing that. "Try our delicious all vegan pizza!" and of course, it tastes no better than a branch off of the Maple tree in my back yard. These recipes offer new tastes.
I like a particular section in the book where Cousens tries to explain the logic behind why people think he looks much more unhealthy now than when he did when he was a bulky college football player. We live in such an obesce society, that someone of a healthy weight appears too slim, or unhealthy. Because Cousens doesn't have a pot belly, and sagging male breasts, many people say he looks "thin and puny". This book teaches us that through living foods, we can sculpt and shape our bodies pretty much any way we'd like. He chooses not to be muscular anymore, because he feels he has no need for 30 extra pounds of muscle. Steven Arlin on the other hand, is 230 lbs, and likes to feel big and strong.
All in all, this book takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of raw, living foods. It could change your way of thinking.

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets Review

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is so much more than a simple raw food cookbook or commentary on raw food diets. I was surprised at the amount of information packed into this book. It has all sorts of nutritional information and easy to read tables on just about anything you can imagine relating to this way of eating. Here are just a few titles of the tables included: Research summary of the effects of cooking on phytochemicals, Calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate and water in raw food (6 pages long), Fatty acid composition of selected foods, Vitamins in raw foods, Minerals in raw foods, Vitamins A,C,E,K, and D: adult dietary reference intakes and intakes on raw and high-raw diets. And those are just a few. I like tables because I can get information at a glance and compare different values so this is really a good book for me.
You don't have to be a total raw food convert to enjoy this book. Even if you're just thinking about adding more healthful raw foods to your diet, I think you'll find this book as useful as I have. It starts out with a history of the raw food movement, gives lots of scientific evidence on why it can be a healthy way of eating, and then goes on to give all kinds of information, things you've probably never even thought about, on incorporating raw foods into your diet or going totally raw. It tells you what you need to know if you do decide to take the plunge, about getting all the nutrients you need.
There is a small section with raw food recipes and another section with full meal menus which I found especially helpful. I'm not looking (yet) to totally adopt this kind of diet but I would like to add a lot more raw food to our everyday meals. The recipes are pretty easy and there are a good variety. A few that I've tried and enjoyed are: Caesar's Better Salad, Warm Red Cabbage Salad, Morocc-Un-Butter and Marvelous Muesli. There's also a section on handling raw food safely and another on food enzymes. It's all easy to read and understand.
There's a large reference section, a glossary and an index. To me, this is important because I want to know the science or studies behind statements, not just take the author at his word. This is a high quality book, probably the best I've found on this subject.

This book contains a wealth of information on the raw food lifestyle. Nutrition experts Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina once again provide the essential information needed to safely embrace a new dietary lifestyle. As they did for vegetarians and vegans in Becoming Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan, they present the first authoritative look at the science behind raw foods. And both old converts to raw foods and new recruits alike will be fascinated with food historian Rynn Berry's presentation of the first narrative history of the rawfoods movement in the United States. More people are jumping onto the raw foods bandwagon either to lose weight, fight chronic health problems, or simply to benefit from the high level of nutrients found in uncooked or sprouted foods. Readers will find science-based answers to tough questions about raw foods and raw diets, easy-to-follow nutritional guidelines, and practical information on how to construct a raw diet that meets recommended nutrient intakes simply and easily. A section of over forty-five recipes provides dishes for any time of day and every occasion. Nutritional analyses are given for each recipe. Also included is a section on what foods and equipment are needed to get started and what raw food preparation basics are good to master. This book is a major contribution to the raw foods movement.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.
Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything (Cooking)) Review

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything (Cooking))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been dabbling here and there with a rawfood lifestyle and I bought a stack of books to get me started. By far this book is the easiest to follow, most colorful, and they have great recipes that have turned out exactly as explained. I made a great recipe out of this book which I took to two potlucks (raw and a normal meat eater) and a lot of people raved about it. From appetizers to salads, burgers, breads, meals, and desserts this is a great source. Also, one final yet critical thing I like that the authors do is tell you exactly how long and the necessary temperature to have things in the dehydrator which is a common mistake I have discovered many people make in books and on youtube - they leave it out. All in all, this book is an absolute MUST HAVE for a new raw foodie or a seasoned raw foodist. Enjoy.

Raw Food/Real World: 100 Recipes to Get the Glow Review

Raw Food/Real World: 100 Recipes to Get the Glow
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I based my purchase of this book on the reviews listed here; however, I fear they may not be a good representation of this culinary book.
I agree that the book is full of beautifully photographed and mouth-watering delights and include detailed recipes to exotic looking meals.
My perception from a raw foodist point of view is that whist these raw food recipes require no cooking, please expect a lot of preparation time, particularly days in advance. Many dishes require a dehydrator, which apart from being an expensive piece of equipment, does require dehydrating for 6-12 hours.
There are also uses of heated foods (such as maple syrup) but the authors suggest strict raw foodists to try other ingredients. I also have a concern with the use of a lot of salt (the authors say they love the coarse nature of it in their recipes) and nut butters, which both ultimately are not a good thing to have in large proportions, whether it be via cooked or raw means. There is also mention of a lot of specific types of vegetables and greens, which is not easy to get a hold of by the general public.
The book is certainly written by talented artists of food, but from my point of view, a lot of the recipes (but not all)are beyond the typical householder.
If you are wanting to spend some creative time in the kitchen, finding exotic ingredients, then this exploration will lead you into culinary passion. But if you're looking for raw food dishes to whip up after work, you will have limited choices. I hope this gives the book a more rounded overview for those intending to purchase.

Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine Review

I normally don't write reviews at all, but this book certainly deserves one. The highlights:
* It doesn't consists of all these sweet recipes but has great tasting alternatives (I could never get into all that sweet stuff); there are no dates, bananas, etc., and there are some good explanations as to why
* The recipes don't require a lot of strange ingredients of which I never even heard before; ingredients are easily found
* You don't have to plan days ahead of time to just produce one dish; a lot of it can be put together quickly
* It does have its share of nuts, but for some reason I don't resent that here as I did in most of my other books; they don't seem to be everywhere
* There are NO wheat recipes (yeah!); I'm terribly allergic to that... Instead there are lots of recipes with flax seeds, and there is a very good explanation as to why wheat/grains are not used.
I ordered two other books at the same time I got this one and I already owned two raw food books, but this one is the only one I use. The recipes appeal to me much more than the ones in the other books. There still are tools that are necessary for the raw food kitchen, like a dehydrator, juicer, high-speed blender, etc., but there is a section in the beginning that outlines which ones they recommend.

Since I already have Mary Bell's "Complete Dehydrator Cookbook", which showed so much more than I'd ever known before, the title of this book really got my attention. And the recipes!!! YUMMY!!!! I packed several items when I had to make a trip to my specialist (3 hours each way) and I saved money, ate delicious, nutritious foods and didn't have to do the "fast food" stops like before. Will be doing more before I take a flight to see my family soon so I don't have to deal with the expense and questionable nutritional value of airline food.
Also, I have a very small apartment and drying makes more sense than canning. For instance, 10 pounds of blueberries dried fill 2 quart jars and 15 pounds of Bing cherries fill 2 and one half quarts, plus there is so little risk of spoilage. It's so much fun and the dried foods can be used in so many fantastic ways. Try the Strawberry Meringue cookies!!!
This book is a fun, educational read and the pictures just makes one's mouth water.
