Ayurvedic Cooking for Self Healing Review

Ayurvedic Cooking for Self Healing

This Ayurvedic cookbook is well suited for the beginner as well as an experienced cook. There is an introduction to Ayurveda and dosha specific eating presented in the beginning of the book. This will help you receive full benefit of the receipies and suggestions given. However if you do not care about Ayurveda the book still provides you with some of the most interesting and tasy Indian receipies (of course all vegetarian) I have had. Mrs. Lad's easy to follow instructions and down to earth approach to Indian cooking makes for an easy and succesful outcome of the cooking adventure. Great book, definitely a must in any Indian-food lover's collection.

The beautiful cover of this cookbook caught my eye but the personal story of Earthbound Farms beginnings and the fantastic recipes have held me captive and peaked my enthusiasm for organics and healthy cooking. Since buying this delightful cookbook I feel a bit obsessed with trying recipe after recipe. I was especially happy to see the meat recipes as I have wanted to incorporate more organic meat dishes into my family's diet, especially with 2 teenagers, but felt I lacked experience in buying and preparing meat. What a hit they have been with my family and unexpected surprise in this cookbook. The Sizzling Steak with Olive Sauce had everyone applauding mom's new found culinary skills and the Merlot Braised Shortribs elevated my status to "chef Mom".
In addition to expanding my repertoire of meals this cookbook has given me healthier versions of some family favorites. The Maple Walnut Muffins thrilled me with the small amount of sugar and no butter! Using a 1/4 cup of heart healthy canola oil instead of the 2 sticks of butter I was using in The Barefoot Contessa's Banana Crunch Muffins showed me how easy to eliminate fat and not sacrifice taste. My kids adored them as well as all 30 of the recipes I have tried to date.
This is a cookbook I highly recommend and bought for many family and friends. Its interesting tips and facts as well as beautiful, inspiring photos have made cooking 24/7 for my family a delight and pleasure.

The Fast Track Detox Diet: Boost metabolism, get rid of fattening toxins, jump-start weight loss and keep the pounds off for good Review

The Fast Track Detox Diet: Boost metabolism, get rid of fattening toxins, jump-start weight loss and keep the pounds off for good
Average Reviews:

I had about 20 pounds to lose, and tried other methods but couldn't seem to budge them. The key thing about any diet or eating program is that everyone's chemical makeup and metabolism responds differently, and so they don't work for everyone.
The people who would benefit the most from this book and this program are those with a combination of certain symtoms and habits, plus a willingness to spend time, energy and money on shifting how they eat.
This is a good book for you if (like me) you suffer from a collection of symptoms:
- overweight
- bloating
- fatigue
- bad skin/rashes
- gastric issues
- problems sleeping
- cholesterol problems (among other things)
While at the same time you have erratic eating habits, such as:
- lots of restaurant meals & takeout
- non-organic food
- fast-food or processed prepared meals
- a passion for sugar, alcohol or caffeine
- overeating/portion control problems
- too much starch, not enough vegetables in your diet
And:
- you decide you can live without coffee
- you're not dependent on drugs or alcohol
- you have accessibility to a steady supply of organic fruits, vegetables and meat into your diet (read: a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's near you)
- the pocketbook to afford more expensive food, plus supplements
This book would probably benefit these types of people the most, as it changes your focus toward food, and makes you understand why certain foods and habits are bad for you. The focus on the liver/colon is especially helpful if you've never given these two organs much thought. For me, it was a major eye opener. Her arguments for organic foods (especially meat) are especially persuasive.
All that said, this is not a one-day detox, and I agree that the title is misleading. I lost six pounds in 11 days on this program, despite a sluggish thyroid. Since then, I've lost an additional two pounds in about a week. I don't stick to it daily but I've incorporated some lessons and I'm continuing to lose. I now find it almost impossible not to eat organic, and I realized that I had a sensitivity to gluten that I was not aware of which surely affected my weight.
One thing you have to keep in mind when selecting an eating program is choosing one that has foods that you like. To be successful on this program, you must like or be willing to eat some dark leafy vegetables (kale, mustard greens, chard, etc.), plus your choice of asparagus, artichokes, broccoli, brussel sprouts and the like. And eggs, you've got to eat some eggs on this plan. But otherwise, you can eat a lot of your normal foods - the key is on elmininating wheat, sugar, alcohol and caffeine. (I cheated, and drank a cup of decaf organic coffee each morning so I didn't lose the "ritual" and it had a sort of placebo effect.) Someone posted that you can't use olive oil, which is erroneous; it's encouraged as part of "healthy oils" intake.
You must also like cranberry juice, which is required for the fast to help stave off hunger. The requirement for unsweetened cranberry use probably makes this impractical for most people living outside the U.S.Canada, as it's difficult or not impossible to get in Europe, Asia and Australia.
Many people complain about the cost of her supplements. But if you take her book into a local health food store, they can hook you up with an equivalent of whatever she's offering. I bit the bullet and ordered Colonix (you can find through a search engine) instead and while spendy, it's been incredibly effective as part of this program. One secret to the 11 day diet for me was vegetable soup. I made a couple of batches of different soups on the weekend (such as cabbage soup, broccoli/cauliflower, kale/white bean) and ate those each day for lunch to get several of the required vegetables. I also learned that I really like mustard greens and chard - I'd just never realized it. Just visit a recipe site like [...] for the recipes and plug in the ingredients.
She has recipes in the back of the book, but I didn't try them save for the flax "pancake" that I made after the fast. It was fine, mostly apple-y, but I hadn't eaten in a day so anything tasted good!

Just Barley Og Powder 80Serv By Pure Planet Review

Just Barley Og Powder 80Serv By Pure Planet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just finished writing this review. It is a rather long one. Perhaps my longest yet!
So, if you don't have the time or desire to read a lot of info about barley grass products, here is....
>
This is the best barley grass powder I know of. If you want to buy barley grass JUICE powder, this is the one. In my experience it is better than Green Magma and the AIM International products in both nutritional quality and PRICE. Much cheaper.
Avoid buying all the grass products that don't have the word JUICE on them. Barley Grass Powder is a cheap and poor substitute for Barley Grass Juice Powder. It's like comparing olives to extra virgin olive oil -- when what you want is a nice oil.
Buy this one, try it, and enjoy. PRICE NOTE: This particular item on Amazon may not be the best price, and currently does not have Amazon Prime. Shop around on Amazon, and elsewhere if you want the best price.
Read on if you want a deeper understanding of why I say all of the above...>
For those not overly familiar with grass juices, etc., I'll share a few important points. I encourage you to take the time to read this, as I am sure you'll find it very helpful in navigating your way through the potential confusion of different barley grass products.
>> POWERED JUICE COMPARED TO POWDERED GRASS
As far as I know the first Barley Grass JUICE Power that became commonly avaialable was developed and manufactured in Japan by Dr. Hagiwara back in the 60s (from memory). Since then is has been sold under various labels/brands. I understand the process that was developed in Japan is now used elsewhere, such as in the USA.
The main product that is still associated with Dr. Hagiwara is produced by Green Foods: Green Magma - Barley Grass Juice Powder 11 oz.
Here is the ingredients of Green Magma:
Powdered juice from organically-grown young barley grass, maltodextrin (a complex carbohydrate), organic brown rice.
Here is the sugar / carbohydrate content:
Serving Size (2 Teaspoons/6g):
Total Calories 20 cal
Total Carbohydrate 4 g
Protein 1 g
As you can see, it is 67% sugar (a complex sugar, but sugar none-the-less), which is almost entirely coming from the maltodextrin (a complex sugar) they add into it. The rise is also ultimately no better than a filler ingredient.
Another long standing brand (since 1982) is AIM International. As far as I can tell they licensed or copied the manufacturing process developed in Japan.
AIM has recently changed their formula, which has increased the nutritional content. This suggests to me they have increased the amount of actual grass juice and decreased the amount of maltodextrin (essentially a nutritionally useless filler that is introduced as part of the low temperature spray drying process they use, as developed in Japan). Both AIM and Green Foods use a drying process that involves the introduction of maltodextrin (a sugar). AIM adds in some kelp, which is nice, but there are much more affordable ways to get kelp powder if that is what you want.
AIM BarleyLife® Nutritional Profile (reduced to show just carbohydrate)
Per 100g Per 5g
Calories339Kcal16.95Kcal
Total Carbohydrates54.15%2.7075g*(3.25g per 6g)
Total Dietary Fiber4.1%0.205g
Total Sugar15.9%0.795g
As far as I recall, the AIM product use to have a higher sugar/carbohydrate content (similar to Magma). As mentioned, I think they reduced the amount of maltodextrin and increased the juice content.
Both AIM and Green Foods make a true barley grass JUICE powder product, but both have maltodextrin which at the end of the day is an inexpensive filler. In my opinion, the same goes for the rice in the Green Magma product, and the kelp in the AIM product.
Another competing product is from PINES: Pines International - Wheat Grass Juice Powder, 6 oz powder
I have not tried it. I notice they add arrowroot to it. No idea how much.
>
The maltodextrin in the AIM products comes from cornstarch (according to their product literature). I would guess the same is true for the Green Magma product. Neither state that this particular ingredient is certified organic. As most of the cornstarch produced in the USA is from genetically modified (GMO) industrial corn, I would not personally use the AIM product until I had it confirmed they are using a non-GMO cornstarch for their maltodextrin. I'd also want to know from Green Foods about their GMO status before using Green Magma. But, with Just Barley available, this all becomes a moot point.
>
Before I found the Just Barley product I use to go without barley juice when travelling (which is much of the past 15 years). When I am in one place long enough I grow (LOTS) of barley grass and make fresh juice each day. But when on the move, I've had to go without and it's the one "food" item I really miss since I started travelling and lecturing so extensively. I tried Green Magma (numerous times) and the AIM product. But both failed to give me the lift I feel when I drink fresh juice. Both felt like they lacked something, and both were very sweet (due to the maltodextrin). About the best I have been able to do is drink fresh shots of juice whenever I find a juice-bar that sells barley/wheat grass juice.
In my experience, Just Barley is the real deal. 100% pure, GMO free, gluten free, organic barley grass JUICE powder. No fillers. No cheap rice. No cheap kelp. No cheap and potentially GMO maltodextrin.
I now have a new travel companion. For the past two years I nearly always have this product on hand.
It is a very light powder. 1 teaspoon weighs in at around 1g. Whereas 1 tsp of the other products mentioned come to 2.5 to 3g. That extra weight is from the other ingredients (maltodextrin, etc.).
>
My only warning is to be very careful when eating this powder straight from a spoon. If you happen to breath in or out you are likely to either blow fine green dust over yourself, or inhale fine green dust into your lungs which will most likely result in coughing and that will then blast the dust everywhere!!
So eat it from the spoon with caution. Otherwise mix it into water (or juice, if you find the taste a bit too much to handle).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask through the comments.
I wish you all the best of health,

P.P.S. If you find you really like grass juice, I highly recommend you look into growing it yourself. It's relatively easy, and the fresh juice is a lot better than ANY of the powered products. Just Barley is the closest I can get to the fresh juice, but you can't beat the fresh stuff. It's also MUCH cheaper to grow it yourself.

Hard to find in stores and online. Price seems a bit high on amazon now. I'll order it if/when they lower it to less than what it costs full retail per each can.

For all you "label freaks" like myself-Guru Lite is the best "energy drink" on the market (I just wish it was twice the size). The fact that it contains Stevia-over nasty sweeteners such as Aspartame or Splenda is a Huge plus (not counting all the other garbage thrown in those other drinks.) The taste is definitely an aquired one. But for a guy who was downing 3 Sugar free Monsters per day (and my liver enzyme count showed it)...Guru lite has been the perfect replacement...(and my enzymes are back down to normal!!) Let that be a warning to those of you energy drink junkies slamming down 2-3 drinks per day.
Overall-Guru Lite is a great product-and while I love the taste of regular Guru, I'll take the 10 calories and no sugar versus 100 calories and 25 grams with the regular.

First Juice Organic Apple + Carrot, 8 Ounce Sippy Top Bottle (Pack of 12)
Average Reviews:

This is a great product, however, I do not understand why this juice had DOUBLED in price over the last few months. It is also no longer eligible for Prime shipping, adding even more to the price tag. Nearly $60 for 12 small bottles of juice is absurd! Especially when I first began buying them for a mere $23 with free shipping.
Also, as much as I love that the bottle is spill proof as many reviewers say, it is not "leak proof". If you shake the bottle for a minute (such as to work in probiotic powder) juice will get all over your hands. Not a huge deal as you can just wipe it off and go, but it does continue to drip out a few more drops while being consumed.
*stars are for the lack of availability and price gauging, not the actual quality of the product!
