Before Your Pregnancy: A 90-Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception Review

Before Your Pregnancy: A 90-Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception
Average Reviews:

I really wanted to like this book. I wasn't even expecting it to have lots of information that I didn't already know, having done a ton of research myself in my role as fertility counselor, but thought that it would be slightly helpful at least. It was not. It was instead incomplete and incorrect.
Conclusions made are inconsistent - thing A is to be treated with caution because its safety for pregnant women is unproven, whereas thing B is considered safe because it has never been shown to cause problems. Where is the logic here? There is no difference between "never been shown to cause problems" and "safety unproven". And if there is a difference in the proven safety of these two things, it should be stated explicitly rather than left at these two vague comments.
Some statements are just plain incorrect. For example, it is stated that ovulation is the day of the basal body temperature rise, when in fact the temperature rise usually occurs the day following ovulation. Also, intercourse on this day is stated to give the best chance of conception. This is incorrect whichever way you look at it - intercourse on the day of the temperature rise is usually too late (being the day after ovulation, the egg is often dead by then), and intercourse on the day of ovulation is still not the best timing (for those who are interested, intercourse the day before ovulation is best, although difficult to time). I have to wonder what other "facts" in this book are downright wrong.
Finally, conclusions are drawn without sharing the information used to make them. It is claimed that a woman who has no immunity to rubella must get vaccinated, stating that the potential risks of the vaccine far outweigh the benefits. Nowhere is it mentioned that an adult woman receiving the rubella vaccine has much higher risk of serious medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and thrombocytopenia, and that according to the CDC the incidence of rubella in the US is extremely low. Whether or not the benefits of this vaccine outweigh the risks is something for women to decide for themselves, with all pertinent information.
Now, I would expect a book written by two doctors to side more often with medical gospel than not, but I was very surprised by the lack of portrayal of the other side of the issues. Or more to the point, that some things were treated as complete non-issues: women are encouraged to run right out and get the flu and chicken pox shots, with no mention of their risks or efficacy.
I should say that I did find the information on weight, diet, and exercise to be very thorough and mostly consistent with other reading I have done. Still, I simply cannot recommend this book.

Feeding Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childhood, and Beyond Review

Feeding Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childhood, and Beyond
Average Reviews:

This book has everything! If you're like me and a picky eater, you've probably wondered how to get your kids to eat things you don't eat. I was fed a very limited variety of foods as a child, and as a result I've always been very picky. This book explains why me and countless other Americans prefer the taste of packaged, processed foods loaded with salt and sugar, over fresh, wholesome, good food. So what did people do before the bland, jarred baby food of the industrial revolution hit store shelves? Read this book to find out!
What is included:
The definition of "baby" food
How to eat while pregnant to maximize the chances of your baby being an adventurous eater later on
How to introduce foods in a way your baby will find intriguing
Recipes
How we inadvertently teach our toddlers to become picky eaters
Facts about what's actually in baby food
How jarred baby food came to be in the first place
How to approach eating as "fun" and create enjoyable food experiences
You not only become educated on what to feed your baby, you become educated on the entire process of how consumers came to depend on Gerber and other baby food companies as the only way to feed a baby. I was always told that it wasn't safe to introduce too many varieties of fruits and veggies to a baby at once, but this book dispels that myth and so many others.
Skip What To Eat While You're Expecting and just read this.

Margarita Mama Review

Margarita Mama
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"I'll never forget that wonderful moment when the concept of the Margarita Mama was born. I was newly pregnant. (Translation: No alcohol allowed!) It was a hot summer day. I was visiting my in-laws at their beach house, and all my summer-trained insticts called out for a real margarita. Everyone else was indulging in a chilly, sprightly, refreshing cocktail. Sure, none of *them* were pregnant--but what about meeeeee?" -- From the book
Although this delightful book has expectant Moms (or newbie Moms) in mind, rest assured that Margarita Mama is a GREAT book for ANYONE who enjoys refreshing drinks. In this case, non-alcoholic ones!
This colorful 95-page hardcover book features insight, advice and tons of delicious recipes (I know because I tried some!). Here are but a few of the tasty "mocktails" included in this fun book:
*Mudlide
*Watermelon Margarita
*Pregnant Peach
*Strawberry Banana Smoothie
*Perfect Pear of Jeans
*Basil Pomegranate Lemonade
*Momsicle
*Sparkling Cosmopolitan
*Mimosa
*Chocolate Crave
*Raspberry Champagne
*Mai Tai
*Sangria
*Materni-tea
*Swollen Feet Fizz
*White Russian
Do those sound scrumptious or WHAT?!
My personal favorite? A drink I've made for years and still love: the Sparkling Cape Codder.
If you're looking for a nice gift book for a Mom-to-be (especially if she lives in a warm climate or somewhere where the summers are HOT), Margarita Mama would make a lovely surprise!
And, like I said, this book does NOT have to be gifted to--or enjoyed by--mommies or mommies-to-be! Anyone who loves delicious, easy-to-make virgin drinks will no doubt find Magarita Mama a welcome addition to their recipe repertoire. (Yikes! Say those last two words real fast! *chuckle*)
Enjoy!

What to Expect: Eating Well When You're Expecting Review

What to Expect: Eating Well When You're Expecting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow -- what a great book!!! I'm newly pregnant and I really want to make sure I'm eating good food for my baby, especailly since I'm so nauseous all the time. I saw this book in the bookstore and bought it... and am I glad I did. It's packed with info about nutrition during pregnancy. It's funny and it's a really easy to read book -- plus it doesn't make you feel bad if you miss a few days of eating healthy or if you eat some unhealthy food every once in a while.

The first chapter tells you why it's important to eat nutritious food. The second chapter is so great because it goes through all the pregnancy symptoms and gives advice on exactly what to do for them in terms of food. Too nauseaous to eat (my problem) -- here are some tips. What to do about the food cravings (especially when you're craving something totally unhealthy). But the best thing is that it doesn't make you feel guilty if you do crave ice cream or cake or whatever. It recognizes that sometimes the only thing I can eat is potato chips, and it doesn't make me feel like I'm hurting my baby! But it still gives you the ideal of what you should eat (there's a really funny section later on called "ideal...get real" that totally gets this point across. Plus it makes you realize you probably are eating healthy for the most aprt anyway). I love that.

The next chapter goes through weight gain and the pregnancy diet telling you what you should be eating each day. The best thing is that the book has tons of lists of different foods -- and the serving amounts -- so figuring out how much to eat is no big deal. Then there's a great chapter on being an expectant gourmet. It goes through all the different types of food that you can eat while you're pregnant. I learned so much from that chapter. Who knew there were so many different types of lettuces!

There's also stuff on what foods to avoid when you're pregnant, and how to keep your food safe. Also sections on eating while you're working with great tips on eating when you're sick, when you're traveling, and what you can eat when you're in a restuarant.

Then the best part is the recipes -- it's half the book! Totally yummy. I already made the ginger and carrot muffins (they say ginger is good for morning sickness) and the Chicken Burgers with Mango relish. The recipes are all healthy -- but so good and they totally don't taste like health food stuff-- even my husband (mr. very picky eater) thought the muffins were great. And what's great is that I was able to eat them too even with my nausea! There are so many good looking recipes, I don't know which ones to try first (I think I'm going to try the Pork Medallions with arugula and Tomatoes next).

Totally get this book if you're pregnant and want to eat healthy and eat good food. I highly recommend it and am telling all my friends to get it too! Even the non pregnant ones!

Announcing Eating Well When You're Expecting, providing moms-to-be with a realistic approach to navigating healthily and deliciously through the nine months of pregnancy-at home, in the office, over the holidays, in restaurants. Thorough chapters are devoted to nutrition, weight gain, food safety, the postpartum diet, and how to eat when trying to conceive again. And, very exciting, the book comes with 150 contemporary, tasty, and healthy recipes that feed mom and baby well, take little time to prepare, and are gentle on queasy tummies. A departure from its predecessor, What to Eat When You're Expecting, which has 976,000 copies in print, Eating Well loses the whole-wheatier-than-thou attitude, and comes with a light, reader-friendly tone while delivering the most up-to-date information. At the heart of the book are hundreds of pressing questions every mother-to-be has: Is it true I shouldn't eat any food cooked with alcohol? Will the caffeine in coffee cross into my baby's bloodstream? Help!-I'm entering my second trimester, and I'm losing weight, not gaining. Is all sushi off limits? How do I get enough calcium if I'm lactose intolerant? I keep dreaming about a hot fudge sundae-can I indulge? Guess what: the answer is yes.

I ran across this product at a local Whole Foods last year. When I went back to get more, they didn't carry it anymore. I've looked all over Dallas for this stuff and no one carries it. It is the only supplement/formula/protein powder that our 2 year old WILL eat and CAN eat. She is allergic to dairy, wheat, and eggs. She loves it and will drink it to the exclusion of everything else, including juice. It's worth every penny!! Thanks for carrying everything under the sun, Amazon!

These are awful! Do not waste your money. My 2 year old daughter is a semi-picky eater so when she wouldn't eat them I tried them. Ugh - I almost spit them out. The taste was almost sour/bitter, and the texture was not good either - think stale rice crispies. I threw them all away. Its a shame because she likes all of the other Revolution Foods that I've ordered, but I will be more careful with ordering in the future.

Plum Organics Mish Mash, Peach, 3.17-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 16) Review

Plum Organics Mish Mash, Peach, 3.17-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 16)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We love these baby food things in a little pouch. Sooooo much easier to feed to a baby or toddler on the go. Our son loves sucking the fruit out and we are pleased that it is both organic and healthy with nothing added - just fruit. For smaller ones, not good to let them handle it themselves, because they love to squeeze it, which gets things everywhere. But older ones can feed to themselves. I like the 3.17 size rather than the bigger one that Plum Organics has for some of the other flavors. It assures that he will eat all or most of it in one sitting rather than having to save some for later. You can also take this size on airplanes without having to have it tested for explosives - not the case with the bigger pouches. I also like that it is BPA free. If your little one likes them, ordering in bulk and with subscribe and save makes them much cheaper than at the store.

My child loved these bars for a while but then got burned out on them. They are a bit sweet and I didn't realize that until I tried to eat one to get rid of the last few. It was my mistake to buy so many before tasting them myself, so I hope other people try them out first. It did serve as a healthier snack for my child for several months so I am grateful for the product.
The expiration date is a great indication that they are all natural and do not have a bunch of preservatives in them, so I threw the leftovers in the compost.

Our baby really loves to eat these and they come in glass, Great! But we discontinued using them after I found a web posting that the manufacturer uses lids that contain BPA! I emailed their customer service department (10/2010) and the company confirmed that BPA is used in the lids. This smacks of the worst kind of marketing, taking advantage of the organic label and the potential health benefits but selling it in inferior packaging, legal yes, but not really in the spirit of the organic movement. For Pete's sake the lid itself has the word "organic" written on it 6 times! We stopped using all the companies products including the dry oatmeal and rice because we personally found it such a dishonest practice (he loved those too unfortunately) so in summary good food, bad implementation.

(Because we tried all three, I wanted to post these on each pouch page.)
YUM! Our 17 month old daughter loves them. When we heard about these new pouches, they were a _must try_. We couldnt decide on a fruit combination, so we ordered a case of each. This worked out well, because the order qualified for amazons free shipping. They arrived very quickly in easy to open cases.
We consolidated them to a box in the pantry so we could get to them faster and because those pouches can kind of slide around. :) Our daughter is all about choices right now and so we let her decide which one she'd like to try first. She looked carefully at each of them then said "NANA! ARN! BUH-NEE! HOP! HOP!" and so chose the Mango, Banana and Orange...and it remains her favorite of the three (although, she would never give up the others if offered).
Now, the plane ride...we recently took a trip to visit grandma from San Jose to Austin - a 4+ hour airflight that we were somewhat nervous about. We packed our fruit pouches and other goodies. It became a special treat as we rolled out to the tarmac and then took off into the sky. She happily ate and when she was done, sat quietly and contently looking at the pouch...pointing at the bunny and the orange and the banana, (we told/showed her there was a mango too).
When we ran out of pouches, we went to the whole foods - but they were not yet available there. They did have another brand, which we reluctantly purchased because unlike the peter rabbit pouches - the cap was so tiny, it could be a serious choking hazzard should it get into the hands (or mouth) of our little lady. The combination was also different and she didnt really care for the other kind as much.
Though she cant say alot of words, she does sign quite a few and she runs to the pantry, points and signs "more, please...more please!! please!!" Which is pretty funny to see.
We took some video the day they arrived, I'll have to see if I can find it and post as part of the review.
All the best!

Dynamic Health Labs Blueberry Concentrate Review

Dynamic Health Labs Blueberry Concentrate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This stuff is supposed to be no added sugar. Sometimes juice says that, but the concentrate is loaded with high fructose corn syrup or something, but I've bought the Cranberry too and there's no sugar in that. The only downside may be that they have to heat-seal this stuff so it has any shelf life past a few hours. Selling or packing on dry ice is about it. The heat is said to kill some of the anti-oxidant qualities and some of the nutrients. But, I still think is fairly harmless and a nice break from water...better than sodas. It tastes more like grape juice to me.
I know I'm like may others just looking for simple food and not all of that cheap genetically-altered crap being sold. The best long term solution would be to buy organic fruit locally and freeze your own juice. I bought some of this to test out and plan to keep some on the shelf for something different. It makes OK popsicles. Natural Health Shoppe is good, but there are some flavors I can't find. Nutricity is serious and safe shipping and overkills the packing. Both sellers were very good.

At about the age of one year, our pediatrician advised us to give the baby more water, preferably in the form of fruit juices. She said to mix the 100% juice with about half water to cut down on the sugar content. We've been mixing Hansen's juices, available in mega-packs of small boxes, with bottled water and serving the mixture in a sippy cup. Our boy likes his drinks very much. A few days ago, we ran out. In an emergency, my wife picked up a bottle of Gerber's Graduates Fruit Splashes.
The Splashes are just about the same as we have been doing. They are 40% juice and the rest is purified water. A few vitamins and minerals have been added. The Splashes come in a variety of flavors and the one we picked up is Strawberry Kiwi. The boy enjoys the Splashes, just as he enjoyed our previous mixtures. I see no major difference and we wouldn't hesitate to use the Gerber product. I suspect we'll go back to the Hansen's juices, however, inasmuch as it is easier to give the kid a greater variety. Plus, we have a ready supply of juices for our own use.

HAPPYBABY Happy Tot - Spinach, Mango and Pear, 4.22 Ounce Pouch (Pack of 16) Review

HAPPYBABY Happy Tot - Spinach, Mango and Pear, 4.22 Ounce Pouch (Pack of 16)
Average Reviews:

We love Happy Tots food. My 12 month old has tried many varieties and loves them all. He has not had one sour face yet! I'm surprised at the price here, you can get this item at Target for $1.09 per pouch which is much less expensive. I guess buying it online is helpful for people who don't have access to a Target or Health food store, and in that case, is worth the price.
*** as a special precaution ***
A baby food recall just issued by the FDA (Jan. 2010) may have some of the most stomach-churning details I've read in awhile:
"Swollen or leaking pouches may indicate problems with the product, including possible contamination by bacteria that can cause illness, or that the packaging has been compromised and is at risk of bacterial contamination."
The recalled food is made by Happy Baby, and it's a mix of the baby and toddler lines that parents should be throwing out. The recall covers:
* HAPPYTOT Green bean, pear & peas, NET WT. 4.22 OZ. (120g), UPC 8 52697 00127 9;
* HAPPYTOT Sweet potato, carrot, apple & cinnamon, NET WT. 4.22 OZ. (120g), UPC 8 52697 00128 6;
* HAPPYTOT Spinach, mango & pear, NET WT. 4.22 OZ. (120g), UPC 8 52697 00129 3;
* HAPPYTOT Butternut squash & apple, NET WT. 4.22 OZ. (120g), UPC 8 52697 00130 9;
* HAPPYTOT Banana, peach, coconut & prunes, NET WT. 4.22 OZ. (120g), UPC 8 52697 00131 6;
* HAPPYTOT Banana, peach & mango, NET WT. 4.22 OZ. (120g), UPC 8 52697 00132 3
* HAPPYBABY Mango, NET WT. 3.5 OZ. (99g), UPC 8 52697 00134 7
* HAPPYBABY Spinach Mango Pear, NET WT. 3.5 OZ. (99g), UPC 8 52697 00139 2
* HAPPYBABY Apricot Sweet Potato, NET WT. 3.5 OZ. (99g), UPC 8 52697 00136 1
The foods are sold in plastic pouches with plastic caps, and none are set to expire until late this year or even next year, so check through the stuff way back on your shelf. No illnesses have been reported so far, and Happy Baby's CEO Shazi Isram said in a company statement that this is a voluntary precautionary recall.
If your pouches are leaking or swollen, the FDA advises you keep them away not just from baby but from your pets as well and wash your hands if you've handled the packages.
Happy Baby directs parents to return them to the store for a full refund or contact them at 718-852-7606 or info@happybabyfood.com
