Melissa's Everyday Cooking with Organic Produce: A Guide to Easy-to-Make Dishes with Fresh Organic Fruits and Vegetables Review

Melissa's Everyday Cooking with Organic Produce: A Guide to Easy-to-Make Dishes with Fresh Organic Fruits and Vegetables

What a delight to open this book and learn more about organic fruits and vegetables. I saw this book listed on the NPR site as one of the top 10 summer cookbooks. Since following Cathy Thomas' articles in the Orange County Register I knew I would be in for a treat! She has a way of capturing her readers with a story -- and always interesting recipes.
Little did I know when I ordered it how much I would learn about each item listed. The produce is covered in an alphabetic format making it ever so easy to find information about a specific item. Then, each item starts with the same format: buying and storing, prep and use followed by item availability, serving suggestions and recipes that includes NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION.
Just browsing through I found some helpful hints, like how to store cilantro. I always find it discouraging when the cilantro spoils in a couple of days. Now I know how to store it so it will last 7 - 10 days. And did you know that using citrus zest from non-organic produce includes the wax. I never thought about that...now I do.
Another great feature is the listing in the front that includes seasonal availability of produce. Since I plan to give this as a gift for some non-California based family and friends I like that the produce listed is readily available nationwide.
Get this book for yourself, sit down with an organic seasonal fruit and enjoy the journey. You'll want to share the book -- and the treats you'll create from it.

Wild Jams and Jellies: Delicious Recipes Using 75 Wild Edibles Review

Wild Jams and Jellies: Delicious Recipes Using 75 Wild Edibles

Very little information is provided regarding the plants highlighted in the book; however, this book doesn't claim to be a foraging manual, it claims to be a cookbook, and it is -- a cookbook filled with the same three to six recipes over and over again, merely substituting different wild (or not so wild) fruit. Yes, it features 75 wild edibles, but considering that there's only about six recipes in it, it should only have been 81 pages long -- 75 to quickly gloss over the names and general conformation of the plants in question, and six for the recipes, with instruction to "insert X fruit here".

Well Preserved: A Jam Making Hymnal Review

Well Preserved: A Jam Making Hymnal

I first saw one of Ms. Hassol's recipes in the New York Times and made it immediately - it was the peach ginger marmalade. It was so successful, I immediately bought the book. Most of her combinations are quite inspired - although there are too many that rely on ginger - that I was inspired to try some of my own new concoctions. However, I agree with other reviewers that the 1.5 packets of pectin she recommends is too much. One is usually fine. Also, her sugar content is quite high. Comparing her recipes with others, they seem to be 1 and sometimes 2 cups too much. This results in the jam being so sweet that it hides the fruit flavors. I've cut back on both of these with great success.

Cranberry Cooking for All Seasons Review

Cranberry Cooking for All Seasons

I have read many cookbooks which include cranberry recipes, but none with such an extensive look into the magnificent fruit. Mrs. Cappelloni provides the reader with an enlightening view on the subject of cranberries. I would say it is certainly the best single subject cookbook I have ever encountered. I recommend it to all.

As pharmaceutical companies inundate us with reasons as to why their drugs are the way to solve all of our health concerns, we've been brainwashed into putting complete reliance on them. People forget the benefits of the basics like exercise, and above all...eating the right foods!! I've found Superfruits to be a great go-to guide for finding the best fruits for my health needs. I feel healthier and more educated about what I'm consuming--both wins in my book.
