Grow Younger, Live Longer: Ten Steps to Reverse Aging Review

Grow Younger, Live Longer: Ten Steps to Reverse Aging
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have regularly practiced Transcendental Meditation (TM) for a number of years, having originally become interested in it through one of Dr. Chopra's first books. I have found the practice to be a helpful one, and regularly recommend it to others. I have also experienced Ayurvedic health treatments and have read about the practice. As a result, I always look forward to reading Dr. Chopra's new books.
Grow Younger, Live Longer is an update on Ageless Body, Timeless Mind. The authors describe the Ayurvedic principles (practiced in India for many hundreds of years) of self-healing in a more detailed and understandable way than in any of Dr. Chopra's earlier books. Long-time practitioners of Transcendental Meditation will find little new in the book. Those who do not meditate now will find the book an easy, comfortable way to begin mind-body integration in ways that will probably help physiological and psychological health.
The authors argue that by forming ten new habits (by following the recommended practices for at least 10 weeks), you can "reset your Biostat (your biological or functional, age) up to fifteen years younger than your chronological age." Your Biostat is determined by various measures of your body's functioning, as compared to the average of people of the same sex and age. That point is not proven, however, in the text of the book. Many references care made in the notes. I am aware of studies done by practitioners of Transcendental Meditation that show such effects, which may be part of what the claim is based on. Some scientists have criticized the studies for potential bias because practitioners conducted almost all of the studies. The authors are not recommending TM, but rather other versions of meditation. Some nutritional and relationship studies have shown reversals of such biological markers.
You are encouraged to psychologically reframe aging to "an opportunity for greater wisdom, love, creativity, meaning, joy, and increased mental and physical capacity." "The real purpose of the book is to remind you, the reader, that this deeper reality, the domain of pure potentiality of spirit, is who you really are." "To know a person's body in the future, examine their experiences now." This sort of writing will remind you that Dr. Chopra likes to use Quantum physics as a metaphor for explaining the potential benefits of spiritual practices....
I also found much more scientific explanation here than in his earlier books about why these changes should be helpful. These were most detailed in the nutrition and exercise sections. The recommendations were explained in enough detail that I think that most people could understand and follow them. You will also find at least half of these food, water, and exercise recommendations in the better health books. The emphasis on spiritual and pscyhological practices is much stronger here. A good book on the importance of love from the scientific perspective is Dr. Dean Ornish's Love and Survival. The book also ends with a long section of vegetarian recipes from various cuisines (Thai, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, French, American, and Middle Eastern) for seven sample menus. These have fairly extensive lists of ingredients, and you may need to buy some provisions you don't have now. Tamari sauce is a good example of something that is not present in many American larders.
This book will probably be most appealing to a retired person who finds her- or himself feeling disconnected from a meaningful purpose. The practices here would be most helpful in that situation, and a retired person would have the time to take on the many new habits suggested here. Although middle-aged people with children at home would feel like they could never take the time to do these things, they would probably benefit even more from the stress reduction that these practices could bring.
I would also enourage you to learn about practicing TM. With that change, you would probably find it easier to make these other changes that Dr. Chopra suggests. Most cities have TM centers where you can locate a teacher. You can go to introductory sessions at no charge. The yoga in this book will make a nice complement to your meditation practice.
Take life's unexpected events less personally and with more curiosity!

Redesigning 50: The No-Plastic-Surgery Guide to 21st-Century Age Defiance

This book is terrific. It deserves at least 7 stars. ******* Its explains in detail issues as diverse as blood tests the average Doctor doesn't even perform such as C-Reactive Protein, homocysteine, and fibrinogen. It also explains hormone therapy both synthetic and bioidentical. It explains nutraceuticals, mesotherapy, the whole world of non invasive and minimally invasive facial and skin rejuvenation such as Thermage, Carboxytherapy In typical Oz style he actually interviews the leading Doctors in each of their respective fields and they are the ones who provide much of the diverse information in the book. You would have to buy at least a dozen books ( one from each of the expert authors) to get all of that information in one place. Oh yes and there was a chapter on food the first one. Its astonishing and a terrible disservice that someone could write a review after reading only one chapter, clearly ignorant of the wealth of information in this book, admit it and Amazon actually posts it. There is no way that anyone, even a Doctor or a scientist, could know all of the information in this book because contributions were made by over 50 leading Doctors and companies.

Stuff Every Man Should Know (Pocket Companions) Review

Stuff Every Man Should Know (Pocket Companions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is truly a great book. Great gift for a college grad, new son-in-law, wedding party member, or your spouse.
The range of subjects is amazingly broad. There is guaranteed to be something that you didn't know before in this book.
There is one mistake - on how to jump start a car. The tip calls for using standard jumper cables with four clamps - two Black and two Red.
Here is the sequence in the book: (starting from the step # where the clamps are attached...)
5. Red to Positive on fully charged battery
6. Red to Positive on discharged battery
7. Black to ground on metal on the dead car's engine (this step should be attaching Black to Negative on the discharged battery)
8. Black to Negative on the fully charged battery (this step should be ground to metal on the live car's engine)
Why? Because the final connection - the 4th one - will cause a spark. None of the first three connections will cause a spark because the circuit is incomplete. That spark can cause an explosion of the Hydrogen gas that MAY be leaking from either of the car batteries. The final connection should be far away from the battery (either one) as possible to avoid the potential explosion.
Buy the book anyway. It's superb.

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies: Quick Fixes, Clever Techniques, and Uncommon Cures to Get You Feeling Better Fast Review

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies: Quick Fixes, Clever Techniques, and Uncommon Cures to Get You Feeling Better Fast
Average Reviews:

I guess since its the DOCTORS version of HOME remedies they are going to send you to the drug store first for most everything. I was really hopeing for more at home remedies. Im all into natural cures that most docs dont even know about. No where did it reccomend the plant plantain for bug bite itch. It did have the bananna peel remedy for warts but it was in a small side box after it reccomended you get compound W from the store. Im not hapy with it at all. I was looking for HOME remedies. Most of the book is common sense, like for bug bites it tells you not to get bit in the first place. DUHHH. I guess I was looking more for homeopathy not what the doctor will tell you. You know the stuff you gr grandmother would have done. This book is going in the yardsale!
Namaste

New Menopausal Years : The Wise Woman Way, Alternative Approaches for Women 30-90 (Wise Woman Ways) Review

New Menopausal Years : The Wise Woman Way, Alternative Approaches for Women 30-90 (Wise Woman Ways)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Susan Weed gives a menopausal woman an entirely different view than that presented by the medical professionand the world at large. She gives the post menaupausal woman a reason to go forward with confidence into this new stage of life. The TRADITIONAL way of handling the physical and spiritual problems one encounters are explained easily and poetically. A big contrast to the sterile and totally unsympathetic view of doctors. They tend to look on this time as a chance to dehumanise the woman, whereas Susan shows how to become a better and more fulfilled being. As an amateur herbalist (I make my own tinctures that have successfully replaced the dreaded Premarin that I was put on after my hysterectomy) I found her information on herbs extremely useful I had found out, by trial and error, much that she explains on the use of herbs, but there is much that i did not know. A great book for those who do not want to be dehumanized by the medical profession and want to enjoy their many final years with health and vigour!

I bought this book when it was entitled "10,000 Things to be Happy About". Just picked it off a shelf in the bookstore one day when my mom was trying to survive her experimental chemo treatments and the rest of us were struggling to cope with her impending loss. That day, this book was like a shaft of sunlight splintering a murky room. It made me remember that there are good things in life no matter what crushing sadness we were experiencing. I'd just pick up the book, open it to any page, and I'd just start reading that wonderful list of happy things. It was like a lifeline to me at times. I've since purchased it as a gift for another person going through the same experience and will be purchasing it again soon to give as a gift once more to someone experiencing their own kind of pain. Sometimes we just need to be reminded that life is still good. To the author, a simple heartfelt thank you from me.
