Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies Review

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies

I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone considering weight loss surgery. It will become a valuable tool in helping you make your decision. Should you decide to have WLS, it will guide you through the numerous tests and insurance hurdles, the hospital stay, potential complications, post-op diet, and post-op emotions.
I read this book three times on my journey towards WLS. I'm now a couple of weeks post-op and continue consulting it several times a week.
One of the authors is the surgeon that Al Roker selected for his weight-loss surgery (before she had written this book). Roker wrote a short intro to the book that explains how he extensively researched WLS and interviewed eight surgeons before selecting Dr. Kurian. Roker has the money to go to any surgeon in the world, and the fact that he chose Dr. Kurian among the eight that he interviewed emphasizes Kurian's expertise in the field.
What impressed me most about this book was that the authors provided reliable and exhaustive information but didn't try to "sell" the readers on having this surgery.
Unlike most other WLS books, this one covers not only the standard Roux-en-Y and its variations but also other procedures increasingly being considered by patients, such as Lap-Band and bibliopancreatic diversion. Less common procedures are also described. After a description of each procedure, the authors provide a list of pros and cons to that procedure.
Every step of the journey towards WLS is explained in detail here, including the numerous tests the surgeon will require, getting insurance approval, the hospital stay, the post-op diet, potential complications, and psychological factors. It is truly exhaustive.

Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks) Review

Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks)

Post-surgical patients (both gastric bypass and band) are supposed to eat at least 60g of protein every day. So why are many of these recipes so skimpy on the protein? I expected more useable fare from a book that touts itself as "nourishing the new you". As it stands, I will only use maybe a quarter of the recipes in this book -- very disappointing. The High-Protein Cookbook is a much better selection, in my opinion.

Learn how to eat right after weight loss surgery. In the past decade or so, there have been explosive increases in both the incidence of severe obesity and weight loss; bariatric-surgery. It has been shown that the incidence of bariatric surgical procedures has increased over 600% in the last decade. It is estimated that approximately 200,000 Americans - and another 200,000 adults world wide - will undergo a bariatric operation in 2006. This dramatic increase in operative cases is in part a testament to the safety and efficacy of the currently performed surgical procedures including the roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and the biliopancreatic diversion - with or without duodenal switch.Weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet, but with life-long positive lifestyle habits, including a healthy diet, you may be able to enjoy vibrant health you have never felt before. Once the surgery is over, there is a lifelong maintenance program to ensure not only that you keep the weight off, but that your body gets the right balance of nutrients. When you can only eat as much food as you can hold in your hand at a sitting, it is vital that you are eating the right foods and taking the correct supplements to nourish your body for life. What sets Recipes After Weight Loss-Surgery apart from previous cookbooks is the combined expertise of Margaret Furtado, MS, RD, LD-N and Lynette Schultz, a combination of almost 40 years' experience in clinical nutrition and the culinary arts, respectively. Together, they will help you navigate your way through the sometimes turbulent waters after your weight loss surgery, and will provide you with general clinical guidelines after your procedure, as well as helpful hints for easing your transition from surgery to your new, healthy lifestyle. With sections on home entertaining and eating-on-the-run, Ms. Furtado and Ms. Schultz will help you to feel like a person, rather than a patient, after your life-altering weight loss surgery.

I have never been a "protein shake" guy considering my lack of affinity for milk AND chocolate. I just hate that full and bloated feeling that many of the MRPs and whey-protein-blend based protein shakes give. For one who has tried quite a few brands of whey concentrates and isolates (ON, Optimum, EAS etc.), this is quite a pleasant change. The label reads "Bottled Detonation" and for a post workout drink, thats exactly what it is! I have always been a fan of Isopure Zero Carb anyways!
For starters, it just doesn't feel like you are having a protein drink. It feels more like u r having a fruit punch. It just slides down ur throat and for the past couple of days, I have been having it with breakfast just like u have orange (or any other) juice. I have tried alpine punch and apple melon flavors till now and both are really good. There are plenty of those milk-based protein shakes around but these are rare. These must be made for me!

This stuff is so hard to find~!! I first started buying it in 2004 through my surgeon's office after having gastric bypass surgery. It was great for my protein needs.. Just wish I could find it in the liquid form again.. (Then I wouldn't have to spend 5 mintues breaking up all the globs of powder). But, it's worth it, all the flavors taste good. Kills two birds with one stone, getting my water and protein in.

Nature's Best Isopure Ready-to-Drink, Punch (Zero Carb), 12 Count Review

Nature's Best Isopure Ready-to-Drink, Punch (Zero Carb), 12 Count

Both the isopure and isopure plus are the best protein drinks on the market with low carb in mind. They taste very good. I have tried the ideal protein diet, adkins, etc. and many protein supplements that are or claim to be low carb they usually taste horrible and have a foamy texture or a bad aftertaste. These are not like that at all. They actually have more of a fruit punch taste or whatever flavor you choose. I will continue to use this product as it is the only one I can truly say I can tolerate plus they make a great pre/post workout snack.
