Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin Review

Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin

I am the editor of Diabetic Mommy Online Magazine. I have lots of diabetes books in my personal library and there are a select few that I am always recommending to members on my site. This one is now at the top of my list of essential diabetes books for insulin users, both syringe and pump users.
I found this book at my local library. I thought it had a catchy title and took it home. Cute title aside, this book took me by total surprise. It is now on my wish-list because it will make a tremendous difference in my self-management plus I want to mark this baby up with notes.
If you have diabetes, you might be like me...you read in books and hear organizations stressing self-management however your own healthcare team won't give you enough information to make corrections on your own so you are still dependent on them for every single little adjustment. Busy schedules for all parties mean that a simple correction can be a hassle and a long wait.
This book is not intended to be a replacement for your healtcare team, don't get me wrong, but it provides you with enough information so that you will not be totally helpless and you will have more knowledge to work WITH your team rather than just be the recipient of instructions.
This book covers many topics: Why diabetics need to be in control of their glucose levels, history of diabetes, insulin basics, tips, various methods of insulin dosing, having diabetes in the "real" world, hypo/hyperglycemia, resources, forms, and easy formulas for personalizing your insulin doses and timing, etc. It is the most detailed and clear book on the subject I have seen yet.
Something else this book has going for it is great clear writing and the unavoidable good-humor of the author. He really made me chuckle. If you are a pop-culture fan like me...and you recognize the phrase, "Hi, I'm Larry, this is my brother Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl," Then you'll feel right at home with this book!
I also found very interesting facts that I didn't know before - such as mind work lowers your glucose levels and that caffeine effects your glucose levels.
The only slight problem I had was that the author seems to be a man who really loves sports - while I am a woman who really does not! Many of his analogies use sporting examples which most of the time leave me pretty clueless. In addition, he definitely communicates "man-style." He uses very visual-type examples and explanations.
For example, I feel if the author were to give my husband and I driving directions, my husband would understand right away and take off. (He wouldn't necesarrily find the place - haha) I, on the other hand, would have to review the info, ask for landmarks, and make some notes. (I would find it for sure!)
While the book gives detailed and complete information, I would have found a little summarizing in the form of a cheat sheet would have been fantastic. Worksheets to enter your information and make up your personal plan would be great too. He does have helpful log sheets in the book.
As a result of reading this book, I feel more empowered regarding my ability to troubleshoot and correct. And it will open up a dialogue with my healthcare team and possibly start a battle with my insurance company. I found in my own personal case (and everyone is different), I would probably do best with a pump. In lieu of that, long-acting, short-acting AND an occasional intermediate acting insulin via syringes would be good too. I would feel confident enough to make the suggestions to my team, but I don't know how realistic it would be for them to provide me with all three different types of insulin. I woudn't hold my breath for a pump either!
In spite of this, I still give the book 5 stars because I feel it is so valuable and there is more than enough information for me to make my own info sheets and make suggestions for my care.

There are dozens of books about managing diabetes, but none focuses specifically on using insulin. A comprehensive, supremely practical guide free of medical mumbo jumbo, Think Like a Pancreas discusses day-to-day blood glucose control and monitoring; measuring and matching insulin to carbohydrate intake; the pluses and minuses of different insulin-delivery methods; hypoglycemia; exercise; the impact of emotions, stress, and illness; and the dozens of other issues that everyone taking insulin needs to master. A book that is long overdue, this first-ever, indispensable, all-in-one resource will enlighten and inspire the four million people whose lives and well-being depend on daily insulin intake.

Death to Diabetes: The Six Stages of Type 2 Diabetes Control & Reversal (Version 1.0) Review

Death to Diabetes: The Six Stages of Type 2 Diabetes Control and Reversal (Version 1.0)

It is interesting that two of the most helpful books on diabetes that I have found - this one and "Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars" by Dr. Bernstein - were both written by diabetics and fellow engineers rather than by doctors. However, Dr. Bernstein is an engineer who went to medical school and became a doctor. Often it seems that those non-patients from the medical profession are stubbornly wed to what they have been taught is the truth about this disease regardless of outcome. Sometimes I wonder if it is the result of traditional medical training, based more on memorization than systematic problem solving, that causes this frustrating result.
In this book, the author goes over how he went from someone who went into a diabetic coma with a blood glucose of 1337 (80-120 is normal) who had been subsisting on processed food to someone who has slimmed down, learned to eat right, and now has a blood sugar in the 80-110 range. He talks about how the foods diabetics are not discouraged to eat by the medical profession such as potatoes, bananas, cereal, and many dairy products cause the blood sugar to spike and worsen glucose control. Instead, he recommends that you snack on veggies such as brussel sprouts. He even talks about his "power breakfast" - brussel sprouts with olive oil, salmon, and water. He determined what worked for him the same as Dr. Bernstein - by meticulous record keeping of his blood glucose after ingesting various foods.
The author also talks about other issues that will be more familiar such as exercise and record keeping. Also, he incorporates a spiritual component into his healing process that includes prayer and inspirational quotes. Finally, he talks about various nutritional supplements such as cinnamon, gymnema sylvestre, and bitter melon, and how each might be helpful in blood glucose control.
The reason I am only giving this book four stars is that, although everyone will be helped by reading this book and following its advice, not everyone will be, for all intents and purposes, "cured" of their diabetic condition. For one thing, the author is a man, and diabetes in women often faces the additional complications of insulin reacting with the female hormones to make the condition more difficult to treat. Then there are those of us with polyglandular failure where more than one of the endocrine systems fails - for example, hypothyroidism combined with diabetes greatly complicates the treatment of both conditions. Also, there are drug-induced cases of diabetes such as those caused by thiazide diuretics, necessary to limit blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals. However, if yours is a case where there is not a strong genetic component or complicating factors, and your lifestyle is the greatly dominating cause of the disease, you might be able to mimic the author's truly tremendous outcome.

The Low GI Guide to Living Well with PCOS (New Glucose Revolution) Review

The Low GI Guide to Living Well with PCOS (New Glucose Revolution)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think this book is a must-read for any woman with PCOS. I've had PCOS and severe insulin resistance for seventeen years and I felt hopeless about being able to manage it, but this book shows you that small, gradual changes can make a difference. The authors have taught me that losing weight doesn't have to be the main focus, increasing insulin sensitivity is the focus and then everything else follows. They also say that if you exercise but still don't lose weight you are still increasing your insulin sensitivity and therefore reducing symptoms, which I think is a great motivator. The only thing I feel this book misses out is the importance of organic food for health, but apart from that I feel it imparts a sense of optimism and empowerment for PCOS sufferers. I thank the authors from the bottom of my heart.

Stop Prediabetes Now: The Ultimate Plan to Lose Weight and Prevent Diabetes Review

Stop Prediabetes Now: The Ultimate Plan to Lose Weight and Prevent Diabetes

I have read most of Jack Challem's books, and this latest on how to avoid diabetes is by far his best effort. It should really be treated as a manual, as the book provides lessons on getting and maintaining normal blood sugar and avoiding diabetes. However, the ease of reading and understanding the profound, yet simple to follow guidelines, reads more like a great book. My family has an extensive history of diabetics, and three of my siblings have it. My mother passed away in my arms, before she would have needed to leave this earth, due to diabetes..She had several surgeries on her feet, removing toes, and part of her feet, and she was blind at the end. I do not want to have to die this way...Thanks to the information in this awesome book, I have already lowered my fasting blood sugars from 94, to a normal range of 81 within a couple of weeks. I monitor my blood sugar follow simple eating and exercise habits outlined in easy to follow guidelines and have never felt better.

The Complete Idiot's Guide Glycemic Index Cookbook Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide Glycemic Index Cookbook

I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance, so I jumped right on the Low Glycemic train. I love the Complete Idiot's Guide to 20-minute meals, so I thought this would be the best place to start. The first part of the book has lots of helpful information, and each recipe shows all the nutritional content. The downside is that a lot of the recipes include expensive ingredients or ingredients that I can't find anywhere, such as Hi-Maize and Xylitol and Soy Flour. My only resort would be ordering online. With the 20 min meals book, I could almost always flip it open and find something to make with what I already had in the house.
The fruit recipes are plentiful, but as someone who loves fruit, I can eat tons of it and don't need the bother of cooking it. But for those who find it hard to get in their daily servings, they would probably be great. I also found that many of the recipes involve a lot of meat and though there is a small vegetarian section, those recipes don't look stellar. I would say, if you're a vegetarian, a picky eater or on a budget, maybe just try looking up recipes online.

With middle age approaching, and after several unsuccessful dieting attempts, I didn't think I would ever lose all the extra weight I had been carrying around. I went to Dr. Hart's Wellness Workshop last year truly in despair. Dr. Hart and Mary Kay were genuinely interested in getting to the bottom of my problem. Using their simple-to-follow eating plan, I have lost 50 pounds in the past year, lowered my cholesterol, and I feel great. I haven't been "on a diet", but have learned to change the way I organize my meals and think about foods. I even went on vacation, ate and drank what I wanted, and still came home a pound lighter! Use this book to lose weight, but teach its principles to your family too, so they can avoid developing insulin-resistance and the diseases related to it.
