This is a WONDERFUL cookbook. It is loaded with healthy recipes that really taste good. Each page is beautifully illustrated with a color photograph of the dish being featured. My husband and I both love fish and I was very pleased to learn how many fish and seafood dishes are contained in this book. In fact, when I prepare fish (at least once or twice a week) it is THIS cookbook to which I first turn. Try the SEARED TILAPIA WITH LEMON-TARRAGON SAUCE or the BROILED HALIBUT WITH BALSAMIC GLAZE. Then for shellfish try the SHRIMP AND PEANUT STIR FRY or the SHRIMP PAELLA. Mmmm good! There are some lovely chicken recipes I have yet to try but their descriptions really sound interesting. There are also delectable recipes for veal, flank steak, pepper steak and pork tenderloin as well as some exotic soups and mouth watering salads and even desserts. I could go on and on but what I recommend is to try it for yourself. You will treasure for years to come! Especially IF YOU LIKE TO COOK! (and cook healthy of course...)

American Dietetic Association Guide to Eating Right When You Have Diabetes Review

American Dietetic Association Guide to Eating Right When You Have Diabetes

This book stands out from others because goes beyond just telling you WHAT to do to manage your diabetes, it also tells you the WHY. By helping you understand the reasoning behind dietary and exercise guidelines, the author gives you the knowledge you need to make intelligent decisions when presented with situations not covered by guidelines alone. She seems to understand that everything isn't always black and white in life, and you have to make choices based on many factors.
I'm newly diagnosed. Since I'm not on any medications (and hope to keep it that way for as long as possible), the two tools I have to manage my diabetes are exercise and diet. This book addresses the diet aspect very well, while touching on the importance of exercise. It's not a scientific text, so it doesn't go into excruciating detail. It's an easy read. She helps you understand how the body works without diabetes, and then explains what happens differently when you have diabetes. You'll come to understand how different foods affect your blood glucose level - and WHY. Which allows you to understand and develop your own meal plan if you don't have access to a nutritionist. If you do, you'll better understand why your nutritionist makes the recommendations she does, and you will have the knowledge to discuss various options with her.
This may not be the first thing you want to read if you've just discovered you need to live in a way that manages your blood glucose levels. There are higher level overview books; educational websites run by the Joslin Center or American Diabetes Association; or better yet, diabetes management programs taught by diabetes educators and nutritionists at most local hospital that will give you a solid foundation. Ask your doctor about local programs if he hasn't recommended it to you already.
With that knowledge under your belt, this is an excellent book to take you down to the next level of detail.

Food & Mood: The Complete Guide to Eating Well and Feeling Your Best, Second Edition Review

Food and Mood: The Complete Guide to Eating Well and Feeling Your Best, Second Edition

There are lots of reasons why you might not be in a good mood. If you thought it was because of a bad relationship, you'd probably check out a relationship book. And, if you thought it was because you needed more exercise, you'd check out a book on exercise (BTW rec. Exercise Beats Depression for that). Having said that, this is a great book to check out if you think your nutrition might play a role in your moods AND you want to learn what it is you can do about it. So what does the book cover? Well, the book is about and inch and a quarter thick and among other things, discusses...
-how food can affect your mood
-a self-assessment of your diet
-a section on sweets and cravings
-diet and energy levels
-diet and PMS, SAD
-stress and your diet
-smart foods
-foods and your sleep
-eating disorders
-the "Feeling Good diet"
-supplements
As you can see, the book is quite comprehensive, and there's really not a nutritional stone that's been left unturned. I don't know that anyone needs to read every page of this book cover-to-cover, as not everyone will need to know about all its info (such as PMS). Instead, look at this book as a tremendous resource to refer to, and a big step in covering all your "nutritional bases" when it comes to food and feeling good.
