(More customer reviews)I really didn't start out to buy another battery charger. I have one from the local electronics store, but I've not been thoroughly satisfied with it. For one thing, it has a little red button that, when pushed, supposedly discharges the batteries so that the new charge can be maximized and battery "memory" will not develop. However, the instructions fail to say how long the button should be depressed, nor is there any indication on the charger that the discharge is complete--or even happening. Likewise, the charger gives no indication when the batteries have been fully recharged and are ready for removal. That just leaves too much to chance for my peace of mind. Also, I have to remember to tell the charger what kind of batteries it's dealing with, NiMH or NiCd.
The Juice Multi-Battery Charger, however, is smart. It knows automatically what type of batteries are being recharged, it doesn't ask me to press little red buttons to discharge them first, and it shows me (with a different LED for each battery) when the recharge is complete. It willingly accepts rechargeable AA and AAA batteries, up to four of either type simultaneously.
Beyond its performance, this recharger even looks neat! Its clear, blue plastic battery cover on a silver base and its four green LEDs, which flash while recharging is in progress and burn steadily when it's complete, make it too attractive to hide away in a cabinet. Its appearance is as superb as its performance. The sole drawback is that 9-Volt, "transistor-type" batteries are not accommodated, only AA and AAA. For that lack only do I give the device four Amazon stars instead of five. For the sizes of batteries that it does accept, I doubt that a better charger is available anywhere.

Juice Battery Family Charger - AA, AAA, C & D Review

(More customer reviews)Just received two of these. Yes, how dumb of me to buy two not knowing much about it. The quality of the casing is really poor. The plastic is very flimsy feeling. The labels were all half-way peeled off upon opening the box. They show signs of just simply being really old.
The instructions are written in many languages which is fine, but there are things they fail to tell you. I also ordered the Juice AA 4 pack and 2 of the batteries arrived dead. The charger blinks red with those batteries, but the instructions do not even bother telling you what a blinking red light means.
If you go to the juicebattery website, they do not mention this product anywhere. Not even when you search for it. A good chance this is a fly-by discontinued product. The company themselves have not responded to by blinking light question for 3 days now.
As with many things, made in CHINA!
I got a few more days yet before I need to return them via Amazon's return policy which as we all know, ROCKS!

Juice Rechargeable Alkaline Batteries, Size AA, 4-Count Package Review

(More customer reviews)First of all, those Juice Rechargeable Alkaline Batteries cannot be recharged using ordinary NiMH chargers - not even the Juice Battery Family Charger. You need either a special-purpose alkaline charger, or a multi-chemistry charger that can handle both NiMH and Rechargeable Alkaline Manganese (RAM) cells. For examples:
- Juice Multi-Battery Charger Kit, and
- Rayovac PS3 Universal Battery Charger (now discontinued)

On first glance, the concept of rechargeable alkaline cell sounds great, since it combines advantages from both ordinary alkaline cell (long shelf life, 1.5V terminal voltage) and rechargeable cell (multi-use). Unfortunately, it also inherited the biggest limitation of alkaline cell: high internal resistance. This makes it very inefficient when used in high-drain appliances such as digital camera or flash light. So it is only suitable for low-drain appliances such as wireless mouse, remote control, or smoke detector.
CAPACITY:
The manufacturer claims that a new Juice AA RAM cell has capacity of 2000mAh (tested with discharge current of 50mA down to 0.8V at 22 degree C). My own measurement using the La Crosse BC-900 has shown an average capacity of only 1440mAh (tested with 100mA down to 0.9V at 17 degree C). In comparison, the Duracell alkaline AA cell under identical test conditions provided 2220mAh, or 50% higher capacity! Worse yet, capacity of Juice RAM cell drops further with each deep-discharge cycle. After five more charge/discharge cycles, its remaining capacity is only around 1000mAh.
LIFESPAN:
Product description claims Juice RAM cells can 'recharge and reuse up to 100 times'. But this is very misleading, because it can only be achieved if you shallow-discharge (discharge no more than 25% of capacity) the cell every time. That means you have to remove the cell and recharge it very frequently, before the low-battery indicator ever comes up. In comparison, a typical NiMH cell is rated for 500 deep-discharge cycles.
RELIABILITY:
I have eight of those Juice RAM cells stored in a box after testing. After about one year of storage, three of them leaked electrolyte badly through the negative terminals. Good thing they were not being used in appliances. In contrast, none of my name brand low-self-discharge rechargeable cells have failed on me.CONCLUSION:
In my opinion, it is just not worth the trouble to 'baby-sit' those rechargeable alkaline cells, especially since you can easily buy low-self-discharge NiMH cells (such as SANYO eneloop AA or Sony Pre-Charged AA) instead.
