Family Dinners Review

Family Dinners
Average Reviews:

I have not just liked, but loved every recipe I've tried from this cookbook. It has become my most frequently used cookbook for everyday meals. I have tons of recipes for really complicated holiday and party food but not that many for tasty meals that don't call for tons of ingredients. This book utilizes stuff most of us stock regularly. You might have to buy 1 or 2 extra items but you probably won't have to dedicate a day to acquiring what's needed like it is with some recipes. When a friend has a crisis or someone has a baby I make their meal from this book. They invariably ask me for the recipe. I bought this cookbook on impulse while on vacation and am so glad I didn't pass it up.

The benefits of a home-cooked meal shared by family at the dinner table can scarce be overestimated in today's busy world. Author Janet Peterson takes aim at our scattered modern lives by encouraging us to come back to the heart of our homes-the kitchen. With 280 recipes for traditional, comforting, and fast family meals, there will be no excuses left for not bringing everyone together around a hearty plate of food.

Research has shown that time together as a family is vital to the overall well-being of children, especially when it comes to developing healthy eating habits, building communication skills and self-esteem, and forming relationships. Get committed to making family time a priority!

Family Dinners features 280 recipes, plus valuable tips for saving time during meal prep, money at the grocery store, and your own effort by getting your family in on the cooking and cleaning. Make dinnertime the highlight of the day for everyone involved.

Family Dining Tips

Make sure dinnertime belongs only to you. Let the answering machine respond to phone calls, turn off the television, and put away the newspaper.
I
f your children are grown or older, turn dinnertime into a forum for discussion of current issues and happenings in the area and around the world.

As a family, volunteer at a local soup kitchen or food bank. This will help family members to appreciate dinner at home even more.

Hold a "crazy hat dinner." Invite each family member to wear their favorite or funniest hat to the table.

Discuss books during mealtime. Ask family members to share their current and longtime favorites.

Time-Saving Tips
I
nstead of cooking meatballs in a skillet on top of the stove, place them on a greased broiler pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.

If a piece of eggshell falls into your mixture, dip a larger piece of shell into the bowl. It adheres instantly.
Undiluted cream soups or cheese soup make easy sauces for vegetables or pasta.

Type your basic shopping list on the computer. Keep a copy in the kitchen to add to during the week. Add
specialty items for particular recipes.

Use instant potatoes to thicken soups and stews.

The Book of Slow Cooking Review

The Book of Slow Cooking

I have found and been told by other readers that the food resulting from the recipes in this book is far, far superior in taste, (especially), quality and healthfulness to the food resulting from the "cookbook" that comes with a new slow cooker, at least the brands I've heard about. The recipes also appear to be never-fail and full of good advice. GO! I only wish it came in a less destructible hard cover.

Easy Desserts Review

Easy Desserts
Average Reviews:

I'm always looking for quick and easy recipes to make with my granddaughter, Isabella for her web site, Isabella Cooks, and also some that are especially good to use for my quick cooking site at BellaOnline. At first glance, this book seemed to have what I wanted.
As I read through the book, I was amazed at the number of easy and clever shortcuts that are included in the recipes. I kept saying to myself, "Why didn't I think of that!"
This book contains around 400 of the easiest and fastest recipes that I have ever seen. Some of them are community cookbook recipes that have made the rounds, but others are fun recipes that make extra good use of convenience foods such as flour tortillas, prepared pie filling, refrigerator cinnamon rolls, prepared pie crusts, cake mixes, sweetened condensed milk, instant pudding, store bought cookies, and of course, frozen whipped topping. Most of the recipes have five or fewer ingredients, and are easy enough for kids to make. In addition to recipes using convenience items, there are several easy recipes made from scratch, some even using real butter and whipping cream, and many using good fresh summer fruit. There are gelatos, sherbets, and ice creams to be made in your timesaving automatic ice cream maker; and even some very fancy gourmet desserts such as Crepes Suzette (made with the prepared crepes found in the produce department of the grocery store) and Cherries Jubilee.
Isabella chose a recipe to make at home called Caramel Treats where you pour a mixture of butter, sugar, and pecans over graham crackers, bake them, and you have caramel cookies. Bella, who is 10, was able to follow and understand the recipe exactly with no adult help. I have seen these cookies at pot lucks and neighborhood dinners where adults have made them, and while they aren't my favorite (since they come out sugary), Bella's were exactly right---just like the adults made. The recipes in this book are not only kid friendly, they use ingredients that many of us already have on our cupboard shelves. The book has a complete index, the layout is excellent, and there is a good variety of desserts, including cakes, pies, puddings, candies, cookies, and desserts such as cobblers. No recipe in the book takes more that 15-20 minutes of hands on time. Actually, the only drawback I can see is that there are no colored pictures; however, there are cute illustrations.
While I wouldn't consider this a must-have cookbook for everyone, (it doesn't have the perfect recipe for your next fancy dinner party, and probably isn't a good pick for a gourmet cook) it is perfect for families with kids who like to help in the kitchen or for all of us who are busy and need very fast dessert recipes. In fact, if you are one who hates to cook, but occasionally are forced to make a good dessert, this just may become your dessert bible!

I bought this book along with The Complete Book of Food Counts by Corinne T. Netzer. This book (The Calorie Counter) only lists Calories (yes I know that's what the title says!) - I thought that they would list carbs, protein, etc. in addition to calories.

Plateful of Passion: The Guide to Creating Sensual Enhancement through your diet and how everyday foods can boost libido, and greatly improve your sex life (Volume 1)
Average Reviews:

This Book is not exactly what I thought it was going to be. I kind of thought it would have more recipes. It defines which foods have a "boost" alphabetically. It begins of course with A, then B, C, and so on. A little history is given on the named food along with present day knowledge from research. There are about one to three recipes following. It is more a book about the facts on the foods than a recipe book. Overall though, a good read. I did find the information very in-depth and extremely helpful. So not what I was expecting, but still good!

The meatloaf sandwich is very good. I added a little more garlic and some ketchup and mustard to the recipe. The Sweet Rose Cake is fantastic if I must say so myself ( :-D It is my recipe!!!). However 3/4 cup of the jam wil not be enough for the cake if you make it 4 layers as shown in the picture.

I happen to be a firm believer that any Jr. League cookbook is going to be great. This one is even better than that as it is a compilation of several of Austin's Jr. League cookbooks. Kind of the best of the best, I would say. There are recipes for every taste. I would highly recommend this book for any Texas kitchen. It would make a great gift for our friends who aren't fortunate enough to live here as well.
