I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes which I did not have during my first pregnancy. I had no idea how much this condition can affect my unborn baby and my own body until this diagnoses came up. Because it can be pretty dangerous for both of us my OB sent me to a dietitian to begin working on bringing my blood glucose levels down to safer numbers. For some women this may mean diet and exercise changes, while others may require medication. At this point I am working on managing the condition through changes in my diet and adding an extra walk to the two I already take daily. This might sound easy enough but it really is not.
Adding in the extra walk has been helping a bit but watching my carb intake at meals and times of the day has been more of a challenge. Not everything is very well labeled and serving sizes can get confusing. My dietitian recommended that I purchase this guide because of its information AND size. It is a little big for a pants pocket and my purse is too small for it but not by much. It can easily fit in a backpack or briefcase and not crowd your important work or school related materials. It will also fit in most glvoe boxes for quick access at the drive-thru.
If you spend a lot of time away from home traveling or in your car this guide is great to have on hand. Let me give an example... I had to go out of town yesterday and the group I was with wanted to stop at a specific restaurant to eat before a meeting. While the menu did have a small section of 'lighter fare' meals that were marked with calorie, carbohydrate, sugars and other information items such as condiments and drinks were not labeled. I was able to find a suitable meal through the menu and this book helped me factor in whether I could have syrup or ketchup as well. While that experience made it very useful outside my home, within my home I like it to help figure out which fresh fruit and in what portions won't put me over my limit. Same goes for nuts, dried fruits, vegetables and other items which are usually bought without labels.
Many brand name pre-packaged foods are included in this guide from cereals and salad dressings to pasta sauces and frozen dinners. A restaurant section includes the basic fast food chains and many finer sit-down establishments. But there's more to it all than just calorie, fat and carb counts. A few small sections discuss everything from protein and iron counts to alcohol consumption and diabetes itself! I don't think it's intended to be a diet plan in any way shape or form but provides informational tidbits about better eating and safer food habits that anyone can use whether they are a pregnant woman with GD like I am or just someone looking to make better choices when going out to eat.
I will say that even though I don't need glasses and I have decent sight I wish I had looked at the large print version as the print in this one is very small to keep it pocket-sized. Other than that I am really pleased with the guide and hope that it will continue to help me through these final weeks of pregnancy with the GD and even beyond as I try to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

Last year I was diagnosed as a diabetic. While not an extreme case I still needed to start watching my carbs and weight. The problem is while watching your carbs and fat is easy at home, it's extremely difficult to do so while traveling. My wife and I went on a long trip last summer driving across a good chunk of the US. We were afraid my new diatary needs might spoil the trip a bit. I mean who wants to spend the whole time on vacation worrying about what you're going to eat all the time? This book allowed me to be able to stay within my carb and fat limits even when eating at places like McDonalds, Burger King or your average roadside diner.
The book has a ton of practical applications for someone trying to watch their calories, fat or carbs.
One last thing. Do not let the word "pocket" make you shy away from this book. Yeah, it can fit in your pocket but I looked through a number of full sized nutritional guides before finding this one and none of the $30 books has as much information and especially practical information as this book.
By the way. I lost 30 pounds and I'm in the best shape of my life!
